World War Z (film) Release date June 2, 2013
World War Z is a 2013 American post-apocalyptic zombie action horror film directed by Marc Forster, with a screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan, Drew Goddard, and Damon Lindelof, from a story by Carnahan and J. Michael Straczynski, based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Max Brooks. The film stars Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a former United Nations investigator who travels the world gathering clues to find a way to stop a zombie pandemic.[12] The ensemble supporting cast includes Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Matthew Fox, Ludi Boeken, Fana Mokoena, David Morse, Peter Capaldi, Pierfrancesco Favino, Ruth Negga, and David Andrews.
Pitt's Plan B Entertainment secured the film rights in 2007, and Forster was approached to direct. In 2009, Carnahan was hired to rewrite the script. Filming began in July 2011 in Malta, on an estimated $125 million budget, before moving to Glasgow in August 2011 and Budapest in October 2011. Originally set for a December 2012 release, the production suffered some setbacks. In June 2012, the film's release date was pushed back, and the crew returned to Budapest for seven weeks of additional shooting. Damon Lindelof was hired to rewrite the third act, but did not have time to finish the script, and Drew Goddard was hired to rewrite it. The reshoots took place between September and October 2012, ballooning the budget to a reported $190 million, although some publications have listed it as high as $269 million.
World War Z premiered in London on June 3, 2013, and was chosen to open the 35th Moscow International Film Festival. The film premiered in New York, and Los Angeles on June 14, 2013, and released everywhere on June 21, 2013, in the United States, in 2D and RealD 3D. The film received positive reviews for Brad Pitt's performance and as a realistic revival of the zombie genre, but received certain criticism for the anti-climax, outdated CGI, and lack of faithfulness to the source material. Regardless, the film was a commercial success, grossing over $540 million against a production budget of $190 million, becoming the highest-grossing zombie film of all time. A sequel was announced shortly after the film's release, but in February 2019 it was cancelled, reportedly due to budget issues
Plot
Former UN field agent Gerry Lane, his wife Karin, and their two young daughters, Rachel and Connie, are in heavy Philadelphia traffic when the city is overrun by zombies. As chaos spreads, the Lanes escape to Newark, New Jersey and take refuge in an apartment with a Hispanic couple and their young son Tommy, though they are forced to escape with Tommy when a horde of zombies attack the apartment and the parents are infected. UN Deputy Secretary-General Thierry Umutoni, an old friend of Gerry, sends a helicopter that extracts the Lanes to a U.S. Navy vessel in the Atlantic Ocean where scientists and military personnel are analyzing the worldwide outbreaks. Andrew Fassbach, a young virologist, posits that the plague is a virus and that the development of a vaccine depends on finding the origin. Gerry is told he and his family will be evicted unless he helps Fassbach find the outbreak source.
Gerry, Fassbach, and a small SEAL escort fly to Camp Humphreys, a military base in South Korea, but zombies attack. Fassbach turns to enter the aircraft, slips and accidentally shoots himself to death. Surviving American soldiers at the camp rescue the team and Gerry learns the infection was introduced to the base by its doctor. A former CIA operative imprisoned at the base sends Gerry to Jerusalem, where the Mossad set up a safe zone before the outbreak was officially acknowledged. Zombies attack again as the team returns to the plane, and only Gerry and his pilot escape.
In Jerusalem, Gerry meets Mossad chief Jurgen Warmbrunn. Months earlier, the Mossad had intercepted Indian military transmissions describing troops fighting zombies. Forwarned, Israel, with Palestine Security assistance, erect huge walls. Loud, celebratory singing from refugees sends the zombies into a frenzy. As the zombies scale the walls, Warmbrunn orders Israeli soldiers to escort Gerry back to his plane. On the way, Gerry notices zombies ignoring an old man and an emaciated boy. Soon after, one of Gerry's escorts, identifying herself only as "Segen" (Lieutenant), is bitten in the hand; Gerry quickly amputates to prevent infection. The pair escape on a commercial airliner as Jerusalem falls.
Gerry radios Thierry, who diverts the flight to a lab in Wales. A zombie stowaway attacks during the landing approach. Gerry blows the infected out of the aircraft with a grenade, causing the plane to crash. Gerry is injured, but he and Segen reach the lab. He explains he has seen zombies ignore the seriously injured or terminally ill since they would be unsuitable hosts for viral reproduction. He suggests that they test this by deliberately infecting someone. Deadly pathogens are stored in a lab wing already overrun by zombies. Gerry, Segen, and the lead WHO doctor fight their way through but are separated. Gerry continues to the pathogen vault as Segen and the doctor return to the main building. Gerry hurriedly grabs vials of pathogens but a zombie is blocking the door, prompting Gerry to inject himself and open the vault, testing his theory. The zombies ignore him as he returns to the main building where his infection is identified and cured.
Gerry and Segen reach a Safe Zone at Freeport, Nova Scotia as the new vaccine derived from deadly pathogens provides camouflage for survivors and an offensive can begin against the zombies' plague. In the end, Gerry finds and embraces his family: Karin, Rachel, Connie, and Tommy, who is accepted to the family.

Hollywood Movie Review – Brad Pitt’s World War Z Review & Rating
World War Z Star Cast: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Ludi Boeken, Matthew Fox, Fana Mokoena, David Morse, Elyes Gabel, Peter Capaldi, Sterling Jerins and Abigail Hargrove
Director: Marc Forster
‘World War Z’ is a subtle combination of a medical thriller and a horror film. Packed with fleetingly captivating emotional moments and mobs of panic-stricken people running from something we cannot see, the film evokes mixed reaction.
Inspired by, if not really based on Max Brooks’ novel with the same name, the story is about zombie – Apocalypse.
