“But all the magic I have known I've had to make myself.” ― Shel Silverstein, Where the Sidewalk Ends
It’s finally October, every melancholic girl's favorite time of the year. After a breakup and a much-needed Hot Girl Summer, what Sofie needed was a Sad Girl Autumn, and she’s been taking advantage of the season.
She started doing yoga and has been reading a lot more; you can confirm that by checking her Insta feed – she’s been filling it with intellectual aesthetic pics.
Strolls through the park, loud sighs, pumpkin spice drinks—anything that makes her look like the protagonist of a pretentious European indie film.
Tonight, though, is a special night. Tonight Sofie is a sexy Barbie Cowgirl, and she’s accompanied by Black Swan, Sleeping Beauty, and Carrie. Or, Chiara, Luisa and Becca, as they are known the rest of the year.
It’s Luisa’s annual Halloween party. It’s been a hit since the first edition and the first time Sofie will be attending it as a single lady.
If the last few months have taught her anything, it is how to be casual, or at least how to appear casual. Sofie was focused on having fun, holding her phone in one hand and a gin tonic drink in another. She scrolled through social media while taking another sip. She wasn't trying to arrive already drunk at the party, only to loosen up a bit.
She and her friends have already posted their outfits; half of them were already at the party. Sofie took a deep breath, put away her phone and walked out of the door.

When Sofie walks into the party, she gasps with excitement. The decor was straight out of a Halloween movie. A fog machine was filling the room with mist, cobwebs were hanging all over the place. Jack-o'-lanterns grinned from every nook and cranny, their flickering faces casting playful shadows, giving the whole scene a spooky, dimly lit charm.
It was clear Luisa had gone all in to make this party amazing.
And the guests really brought their A-game in the costume department. Among the crowd, there was a wickedly realistic zombie, a time-traveling Doctor Who, a whimsical unicorn with a shimmering horn and even a comically oversized banana. The variety was as entertaining as it was impressive.
Music was thumping from the speakers, mixing old-school Halloween hits with some current jams, setting the mood for the night.
Sofie's eyes locked onto a familiar face in the sea of costumes – it was Pedri, dressed like a pirate and laughing at something Rebecca said. He looked a bit different since she last saw him, sporting a cool beard that suited him perfectly.
Sofie wasn’t surprised to see the two chatting; Becca and Pedri have been in a complicated long-distance situationship since they met in Ibiza, in the summer. But seeing the football player at the party gave Sofie goosebumps, as she tried to forget her own antics in the Spanish island.
She goes on to greet the couple.
“Cool beard, you really committed to the theme, didn't you?” Sofie jokes about his costume and Pedri laughs. “What are you doing in town, anyway?”
They were in Lisbon, far away from Barcelona, where he should be. Sofie half asks because she worries about her friend ending up heartbroken, but she’s mostly scared that his answer might get herself in trouble.
“We had a game here last night. Figured we could stay for the party.” Pedri winks.
We. There it was, what Sofie was scared of.
“We?” She asks, anyway, even though she knows the answer.
Pedri then tilts his head to the other side of the room, pointing at something. Or someone. When Sofie looks, she’s met with a figure standing by the door, somebody wearing a Ghostface costume. She rolls her eyes and looks back at Becca.
“I’m getting a drink, have fun you two!” Sofie says.
“Don’t get lost!” Becca yells and Sofie gives her a thumbs-up and a nod, but the moment she turns away, the music swallows her up. Luisa's mansion was like a maze. Sofie knew she was in for a tough time trying to do what Becca had asked.
The music was blaring, making it feel like she'd stepped into a nightclub. There were chill-out rooms with people sprawled on fancy couches, a glittering dance floor with a DJ dropping beats, and dimly-lit hallways that seemed to lead to who-knows-where.
Sofie's search for a drink brought her to a bustling room, where she was comforted by another known face, Chiara. She was dressed as Black Swan and deep into a lively, tipsy, philosophical convo with a small group of friends.
Sofie couldn't resist joining the shenanigans. "Hey, Chiara," she chimed in, with a wide grin, “what are you guys talking about?”
Chiara turned her swan-like gaze toward Sofie, her theatrical makeup adding extra drama to her expression. "Oh, you know, the meaning of life, the universe, and why we all wear costumes on Halloween," she replied, her words accompanied by giggles from her friends.
Sofie grabbed a chair and got cozy, all set to dive into the amusing and philosophical banter.
But the conversation didn’t last long; A muffled scream suddenly pierced through the party chatter, instantly grabbing their attention. Sofie and Chiara exchanged a concerned look.
"Did you hear that?" Sofie asked, her eyes darting around the room.
Chiara nodded, her curiosity piqued. "Yeah, that sounded pretty real. We should check it out."
They both rose from their seats, leaving their group of friends momentarily and headed in the direction of the mysterious scream.
Sofie and Chiara followed the sound down a dimly lit corridor. The place was spooky, and their nerves were on edge, so they just froze, waiting to see what would happen next.
They exchanged nervous glances, ears perked up, hoping to catch any hint of what had caused that scream. The whole scene felt like something out of a suspense movie, and they were bracing themselves for a sinister revelation.
“Hey,”
The girls screamed at the voice behind them, as they jumped in shock. With a hand on her chest, Sofie took a deep breath, looking back to the figure standing now in front of her. Ghostface.
He took off his mask in a hurry. It was Gavi, and he tried to show them there was no need to be scared.
“It’s just me…” Gavi says.
Sofie and Chiara breathed a collective sigh of relief. Sofie was particularly happy to see that it was Pablo, and for a moment, she considered giving him a hug. But that thought made her freeze in her tracks, and her mind drifted back to their time in Ibiza, and the nights they shared. They hadn't talked since then.
“Is everything okay?” Gavi asks, torn between wanting to laugh at their reaction and genuine concern.
“We just heard something weird,” Chiara begins to explain.
Then, out of nowhere, loud banging noises erupted from the same place they'd heard the scream. The sudden, unexpected noise sent a fresh wave of tension through the group.
Sofie, swallowing hard, spoke up. "So, we came here to check it out..."
Pablo, shaking his head with a sly grin, says, "I don't know, I'm not super into the idea of investigating 'bang' sounds." He shot Sofie a knowing look.
“Do you think that that's somebody having sex?” Sofie asks, almost relieved at the possibility, since she had not considered it.
Chiara doesn't buy the theory, it doesn't sound to her like somebody is having a good time. “But if it's something serious, we should at least make sure everyone's safe." She says.
Pablo relented with a sigh. "Alright, fine. Let's check it out. But stick close, and let's not turn this into a horror movie cliche, okay?" He jokes.
With cautious steps, they followed the sounds down the corridor until they reached a closed bedroom door. The weird rhythmic banging noises were definitely coming from inside, and a mix of curiosity and fear gripped them.
Gathering their courage, they exchanged one last glance before Gavi, the designated leader of the group, slowly turned the doorknob. The door creaked open, revealing the dark room on the other side.
When they pushed the door open, they were in for a surprise – a room filled with Roomba vacuum cleaners gone rogue. The little bots were spinning around, bumping into furniture, and beeping like they were part of some bizarre dance routine. It was like a small-scale robot rebellion.
Gavi burst into a loud laugh, "Seems like the robots have picked Halloween for their big uprising, huh?"
“That’s why I don't trust robots…” Sofie says, tip-toeing closer to Pablo, trying to avoid the bots.
“What about the scream?” Chiara couldn't help but bring up the initial reason for their investigation.
The group tenses up once again, remembering what brought them here in the first place.
"It was me," came a voice from the corner of the room. Luisa was sitting down, carefully wrapping a band-aid around her toes. "One of these things nearly took my toe out, and I don't even know how to turn them off."
With everything finally making sense, the group gathered their efforts to grab the rogue Roombas. After some trial and error, they successfully managed to turn off the little vacuum cleaners and carefully piled them up in a closet.

