Eu me dou demais para as pessoas. Não é um erro de escrita. Literalmente, eu me dou.

Tinariwen - “Anemouhagh”
Tinariwen, the legendary, Grammy-winning Tuareg collective will release their new album, Amatssou, on May 19th, 2023.
Amatssou by Tinariwen
Amatssou by Tinariwen
Amatssou by Tinariwen
Later this month, Tinariwen will embark on their first US tour since 2019, beginning on May 27th at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music and including stops in Los Angeles, New York and more. A list of full dates are below and tickets are on sale now. For decades, Tinariwen have remained ambassadors for the Tuareg people, a way of life in tune with the natural world, which is under threat as never before. Throughout Amatssou — the legendary collective’s ninth studio album — Tinariwen set out to explore the shared sensibilities between their trademark desert blues and the vibrant country music of rural America. Recorded in Djanet, an oasis in the desert of southern Algeria located in Tassili N’Ajjer National Park, with additional production on two tracks by Daniel Lanois (Brian Eno, U2, Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Peter Gabriel, Willie Nelson), Amatssou finds Tinariwen’s signature snaking guitar lines and hypnotic grooves seamlessly co-existing alongside banjos, fiddles and pedal steel. Though Tuareg culture is as old as that of ancient Greece or Rome, the songs of Amatssou speak to the current and often tough reality of Tuareg life today. Unsurprisingly, there are impassioned references to Mali’s ongoing political and social turmoil. Full of poetic allegory, the lyrics call for unity and freedom. There are songs of struggle and resistance with oblique references to the recent desperate political upheavals in Mali and the increasing power of the Salafists. Tinariwen’s message has never sounded more urgent and compelling than it does on Amatssou.

Family secrets, family trees, and family history in Spellbound
On October 13, Libby Copeland wrote an interesting article in Psychology Today about the interest of Americans in genealogy, saying that it has become a cultural phenomenon and a big business, noting her book on the topic, titled The Lost Family: How DNA Testing Is Upending Who We Are. She noted that for much of U.S. history it has been seen as either "a worthy middle-class endeavor" or something to "divide people into a hierarchy of stations based on race and class," which changed in the later 20th century as the pursuit of family history became broader, with more Americans understanding themselves and their ancestors. Copeland also stated that the desire to look backward is sometimes out of a "sense of rootlessness," storytelling, explanation of family traits, and hoping the past can explain the present, while Black people may be "blocked from knowledge of the past by the paucity of records about their enslaved ancestors." She also stated that currently, we look because of a fear of current circumstances with the COVID pandemic, with Copeland stating that the present is time to ask questions, reckon with our past and that many of us are "faced with profound surprises about ourselves and our families, answers to questions we never even realized we were asking." In this post, I'll explore how this has manifested itself in some of my favorite webcomics, Spellbound, by Rose Luxey, otherwise known as "Ronce."
Reprinted from my Genealogy in Popular Culture WordPress blog. Originally published on March 15, 2021.
It begins in issue 86, aptly titled "Family history." One of the protagonists, Eglantine "Egg," comes to the mess hall alongside her roommate Ninon, asks her friend Faustine about what it means that her family is experimenting with magic, "legally speaking." Faustine explains that her family can be traced to the Great Magic Wars, with her father from one of the leading families. Right after that, we see a family tree, as shown below:
Following this, Faustine explains that her ancestors were part of a family which brought destruction in their quest for more power and realizing her connection to that past, that it is not so distant anymore. The parallel I can think of are White people who have slaveowners as ancestors, who dismiss it as far in the past, even though it is part of their heritage, something which should be acknowledged. Egg is disturbed by this, as shown in the next issue of the webcomic, with Faustine admitting it isn't good to read about terrible things her uncle did in the past, and alter beginning to tell her about the different kinds of magic.
Sadly, this seems to be the only time roots or genealogy come up in the webcomic. However, this doesn't mean the webcomic is bad or anything. Rather, it focused on more important issues, interpersonal conflicts, identity crisis, friendship, love, depression, familial neglect, acceptance, and the like. And all of those issues are interconnected with the roots work that each of use do as genealogists. So, in that way, it comes full circle.

