Catching Smoke
Part 2 - where your escape is made impossible by an upcoming execution and commander Smoker is giving his best effort to make you feel safe
As the door to Smoker's office closed behind you, you couldn't help but smirk to yourself. You had won the first round in this battle of wills with the imposing Marine commander. You knew it wouldn't be the last, but for now, you relished in the small victory.
Tashigi led you to your modest quarters within the Marine base. The room was spartan, to say the least, with just a simple bed, a small desk and a chair. Just what was to be expected in a military environment. You would have to make do, although you missed the sunny's luxurious commodities already. And Sanji's cooking.
"I hope this will be sufficient for you" Tashigi said, her voice carrying a tone of genuine concern.
"It's more than enough," you replied with a reassuring smile. "Thank you, Captain."
"Don't forget to attend breakfast at 0700 tomorrow morning," She nodded and left you to settle in. You needed to gather your thoughts and start planning your next moves. The news about Ace's execution weighed heavily on your mind. You had to tell Luffy, help him somehow.
Your first night in the marine base was full of uncertainty and fears - but also excitement about what was to come. If you could pull this off, you could return to your friends with lots of useful information. About the marine's secrets, technology and tricks.
Sleep didn't come easy in the uncomfortable marine bed and you were only able to find rest after turning and tossing for what felt like hours. An unsettling dream got hold of you, where you got chased, but you couldn't get away. There was a menacing mist, always just mere inches behind you, threatening to swallow you whole.
Groaning, you woke up. Joints aching and cracking, you peeled out of bed, feeling battered. It was far too early - but you had to get ready for breakfast and your second day at the base. Tashigi was so kind to lend you some of her clothing, just until you could buy new ones. You explained your lack of lugagge with the unreliable transport to the base, which she accepted without any further questions.
Wearing one of her pink shirts with a colorful print and white marine uniform pants, you headed out. The base was massive, a labyrinth. The small map you got handed was hard to read, so you arrived a bit late at the mess hall, where waves of grumpy soldiers munched on their rations.
You grabbed a tray of unappetizing food and scanned the room for Tashigi. She had been the most friendly person so far here, a ray of sunshine in this wretched place.
As you looked around, you spotted a familiar figure sitting alone at a corner table. It was Smoker, his two cigars smoldering as he stared into a cup of coffee. His muscular frame and stern expression made him an imposing presence even in a room full of Marines.
He had already seen you and nodded to acknoledge your presence. Not exactly your favourite breakfast company, but it wouldn't hurt to establish a rapport with him.
You walked over to Smoker's table and cleared your throat. "Commander Smoker, mind if I join you for breakfast?"
He looked up, his brown eyes locking into yours for a moment before he grunted in response and gestured to the empty chair across from him.
Taking a seat, you began to pick at your food: bland porridge, and black tea. "Long night, Commander?"
He took a sip of his coffee, his expression unreadable. "Yes, I've been catching up after you so kindly sorted out the memos for me" he said flatly.
You decided to take the opportunity to establish a friendlier tone with him. "I can't even begin to imagine the stress you must be under, chasing after pirates and all."
Smoker's gaze hardened, and he leaned forward, his voice low and serious. "This isn't just about chasing pirates. It's about justice and maintaining order in this world. To protect the people of this world from violence."
You nodded, trying to hide the fear. From what your crewmates told you, he was merciless against pirates and a tough opponent. You should never forget who you're dealing with here. "Of course, Commander."
Silence hung in the air for a moment before Smoker spoke again. "You've been doing a decent job in only the few hours you were here, Miss Y/n. I was sceptical when I heard that we're bringing in civilians for the job now, but you've surprised me."
You forced a smile. "As long as I am here, I plan to assist you in any way I can, Commander."
He grunted in acknowledgment, but couldn't hide the smile playing around his lips. "I would like to reinforce my offer for the position. I'll await your answer when I come back from the execution."
Your heart skipped a beat. The execution. You didn't know where Luffy was, you probably couldn't do anything from here to help Ace. Even if you stopped Smoker, hundreds of decorated and dangerous Marines will be present.
Smoker's brow furrowed as he continued. "This base has been lacking proper administrative support for a while now. If you decide to stay, it could help ease some of the burdens on me and Tashigi."
