Of Guitars & Songwriting with Young Kapampangan Musicians Shane and Shena Lumanog
In Pampanga, there's been one name in acoustic guitars and it's Lumanog. They're hand-made in San Anton, Guagua. It seems like a natural progression then for two members of the family to take on the work of writing and performing new Kapampangan music.

In this interview, we discuss the make and the making of music with young Kapampangan artists Shane and Shena Lumanog.
1. How old are you each of you and where in Pampanga are you from?
SHANE:  27 SHENA: 22, we're both from Angeles City
2. I know your family makes and sells guitars but what got you into actually creating music with guitars?
SHANE:  We love music, ever since we can remember, we would always listen to our dad whenever he would play the guitar and sing songs from The Beatles and Neil Young when we were kids.
But as I got older it became a therapy for me, an outlet where I can express myself through singing and composing songs.
SHENA: For me, it's all about what you grew up to: the music, the inspirations and the people who were there while you were growing up. I grew up with a dad who loves playing guitar and singing on his spare time. I grew up with an older sister who was already writing her own songs. So, I think that's really what got me into music.
Also, guitar was the only instrument that we have back then. I think for me, with creating our own music, we sort of like make use of what we have and create from there.
3. Who are your influences in terms of both playing guitar and singing?
SHANE: The Beatles - Paul and Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Alanis Morissette, Brandon Boyd, Lacey Sturm, Amy Winehouse
SHENA: Brooke Fraser, Damien Rice, Reese Lansangan, Clara Benin and Willow Smith
4. Tell us about your guitars and what specific sounds you each like to use them for.
SHANE:  I love Shena's langka guitar, until now. Mabilug ya bosis, malambut ya pasada, ampong syempre gawa yang Lumanog. Pero buri ke rin itang kanaku, itang regalu na ning tatang ku, handy ya kasi it's a 3/4 sized guitar, malabut ya din pasada. Also, it suits my height! Haha
SHENA: Yep, masanting ya pin itang Langka ku a gitara. It's been with me since 2008, regalu neng tatang ku kanaku anyang second year high school ku. Mabilug ya pin bosis, which I really like kesa karetang balamu matarling a tunug tsaka anjang ninung mandam or gumamit kanita sasabyan da malambut ya keng gamat haha!
5. What is the song "Misanmetung" about?
SHENA: “Misanmetung” is a love song. A thought came into mind lang when I heard Reese Lansangan's song "Home" that was used in a wedding video of a celebrity. Bakit walang Kapampangan song or love song na ginagamit for weddings here? So, I thought why not write something na mejo modern ung tunog pero Kapampangan na even I would want to use it someday in my own wedding video. And just this year, I'm going to play it for the first time at a wedding that I was invited to play for because of that song. My heart is happy hehe.
6. You're genre is primarily acoustic and you collaborated with Headroom and his synth pop music. What was that like?

Listen to Better Than That ft. Shane & Shena Lumanog here.
SHANE: I love it! It was fun to do something unusual. We always want to do songs or stuff that is out of our comfort zone. And we also listen to some snythpop/pop artists so we were excited about it. SHENA: It's definitely new and out of our comfort zone; challenging but exciting at the same time. Hein is a very talented artist and we're lucky enough to be able to collaborate with him. We hope for more collaborations with him and with other talented Kapampangan artists too!
7. Any new projects, gigs, social media pages, new releases we should look out for?