Pablo and Sofie stayed behind after hushing the girls back to the party. In the dimly lit bedroom, it was just the two of them. Pablo sat at the edge of the bed, and Sofie stood by the window. They both felt the urge to talk but weren't sure where to start or what to say. The unspoken tension loomed in the room.
Should they bring up Ibiza? Or should they pretend like nothing happened? They exchanged glances every now and then but mostly remained silent as they gathered their thoughts.
"It's pretty crowded out there..." Sofie says, her thoughts interrupted by the party noise.
Gavi cleared his throat, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, I know... This is better. I prefer being alone."
Sofie couldn't help but giggle,"Well, you're not entirely alone. I'm right here, you know."
Pablo met her gaze and said, "When I'm with you, it doesn't feel like there's anybody else in the room." Gavi's face flushed like a tomato, and his eyes nearly popped out of his head when he realized what he had just let slip. "Do you... um, understand what I'm saying?" he mumbled, his words stumbling out as he anxiously awaited Sofie's response.
“I feel the same way.” Sofie says, her words escaping before she could even fully process what she was saying.
A palpable tension hung in the air as they locked eyes. It felt like an unspoken challenge to see who would look away first. It was like a silent game of vulnerability chicken, and neither of them was ready to blink.
In an instant, Gavi was right in front of her, his hand gently resting on her hips. His eyes pleaded for permission. Sofie, taken aback by his bold move, simply nodded, her eyes fixed on his lips.
He kissed her hungrily and passionately. Their minds immediately turned into a total mess, as they both desperately tried to savor the moment while also trying to let each other know just how much they'd missed this.
Sofie instinctively placed one hand on his chest, while running her fingers through his soft hair with the other. Pablo deepened the kiss, taking his time exploring her mouth and playfully licking her bottom lip.
He carefully guided her to the bed, lowering himself onto her. Their lips finally parted, leaving them breathless and flushed.
They stared into each other’s eyes intently. They couldn’t wait anymore. The desire between them was so strong, neither of them could speak. They both just wanted each other, no more holding back.
Sofie grabbed him tightly by the neck, pulling him closer. After gasping for air, Gavi brought his lips to her again, his hands moving down her sides and gripping her waist firmly.
She took off her shirt and Pablo gently pulled off her lacy pink bra.
“I missed them so much.” Gavi jokes, looking at her breasts. Sofie gives a playful slap on his arm.
“I missed you too.” She whispers in his ears. She can feel the goosebumps all over his body as she says that.
“Are we really doing this?” He asks, tenderly kissing her neck. He can’t seem to keep his mouth away from her body for too long. He knows they don’t have much time together, he’s going back to Barcelona in the morning.
“I want you so, so much.” Sofie answers in between whimpers, she’s already too lost in pleasure to consider the consequences of what she’s doing.
“But we have to be quiet.” Pablo looks at her with a mischievous glint in his eyes. “If somebody hears us moaning, they might get worried for our safety.” He whispers. Sofie has to bite her lip to hold back a giggle.
“I can be quiet.” She promises.
Pablo enters her slowly, taking his time to enjoy every second of their reunion. They get lost in each other and it feels like their first time all over again.
She wraps her legs around him and digs her nails into his back, demanding more of him. His body starts rocking, slowly thrusting harder and faster until he loses control completely.
Their bodies move together easely. Sofie has to put a hand on her mouth to stop herself from crying his name out loud.
The sigh of her desperation is enough to drive him off the edge. He reaches down and starts massaging her clit, just like he knows she likes it. Pablo speeds up his pace, when he senses they’re both close to orgasm.
He collapses in her arms and Sofie holds him close as they reach their peak together.
They have their eyes closed and for a while the only thing on their mind is each other's heartbeat.
But then, Sofie feels her anxiety creeping in, and it is enough to break the magic surrounding them. "We should probably head back to the party," she whispers. To their ears, her words seemed louder than the music outside.
"Right," Pablo mumbles, eyes still closed, lingering in the moment for a little longer.
They quietly slipped out of the bedroom, making their way back to the party without exchanging another word.
Even without speaking, as they get out of the bedroom, they share a sly, knowing look, hinting at the possibility of meeting again, without the need for words.
Sofie, without Gavi noticing, sneakily slipped a piece of paper with her phone number into his pocket.

The Brutal Hearts Club | Agent Whiskey Imagine
Based on the song Use Me by Diplo, Dove Cameron and Sturgill Simpson…
Word Count: 3.9K
Summary: Jack drinks his sorrows between missions at The Brutal Hearts Club. Birdie works at the Brutal Hearts Club. They become unlikely allies when it comes to letting off steam and scratching that itch. OVER 18s ONLY!
Warnings: drinking, pole dancing, smut, a little fighting, booty call, angst
A/N- I adore this song so much right now and with its slight country flair, whilst very much being a club song, I really wanted to use it to write a little imagine and the perfect character was our favourite cowboy himself. Also if you are under 18 and you decide to keep reading and it lands me in trouble I will take it very personally!
ps. I know I teased this a while back, I got busy.
Are you the brutal heart? Are you the brutal heart that I've been lookin' for? 'Cause if you're lookin' for love, you can look through that door
Everyone thinks it’s Friday and Saturday nights that are the big money nights. The nights of the weekend, where the old and young alike walk through the doors of clubs across the country, ordering drinks and dancing until 3 am. Staggering home with cooling sweat on their body that has no effect due to the copious amounts of alcohol flowing through their veins. But not The Brutal Hearts. Thursday nights, that evening just before the masses have time off for the weekend, when moral is low and the hope of days off are so close, yet still so far, that those most desperate say fuck it and walk beneath the big blue neon sign into the depths made for those with brutal hearts.
It’s the perfect place for a man like Jack who gave up on love a long time ago to shake off the jitters left from his last mission. A place he can block out the images of dead bodies he’s left in his wake over the years and be surrounded by those of the living. Those with hearts that beat strong and fearless, forever guarded and living for each moment like it could be their last (and the way he’s seen certain people do coke in the bathroom, it could be).
There’s four levels of the Brutal Hearts Club. There’s the main club room and bar. Neon signs, disco balls, an old light up dancefloor that looks like something from saturday night fever. This was, as the sign above the bar stated, simply for those who only had lonely hearts. Those who drank through their heartache and needed somewhere to just dance it off for the evening. Maybe try their luck and meet a partner to go home with. Where you can find all the popular tracks of the moment played by a DJ with his own lonely heart, still trying to chase Ibiza dreams at 40 something years old.
Jack bypassed this room headed straight for the big red leather coated doors in the back. For the rooms that weren’t just for the hearts temporarily chipped or lonely, but altogether broken and missing.
He reached a set of stairs, both adorned with light up arrows pointing up and down. The up arrow was placed next to another neon depicting a hand of cards, an ace of hearts clearly displayed. Jack didn’t like playing games. He was a simple man, always had been, always will be. He’s fast talking, fast shooting and prefers to just get a task done. It’s got him in plenty of hot water with his boss over the years, but he wouldn’t have become the head of the New York office if he hadn’t been willing to do the things no one else would. The things only one with a brutal heart would do.
Jack headed downstairs instead. Where the shadows grew longer and the hearts felt more hopeless. As he reached the final steps to yet another set of double doors, adorned with cracked red leather, he felt the bass grow stronger, like a defibrillator attempting to shock a heart back to life, the bass making the beating in his chest thump harder, trying to restart something that’s been long dead.
As his still chapped and scraped hands pushed open the door and his eyes instinctively gazed towards the lit stage in the middle of the room, he knew this was going to be no ordinary visit to the Brutal Hearts Club.
Hearts Hearts that break the night in two And arms that can hold you, that's true
“Break a leg out there tonight girl!” the tanned beauty behind her, smiled at her through the mirror as she fixed the fringe on her bubblegum pink wig.
“Thanks Angel, you too.” she called back over her shoulder as the woman adorned in red lingerie with legs for days, made her way over to the dressing room door and out towards the main floor.