You weighed your options carefully. Staying on as Smoker's secretary would grant you continued access to valuable information, but it would also tie you more closely to the Marines. However, it might be the best way to protect your crewmates until you found out where they landed.
"I appreciate your offer, Commander Smoker," you replied diplomatically. "I'll give it some serious thought."
He nodded, seemingly satisfied with your response. "Good."
Silence resumed. He seemed comfortable just staring into nothing while he ate, but there was one more burning question on your mind:
"Uhm, Commander?"
"Yes, Miss?" he looked at you again.
"Where did you get that coffee? It smells good" you asked, giving in to your cravings. It didn't exactly smell delicious, but way better than stale tea.
"Oh that one? You need to ask directly to get some, it's only for higher officers. Out here, it's rationed. Stay here" he gestured for you to stay put, "I will get you some." He already moved towards the kitchen with long strides.
You waited and ate some of the porridge. Would it kill them to put something on there? Maybe some cinnamon or apples? You let the thick mass glide from your spoon back into the bowl, where it landed with a wet sound.
"Well, well, Dove, so pretty!" a smeary voice announced behind you. It was asshole-soldier from yesterday. Fuck. You looked around nervously for either Tashigi or Smoker.
"Sitting so alone? Let me help you with that" he sat down right next to you and put his arm around the backrest of your chair.
"I feel like I've seen you before? Maybe you are a pretty little pirate?" he studied your face closely as you tried not to give anything away through your expressions.
"Piss off, Soldier" you said loudly, much to the amusement of the surrounding Marines, who now turned to look at the early morning entertainment.
"This is a real marine base, for real men. Little miss secretary doesn't have any business here" the grimy one next to you said. You wanted to get up, but his arm pressed down on your shoulders.
You were outnumbered and unarmed, marine soldiers from all around got up and watched, but they unmistakebly formed a wall around you. No escape.
"We don't need no paper pusher here" one said, approaching your table.
He didn't get far though - it looked like he got stuck in something. Confused, he looked down at his feet and saw with horror the smoke gathering around his legs.
"Anything else to say, soldier?" Behind him, Smoker's towering silouette could be seen in the smoke that had built up behind the soldier.
"SIR, NO, SIR" the man suddenly saluted and stood at attention, shaking from head to toe.
"And you? I can't remember inviting you to sit at my table" He glared at the soldier next to you.
"I didn't know that this was your table, commander" He jumped up from the chair and stood very straight. "Sir, I am very sorry!"
"You two are an embarrassment for this base" Smoker's voice thundered through the whole mess hall.
For the first time, you saw his body turn into smoke from close range. His arms dematerialized and his hands shot to grab each of the officers that threatened you. He lifted them both up by their collars with ease and proclaimed, for everyone present to hear: "No one is to threaten, harm or otherwise inconvenience Miss Y/n. In fact, if anything ever happened to her, no matter what, I will punish this whole base. Is that understood?"
All the soldiers that were present saluted and confirmed his order.
"You two just lost your place at the execution. It's one week in the Brigg for each of you for this." He slammed the struggling men to the floor and they scuttled away.
Smoker sighed and sat down. The smoke receded and just his hand came flying back and put a cup of coffee on the table in friont of you. Chatter resumed, everything seemed completely normal again.
"I apologise, they shouldn't have....they are mostly good men, but rough. It will not happen again, I'll personally see to it" he looked very, very concerned that the position of his secretary will not be filled after all. But he also seemed to try his best to make you feel safe, which felt reassuring.
You tasted the coffee. It was without a doubt burned and had been cooking for a few hours, but it was comforting and hot nonetheless. Smoker also occupied himself with his cup.
"On second thought, you should come with us. It will give you the opportunity to get to know the great marine Ford!" He forced a smile to advertise the idea. Maybe he didn't trust his men quite so much after all.
It was just as well. Whatever happened there, you could only do something about it if you where present.
"Very well. It's not like I have to pack a lot." You saw his shoulders relax in relief.
"Perfect. We leave in one hour."
-----
The ship was huge, crowded and just as cold and uncomfortable as the base. So many people, so many resources.
