Do you have any headcanons of Grelle/Lucifer dealing with their kids being bullied? Like how would they deal/comfort/want them to grow from it?

Hello there, Anon! I'm happy that you're interested in my fanmade family for Lucifer! Yeah, I've in mind a few about how the demon-human halflings live in the Devildom knowing how the full fledged demons don't seem to like "half-breeds" as that's a popular offensive name for calling half human and half demon children.

Luciela Morningstar, who's the eldest daughter of the family really doesn't give a single cent about the demons calling her that name, Lucifer taught her from a very young age(since she was four) that not everyone will like her for who she is, but she doesn't need to worry about it, that she's her father and mother's most precious half demoness and that to them she's precious the way she is. Though she does get upset when her mother's badmouthed in front of her. In my own headcanon, Grelle is seen bad for being the Avatar of Pride's human wife, and so called a pathetic human for demon fodder, that is when she reacts in a feral way, taking out her demon side.

When asked about why she did that, she can't handle the insults given to her mother, so she cries that her mother was told that way. Grelle is used to insults like that, since Satan and Belphie never really accepted her or liked her, so she isn't hurt about that, but she's hurt about seeing her daughter so upset and crying about what her mother was called. Lucifer is just quite furious, he doesn't let anyone speak ill of his wife, but he wants to set a good example for his daughter, so he both comforts her and lectures her about what to do next time, in case the same insults about Grelle are told to her. It's like a lesson of life.

"My daughter, you know full well that your mother is not that and that what other demons say about her, should not affect you. I want you to stand your ground next time, but not really attack them, just use words. That's it."

Noctifer Morningstar is the second oldest son, he's way more frail and sensitive than his oldest sister, he got his mother's personality. A very easily worked up half demon, he's the blank of bullying quite a lot, he isn't like Luciela who attacks and beats up whoever calls her names about Grelle, he just cries on the spot, causing his sister to come and defend him. When brought home to the parents, he explains to them what he's called, in tears. Both parents are upset, since he's their son and like his parents they have to support him. Grelle is more about hugs and lullabies when her children are hurt by other demons. Lucifer does hug them, but not too much, he believes he should teach them to be independent and not too used to Mom and Dad, because not always they will be there for them, so it's a good thing to teach.

"Noctifer Morningstar, you should know whose son are you. My son, and you should be proud of who you are, what that demon simpletons say is untrue and you should not be affected by it. Next time tell them whose son are you, and that your father will personally come and have a chat with them."

Lucifer shows tough love, but not in a bad way, he teaches his kids to be able to defend themselves. Hugs and comfort are okay, but not always at all times, that's not what he wants to teach, he can comfort them all he wants, but also he can teach them lessons of life that will be useful for them in the future.

The twins, Lucien and Lucian Morningstar are too young, they're five and they don't really go out of home, they always stay wether with Grelle or Lucifer when either of them are around. Lucifer teaches them the same he's taught his two oldest, about how they shouldn't let others words affect them because they're perfect in their eyes. But it doesn't mean that Lucifer won't go and find those demons himself, of course he does, but he doesn't mention that to the kids. That's why that the four children aren't bullied anymore. Papa Luci won't let some other pathetic bully demon put his kids insecure about who they are. Oh, no. He teaches them a big lesson of course and let's just say it's effective because the demons who dared bullied the children of the Avatar of Pride never really bullied them again or spoke ill of Grelle in front of them.

Warnings: None but Satan does do something to slightly inconvenience you multiple times. Reader is GENDER NEUTRAL

Satan loves hearing you talk. It didn't matter what type of voice you had, he loved it all the same because of how well it calmed him down, provided you're talking to only him of course. He loves the attention you give him and loves having it all to himself. So how does he remedy these biting needs of his? He asks you to read to him of course. His two favourite things coming together, oh a little pet would have been the perfect cherry on top.

'Maybe in the future,' he thinks.

It's a pleasant experience to have you in his lap, your head resting against his chest as you read loud enough for only the two of you to hear. However, the true treat is hearing you stutter and struggle over tongue twisting words, he found it downright adorable to see you struggle. He's done this a few times and he's sure you've caught up by now. He would purposely find books with words he assumed you couldn't pronounce on your first try and was always pleased to hear your smooth reading come to a sudden halt only to be replaced with stammering. He loved correcting you while you struggled, it gave him a bit of a weird power trip and he got to see your pretty little glare as well.

"'As Colonel William made his accusation, the victim's wife let out an incre- incredelous-,'" you let out a groan of frustration as you try your best to get the word to form as well as it did inside your head.