Robyn stared at her stage name, scrawled on her mirror in hot pink lipstick so it sat just above her reflection in the mirror, reminding her of who she was here. Where her place was. They didn’t use real names at the brutal hearts. That’s how you got hurt. But she always wondered, ‘how can you break something when it’s already broken?’
“Hey, Birdie!” a voice called into the dressing room, “You’ve got 2 minutes.” Liam, the 30 year old stage hand said as he turned the clipboard in his hand to check his watch. He didn’t wait to escort her, or even make sure she was ready to go, she was always punctual and professional.
She kicked off her fluffy bunny slippers under her dressing table, reaching for the knee high pink boots that complimented her wig and slid her legs into them. Her satin robe hung loose over her silver bodysuit she wore over a pair of fishnet stockings and as she reached the dressing room door, she pulled a bejewelled cowboy hat off of a hat stand.
She stepped up behind the curtain towards the back of the stage as she handed her robe over to Liam who was in turn holding out a coiled length of rope to her. She nervously ran her fingers along the length of it as she readied herself. She looked to the floor as she let out a large breath as she heard the music shift, a short transition track mixed with the sounds of bird song. “AND NOW!” A voice called over the speakers and she clicked her heels together three times, a pre-show habit for luck she had gotten into. The music lowered, “WELCOME TO THE STAGE, YOU CAN’T KEEP THIS LITTLE CANARY IN A CAGE, IT’S BIRDIE!”
The curtain raised as her track began and she slowly stepped forward, her head low, hat covering her face to keep that tension for the Thursday night crowd, just that little bit longer, the coiled rope tapping on her hip. Thursdays at The Brutal Hearts was big show day. All the girls gave their best, most exclusive performance for the highest bidders. The biggest rollers. The broken bankers and card players who had gotten lucky upstairs and made their way down to their level to spend their winnings on some lucky lady. To throw it away again as quickly as they had earned it. Silly 20 something year old white boys who had more money than sense for their age and couldn’t get a girl to look at them unless they paid for it. Or older divorcees looking for a sugar baby now their Mrs has up and left them for being too much of a workaholic. And if that didn’t work and they felt drunk and invincible enough they’d head down yet another flight of stairs to either compete or just bet on the final fights of the night in the underground ring.
She slid down onto her knees, as she began to gyrate her body in time with the beat, across the stage floor. The younger guys whistled and hollered as they sat in the front row and threw ten and twenty dollar bills onto the stage. She twirled her legs around, before rolling onto her back, stretching her legs up in the air before splitting them wide. She focused on her reflection in the mirrored ceiling above her. If she caught a glimpse of herself enough to remind her how sexy and empowered moving like this really made her feel, she could ignore all the eyes on her who merely only saw her as an object to throw money at. A temporary high.
She stood and strutted her way to a pole at the front of the stage, she did a little dip of her knees before gripping the pole hard and twisting herself up onto it, her head tilting to keep her hat on. The aim with pole dancing is to make as many angled lines as possible. To flex and elongate your body, to create curves in places you didn’t realise could be curves. Occasionally you could hold things very straight for a show of power and strength but otherwise, you want to keep that essence of a moving wave as it rolls into the shore, graceful yet powerful. She twisted herself up towards the top of the pole, curling herself into a ball before dropping her whole body down the pole for dramatic effect, tightening her muscles and catching herself again at the last minute. She continued to spin low as she unfurled her limbs like petals of a flower, allowing her a small window in which to survey her crowd and pick her unsuspecting victim. That’s when she locked eyes with him. His sunglasses sat on the bridge of his aquiline nose, cowboy hat dipped low, his hand reaching into the pocket of his leather jacket as he made his way towards the stage.
She rolled herself off of the pole and onto her knees at the edge of the stage before him. She watched as he took off his own hat, placing a few hundreds into the band around it. He then reached out and took her hat off of her head and replaced it with his own, staking his claim, before walking away and taking a seat in a single, crackled leather armchair two rows back from the stage. He placed her bejewelled hat upon his knee before holding two fingers up to usher over a waitress to take his drink order as he waited.
So use me
Birdie finished up her set before making her way back to the dressing room to change. She carefully took her mystery stranger’s hat off of her head, placing the money that was tucked into the hat into a jar full of nicknacks and brightly coloured hair scrunchies on her dressing table. She then pulled off her wig, before releasing her long dark tresses from the wig cap that had been underneath. She shook out her hair before prying off her boots and changing into a dark purple, strapped bodice two piece. She then slipped her legs into a pair of black knee high boots and was ready to get back out on the floor. She grabbed her mystery cowboy’s hat, as she headed out the door, placing it back on her head so he would recognise her without the pink wig on.
As she scanned the crowd, she saw him standing at the bar ordering another drink, her bejewelled hat hanging off his fingers.
“I believe you have something of mine.” she said, announcing her presence.
His eyes looked her up and down as his glass of whiskey was placed on the bar top.
“You give me mine, I’ll give you yours.” he played along with her, confidence times a million.
She leaned into him, observing the deep brown of his eyes, before trailing her eyes down his nose, then taking in his moustache. She couldn’t help but lick her own lips as her eyes finally gazed on his plush lower lip.
Her hand reached up to take his hat off of her head and place it gently back on his. He took a sip of his whiskey before he lifted her hat up and balanced it on her head. “This colour suits you better.” he says quietly as his fingers catch a few strands of her hair.
“Hey Sweetheart.” a young 20 something practically shouts as he sidles up on the other side of her. She aims to ignore him, keeping her attention on her mystery stranger but the sudden feeling of the guy’s hands on her ass changes everything. “Any chance of getting a private dance, beautiful?” his voice lilts along with his body. His eyes are glassy, he’s clearly drunk.
Jack watches as her face changes, her body turning towards him. He senses her rage.
“Sorry bud, she’s taken.” Jack proudly says, strutting forward to stand between the drunken douchebag and his new acquaintance.
“Ahhh come on man. Surely we can come to an arrangement. How much do you want?” The drunk propositions.
Jack just stares at him as if to say ‘are you serious?’
“Or we can go halves? Make it a cheaper night for yo-” he doesn’t even finish his sentence before Jack is punching him square in the face.
“Oh shit.” Robyn murrmers.
“Come on Birdie.” Jack says, taking her hand with the same one he had just used to punch the guy in front of them in the face, pulling her towards the back.
She took a brief look over her shoulder to see the guy, bent over the bar top, his hand holding his nose wailing.
Use me.
It may have been Birdie’s first time seeing him here, but it was clear it was not his first time. He pulled her closer to the back rooms before encouraging her to pick one of the empty ones for them to slip into.
“That was pretty heroic.” she cooed as she began to pace around him when they got into the room.
He quickly made himself comfortable on the red velvet sofa placed in the middle of the room. He watched as she crossed over to a panel on the wall, picking her personal private playlist and hitting shuffle. “With a punch like that, are you a full time cowboy?” she asked as she slid down the wall onto all fours and began stalking like a cat across the floor before him.
Jack couldn’t help but feel his pants begin to grow tight as he watched her ass cheeks sway back and forth as she grew ever closer to him.
“Something like that.” he teased back as she came to a stop at his ankles. Her fingers ghosting up his legs before she split his knees, perching herself back on her heels as she sat between them looking up at him.
“You know they’re probably gonna come find you and kick you out for punching that guy.”
“Let’s just hope we both get what we want before that happens then.”
“What we want? I thought the whole point of this game is that you get what you want.”
“Come on Birdie,” he said, hooking his finger under her chin, his thumb turning to brush up her jaw, “you telling me there’s nothing you want from me?”
I don’t mind at all I don’t mind that you only call me when you want And I’m just glad you want me at all
She had let him book them into a hotel. She had broken her one rule ‘don’t sleep with the customer’ but Jack wasn’t a customer. Not anymore. Was he ever? He was enchanting and charming and there had been something familiar about him from the get go. “Use me.” he had said as he lay back amidst the pillows, his fingers only ghosting her skin as she rode him.
