The Grand Duchess Charlotte, born January 23, 1896 at the Château de Colmar-Berg, was sworn in on January 15, 1919. On September 28 of the same year a referendum was organized in particular on the political form of the Grand Duchy. It then appeared that 77.8% of Luxembourgers voted for the maintenance of the monarchy with the Grand Duchess Charlotte as head of state. On November 6, 1919 in Luxembourg, she married Prince Félix de Bourbon-Parme. Born September 28 at Schwarzau am Steinfelde Castle (Austria), he is the son of Robert I (1848-1907), ex-Duke of Parma, and Princess Antonia of Braganza (1862-1959). From this union were born six children. The Grand Ducal family chose exile during World War II. The Grand Duchess Charlotte, often traveling between Canada and England, had settled permanently in London with her government in 1943. The family returned to the Grand Duchy on April 14, 1945. On April 28, 1961, she appointed her son Jean as lieutenant-representative of the Grand Duchy. He was sworn in on May 4, 1961. Grand Duchess Charlotte abdicated on November 12, 1964, after 45 years of reign. She died on July 9, 1985 at the Château de Fischbach.