'Incredulous, Mc! You know this word!'

"Incre-" you can hear Satan snicker behind you and you have half a mind to slam the book shut and get off of him but he's quick to stop you before you can.

"Incredulous, pet." He sounds so smug as he says that word, as if he's teaching you something new.

"Incredulous."

"Good kitten, one more time," you give him a half hearted glare. "Repeat after me, incredulous."

"...Incredulous," you say with a bit of a bite this time.

"There you go," he can't stop the laugh that finally bubbles out of him as you punch his arm as hard as you can, knowing full well that it doesn't affect him in the slightest.

"I'm just trying to help, Mc."

"It was cute at first, but this is the 5th time you had to correct me."

"Aww, you think it's cute."

"That's not what I meant, Satan," you give him a pout to really show your displeasure but all it does is make him want to tease you more, but he doesn't say that out loud.

"If you keep teasing me like this, I won't want to read for you ever again."

"An empty threat, pet."

"Oh? Fine then, I'll start hanging around your other brothers more. I could fill a whole calender with the things they invite me to do with them," you can feel him tense up at the threat and you don't even try to hide your pleased grin. He never liked arguing for your attention with his brothers before you two dated, the thought of having to do that again while you two are dating makes him feel agitated.

"You wouldn't."

"I don't know, I mean you HAVE been taking up most of my time lately."

The arms resting around your waist start pulling you closer to him and his grip tightens slightly as well.

"No, I won't allow it."

"You're my boyfriend, not my father."

"Mc, please. I will tie you to my bed if it meant you didn't go."

"'An empty threat, pet'"

"Don't test me, Mc." The glare on his face would send anyone, even his own brothers (save for Lucifer, of course), fleeing, but it only serves to makes you laugh. You plant a quick kiss to his cheek and he lets out a soft scoff in response.

"I'm still angry at you for even bringing that possibility up."

"Are you gonna be angry at me forever?" Your words, though playful, do ease his anger a bit. His glare softens and he sighs loudly before nuzzling his face into your hair, like a cat looking for comfort.

"...No, I can't be mad at you forever."

You can't help but giggle at that answer. "Oh?" You raise your hand up to pet his head, and to your delight he leans into the touch, "and why's that?"

The answer's simple, and he knows you know as well, but he'll indulge you by giving you the answer you want, as an apology for his actions earlier and also as a reminder.

"Because I love you, Mc."

What do you think about Takumi and Reira? Do you think he loves her, and they will grow closer to each other at the end? Maybe thry will become lovers? Or does he really love Hachi?

Hello anon! Sorry for the late reply but yesterday I had a terrible headache and I didn’t feel good enough to analyze this complicated relationship! XD

I start with the fact that I don’t appreciate nor Takumi neither Reira as individual characters, for many reasons. But taken as a couple, I think they would have been good together...if only Takumi loved her as a man should love a woman.

Let’s analyze this deeper.

Takumi admitted himself that Reira was the most precious person to him in the world and, despite Takumi is a liar and a cheater, he was honest about this. This is demonstrated by the fact that he left his wife and his daughter to go to live in London with Reira (which is still “unstable” at the moment, after Ren’s death). But Reira isn’t precious to him because she loves her as a woman: Reira represent for Takumi a sort of paradise, a little corner were everything’s pure and everything’s safe and you still can believe in the magic of the world like a child. Reira is so pure and innocent that Takumi feels disgusted at the idea of touching her. He’s Lucifer and she’s the most perfect angel in the world: that’s how he sees her. He loves her as a sister and as his “happy place” to find peace, but not as a woman. Let’s not forget that the first time Takumi met Reira he was a child who lived with a ill mom, an alcoholic father who used to hit him and a sister who had to sacrifice her future to grow him: in all this mess, Reira with her angelic voice was a bright light for him. Takumi did everything he could for Reira: he learned to play guitar/bass in order to accompany her voice, he found Trapnest and he created the best music to highlight her voice. He put Reira at the center of his life. But concentrated as he was in pursuing with his plan of creating the perfect and unique “singing princess”, he didn’t realize he was making the biggest mistake of all: tying his beloved sister to him forever, with no possibility to came back. Reira, “blinded” by what Takumi did for her and told her, fell in love with him: this is where the situation started to degenerate. Reira wanted Takumi’s love but he couldn’t give it to her, at least not the kind of love she wanted from him; so she started to go out with Yasu and it seemed to work for a bit, but in the end Yasu himself understood that in Reira’s heart there was no space for no one else than Takumi.