That was 5 days ago. He had made her put his number in her phone. For whenever she wanted to ‘use him again’ he had said. She swore to herself she wouldn’t, it was one night, but now she was sitting on her sofa, an uncontrollable need between her legs and the memory of a man she so wanted between them. The phone was in her hand, an eggplant and peach emoji sent over before she realised she had done it.
She was left waiting for a minute, watching the dots on the screen when an address came through.
And hearts Hearts that break the night in two And arms that can hold you, that’s true
To her surprise the building wasn’t a hotel, it was an apartment building. His apartment building.
The doorman let her in and she took the elevator up to the 15th floor. He had the door open the moment the elevator bell went ding. He was standing leaning against the door frame, arms folded, shirt sleeves rolled up. Neither of them said anything as she made her way into the apartment. She stood frozen in the entryway as he closed the door behind her.
She waited in anticipation as she felt his chest press into her back. His fingers grazed the sides of her coat, his head dipping to nuzzle into the scent of her neck. He felt her gasp and her body relax as his lips brushed the skin of her neck. “What do you want, Birdie?”
“Use me.”
So use me, So use me,
His hands suddenly became fierce and firm, ripping her coat off exposing, to his delight, she was only wearing lingerie underneath. It made him groan as he turned her, his arms wrapping around her, his face getting buried in her breasts, as he kissed and licked at them. He lifted her with one hand, the other continuing to paw at her chest as she wrapped her legs around his waist, her arms braced tightly around his neck, keeping his lips close to her skin. She felt like she was on fire.
He swiftly carried her to his bedroom, dropping her onto the bed. She lay back, propping herself up on her elbows as he began to strip down. The sound of his belt unbuckling and being ripped from his belt loops only made the ache between her legs worse and he couldn’t help but smirk as he noticed how she began to rub her thighs together with need, her lips pulling between her teeth as she sized up her meal.
“Fuck.” he groaned as he raced forward grabbing the sides of her face and smashing his lips into hers. She playfully nipped at his lower lip and it made him grow hungrier still. She was being cheeky, she wanted to be punished, she wanted to be used.
His hands reached down for her thighs, his lips breaking away from hers at the last second as he flipped her over. His hands reached for her ass, positioning it up high in the air as he let his hand come down on her right cheek with a loud crack.
“Mmm” she moaned as she rocked back and forth slightly before turning her head to fix her eyes on him. Those angel eyes, those butter wouldn’t melt eyes only 5 days ago, now her gaze was replaced with something else.
“God, you’re something else.” he professed as he leant a knee on the edge of the bed, grabbing her face and smashing his lips to hers once more.
“Fuck me, Jack.” she cooed as she began to pull her face away. For a moment he thought he saw something else in her eyes. It was quick like a flash, one second there and then gone again, just like that. But Jack was no fool, he would know that look anywhere.
Are we brutal hearts? Are we brutal hearts that break the night in two? 'Cause I just want this night with you I don't like the man (no, I don't like the man) I don't like the man that I am (you are) 'Cause I just want this night with you So let's take this night from black to blue So let's take this night from black to blue
He shook off the look. That reminder of the lonely heart within him. His own brutal heart, desperate to be used. Maybe that’s why they had both been drawn to the club in the first place.
He let his hand run down the length of her sides, fingers savouring the feeling of her soft skin beneath his fingertips until he reached her panties. He ran his fingers along the wet seam as she squirmed under his touch. He continued to tease her entrance as he freed himself from his pants, his hand giving his length a few pumps for good measure. He then reached out to pull her underwear down her legs, her head turning back to watch with her wanting, desperate look again.
He placed one finger into her heat, stretching her out and then another and her head hung in satisfaction as she let out a long slow gasp. He pumped his fingers inside her once, twice before pulling out. She let out a little whine at the loss, her head turning, eyes searching for him once more when he suddenly lined himself up and thrust himself deep inside her in one smooth motion. She gasped louder with the feeling. He slowly began to rock inside her as the flat of his hand palmed her ass before sliding up her back, his fingers hooking around the clasp of her bra as he pulled her up to meet him, his lips hungry for her moans. His hand clasped gently around her throat as he thrust up into her, she was so tight in this position.
“Fuck, baby.” he moaned into her mouth, her arm reaching behind her to wrap around the back of his neck in an attempt to keep him close, desperate for that human connection, desperate to feel something, desperate to be loved.
So use me So use me Hey
He nipped at her neck, his fingers teasing her sensitive clit as he thrust deep inside her. She met him with every thrust, grinding back on him as he pounded into her faster and hard. He could feel her growing tighter, her climax building, muscles squeezing around him. “Give it to me baby.” he commanded, his fingers applying even more pressure to her sensitive nub.
“Oh fuck!” she cried as her high took over, he released her body from its hold, her hands coming down on the bed to brace herself. His thrusts slowed as she continued to slowly grind back against him, riding out her high.
When he felt her stop, he pulled out, his hands reaching for her hips rolling her over, encouraging her onto her back. He leant over the bed as she began to quickly shuffle up towards the headboard to allow him room and he spread her legs before reaching down to run his tongue up the length of her sex, collecting as much of her slick into his mouth as he could.
At seeing him do this her hunger returned. He positioned himself back between her legs and her hands wrapped around his back, fingernails grazing his skin as he thrust back inside her again. She was still so sensitive and it wasn’t long before she began to feel her next climax beginning to build.
“Come on baby, one more.” Jack almost snarled as his own hunger took over, his body leaning over her tightly, his fingers wrapping around her neck once more as he continued to pound her into the mattress.
“Uh fuck. Jack, JACK!” she cried.
“That’s it baby, say my name.”
They both came within quick succession of each other, she felt him move to pull out but she held him tighter, forcing him to finish inside her, after all she was on the pill she didn’t have to worry about a baby after this, she just needed to feel him. His chest on hers, his heartbeat, beating with hers, the pulsing of his cock in her pussy. It was almost a tender moment, but as Jack leaned back to look at her face he saw it again, that flash of pain. He couldn’t help but meet it with his own this time. Any other time it could have been a sweet moment, but this wasn’t that moment. This wasn’t that kind of sex. It was just two brutal hearts, looking to be used.
Use me. Use me.

𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨 ; ʙᴇᴀᴄʜ ʜᴜᴛ ᴘʀᴏᴍᴘᴛ !
what are your thoughts on max & dejan’s exit last night? why didn’t you vote for them?
“ man, was that only last night ? that feels like ages ago. ” frankie waits for clarification from the camera crew. it’s true what they say — a day on the inside feels like a week on the outside. “ sorry. so much has happened in the past few days, it’s just like... the inside of my brain right now looks like you gave a child a magic marker and just let them go absolutely balls-to-the-wall wild with it. ” last night, she’d been crying about max leaving ( but it was hay fever ), fighting with callie, and then attempting to patch things up with her. today, she can’t even think about any of that, because she was yanked out of bed at the crack of dawn and transplanted to a new villa, with six new people. “ i wanted to vote for them, but callie wanted rhys and bash. she’s been here longer, she knows the group dynamics better, so ultimately i let her do the choosing. it hurt to see max go, but i trust callie’s judgement. ”
how are you feeling about the start of casa amor?
“ honestly, i’m not gonna lie, i still don’t really know what casa amor is ? it’s like, we’re taken from our original partners and given all these new options ? why not just put them in with all of us ? ” unless the intention is to see if their behaviour differs when they’re away, like a boys holiday to ibiza where everybody fucks a stranger. but nobody’s official at the moment, so it feels like there’s not that much at stake. “ it’s actually nice to be away from all the drama. i know some of the originals — us, not the vampires — are super depressed about the whole thing, but that’s such a buzzkill for the new people. like, they’re just trying to have a good time, don’t shit all over them because you can’t get your dick sucked. i’m just gonna go with the flow and try to enjoy it, because you never know when you’re gonna get sent home to florida. ”
are there any new islanders that have caught your attention? who?