It was hard to fight the feeling that you could be busted at any second. You looked around the marine ship: soldiers worked to steer the ship, clean the deck or seemed otherwise occupied with carrying crates or hurrying somewhere inside. You looked behind you: marine Captain Tashigi and Base commander Smoker sat at a small table behind you, drinking tea, watching their subordinates do their work. A transponder snail was on the table, ready to report any news that might come up.
Smoker
You turned again and looked out at the sea, endless blue water.
He was on edge, not only did he almost miss a summon, he also had to maneuver a civilian's special needs. A civilian he needed.
Normally, he didn't bother with the feelings of his subordinates. Or his higher-ups, for that matter. But now he had to get this woman to stay at his base by any means necessarily. So, he made a real effort to make her comfortable.
Let's see, he thought. She's about as old as Tashigi and a girl like Tashigi. So he probably shouldn't scream at her or she'll cry. He also guessed that as a civilian who has never served, he should not bark orders at her or call her names if she messed up.
He breathed out smoke from his cigars as he studied her form. She was leaning on the reiling, looking out at the open water.
What was he thinking about again? He was lost for a moment, staring at her generous ass and her arched back. Usually, he didn't care about women. He didn't think that Tashigi was cute, like his men, or that Hina was a sexbomb. Something about her was different though...
Focus, man! He told himself. He should empathise with her. What could she be feeling? Maybe she was worried. Or scared. But she didn't let much of it on, which showed him that she found strength and resolve in herself. But just in case, he should socialelize with her. Make her feel welcome and protected.
He nodded to himself, he was proud of his plan and he would get on its completion right now.
"Are you alright, Miss?" He asked, standing next to her.
"Yes of course!" She looked startled, but showed him a smile right away. Smoker may not be an expert with women, but he saw that she looked anxious.
"Not to worry, miss! Whatever happens, I want you to know that you have my full support and protection." In an effort to be reassuring, he put his hand on her shoulder.
"Thank you, commander. I appreciate it." The smile she gifted him with made him turn a little soft inside. He really missed to be with the people he was protecting. If he was honest with himself, he missed Logue Town. He needed to be reminded now and than who he fought for. The civilians whose lives he protected and for whom he strived for order and justice. Even though he would never let it on - their gratefulness had fueled him.
No one would harm a hair on her body as long as he could help it.
"Sit with us" his outstretched arm indicated the empty chair at his table.
She sat down and with a nod to Tashigi. Smoker turned his attention back to the tea on the small table. He poured a cup for Y/n and another for himself.
Smoker was exceptionally proud of himself, this went great. He would enact the next step of his plan.
"Me and Tashigi will have dinner at 1800 in the captains mess. You are welcome to join us." He monitored her reaction closely.
"I..uhm...of course, I'll be there." She shyly looked away, but he could see her smile.
It would take two more days to get to the fort, plenty of time to secure her cooperation.
------
Next week, we'll be at the marine Ford battle, even if we're just an onlooker.
A small chapter with the first bonding experiences!
What, marineford was known to become a war but Smoker takes her along anyways? They evacuated all civilians from the island you say? Well, he's not thinking that far and also I didn't want y/n to be left behind, that would have been less dramatic. So let's all decide that it isn't pretty careless from him. Besides, I already wrote that part before I happened to see the bit where they say that.

what is yan!stepmother’s reaction to reader packing all their stuff to move out the house
This is a yandere work of fiction if you don't enjoy the kind of things associated with the genre i'd highly recommend skipping this.
She'd be confused and then shocked thinking your playing a joke on her, that's until you actually try to leave then all hell would break loose.
Your lugagge has been forced open all the contents thrown on the floor her blocking your way out with her body while she's on the phone with your father if you still try to leave even after speaking with your father she'd start getting a little more physical.
She wouldn't hurt you but she would start holding you back, put her hand out to stop you from getting close to any windows or door and follow right behind you if you tried to walk away and if you went into your room she'd use her body to block your room door while talking to you
"Where would you go? You're 15." "You don't have a job or any money how are you gonna get by when you can't even afford to get a meal." "You wouldnt last a night out there without me or your father." Etc
She wouldn't stop breaking you down until you finally decided to give up on your little "tantrum" or until your father got home so doing this wouldn't be the best idea.
