We’ll NEVER get another RPG like Lunar Silver Star Story Complete :(
I first played this game over 20 years ago on the playstation, and was probably the first RPG I’ve ever played and beaten. At first I think what mesmerized me was its wonderful animation, very telling of the anime style during the 90s But as I go back to this game each and ever year, I am beginning to notice that this may have been the last RPG of its kind.
Granted I understand that this game was essentially a port of the Sega Saturn game, and that game was a remake of the Sega CD version, so it makes sense that this game can have such a classic RPG vibe to it during a time where Japanese RPGs were booming in the market with games like Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9, Star Ocean and Wild Arms. I personally cannot help but shake the thought away, that Sega just had a certain way of crafting their games that gives it such a “SEGA” atmosphere, its hard to properly explain, but I’m straying far from the point haha
You see, during a time where RPGs were taking over the gaming scene and constantly upgrading itself to appeal to a newer generation of gamers, Lunar SSSC on the playstation was an RPG that stuck out not because of its mechanics, story, or even music. I honestly feel it was the art style, every single scene, color, and character just pops out and exudes so much personality that I cannot help but feel captivated in the world, and the very basic scenery like the picture posted above is so wonderful to look at. But despite being such a basic styled RPG, the game sold almost just as well as Final Fantasy 8.
However, this is not to say that being a “basic” styled RPG is a drawback, honestly I think that was its charm. Lunar does not attempt to explore a complex narrative, or engage in exploring themes and the likes. All it is, is about a young boy, yearning for his dream to go on an adventure, fights the bad guy and saves the girl.
The battle system is also classic styled in every sense, each member of the party has a specific “job” that is committed to them. Buff/Heal class Buff/Mage Class Magic class Sword/magic class Sword class Where if utilized correctly can make progression run a lot smoother. In short the battle system itself is the most basic out of most RPGs at the time, enemies were weak to certain elemental spells, sword/blunt attacks, etc... I personally see this as another charm to the series, as it does not require alot of time to figure out how it works, or to the point where it seems completely unfair, much like the battle system in Final Fantasy 8 (sorry not sorry) During the final battle, knowing exactly how to utilize each party members abilities and executing required buffs/nulls definitely makes the battle more engaging. “Farming/Grinding” is synonymous with RPGs, especially at the time. But with Lunar that really isn’t necessary. The game does a great job with having the player level up naturally as the game progresses, to the point where even the final boss, you will be at a proper level to where the fight is at an even playing ground, where a fair amount of struggle will be placed on the player to overcome. Truly making it feel like the final battle of a grand adventure that you are apart of.
And even though I say that this game does not have notorious music like other RPGs, Final Fantasy 7 and 9 come to mind. The music in this game is absolutely splendid, from very classic sounding overworld/battle music, to the beautiful vocals from the opening and other vocals used in game (https://youtu.be/fcacVr-uRjg) I’m not a music expert, so I really can’t say much, just go to the link I posted above and see for yourself LOL
I feel where the game shines the most is within its characters, the game doesn’t divulge itself with complex written characters, but they’re all charming in their own way. From your courageous young boy, to the hot headed tsundere, to the arrogant magician, all the way to the hopeless drunk warrior; The party is filled to the brim with personality, and makes the adventure you embark filled with joy and light hearted comedy here and there at every moment.
Even after laying my thoughts out here, I still can’t figure out what exactly it is that makes me love this game so much as my favorite classic RPG of all time. I go back to this game every year, and it moves me to tears every time I play through it. I truly do consider this a true classic RPG in every sense of the word, I wish I could explain it more but I feel I need to play it again to get my feelings into words haha I was thinking of playing it on stream sometime next week, if you are interested you can find me here - TWITCH: https://www.twitch.tv/LeoVoid I also create YouTube content where I analyze thematic and narrative structures in anime YOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/c/LeoVoid

What to say about one of the top #gamedevelopers of all time#workingdesigns. The quality of their releases are to this date unmatched in my book. Gorgeous looking games, highly lovable caracters and physical release of an exceptional beauty. This is the first entry into one of the most missed companies. I played #lunar series for the first time on the #segacd, sadly without beating either of the games. I was so glad when I found out the they were being released as a remake on the #ps1. There are a few other spin off on other systems but these two here are the real thing. Don't waste your time on the others. So, have you played any of these? What are your thoughts? #lunarsilverstarstorycomplete #lunarthesilverstar #lunareternalbluecomplete #lunareternalblue

Lunar: The Silver Star (Video Game) - TV Tropes
The more I think about it the more I realise that no ancient civilization would be at all interested in taming dragons.
Dragons are carnivores, so they’re really inefficient and costly to feed. They’re solitary, so its really frigging hard to form any kind of relationship with them. They’re darn right dangerous, so why risk your life taming one when there’s loads of llamas in the world. And worst of all their life spans are insanely long; if you had an opportunity to breed one, you wouldn’t live long enough to see the fruit of your labour mature, so you wouldn’t even bother.

Off day today, and after running errands, I fired up the #vita and the ol #PS3 to play some classics! I have such fond memories of playing #lunarsilverstarstorycomplete the summer I graduated high school. That was the #workingdesigns rerelease for the #psx It led me to be a big fan of the series. I devoured #eternalbluecomplete when it came out, then went back to play the #segacd versions. This version, #silverstarharmony for the #psp is a great port, though j do miss the WD script. #steinsgate is a classic visual novel and one I highly recommend. I first played it on PC and Ive been wanting to replay it. I almost bought it on #switch but remembered I got a copy from #psplus a while back. It was a good evening with some old games ✌️ #playstation #sony #psvita #playstation3 #lunar #lunarsilverstarharmony #steinsgate #classics #gaming