“ yeah, but more in a you seem fun to hang out with way than in a damn girl way. val’s sexy, mali’s cool, layla has a good vibe. even phoebe, which shocked me, because i did cheer in high school and had a really bad experience that basically scarred me for life. you ever see the movie easy a ? it was like that but with cheerleaders. but phoebe’s not a bitch. uh... who else ? miles caught my attention, mostly because he blundered through his introduction. ” frankie’s snort-laughing as she attempts an impression. “ hi, i’m... smoking hot ! ” she’s definitely not gonna let that one go. “ but it was actually really endearing. he’s hot, he’s made it pretty clear he thinks i’m hot, and josh said he’s into me and that i should give him a shot. jury’s still out on whether i will. ” shrugging her shoulders, she bites down on her lip. “ i’m not actively looking to get to know someone, because i’m very happy in my current couple. but if somebody stumbles into my eyeline and there’s a vibe ? i’m not going to shut anything down before i decide it’s run its course. ”
are there any new islanders you don’t see yourself vibing with?
“ adela, which is a bummer because she’s super cute, but i can already tell she doesn’t like me and has like a wasp in her vag about it. i don’t know if she feels threatened because the title of resident sporty good time girl has already been claimed, or if she just hates the fact that everyone wants to fuck me, but it sounds like a her problem. i’m not getting involved. take it up with the ofcom therapist, dude. ”
do you think that your head could be turned?
frankie purses her lips, considering her answer ( which is more than she’s done for any of the other questions ). “ honestly, not really. i think they’d have to graft really hard to turn my head. callie and i have a good thing going, i’m excited to see if it becomes more than what it is. but at the same time, it’s been four days, and i said i wanted to keep my options open so... i’m not gonna shoot anyone down on day one. if they want to put their grafting boots on, they’re welcome to — who am i to stop people from telling me i’m sexy — but yeah, i don’t know if anyone else will have that same intensity and that chemistry with me that callie does. ”
what do you think your ‘other half’ is up to in the other villa right now? how are you feeling about them?
“ oh man, callie is gonna be so pissed about this. i’m just hoping she takes this as like, a good opportunity. obviously you get tested in the real world. people will hit on me, people will hit on her, sometimes we’ll want to explore that, and we’ll have to navigate that as a couple if this is going to work. ” all of that’s true, and it doesn’t help that probably six out of six bombshells will be attempting to whistle careless whisper against callie’s snatch, but frankie has faith. “ selfishly, i hope she isn’t currently dry-humping some random from michigan, but i don’t put it past the bombshells not to lay it on like war paint. callie’s the fittest girl in there, she’s got a good heart, and she’s popular with viewers. i wanted her enough to steal her, so why wouldn’t they ? i just hope she decides that i’m worth the trouble of sticking around. ”

Escape the ordinary and dive into electrifying festivals or a captivating film. This weekend offers something for every taste, from adrenaline-pumping dance music in Japan to a humorous British mystery. Including a one-of-a-kind closing party from standout artist Fever Ray. The festival features a big line-up including Butch Kassidy, Jessica Winter, CASisDEAD, Flowdan, Giant Swan, Nkisi, Gilla Band, Space Afrika, Max Cooper, Paranoid London, Free Love, The Bug Club plus more Tickets & more info Snow Machine Japan 26 Feb – 2 Mar This weekend the international festival raising eyebrows taking festival-goers to the Eastern hemisphere to the wonderful country of Japan. However, this festival lures its party-loving dance music people for four full-on days of the best dance music on the Apres. Given most of apres festivals I usually list take place in France. Snow Machine is something a little different for anyone up for a global adventure. By day party people can take in all the sights of Hakuba Valley having their best dance-off, Apres style on the atmospheric mountain stages which host a line-up of the finest DJs. Moving the party on to dusk where the main arena comes alive for one hell of a rave on the backdrop of magnificent surroundings of the slopes. This festival delivers on a global scale! Incorporating travel, a ski trip, and a rave all rolled into one. And if you've never been to Japan on the slopes this is the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed! Hosting homegrown global alist DJs including Claptone, Nina Kraviz, Denis Sulta, Todd Terje Dj Set, Diplo, Sneaky Sound System, George Fitzgerald Dj Set, Illy, Blusher, Ewan Mcvicar, Bob Moses Club Set, Hilltop Hoods, Jimi the Kween, Busy P, Lime Cordiale, Marc Rebillet, Risa Taniguchi, Satoshi Tomiie, Shinichi Osawa, Sideboob Tickets & more info Moovin n Groovin 23 Feb After a few successful intimate warehouse & terrace parties, this month Moovin & Groovin is hosting its humble and full-throttle party this time taking over the loft space at one of Birmingham's primetime clubbing hotspots, Lab11 in Digbeth. This is where your weekend begins! Reminding its devoted clubbers of just how dam fine the smaller warehouse loft parties are. Iconic of the original house party! Moovin n Groovin is all about creating the best vibes. Expect a night of heavy beats and a packed dancefloor the line-up features Dan Schofield, George Abraham, Ella Knight, Lewis Carroll, Don't Be Shy, and maybe a few surprises. Tickets & more info LoveJuice - Road To Ibiza Rocks Launch Party 23 Feb There is no better way than to get ready for the summer season in Ibiza with one massive all-night party in one of the longest-running clubs in London. Ministry of Sound opened its doors in 1991 with inspiration from house music clubs in New York City. It was the first club to dedicate its sound to house music. Hosting some of the biggest and most famous clubbing brands in history. Always pulling in the max capacity crowds and the most famous DJs flying in from all over the globe to sell out events. As the weekend is cookin' up a dance music storm LoveJuice takes over the reign, with the Road To Ibiza Rocks launch party. Giving all its clubbers a taste of what's to come this summer in Ibiza. Ibiza Rocks has been one of the big success stories of Ibiza sellout weekly parties and hosting weekly residences drawing in a crowd. There is no better place to host their parties, it's a combination made of the house music gods. With a line-up that's fire this weekend, MOS is the place to live your clubbing dreams. The line-up features Sammy Porter, George Mensah, Secondcity, Beyond Chicago, Patrick Nazemi, Charlotte Van de Peer, JAYDAA, Annabel Stop It, Tilli Murphy, Sonny Kane, Brian Smith, Charlie Webb, Macy Lancaster, Maxwell and more. Tickets & more info Wicked Little Letters 23 Feb Fancy catching a film this weekend. The Odean cinema has a cracking new film showing this weekend, across the UK, for all the lovers of the big screen. Starring lead roles from Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley. It's a bit of a whodunit – but the question is who sent the letters. Taking place in the 1920 era, when curtain twitching was a thing. Incoming (Olivia Coleman) spinster Edith Swan is the ultimate curtain twitcher. Who starts to receive obscene letters in her doormat. Getting the community in a frenzy trying to establish the culprit of such offensive doings. Pointing the finger towards (Jessie Buckley) Rose Gooding. Never one to spoil a good plot that is as much as I'm going to give away. But after a hard week at work and in-need-of some downtime, it's a film I would highly recommend for the weekend ahead! Have you checked the weather? Let's face it - going to the cinema today is a full-on experience. From the mega surround sound, reclining chairs, a bar, and food it's perfect for a date night, a night out with the girls, or going solo. Already receiving rave reviews, lots of people are talking about this fabulous British Comedy. It's the perfect thing to get you out of the indoors for some for feel good laughter, helping to forget the miserable UK weather outside. Tickets & more info Read the full article

Chapter 01 | Baila Conmigo
“Bebé, no sé si habla' mucho español
Si entiende' cuando digo "Mi amor"
(...)
Bésame, solo una vez
Así tengo un motivo pa' volverte a ver”
“There’s no better cure for a broken heart than Gin Tonic and Spanish men.” Rebecca was wearing three different sunhats and every single beach robe she could find. They were sitting crossed legged in Sofie’s bedroom floor, packing for their upcoming trip. It was Rebecca’s idea, of course. She has spent every summer in Ibiza since she was old enough to get on a plane by herself, and has begged her best friend to come with her every year since. But Sofie had Thomas and they spent all the summers with his family in his hometown.