The Event
While picking a lipstick, it is critical to comprehend your appearance, your eye tone and your hair tone. Doing this will help you in picking the ideal shade of lipstick that will suit you the best. Cultural Immersion in Japan
I had the privilege of participating in my second campaign with Tokyo Metropolitan Government. Last May, I documented my Tokyo & Yamagata photo diary for TOHOKUxTokyo. This time, my adventures are centered around cultural experiences in Tokyo.
Daikanyama T-Site
No matter where you go in Japan, you are likely to find someone reading. It is no wonder that Japan is home to what many would crown “The Best Bookstore in the World”. Daikanyama Tsutaya Books is a bookworm wonderland with wooden interiors and ample amounts of sunlight. Tsutaya Books is nested in the middle of architectural masterpiece Daikanyama T-site.
Daikanyama also contains many shops and cafes. The entire area is an ideal place to get lost in a good book. This town is also the most pet-friendly area I have ever visited in Japan. You can see many owners enjoy the establishment with their fur babies. *Kudos to Ginger Maeda for being such a good model.
There is a metro stop at Daikanyama, so getting there is quite simple. Many specialty restaurants, shops, and cafes are situated close to the station (including this yellow espresso van).
Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions
The festival is held annually during the month of February. This year’s dates are February 9-25, 2018. As I was walking around Yebisu Garden Place, I interacted with a red piano that I assumed was native to the mall. Each piano note is the catalyst for dozens of wooden triggers. Later, I found out that the piano is an interactive exhibition for Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions 2018: Mapping the Invisible.
2018 marks the 10th anniversary of this event. The current theme “Mapping the Invisible” is centralized around the power and diversity of video expression. I believe this theme is prevalent in today’s age where anything and everything is documented. Although we may not all be artists, we are all documentarists in our own right. The memories and experiences we capture are building blocks for our lives. The way we choose to document is a reflection of artistic and individual expression.
Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions 2018 was the cultural highlight of my trip. Contemporary art may be a difficult topic to understand, but it is intellectually stimulating. Some pieces are very visually pleasing, including Rafaël Rozendaal’s Into Time 15 05 02 featured above. Each canvas changes colors and morphs shapes at every angle. This colorful piece marks the beginning of the festival. Other short documentaries such as Erkan Özgen’s Wonderland are emotionally impactful. The displays are simultaneously enticing and haunting. You are sure to reflect on the pieces afterward.
As you are navigating your way through the festival, you can obtain stamps at each location. Once you collect 5 stamps, you are rewarded with a “Mapping the Invisible” tote. The facility also hosts a cafe with pastries and a string of restaurants at BRICK END.
Ueno Ameyoko
Ueno’s Ameyoko is the cultural melting pot of Japan. The street highlights a multitude of cuisines from countries all over the world. Bargain clothing, produce stands, and foreign foods can all be found at Ameyoko.
Bonsai Museum
I am always fascinated by the meticulous nature of Japanese culture. The finest details are taken into account when growing bonsai trees. Bonsai is a historic Japanese art form using trees inside containers. Wires alter the direction and growth of branches. Trees are tended daily to ensure longevity. The most expensive bonsai tree at this museum is ¥100,000,000 (which is roughly $950,000). That particular tree has been featured on many television programs worldwide. The bonsai garden is a nice change of pace, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Classes are also offered for those interested in learning about bonsai.
Tea Ceremony
In Japan, traditions of the past very much embedded into the present day. The tea ceremony is a celebrated part of Japanese culture. The tradition can be traced back thousands of years. Originally, the sacred ceremony was only intended for males- women and children were deemed inferior. Tea gatherings were instances when social status became nullified. Whether you were a shogun or a samurai, you were required to remove all armor and embellishments to enter the tea ceremony. Luckily, women are now allowed to participate. Wearing a yukata for the tea ceremony made this experience even more notable.
Hie Shrine
It is almost impossible to visit Japan without walking past a shrine. Even during my time studying abroad, the program emphasized the importance of shrines. I love seeing the juxtaposition of a historical shrine and a skyscraper. I believe that the parallels between old and new are what makes Japan so interesting.
Hie Shrine hosts one of the three great Japanese festivals of Edo. The festival takes place each year on June 15. The shrine is well-known for its purple chrysanthemum crest.
One of my favorite parts of traveling is the opportunity to experience another culture. The acts of integrating into a community, interacting with locals, and immersing yourself in a foreign culture are integral to becoming a well-rounded individual. By understanding other people, we are able to understand ourselves better.
With Japan tourism currently on the uprise (reaching its peak during Tokyo 2020 Olympics), I hope people utilize this time to better understand Japan.