So when you wake up in the morning don't be surprised by the new camera detections, movement activated lights, or that new automated doorbell even new deadbolts installed into the doors, your device will also have a tracker in it.
If you're 18 though things would be different she'd use guilt-tripping methods, talk to the point of wearing you out and attempt to make you see her side, If that fails.
She will be adamant to see who you might move in with, where you're gonna live, if its up to date, etc but if she does try to convince you while your father is there he'll jump in telling her to leave you alone already but expect guilt-tripping and manipulation to be her main choices.

OOC / SiM LiVE REPORT with @hazukixlynch
I wanted to write down our little adventure, incl. pics and setlists! Berlin
The entrance was okay and the staff guy very nice and funny. It looked liked someone from VIP was missing (they scanned us) and was walking around like "Justin?" and someone behind us asked "Justin Biber?" and we ended up laughing. Unfortunately, we have no info if Justin arrived... However, the VIP entrance was delayed without real info. Also, what I personally I found disappointing, there was something written for VIP "as ‘exclusive merch’". It was a keychain…
However, once inside we lined up and the nice stuff guy explained that the pics were made while handover the LPs and asked if we had any further questions. As both of us were shy, we asked for group pic and it was fine! He also said that MAH is "a bit" sick, but will be brave. When we were allowed to go I fooled myself as hell with handing over gifts. We had 4 little bags with german and finnish sweets inside, @hazukixlynch made selfmade bats and added a moomin plushy. Also, we haded over a world scratch map and wrote "world takeover" on it. Anyway, I ended up in pure chaos cause I wanted to get out everything super quick out of the bag. So I really registered nothing and didn't even greeted the band... I was so lost and confused and.... AAAAH! However, they really appreciated it and we were the only ones (beside one other persons) who had gifts. I ended up next to MAH (THEY ARE ALL SO SMOL!!! THEY LOOK WAY TALLER!!!) and he placed his hand on back ♥ The little panda on pic is my mascot Izumi-chan! He was allowed to join.
After that we shopped some merch (a shirt and stickers) and we met a nice guy and chatted a bit. He was already at the venue and said that upstairs is a little balcony. We ended up there, straight to the stage. The fans rocked the show and gave more than 100%. The band asked for stagedive, wall of death, moshpit etc. and the people just did as hell. Setlist was amazing as well! SETLIST KiSS OF DEATH BBT UNDER THE TREE TxHxC Blah Blah Blah EXiSTENCE KiLLiNG ME GUNSHOTS BASEBALL BAT Devil in Your Heart RED The Rumbling
Encore: DO THE DANCE f.a.i.t.h
They had also a support act called Frozemode, which was okay and really fun!
Before the show started they played some background music. Also, Electric Callboy with We got the moves. When it was time for repeat, we all joined the song and right before the "DÖP DÖDÖDÖ DÖP" they stopped the song and entered the stage. FOr a second I got mad, but hey... SiM are the only ones who are allowed to stop EC's right before the main part. During one MC MAH said something about ‘we don't deserve to be EC's support act’. I just screamed "you fucking did". Cause honestly, they do.
Itself, back to MAH's sickness, his voice was very scratched but he gave everything as always, incl. very… good hip swings. Honestly... sir... just stop.
Hamburg
Next morning was pure chaos. Germans will feel me. All trains got cancelled, so I ended up in panic bla. Luckly we got a bus and within 1 hour we left the house. We arrived and went to the hotel for lugagge take off first, then searched for some kebab. And... what can I say? Hamburg kebab is not as good as Berlin one. Then it started to rain and we walked around, checking the venue and found the bus by accident. As we only needed a couple of minutes to the venue, we arrived just before 5pm as VIP entrance said. Nobody was there, so I asked staff if we were right. It started to rain as fuck... Only about 12 people for VIP arrived in the end. After the scanning thing we were told that the opening for us won't be before 18.20... thanks for nothing.
I mean... we had really nice people around to chat with. But it was raining, cold as fuck and we waited fucking 1 1/2h outside for nothing. At the merch again I dared to tell the nice staff guy that he and everyone else is doing an amazing job and he really appreciated it! SUPPORT THE STAFF!!!