“I do like Gin Tonic.” Sofie giggled. “But no men on this trip. All I want from Ibiza is a suntan and a light hungover.”
“You should still pack some lingerie, just in case.”
They were leaving the next morning, with Chiara and Luisa meeting them at the airport. Out of their gigantic group of friends, they were the only ones single, so it was natural for the girls to feel responsible for Sofie. She had a lot to learn, they said. She got added to their private group chat, ‘single girls club’, the day after the breakup. Even now, a couple weeks later, she hadn’t felt lonely, not even for a minute.
“And you need new sunglasses.”
**
The anxiety only hit her when they landed. The realization of what she was doing. She was a free woman now, whatever that means. It started to feel like a big weight to carry, the sole responsibility of making herself happy. It was so easy to give that up before, in the name of love. Now she doesn’t know what to do with it.
“Let’s get mimosas, like, immediately!” Luisa was the most outgoing one in their little group, and not up for debate she was also the prettiest. Long wavy blonde hair, bambi blue eyes, greek goddess-like body. She was a natural leader. Her confidence made it easy to follow her, and that’s what Sofie decided to do.
“Yes, please!”
“The fact that I’m not wearing a bikini already is a crime.” Chiara was the youngest but still a lot more experienced in those adventures than Sofie. Chiara’s mother was a successful supermodel in the early 90’s and she inherited her mother’s best features. Straight brown hair, light tan skin. She was the fashionista of the group.
Rebecca was the more centered, mature, mother-like personality of the four. She had the best taste in music and always had a great new book recommendation. It seemed like she was always worried about something more important than everybody else. She was the smart one.
Sofie was the new girl, and had yet to discover her place in the entourage.
The girls rented a luxurious and isolated villa in Sant Josep. Four spacious bedrooms, an infinity pool and cozy patio were privileges their parents credit cards were able to pay. They all came from rich families, their friendship was as written in the stars as carefully planned by their mothers. They met on play dates when they were little kids. They had ballet and foreign language classes together. As teenages they learned how to lie to their parents together. They went to college together. Now, as brand new adults, they were learning how to be women together.
“Okay, what about this one?”
They were in the villa living room, after a few mimosas, choosing which pictures to post. That was an important part of the single’s business. It was crucial for your thirst traps to look as hot as possible yet tasteful and lady-like. According to Luisa, you want to look like a duchess and a slut.
“Yes, post it.”
Chiara then turned to Sofie. “Okay, so, our itinerary only starts tomorrow, but you want to let people know you’re in town.” They had plans for the next day, party with people Sofie never met and concerts of artists she never heard of. She tried not to show how uncultured and naive that made her feel. “You should post this one. And tag the village.” It was a pic of Sofie in a bikini, she was posing in front of the infinity pool. It was a milestone, really. Her first insta post as a single woman.
**
In the afternoon Rebecca decided to take Sofie on a walk.
“Let’s take it slow on the first day, maybe do some shopping.”
At that point everything sounded like a good idea. Sofie could feel her cheeks burning red with excitement. Ibiza was as beautiful and as interesting as expected. The streets were cloaked in flowers and vines. The sound of birds humming and the clashing waves in the distance made just walking around the island a magical and spiritual experience. They entered a number of small stores, smelling, touching and taking pictures of everything they saw. It’s always a good feeling to be a tourist in a beautiful place.
“This place looks nice.”
It was a bar, semi-open with a pitched bamboo roof, located right in front of the beach. The stone walls and greenery created a peaceful and inviting view. That, and the orange from the sunset on the horizon. Becca seemed to agree and without another word the girls entered the bar. They ordered local craft beers and tapas and sat down in silence for a few minutes to simply rest and enjoy the view. With the moonrise, the glow of fairy lights started to illuminate the bar.
“How devoted are you to that ‘no men’ rule?”
The girls were sitting facing each other on the table closest to the sea and Rebecca leaned over, almost whispering her question. Jazz music playing in the background and a bottle of beer in hand, Sofie frowned.
“We literally just got here. I would say pretty devoted.”
“Okay, well, look, it’s just those guys are totally checking us out.”
Sofie looked in the direction her friend’s eyes were aimed. Two boys, to be more precise. A brunette and a blonde, if Sofie had to describe.
“They’re cute…” They really were cute.
“Pick one!”
“What?”
“Pick one! I’ll take the other.” Rebecca winked.
“What did we just talk about?”
“Sorry, got distracted. They’re super cute. Sorry.”
“Also, the brunette.” Sofie giggled. The brunette looked older and charming, deep brown eyes– he was just her type.
“Oh my god, they’re coming over.”
It became obvious very quickly that the boys also took their pick, and it didn’t match theirs. The charming brunette looked head over heels for Rebecca, while the blonde one stared awkwardly at Sofie. Pedro and Pablo, they introduced themselves. Chip ‘n Dale, Sofie thought to herself. After only a few minutes Pedro and Rebecca’a chemistry was flooding the table. Their giggling and flirty stares started to become uncomfortable for the other two.
“Do you want to take a walk?” It was clear they got abandoned by their friends, so Sofie did the polite thing and offered Pablo a way out of that conversation. The boy looked like a deer caught in the headlights. He had beautiful eyes and Sofie blushed with the thought. The boy nodded in agreement.
“Are you sure?” Rebecca asked, partially worried she was being a bad friend and partially hopeful. Sofie almost rolled her eyes.
“Yes, pretty sure.”
**
“You’re a professional football player?”
“Yes.” Pablo laughed at the sound of shock in her voice. Sofie then stopped herself to stare at him for a second, examining his features. They were making small talk– how old are you; where are you from; what do you work with. His answer caught her off guard.
“I used to love football.” She said softly, smiling at herself. “When I was a kid my dad would take me to every single Benfica home game.”
“What happened?” Pablo frowned. “You don’t like it anymore?”
“My dad passed away.”
“Oh. Shit.” There was an awkward silence. “I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay, really.” Sofie giggled at the boy’s scared look, she seemed it before and was already used to it. “It has been a while. It’s just, football was our thing, you know?”
“Do you miss it? Nevermind, that’s a stupid question!”
“No, no, it’s okay.” She had a hand on his shoulder. They have been walking for a few minutes and even though they were in an isolated part of the beach, they could hear distant edm music; very different from the sound of birds during the day. The moon was high in the sky at that point. “I do miss it. A lot. But it’s been a long time, and with every passing season there’s more to learn about the game. I don’t know how to go back into the loop.” She didn’t even know who he was, that’s how ‘out of the loop’ she was.
“I guess you just do. If you wanted. I guess you just come back.”
He was right. She heard that before, from her therapist. Going back to doing the things she loved. Instead she decided to quit therapy and keep herself in the denial phase of grief. But Pablo was right. And he looked beautiful under the moonlight. His hair waving with the ocean breeze, his eyes shining brighter than the paper lanterns around them. She wanted to hold his hand. Her whole day felt like a fairytale after weeks of nightmares and she didn’t want to talk about her father or football anymore. She wanted to kiss him and end her day on a win. Later she would blame her overly confident behavior on the mimosas.
“Do you wanna go back to the villa with me?”

Reviews 370: Coyote
I have been mostly absent as of late due to the pressures of completing my PhD studies, but now that the work there is finishing, I am trying to return to regular reviewing. And for months and months now, one of the records I’ve most wanted to discuss has been Coyote’s Buzzard Country, released last year on their home station Is it Balearic? Recordings. In fact, my delay has been so extreme that, not only has Coyote released an accompanying Buzzard Country Remixes 12”—which I will cover here as well—they have also dropped the incredible Return to Life 12”, and even announced a new 2xLP slated for the summer called The Mystery Light. But better late than never, and there is no way I can pass up the chance to at last write in depth about the music of Timm Sure and Ampo. I say “at last” because, despite the fact that I consider Coyote amongst my very favorite recording artists, you would be forgiven for not knowing that by scanning the Sun Lounge archives. Though I’ve had opportunity to discuss their work here and there via remixes (such as on Blank & Jones’ Relax: The Sunset Sessions 2 and Joe Morris’ Cloud Nine 12”), by some strange turn of fate, Coyote has released no vinyl of their own since this blog’s inception...something that only changed very recently. Indeed, prior to 2020, the last time the duo put out solo works on wax was their stunning 2016 run, which included the Song Dogs LP, the Fight the Future 12” on Clandestino, and the seventh EP in their long running self-titled series on Is It Balearic? Which is not to say they weren’t active, and in fact, Timm Sure and Ampo delivered a really great set of digital singles and EPs in collaboration with Music for Dreams, and additionally, they remained active with remix and DJ work. As well, Buzzard Country was due quite a bit earlier than 2020, but was unfortunately plagued by production delays. To at last get to the point, this is all a roundabout way of saying that I am really excited to have plenty of Coyote to write about now and in the future, so that I can finally pay proper tribute to this foundational duo of the modern balearic beat.