Reira’s solitude continued to grow every day, she hoped to find a prince who saved her from the castle where Takumi had closed her but deep in her heart she knew that no one could save her, because she loved that master who had closed her in the castle. Reira loved to sing since she was a child, but Takumi ruined her passion. She understood that Takumi saw her as a goddess but just for her voice, while she wanted to be considered only a girl. His girl. When she realized it, she started to hate her voice and Takumi’s plan for her, she didn’t care that much to be famous or to wear beautiful dresses or to be seen as a role model among the teenagers: she just did all that for Takumi, to please him hoping that he would have loved her one day. But he didn’t, he loved all the other women apart from her. Once Reira asked him “What am I to you?” and despite he didn’t told her the truth that’s what he thought:

Takumi soon noticed that Reira loved him, but he didn’t know what to do and how to act with her. He didn’t want to deceive her and he didn’t want to force himself doing something he would have regretted. So he just ignored the problem for years, until he met Hachi. Then we all know what happened and he announced in front of Reira that he would have get married. While talking with Ren after Reira ran away from the recording studio, all the truth came out:

Takumi felt awful about that situation, he felt guilty for not being able to love Reira as she wanted. He realized that his mistakes had probably no solution, he ad gone too far. He had trapped his beloved sister and he’s the only one who can give her freedom, but freedom had a price too high to pay...

The more the story went on, the more their relationship started to break. Reira met Shin and he seemed the prince that she had waited for long time, but in the end (as Ren told her too) she decided to remain at Takumi’s side (and Takumi played his part in this since he told Shin to stay out from her). It doesn’t matter how much she can long for her freedom or how much she can love another man: she would have never renounced to her place beside Takumi. This paradox lead her to suffer more and more, her solitude was killing her slowly and painfully. So in the end Takumi, in the last attempt to save his sister from the abyss where she was falling, gave her what she wanted and slept with her. But things didn’t go as planned: Reira knew that Takumi still didn’t love her despite their night of sex, so she felt abused by him. She felt he did it just in order to convince her to continue to sing, while actually Takumi did that also because he felt guilty, knowing that her unhappiness was just because of him and his mistakes.

Answering to your question...no, I don’t think they will became lovers because Reira clearly showed to feel unconfortable after they slept together and, more importantly, after Ren’s death she lost her mind and she’s not herself anymore. I think the reason why she lives with Takumi in England despite she says she hates him and she wanted to destroy everything that was precious to him is because she can’t stay alone and she doesn’t have anyone else to stay with who can take care of her. And another reason can be, of course, that she still loves him despite the hate.

About Takumi really loving Hachi...well, my personal point of view about Takumi is that he has a strange concept of “love”, maybe doing to the fact that he grew up with a messed family. I have the impression that Takumi doesn’t know what real love is, because if you love someone you can’t cheat on him/her and Takumi cheated on Hachi many times. So yes, maybe Takumi really loved Hachi but in his own way, which is so different from the real love (the one that Nobu felt for Hachi for example).

By the way I think Takumi and Reira’s relationship is one of the best portraied relationship in all the manga, Takumi’s special chapter is all about it and you can clearly deduce what are his feelings for her.

Screencap supported scene breakdown analysis (requested by an anon)

Okay, let’s start with the opening shot

We see the whole of the throne here, and the fact Lucifer is clearly sat upon it, which tells us that despite Sabrina ‘claiming her crown’ after winning the Unholy Regalia, Lucifer is still very much in charge. He’s on the throne here and he’s comfortable, but look at how much Lilith is also leaning on it. She’s all over it. Lilith definitely is showing her claim too, not just by her own right, but by the child she carries inside her. They alll dismissed her because she wasn’t a Morningstar, but now she is one by proxy. Also I think this whole positioning is probably how Lilith was often stood by the throne in the pre-CAOS days when she was sitll in adoration and in love with the Dark Lord. She is playing a part here, after all, in order to survive, but what’s interesting is she’s not the one leaning in; he is. Showing that her ‘performance’ is working, that he is slowly, but surely starting to let down his guard, and believing Lilith is ‘back on side’.

I have to admit I’m surprised at how approving you are of your only daughter getting married

Lilith’s whole language is pushing the domesticity here. She’s talking to him as a Mother(Stepmother might talk to a Father, rather than as a servant to a Lord, making more of that connection.

