about pidge and allura
Tumblr media
okay, first off, not to overuse the baby crush subplot, but pidge would’ve developed at least a tiny crush on allura if they didn’t have such a turbulent relationship. she looks pretty and sounds fancy
focusing more on the main canon, though, there’s two big reasons why pidge dislikes allura. 1.) she’s an authority figure and 2.) she assumes connection
re: allura being an authority figure. after the garrison covered up her family’s abduction, pidge began to associate authority figures with conspiracy. when allura introduces herself as princess, and then tries to apply that sovereignty to the team, pidge immediately assumes her to a conspirator. someway, somehow, allura is trying to wrong her
regular, old teen rebellion plays a factor in this, too, though, if only because allura is most definitely not her mom
re: allura assuming connection. pidge is in deep, deep denial about her family’s mortality. even though she knows space is an ever-crushing vacuum, she’s sure that they can find a way through it. even though she learns about the brutality of the galra empire firsthand, she’s sure that they can tough it out. allura, on the other hand, has had to accept the death of her people—most notably her father. she is in the mourning phase, and pidge wants nothing to do with it, because her family’s not dead. for her, to commiserate with allura about the loss of their fathers—even with the distinction between temporary loss and eternal loss—is the same as accepting the garrison’s lies that her family is dead
another big disconnect between them is that pidge just doesn’t comprehend the tremendous tragedies allura has suffered. when you put it on paper, pidge has experienced some rough things: having her family abducted, having her government cover up their disappearance, having to stall her search for them to fight an intergalactic war. however, in comparison to allura having both her people killed off and planet destroyed (not to mention personally getting displaced by 10,000 years), pidge is more or less a lost kid
despite still very much having her people and planet (As well as getting to stay in her own timeline), pidge considers herself one of the most wronged people in the universe
which, comparatively speaking, is ridiculous, but again, it’s a matter of comprehension. because pidge is aware that these horrible things have happened to allura, but pidge neither has any frame of reference to better understand the weight of those tragedies nor any motive to try to liken herself to allura
pidge and allura are in the position to bond—like a lot. pidge hates this for all of the reasons above, though, and tends to tear down any bridges allura tries to build
granted, pidge doesn’t hate allura herself, since pidge will apologize for any especially vicious grievances—like that crack she made about still having a living father. however, pidge will also run away from these moments the second she spits out of her rushed apology, because while she doesn’t want to be cruel, she still doesn’t want to be close
of course, there’s also the matter of them being the only girls on the team, but honestly, this is something pidge wouldn’t really care about until she has hair trouble (especially with this in play). lance likes cosmetics, and shiro tends to be a mother hen, so pidge wouldn’t really seek allura as a source of femininity—especially with pidge only being so feminine herself. she just knows that allura has a lot of hair to deal with, so maybe she’s willing to spare a few hair clips
overall, pidge dislikes allura not because of any personal character flaw, but the authority and loss that she represents