As I’ve explored the balearic soundworld, Ampo and Timm Sure have always been beacons of light guiding me on my path, whether through their eclectic productions as Coyote, through the curation of Is It Balearic?, Über, and the Magic Wand edit series, or through their mixes and DJ sets, which are typically loaded with unheard treasures that lean towards the trippier and dubbier ends of the chill out spectrum. And it is this tendency towards the psychoactive that most endears me to Coyote, for the duo have always championed an authentic balearic spirit, one that foregrounds the music’s connections to the hippie hedonist heydays of Ibiza, to the second summer of love, and to a spirit of ecstatic abandon, one that is equally imbued with a magical sense of melancholy…of a feeling of being in paradise, but knowing it can’t last…as if the moments of revelatory magic—of wild nights dancing and sunrise comedowns—are tempered in real-time with senses of longing and regret. Which brings me finally to Buzzard Country, Coyote’s fifth full-length LP and a pitch-perfect encapsulation of their signature mixture of wistful melodic nostalgia and daydream seaside grooving. Across the album, baggy beats morph between downbeat disco, stoner dub, and world exotica while bottom heavy basslines work the body. Echoing vocal samples thread around hand drums tapestries, emotional washes of synthesis flow over radiant piano chords, and at crucial moments, the exotica guitar flourishes of longtime collaborator Saro Tribastone carry the mind away to lands of faraway fantasy. As for the Buzzard Country Remixes 12”, the A-side is given over to the Hardway Brothers, who brilliantly transform the album’s “Sun Culture” into varying landscapes of ultra deep Chain Reaction style dub wizardry. Then on the B-side, Woolfy vs. Projections and Max Essa respectively flip album stand outs “Shimmer Dub” and “Ranura de Marihuana” into their own specific strains of equatorial dancefloor euphoria, with each remix pushing the mind, body, and spirit towards maximal beach boogie mania.
Coyote - Buzzard Country (Is It Balearic? Recordings, 2020) “Soaring” begins with buzzard calls and hovering breaths of synthesis evoking a new dawn. Ripples form in the ether via bubbling squarewave synth leads, and pulsating dub bass sits beneath a blanket of sighing strings. The carrion calls continue streaking through the mix and celestial pianos rain down while echoing playfully across the spectrum. Plucked bass electronics bounce in counterpoint and hesitate woodwind glimmers call to mind flashing laser lights beneath a beautiful sea surface…almost as if a flute has been transmuted into a rapid fire fractal vibration. At times the strings back away, leaving layers of rainbow colored ocean ambiance to flutter and dance, all before ending with white noise delay oscillations that mimic the swell of ocean waves. Then in “Soft Top Saab,” an echo-soaked voice muses on the sunrise, with chills running down the spine as the solar affirmations are increasingly surrounded by space age string synths, and by Sara Tribastone’s mystical guitar filigrees. Reversing melodies enter the spectrum and swell the heart while shakers and tambourines hold a gentle beat. Tribastone’s guitar serenades softly overhead, with plucked textures of synthetic wood and stone dancing in the background. Further delay-laced pianos fade into view, with the track ebbing and flowing…growing and receding…and sometimes backing down into understated back and forth between guitar and piano, wherein harmonious brass layers and swells of spectral space glitter moving at the periphery. The result is a conversational interchange between seaside melancholy and romantic nostalgia, one which is eventually superseded by cosmic flutters, soft six string dances, and the spoken spells of a reggae mystic, who gives thanks to the sun, and its bounty of restorative light.
Dusty acoustic guitars and sunrise vapors introduce “Shimmer Dub,” while dancing dub bass portends the first real taste of a groove. A rocking hypno-rhythm comes into focus and laid back snares guide the infectious glide, while tablas roll overhead and evocative vocal layers thread through the mix. Steel pan synths are seen through the titular shimmer and wavering wavefronts of blurred melody wash over everything, until the mix drops down into a haze of stoned exotica comprised of a minimalist pallet of tabla rhythms, bleary-eyed pads, and thrilling vocal incantations…the effect like awakening on the shores of some faraway ocean paradise, with visages of desert caravan rituals preceding in the distance. The dubbed out groove eventually resurges, with passages given over to extended echo percussion experiments and the fragile songs of tropical idiophones. Feminine vocals glow like some intoxicating gas of multi-hued magic, and springy basslines guide the body while hi-hats and snare work through a psychedelic skank. Smoldering currents of ether move through the stereo field and moments of subtle intensity erupt from the horizontal vibe out…with airy woodwinds shrouded in static, claps cracking, and hand drums creating webs of groove mesmerism. And as the beat starts to vaporize, echo oscillations set the air aflame amidst fantasy orchestrations.
“Ranura de Marihuana” bathes in echo acoustic guitars that seem beamed in from some distant past…these evocations of classical folk music futurized via layers of fx. An ecstatic scream washes the mix clean, and a four-to-the-floor kick drum emerges to pound in the void, while overhead, Flamenco-indebted guitars spin webs of magic and reverberating vocals call to the spirits of sea and sky….sometimes whispering, other times shrieking wildly into the night. Sub-earthen bass movements are felt more than head, with exotic dub lines moving far beneath the surface. Bongos and congas pop and nervous shaker patterns lead the downbeat disco strut, while guitars work through further Mediterranean hooks and Iberian flourishes. A moment is given over to heavy bass and kaleidoscopic hand percussion–with scatting vocals, reverberating snaps, and lost souls wailing in desperation–and when the groove snaps back, there are touches of tango kissing the preceding, which bring to mind a rose-in-mouth glide across some dark and mysterious dancefloor, wherein spindly psych folk guitar melodies work the mind and airy drum rhythmics entrance the body. The kick climbs back towards dancefloor strength, with desert mystic percussions moving all around the mix and vocals morphing though fever dream echo layers. Elements from across the track refract through oscillating delay machines, and touches of rave haunt the rhythms, especially as subsonic basslines and subdued breakbeats work together.
A single piano note brings light to the darkness in “Sun Culture” and layers of radiance rain down in the form of heart-melting piano chordscapes, with some of that Screamadelica soul bliss suffusing the progressions. Warming pads envelope everything and deep dub pulses walk down white sand beaches, with shakers and lysergic breaths giving shape to the groove. Hi-hats, snare taps, and beachside bongos enter and buzzing guitar notes give off waves of golden light while overhead, liquids drip from the roofs of ocean cliff caverns. The single piano note continues to glow while souflul chords hold the mind in a state of psychedelic rapture, and space age ethers blind all vision as they spread outwards, then recede. Coyote move the track progressively towards a state of horizontal bliss, with almost everything washing away except the summery piano incantations, which are so soaked in reverb as to generate billowing cloudforms with every single note. Hushed rhythms return and hand drums take on a slight sense of urgency while pads generate layers of oceanic warmth, resulting in an audial invitation to greet the rising sun, and a naturalistic tribute to crashing waves and drifting clouds.