Once in, we tried to warm up ourself. This time @hazukixlynch and I dared to ask for a single pic. And I managed to say "Hello" at least. I also asked MAH to hold Izumi. He asked if it's for him and wanted to keep! When I told him that my wife would kill me, he looked confused for a second.
After thinking for a while we decided to go for first row instead of balcony. We choosed Sin's side. There would be also space right infront of MAH, but... from side you can better see certain... body parts. Do not blame me.
This time they didn't cut Electric Callboy before the show started. One of the vocals from the opening act dropped his mic right infront of me by accident and I tried to catch, even if it was too far anyway... I tried. The fans were really easy going and it was not crowded, pressuring etc. but the atmosphere in Berlin was better. The setlist was awesome and we headbanged a lot with girls next to us.
During a MC MAH asked something and we teached him "LOS GEHTS!", which means "Let's go!!!" He also announced festivals like Rock am Ring are possible and we should write tones of mails to them. I screamed ‘TAKE MY MONEY, he laughed. Lady next to me ‘TAKE EVERYTHING FROM ME’. More laughing.
SETLIST KiSS OF DEATH BBT UNDER THE TREE TxHxC MAKE ME DEAD! Blah Blah Blah KiLLiNG ME Amy BASEBALL BAT Devil In Your Heart RED The Rumbling Encore DO THE DANCE f.a.i.t.h At the end of the show we were so damn lucky. I got the setlist and @hazukixlynch got a pic from SIN! It was handed over by staff, but nevermind. When we babbled a bit, she found even another one!!! And I completly lost it cause I never get anything from lives.
Bonus hotel story: someone knocked in the middle of the night. We woke up because we thought it was our door, but it was probably someone looking for their friends. AND... on way back the flights and trains had delay again. So... long story short: we started with delay and ended with it. I bet it was just because @hazukixlynch wanted to have the full german experience.

That photo is so interesting. Do the WDCs really have to drag the trophies with them back and forth from the galas?
I always figured before the gala someone from the FIA would go to Monaco, pick it up from Max to get it engraved ahead of time and then Max would just get it back at the gala. Did Max really bring it himself to Baku?
And on that thought, where does Max get his replica? Do they just ship it to him?
No, I doubt he had to bring anything to Baku himself. It's just what I was envisioning seeing Max with the carry-on lugagge in that picture. And yeah, I forgot they get a replica, rather than just another name added to the same one.
When there was talk earlier this year about handing out the trophy at the race where the WDC is secured, Max commented that he was fine getting it at the awards gala and mentioned the 2 replicas he already has:
(Source: Motorsport.com)
Not sure whether he received the one he gets to keep at the gala. Apparently, it takes 12 weeks to make one. Although they had plenty of time to get this one ready, considering the number of races won by Max this year. I would think he received the replica he gets to keep at the gala, and I'd like to think they'd ship it to him, but he may have been given the option to take it home himself, since he probably flew over in his own plane. All speculation on my part - I honestly haven't looked into it this deeply.

Happy to help!
Today's shift is a memorable one for me. I was at the kiosk waiting for passengers to come in to check-in when Thomas came and asked us students if anyone of us knows how to speak in Tagalog. I then raised my hand cause I am the only filipino on that shift.
He asked for my help to talk to the old lady on a wheelchair in the assistance line. The lady seemed very hard to understand because of her age and also she is I think suffering from a condition somewhat like schizophrenia. At first, Thomas is asking for her old passport just to verify her identification aside from her new passport. She told me that she already shredded her old passport because she have a new one. So I asked if she has any identification card or birth certificate in her bag. She said she have it so then she gave me the permission to open her bag. Until I found that she still have her old passport with her which she told awhile ago that she already shredded. I totally understand that things and statements like this might happen especially if the passenger is on their grey years. they might potentially forget things which is out of their control.
After that, Thomas asked me to stay a bit longer since the old lady does not have the e-travel. (E-travel is a form that needs to be answered online from passengers who will be travelling to Philippines). The old lady gave me the permission to hold her phone and scan the e-travel form. I asked her personal details but she does not have any email. Since the old lady does not have any companion, Thomas asked her if there is anyone that we can contact to help us answer the e-travel form. She gave us the phone number of her grest grand niece and Thomas asked the details he needed to finish the e-travel.
