Now, wasn't this a situation. The Castle That Never Was had been uncharacteristically quiet as of late—most of the more excitable and/or sociable members had been sent away, and Luxord had yet to adapt to their absence. Missions themselves had gotten more intense, with those left behind made to pick up the slack... but there were still the evenings and the downtime they brought with them.

Luxord was so bored without the sort of poker league that he'd set up a game of solitaire for himself he was slowly chipping away at without any of his usual engagement. The sound of footsteps entering The Grey Area drew his attention, piercing blue eyes lifting to level on Roxas. They hadn't talked much since the crew had shipped out, but then again no one had spoken much save for what work demanded.

"Care for a game?" he asked, the casual, friendly tone in his voice belying the somberness within. "I'm afraid solitaire has already worn out its welcome." To emphasize his point, he swept the cards from the table into his hands to begin to shuffle with deft, practiced movements, even without an answer. "Things have gotten quite dry around here. Wouldn't you agree?"

did you design Starcatcher with bleeding-heart doves in mind? the heart on her chest reminds me of them

Yes indeed! I base all my Pegasus and alicorns off birds that are thematically relevant. For starcatcher, I couldn't figure out something that matched with her color off the top of my head, so i asked local bird enthusiast @silksinging for help. We went back and forth suggesting things that either matched thematically (indigo bunting > flycatcher) or colorwise (budgie > victoria crown dove) we agreed dove was a good choice, but Soli wanted a tropical species since starcatcher lives on a tropical island. Blue ground dove was too plain, pink headed fruit dove was too green. But then soli was like Bleeding heart ludor. and it was PERFECT because the colors could reinterpreted in Starcatcher colors, and the bleeding heart is so good for this hopeless romantic who keeps granting her crush's wishes to the sky

her wings are also based on the gradient of peach to gray, with the bright blue chosen based on starcatcher's toy.

screaming crying shitting I have so many thoughts about what quadratum luxord and demyx would be like but nobody to share them with. I do not like ludor as a name but every single other name he could have is even stupider (dr lou????) so that's what we get. on the other hand I am an edym truther till I die but I'm on the fence about this design for him; idk it doesn't look flamboyant enough, but maybe I'll take a stab at it another time

this is half theorizing for their roles in kh4 and half fanfic atp. or at least it started off as me theorizing, and I got so into it that it kinda devolved into an au fanfic type thing. I actually would really like to write a whole fanfic involving luxord (or. or ludor) and luxu, I sort of have an outline thing for it written out (its called masters' gambit) but I am afraid of committing to writing things so like don't quote me on that. really all that matters to me, canon or not, is luxord being a dad type character because I will die on this hill forever, and demyx being one of his annoying adopted sons he picked up out of a gutter on the street

anyways the text reads as follows:

"Ludor The Alfred to Yozora's batman. He practically raised Yozora from the age of 8 onwards, seeing as Yozora's father is not often present. He comes from a very unstable background, and as such he has a tendency to be protective of every wayward teen he comes across. He is also known for being incredibly posh and well-spoken as well as for appreciating the finer things in life. What if Luxord was Keykiid's apprentice? I believe this because they both use cards (in Chi, before the medals, cards were used) they both use darkness and light, in addition to ludor, one of the possible names of Luxord's somebody, which means playing, what do you think?

it's an interesting theory! i've been thinking of the possibility that player themself could be luxord (though it's a bit of a stretch since we don't know what the exact rules for reincarnation are yet), but apprentice seems plausible too — especially since in the jp dialogue for the final dark road cutscene, xehanort calls player "master" (not necessarily indicative of them having apprentices, but interesting to note either way)

related to their similarities, i also keep thinking about that kh3 remind scene between luxord and xigbar, specifically where luxord says, "yes, that's what i've always done. i followed the orders from above without question." obviously this could just as easily be me picking out coincidences and making connections where there aren't any, but i have to admit that it just makes me think of player's line in the clock tower when they confronted their foreteller: "i've done everything that was expected of me without a second thought."

which also reminds me of luxord saying "the game isn't over until it's over" in the caribbean, which seems to be becoming something of a reoccuring line — it's said once in the loading screen of xehanort and eraqus's chess game with the exact same wording, ephemer says a variant of it in the khux finale ("it's not over till it's over, skuld."), and even player sorta says it right before they fade away though it's a lot more truncated and could be handwaved away ("it's not over yet."). it's interesting to me to see who gets those lines, and out of all of those luxord's sticks out like a sore thumb to me; sure, games are kinda his thing, but it seems like a line that's gaining some importance, so to give it to luxord of all people feels suspicious — all part of him becoming more important in the story moving forward supposedly

(and this probably isn't related at all so i'm just slipping this in last, but in that dark road q&a there's a question about odin where nomura just says "Naturally, Master Odin also had a master to mentor him. Said master entrusted Odin with a mission, which actually ties in with the identity of the blue-robed individual." and it just . it hasn't left my head because there are so many things you could extrapolate from it. does this imply player and odin had the same master? or is player odin's master? are they completely unrelated and the mission is the only thing that connects them? it keeps me up at night)

anyway i'm rambling but tldr; i think there's a lot of tiny details that link player and luxord together and it's fun to think about what their connection could possibly be, and i'm more than excited to see what gets revealed about them in the coming installments !!

What if Demyx is the reincarnation of Player?