And look at the body language here, the performance she’s making:

Head down, eyes down as she talks about how he should be more selective, managing to not only make herself look suitably servile, but she looks non-threatening and demure. Fucking demure. Something Lilith definitely isn’t, but she’s playing the role of ‘expectant Mother’ and ‘caring Stepmother’ and ‘concerned partner’. Lilith is doing absolutely everything to appear non-threatening, most likely with the intent of having Lucifer forget himself long enough for her to gain the advantage. I also feel the whole vibe here is, despite Lilith saying that they were definitely ‘not together’, Lucifer has started behaving as if they are. After all she was ‘Satan’s Concubine’, and he’s not going to give up those privileges if he doesn’t want to. And I suspect if that was the case, Lilith has been ‘submitting’ for the sake of survival and the long-con, but it also adds another layer to her downcast eyes and appearing non-threatening. It’s both a reaction and a defence.

She only meets his gaze to make her final point. And what’s important is she doesn’t shy away from that gaze.

She meets it and doesn’t waver, she is making her point and she’s not trembling or hesitating. Lilith may be trapped in a situation here, but she’s not without power and she’s aware of that, and she is actively using it. And it’s an interesting/funny side-note that the point she’s making is ‘Caliban is bad for Sabina’. Stepmother!Lilith activate! Which fits in nicely with the Just-doesn’t-like-Caliban!Lilith. And when she meets his gaze, challenging his decision to give his approve, does Lucifer get mad or angry? Does he tell her to remember her place? Does he punish her? Nope. He leans for gossip sharing opinions time:

He leans in to Lilith, talking with her in a very private and intimate way, and starts sharing all his opinions and reasons why he thinks Caliban is a good match. This is someone who he says betrayed him, who he said he plans to kill, and yet, Lilith has managed to make him forget himself and take her as is confidante again. I have no doubt that had the pregnancy not been sped up, Lilith would have spent more months encouraging this trust and faith in her, playing to his ego and presumptions.

But throughout this whole conversation we see Lilith consciously making an effort to look close, whilst always looking a little on edge, while Lucifer in his element, totally comfortable and absolutely happy to share his thoughts with Lilith. More than likely these moments are brief and we see Lucifer remembering her ‘betrayal’ and treating her as such (just as we saw his possessive anger when he noticed she was absent from the council meeting), but these are flashes of moments where Lilith is making him drop his guard and I would like to think over time they would have become more frequent and Lilith would have used them to her advantage.

However it’s interesting to note that when Lucifer makes this intense close eye contact, Lilith breaks her gaze away

In fact, she’s shown to be unable to bear looking at him (either out of fear or disgust or a mixture of the two) so much that as he talks, she actually physically turns away

Which when you go through the scene more slowly and with more focus Lucifer does seem to notice, if only subtly. But you can see above that Lilith literally cannot bear to look at him or listen to him. We have confirmation here that her whole leaning in, talking softly, standing close, is an all an act for her own survival and it’s one she physically hates. I would say it has comparisons to Zelda when she has to pretend to be still under the Caligari spell. Knowing it’s required, but hating every minute of it, and feeling trapped in a different way to how you were trapped before, but still trapped.

While he’s talking we see her eye roll secretly before offering tight and polite smiles, nodding in a display of agreement, pandering to all of Lucifer’s logic and ideas and opinions. Just as Zelda had to be seen to agree with everything Faustus said. We even see Lilith actively sigh with boredom and exhaustion at Lucifer going on and on with himself. And you hear the sigh too. I think this is interesting, not only because it confirms Lilith has not fallen back into old habits with him, she hasn’t become enamoured of him again and that she finds him tiresome...but that, at this point, Lilith feels confident enough in her own position and her own to be able to bored and tired rather than just afraid. And when you see how much she turns to just fear the moment she has Adam, tells me that she definitely did have a pregnancy-long plan to victory in place which was destroyed by the intervention of Caliban and the Plague Kings.

The thing that drags Lilith’s full attention back is when Lucifer declares the most important reason to agree to the marriage is because Caliban looks great shirtless

Lilith looks quietly and suitably horrified and confused. You can’t see it as much in a singular screencap but she does look at Lucifer like ‘what the fuck?’, because you’re not meant to be getting the hots for the shirtless wonder of your daughter’s future husband. Also, because in a political arena how good someone looks topless should not be the most important reason to have them around. And also, though Lilith admits Caliban is handsome, you get the vibe she means that in the same way you can stay a statue is pretty...you’re not actually sexually attracted to it. So now with both Lucifer and Sabrina liking Clay Boy, Lilith is clearly thinking she’s the only sane one left.