Intergalactic pads breath in “Dos Canas,” with tones wispy and suffused with inner light. Palm-muting electric guitars dance like bubbles through the ocean blue, and a touch of kosmische ambiance is soon tempered by bulbous dub basslines and splayed out layers of percussion, wherein the mechanic and organic merge seamlessly. Electroid sketches and seed shakers move in time as a slow and low balearic skank emerges, with glorious tones of brass pulsing overhead before ascending to the heavens on currents of humid tropical air. Hand drums circle the mix as the heavy atmospheres recede, leaving vaporous rhythms and golden synth strands to intertwine. Heartwarming chords give off mirage shimmers as the dub bass works its way back in, bringing with it further layers of world drum delirium. Soft sirens pan before giving way to more of the ascendent brass synthesis, and hisses of white noise add layers of subtle psychotropia. Snares are blasted into bursts of desert sand and all throughout the mix, various strands of melody and harmony are caught within oscillating delay cycles…progressively distorting and roaring into the ether. Shakers and 16th note hi-hats lead the groove while bongos and idiophones dance playfully against the snare and kick, until it all breaks down into an ambient outro of serene static, sighing strings, and layers of phasing rainbow light.
“Feedback Valley” closes the show with synth incantations portending the glow of a glorious sunrise, while shakers generate an infectious shuffle. Tribastone and his acoustic guitar explore Flamenco landscapes and a four-four kick drums hits against the body while layers of synthesis radiate compelling colorations. Babbling voices ride a serpentine synth sequence and touches of acid bass move in support, with cut-off filters opening as the snare drops, creating a head-nodding and body bopping groove that lifts the spirit towards the sky. The sequential electronics are so effective as they bob and weave through the mix, creating an effortless vibe of beach dance perfection…of hands-in-the-air euphoria and the abandonment of all worry or fear. Additional touches of six string sunshine push the mind every towards the shores of Ibiza and during a breakdown into burning delay feedback, synthesizers filter into solar squelch and guitars drift towards psychedelic delirium. A slow yet anthemic snare roll calls to mind big room trance as it brings the groove back into focus, now with 3D synth snaps firing in the left ear as the ever-present sequence reduces to a calming purr. Tribastone continues letting loose threads of sunshine lysergia and points of synthetic light swell into magnificent globes of blinding incandenscence. And towards the end, an echo-shrouded choir of the sea sings beneath a brief guitar fantasia before it all washes away in a scream of oscillation.
Coyote - Buzzard Country Remixes (Is It Balearic? Recordings, 2021) The Hardway Brothers take “Sun Culture” into ultra-deep territory across two versions on the A-side, with the first being the very aptly named “Balearic Channel Remix”…which is of course a reference to the work of Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald. Underground warehouse kick drums pound beneath hissing space fluids, as a low down Chain Reaction-style groove emerges, though with its eyes locked on a melting sunset panorama. Liquiform chords flow into cold industrial caverns and string synths suffuse the reverberating spaces with splashes of sunshine, while sub bass motions vibrate the soul. Shadowy tracers flit across the sky and DMT vibrato waves squiggle at hyperspeed, yet their effect is blunted and muted. Claustrophobic clouds fade in then out while melodic piano chordstrokes reflect in strange ways off of glowing walls of stone, their effect like gemstones glimmering underwater, yet with their luster sanded away by the march of time. Muted dub chords are caught in crackling delay chains and the deep kicks and jacking bass never relent in their heads down, hands-in-the-air stomp. Snares are reduced to a whisper and shaker patterns cause head-bobbing hypnotism as funky chords bring touches of liquid fusion grooving…only as if proceeding in the middle of a dub techno fever dream. Insectoid chitters move in from all corners of the mix, sawing sirens swirl into screams of feedback, and all the while, drum circle flourishes are shattered into a web echoing delirium.
Next comes Sun Culture “(Hardway Brothers Meet Monkton Uptown),” which sees the bass going even deeper somehow, as growling riddims menace the mind and rattle the ribcage. We soon find ourselves in another subaquatic dub techno dopamine dream, wherein kick, snare and hi-hat lock in for maximal hypnotic effect. Sometimes the bass guitar of Duncan Gray seems to take on a post-punk drug chug edge, and at some point, the rhythms pull away, leaving chopped up voices to decay into the void. Bassline and beats return and streaks of feedback sing softly over everything, while fogs of seafoam move at the outer edges of the stereo field. Clouds of solar static are seen from millions of miles away and traces of flamboyant fuzz guitar are submerged into a pooling vortex of deep dub delirium, emerging stretched out and mutated into currents of neon starshine. Gray's melodic basslines serenade through the underground club grooves, those funky chords return to sing their 70s fusion songs within layers of sighing feedback, and increasingly, the mix is overwhelmed by distorted blasts of drug-induced haze. Abstracted voices filter from one ear to the other…their unintelligible spells of esoteric mystery pushing the mind ever further towards astral activation. And towards the ends, the original tracks Primal Scream-style piano chord structures can just be heard amidst feedback fires, delay detritus, and morphing vocal abstractions.
In the Woolfy vs Projections mix of “Shimmer Dub,” the original track’s hand percussions intermingle with gurgling rhythmic fluids…the effect like wandering upon some tribal jungle ceremonial. Big blasts of downer synth bass are soaked in reverb, repetitive synth pulses tickle the mind, and pillowy arpeggios flow into view while those familiar synthetic steel drums shine in the sunlight. Fingers roll across myriad skins as the kick drum drops away, leaving the mind to swim in a world of equatorial energy. Then, as the bass drum resumes–with shakers never relenting–a new bassline emerges, bringing with it a heavy touch of wiggling squiggling Italo boogie. The vibe is hesitant…anxious even…with a persistent refusal to lock in, and as bass bursts grow in intensity, the rest of the mix begins reverberating into a balearic dreamscape. Following a delirious pause, the track explodes into flamboyant disco funk perfection, as sweltering chord hazes melt from the sky and bouncing basslines join an infectious and tropically tinged body groove. Chords scat, virtual marimbas dance, synthetic steel pans shimmer across the spectrum, and swells of white light synthesis overwhelm the mind...the whole thing as massive a groove as there could possibly be. Touches of electro kiss the rhythms and futuristic synth riffs fire as we back down into a swinging breakbeat, with rapid keyboard riffs locking into heady funk cycles and stadium-sized tom tom fills splaying out across the stereo field. Guitar licks are soaked in sunshine as they lead a dubwise swing, and as we explode once more into the block rocking groove, double time shakers and hats push the vibe towards dance party mania…all as coral-colored leads rush through star ocean fx clouds.
Max Essa’s take on “Ranura de Marihuana” sees a four-four kick smacking with infectious disco dance energy and hand percussion flowing all around. A snare crack introduces another groove indebted to Italo boogie, with big bottomed synth basslines accentuating the vibes of beach dance euphoria. Shakers spread into sandy clouds of atmosphere and heatwave pads sweat and squelch as starlight arppegios race across the sky. The vibe of Ibizan melancholia is here perfected, causing body and soul to merge in hedonistic ecstasy, and though the track resembles one of Essa’s characteristic blue ocean dancefloor cruisers, its a little slower and baggier than usual, which fits completely with Coyote’s zoner stoner vibe. Seascape pianos bring a peaktime fee and at certain moments, the groove momentarily recedes, only to rush back in on an infectious snare crack. Ivory melodies are increasingly strange and psychotropic as they flutter across the mix, with decaying vibration tails carried away on an aqueous breeze. The radiant piano chords and vocalizations from the original swim into the stereo field as Essa barrels down into a heavy bassline stomp, with every pulling away aside from smeared out voices and 70s prog rock pads that evoke a string orchestra tuning to the sounds of the stars. Further clap cracks bring back layers of equatorial euphoria and the vocals are used to incredible effect, with echoing snippets repurposed as anthemic hooks. Pianos continue their alien dance over relaxed disco rhythms and snapping funk basslines, and as we move towards the end, claps and basslines fire rapidly as vocals morph through slapback oscillations…all before dropping into one last expanse of seaside dancefloor magic, with dub disco beats, infectious world percussion rolls, and a pleading voices diffusing towards a gorgeous sunset horizon.