I’ve seen more of the Luxord is player theory for longer obviously (take the x out of his name to rearrange it into “Ludor” meaning “to play”, his connection to cards and by extension the original KHX, etc) but!

Demyx being Player’s reincarnation instead would still confer most of the narrative benefits that Luxord in that role would fill and wouldn’t have that weird Quadratum conflict of screentime that Luxord seems to be set up for. We have about the same amount of backstory for both of them (basically nothing except that there was something keyblade related going on) so I guess either is a possibility that’s on the table.

Luxord’s interactions with Xigbar in Re:Mind do still more sell me on him as Player (or like. Otherwise having a major connection to the KHUX era) than Demyx, though. Demyx doesn’t really have anything special like that beyond the idea that being Player3 AND having the connection to Quadratum that some voice actor choices might imply would be a bit much.

Demyx definitely has something funky going on I just can’t personally dredge up anything from my memories to imply that he would be Player over Luxord yknow. Frankly to me he is more likely some guy who got un-dream eatered or like a character who’s gonna be introduced for the first time in ML.

ironically, my luxord theorizing ultimately gives me very little about luxord himself. i feel i have everything surrounding him worked out in a way that i am pleased with, but he himself... is a mystery.

what we know about luxord:

he is supposedly connected to an ancient keyblade legacy, but we have yet to see him as a keyblade wielder

he gets sent after the black box by xigbar, which is what makes him finally start questioning orders above when he has never done so

he shares a “the game isn’t over until it’s over” quote with an unknown author associated with eraqus

there is a chauffer in yozora’s world that bears similar hair and an identical voice to luxord

“gambler of fate” is not an accidental title

luxord’s true name could be lodur, a possible alternative and seldom-used name for loki, who was known to have had issues with bragi... who was a face of luxu at one point. however, another name could be ludor, with roots from the latin word ludo with relation to play, which may tie him to the player character of missing link. the usage of these meanings as references may not be mutually exclusive, although obviously both cannot be his actual name.

theorizing about the box:

based on this video, as well as some information in this video, i do not believe it was luxu who ended up hiding the box. i believe luxu made a deal with brain and handed over the box and no name to him. brain hid the box in such a way that it remained hidden until the tear in time, when it appeared in reality buried under the crossroads in the keyblade graveyard. this is why luxu had someone searching for it, because he didn’t know where it was. this is also why he withdrew himself from the war via faking his own death when he did, around the tear in time. it’s possible something happened to make him realize the box was in reality again.

brain’s eventual foray into unreality, bearing no name, is how the master of masters discovered unreality.

theorizing about brain’s legacy:

now, we know eraqus is descended from one of the dandelions. we also know he looks a lot like brain, and i do believe brain is who he is descended from. eraqus shares brain’s critique of how things must be because it’s how they’re written, and he seems to be aware of the eventual tear in time as shown by his fantasy chess battle with xehanort in the past. if the tear was a part of brain’s plan as the virus, it would make sense that eraqus would be aware of it — as well as how he’s aware of the old masters himself, when that information seems to be meant to be secret.

luxord also bears a similar critique of the concept of fate being unchangeable, stating in 358/2 days that: “Only a fool bends to the cards. We shape our fates through action.” we also know that he states aloud that the game isn’t over until it’s over, which is something that is stated in one of the keystagram posts that shows up in connection with eraqus depicting the tear in time.

if eraqus is descended from brain and luxord is connected to that legacy in some way, it would make sense. brain’s entire plan is to be a virus in the system, working against this future set in stone. it would not be an illogical leap for those associated with his legacy to bear similar ideals.

painting some sort of cohesive picture:

personally, i’m tired of [x] is [y] reveals and i hope we do not get another. it worked very well for luxu, giving us a fun twist on a theory that was common in the fandom that i never agreed with for a few reasons. doing so again would feel lazy to me.

but the word legacy is used, and i hope that is what is played with here. i do not think luxord is brain or someone we know, but he is a part of that legacy. viruses multiply, and if nomura is going to run with the virus metaphor i think it would make sense to run with it multiplying.

here is the picture i am painting, although it still lacks some specifics: brains’ legacy has had some familiarity with unreality and the concept of fate not being set in stone. luxord is a part of that (possibly starting during his life as the player character of missing link). knowledge of the old masters and the black box has been passed down throughout that legacy as the “virus” has spread. when told to seek the box by xigbar, luxord finally started questioning things to figure out who the order truly came from because he knows the history of the box.

i also believe luxord is, in a way, from unreality: xigbar’s element is space but he’s from a different time, and in turn luxord’s element is time but he is from a different space. the two are foils, and i believe luxord will end up very helpful to sora and company going into this next saga. but despite being from unreality, i do not think that is his initial home location — it’s possible that, instead of time travel or body snatching, brain and his legacy have worked out how to hide out in unreality in order to play with their positions and time in reality.

of course, i’ve typed all this and we could very well get a “luxord is brain” or a “luxord is sigurd” reveal that will ruin my life. whatever.

Morning warm-up with Luxord/Ludor as Player. Even if I've never been a big fan of Luxord I really like that theory.

As you exit the forest of the north, just south of the Lunari River, you cross from a densley wooded area into the wide open farmland of Ludor. 

If you follow this path down the hill, you’ll eventually find the main street and entirety of the official town of Ludor. The residents live spread out across the land, bordering their fields in small clan bundles or a few families. 

This cropland feeds much of the north and large parts of the Veyan realm to the south.
