Very messy n quick thing to overview the two main types of mer in my au. Socially they are very similar and can share pods with one another, but have plenty of defining features. Coastal (solar) mers: Sleeker and Shark-like with sharp features, little to no bioluminescence, ray like head fins, and warm colors. They prefer the shallower waters and are pursuit predators. Trench (lunar) mers: Rounder and Whale-like (but think more orca than like blue n such), bright bioluminescent marks, glowing lures on their head/tail, and cool colors. They prefer deeper waters, notably trenches, and while they can pursue prey the tactic of using their lures/markings for hunting is unique to them. Hybrids will mix and match these features. Eclipse is built like a trench mer with the glowing stripes, but with the warm colors and rays of coastal mers. Even his pups who lean more towards trench mer have colors that come from being hybrids even if they could be brushed off (the bloodtwins being primarily red and Lunar's yellow spots)