Director Marc Froster wastes no time in introducing the conflict into the narration. After the initial two scenes of family bonding, Gerry Lane (Brad Pitt), a former UN investigator, along with his wife Karen (Mireille Enos) and two daughters (Sterling Jerins and Abigail Hargrove), are caught in the mayhem on the streets of Philadelphia, where a section of the mob appears to have gone insane, randomly attacking others.
Suddenly, the city becomes a disaster zone, infested with zombies.
Thierry (Fana Mokoena), the under secretary of the UN, arranges to have the Lanes rescued, and taken to an aircraft carrier in the Atlantic. Here, Gerry is pressurised to return to the field to find an answer to the malaise.
For the safety of his family, Gerry agrees to lead the investigation. The task takes him from South Korea to Jerusalem and finally to meet with survivors at the World Health Organization building in Cardiff, Wales.
In the film, the story is narrated through Gerry’s point of view, whereas in the book, the story is narrated through a nameless journalist’s point of view. So, beyond the international settings and the concept of depicting how different world governments react in such a situation, the film doesn’t bear much resemblance to Brooks’ book and at the same time, shows us the magnitude of the epidemic.
The wide angle aerial shots and the set action pieces are beautifully and amazingly captured by cinematographer Robert Richardson. What’s commendable is how the makers have beautifully merged film with the computer generated images of the rushing zombies that lead to the mountainous heap of them piled up. That breathtaking image will take some time to leave your mental space.
Though the film is overt and largely producer-actor Brad Pitt’s canvas, he fails to create an impression which he critically desired. His soulful and non-triumphalist central performance was largely unconvincing as; a harried and agitated father or of a person who is thrown in such a momentous operation.
Despite the contributions of four writers, director Marc Frosters’ endeavour fails to enamour you. The film has gaping plot-holes especially with the time-line of the story and the infestation. They do not sync.
And to top it all, the World War Z movie that begins with a very promising and engaging premise plateaus on to the climax as the denouement seems to be mechanical and contrived, and that is its undoing.
Buzz Rating: 2/5

Movie Review: “World War Z”
Rating: PG-13 (intense and frightening scenes, violence)
Length: 116 minutes
Release Date: June 21, 2013
Directed by: Marc Forster
Genre: Horror/Action/Drama
Stars: 3.5 out of 5
It’s the end of the world as three billion people morph into rage-filled, fast-paced zombies intent on shredding all living flesh into a smorgasbord of bite-sized snack food. Thirty years ago, this type of plotline would come with an action hero with bulging muscles and a heavy accent-or, more likely, to cult-horror star Bruce Campbell-but 2013’s “Word War Z” features Brad Pitt in the role of warrior-savior. Although the movie hit a few potholes during filmmaking, most critics agreed that Pitt fits in the role nicely.
“World War Z,” which was slated to hit theaters in December 2012, was rescheduled for a June 2013 release after Paramount decided the film could benefit from a do-over. Treating the film like the victim of one of its own zombies, the studio ripped off the ending, rewrote part of the script, and reshot a good part of the climactic ending. Movie critics received the news of the “World War Z” surgery with the same enthusiasm with which villagers received Frankenstein’s monster. Luckily, director Marc Forster and his team did a better stitch job on “World War Z” than Victor did with his creation, and pre-release reviews are piping good vibes into the entertainment industry.
“Word War Z” is based on a book by Max Brooks and features global themes commonly associated with apocalypse movies-especially those with the shuffling beat of zombie feet. The movie distinguishes itself from cult classic zombie fare and popular zombie television shows by delivering a different sort of monster. The hordes pictured in “World War Z” are like undead human locusts. They swarm up and over buildings, cities, and people in an onslaught akin to moving water. The result of this change in zombie-related viewer expectations is both breathtaking and nightmare inducing. One of the strengths of “World War Z” is in the scenes of terror and devastation, and the filmmakers spare no expense in this area. Viewers see action in New York, Korea, Jerusalem, and more.
In an attempt to highlight a human element amid the global destruction, “World War Z” concentrates on Gerry Lane (Pitt), an employee of the United Nations. Lane and his family struggle with the events of the zombie apocalypse. They find themselves safe aboard a ship in short order, but Gerry’s work isn’t done. He is sent on a mission to find the first person infected with the zombie virus. Lane travels across the world to investigate the outbreak. When Lane encounters other humans, viewers get an even grimmer picture of death and destruction. Human companionship in the universe of “World War Z” is often short-lived and violently ended.
The last third of the movie is the result of Paramount’s decision to take the film through a chop shop, and discerning viewers may be able to tell where the first try stops and the second attempt picks up. There’s a different pace, a different viewpoint on the zombies, and a different feel to the last part of the film. Gerry, who has managed to draw together a small band of survivors, infiltrates a World Health Organization lab in an attempt to discover what started the zombie plague. It’s in these scenes that viewers first get up close and personal with a few zombies. Despite the impressive hordes in the first two thirds of the film, the zombies turn out to be brainless and clumsy entities after all.
“World War Z” includes a competent cast, although no individual stands out with quite so much star power as Pitt. Other actors in the film include Mireille Enos, Daniella Kertesz, James Badge Dale, Ludi Boeken, and Matthew Fox. Overall, the film is fast paced and presents the type of underdog-against-all-odds storyline summer audiences favor. When the camera moves away from the terror of the zombie plague and attempts to shine the light on human elements, the story does get a little clunky, but that’s almost a trademark of zombie films, and it doesn’t detract too much from the film overall.
Other than the impressive scope of rapid zombie hordes, “World War Z” doesn’t bring anything extremely unique to the zombie-apocalypse genre. Even so, the extra work and production delays were probably worth Paramount’s time and money. The result is a movie that stands above average and provides a few hours of adventure for summer audiences.