Few minutes after, we successfully registered her for the e-travel. Now it's time for her to check-in. The thing is that, she only paid for the bag fee from Sault St. Marie to Toronto for 2 luggages but her Toronto to Hongkong - Hongkong to Manila is just booked for economy light which means, she can only bring 1 pc of 23kg luggage with her. The lady keeps on insisting that she paid 3,000cad for the whole trip. We called her great grand niece and asked her if she can help her great grand mom to pay for the other luggage. She seemed off because she told to me and Thomas that she will not help because her great grand mom has money.
On that point, I felt very sad for the old lady. She opened her wallet and showed me that she only have few money with her. One lugggge from Toronto to Manila costs 285 cad. The thing is that, she needs to check in again from Manila to Bacolod which is her final destination with Philippine Airlines and we are not sure if she still needs to pay for one extra luggage.
This is the time that I became emotional.. but I didnt show it to the old lady. I talked to Thomas and I said I will just pay for the other luggage of the old lady. Thomas said No for some reason that he explained which I understand. I just really feel bad for her because we've been there dealing with it for around 40 - 50 mins.
Boris came and asked for my help to translate his explanation on why she needs to pay for another luggage. The old lady got nothing to do but pay the 285 cad with her own last money. I really feel bad because I am thinking if she needs to still pay for her lugagge with her connecting flight with Philippine Airlines she does not have any money anymore.
I am just emotional when it comes to seniors. Eventually, the old lady keeps on saying Thank you. Thomas told her, "don't thank me.. Thank her (pointing me) because she helped you a lot. (with a smiling face)". 😊

I am at Disney. So far it has been lackluster, but also:
- Got stared at for applying sunscreen in a line at the Magic Kingdom's dwarves ride. The waiting time was 90 minutes under the sun.
- Got stared at for applying sunscreen when I was in front of the bathroom mirror.
- Dads shamelessly looked at my chest with their wives and kids by their sides.
- I might have been the only pale brunette in some lines, with natural and clean hair.
- Somehow latinos looked weird at me when I start speaking in Spanish after speaking in English.
- Your meds are weird. Acetaminophen is paracetamol and 325mg is a tween's dose. Aleve is 220mg? not even half of the naproxen 550mg that I have on my lugagge, Ibuprofen 200mg? A joke, it's 400mg or 600mg. No wonder you have an opiod crisis.
In short, I am not culturally white. I shower too much, fear cancer and even if I may pass I somehow stick out.

What is your opinion on the upcoming Harry Potter reboot, I have always been curious about the other magic schools, maybe they will show special episodes with kids having adventures in other school
I daydream a lot about magical schools , not only from Harry Potter. Maybe one day I get to write mu own books and fullfill our need of magical schools stories
About the reboot, it could be nothing, it could be everything.
I didn't believe it for a while, since every year they spread the rumour of a new harry potter tv series.
I'll wait til it comes out to decide whether I want to try it or not.
With His dark materials, BBC and HBO made a point to differenciate themselves from the Golden compass (which sadly made the show look honestly much less magical and otherwordly)
and a point to stay the same? ...like the color palette of Lyra's first outfit
They stayed much more faithful to the books in many ways, but also departed from them in others.
I suspect they will do the same with Harry Potter. Stick book to passages that were scraped out of the movies, and completely invent things out of thin air.
Something I always resented to not be in the movie was Fred and George helping Harry to carry his heavy lugagge and then Harry spying on the Weasleys while they say their goodbyes as a family. It was so wholesome.
...but I no longer know whether I want to see it traslated to screen anymore ...I don't kniw if I care about any more Harry Potter content. I still love Harry Potter, but it' so messy... Even if HBO gets to fix the plot holes and the anachronisms, I mean, I could just as well in my head, and I probably would like my version better
#for example thebwizarding world would not wear tunics just because rowling thought both men a women did in late 1600s#neither did actually#besides aren't there any wizard fashion designer?#ever in history?#like why do harry potter wizards lack so poorlynof imagination?#harry potter#anon#ask