But the horror is nowhere near as much as it is when he mentions Grandchildren

Aside from the fact Lilith has no intentions of being a Step-Grandmother to any Caliban babies (literal personal hell), there’s also the added fact Sabrina is just sixteen and not even married yet and Lucifer is already mentioning her popping out kids. Considering how Lilith was treated in the beginning by the False God and Adam as expected to fulfil certain roles as a woman (wife, mother, someone who loves children and is nurturing and gentle and blah blah) it’s probably a wee bit triggering to hear the same things being expected of Sabrina. We’ve all (Michelle included, for that matter) already said that Lilith probably sees a lot of herself in Sabrina, a younger version of herself, so extra trigger point. But then the obviously main concern is ‘what the fuck was the point of me getting pregnant with your son to save my fucking life if you’re off already planning fucking grandchildren??’. Which is a fair and concerning point. Like as I said above, Lilith definitely had a pregnancy-long plan for her own continued survival and likely Lucifer’s defeat, and this talk of grandchildren is now throwing a big ole spanner in the works, And you see the flash of fear about this:

Microexpression of fear right there. And you see her quickly recalculating, trying to figure everything out, trying to ensure her own survival, and that of her child for that matter, isn’t going to be too effected by this...but in the end she’s forced to ask him outright. “And what does that mean for our child?” And she does deliberately use ‘our’, reminding him ‘you do have a fucking son to come remember??’

But she doesn’t manage to completely hide her fear and concern as she asks. You can see that in all likelihood her heart is pounding stressfully in her chest right now. Because right now all her plans are threatening to go right down the drain, and she’s thinking that carrying his child is going to do nothing except make her a prisoner all over again...and possibly dead eventually.

Lucifer, however, just grins and says ‘Competition, I imagine’

Competition. And what does competition mean in these sorts of circles? It’s the same sort of competition that the Princes in Stardust had, they all killed each other in an effort to win the throne. This is going to be the upbring of Lilith’s child; constantly fighting his nieces and nephews for his right to the throne, constantly having threats on his life, constant fights in general...all in the name of ‘competition’, which Lucifer apparently thinks is a good, healthy thing for a fucking child to have.

And you don’t have to be good at reading microexpressions to know what Lilith thinks about all this

High key horrified. And you also see elements of disgust. Lilith is genuinely horrified at the idea of her son just constantly at risk in the name of ‘competition’ and that Lucifer thinks this is perfectly okay. I think we genuinely see here the first flash of Lilith as Adam’s Mother. She was low key concerned before, but the moment Lucifer says this, her emotions get upped straight to horrified. I mean we saw in later episodes that she was perfectly okay with the idea of her son challenging Lucifer when he was grown, but that’s waiting till he was an adult and challenging one person for the sake of something important. Entirely different from ‘constantly fighting for your life, being attacked, never resting, in order to have some healthy competition’. A word which also implies, Lucifer would just have an attitude of ‘the strongest survive’, regardless of who suffers or who dies. I mean odds are Adam would be more powerful than the hypothetical grandkids considering his parentage, so the fact Lilith is horrified, enough so that she goes to SABRINA’S AUNTS in a effort to stop the wedding, seems to be much more linked to concern for her unborn child than any genuine claims to power. And I think foreshadows the rest of her part 4 narrative and just how far she’ll go for Baby Adam.

And look, you can genuinely see her recalculating her plans and what she needs to do next.

I hope you enjoy Anon it’s a bit short, I might do something with it in the future but for now I’m going to take a break from Dark Lord x Reader prompts and focus on other fandoms and will probably open my requests again soon.

You weren’t comfortable here not by a long shot. Surrounded by the masked dignitaries and the filthy rich, in a dress that you would never have put on if it wasn’t for your boyfriend begging you. Hell you wouldn’t have even been here at this god awful place trying to ease your lack of comfort in this stifling dress with the free flowing champagne that these snobs apparently were providing by the barrel full.

But he said he needed you here and that it was really important because it was the first time his boss had invited him to a party at his own home. And you had agreed because you loved him and thought that tonight would be fun and filled with engaging conversation but when he brought you to meet his boss and his wife he didn’t let you get a word in edge wise, and you realized, he just wanted you there for arm candy and then he left you here to defend for yourself.

It was probably your fourth glass of champagne and the bubbles were finally giving you the courage and funny enough a clear enough mind for you to decide what you needed to do.

You started weaving your way through the throng of people that were conversing and laughing obnoxiously loud; obviously taking advantage of the free flowing champagne like you were. You looked back to where your boyfriend was still conversing with his boss and his wife not having noticed that you weren’t even there by his side.

“Bastard.” You growled storming into the next room that would lead you closer to the door and out of this hell hole when suddenly you bumped into someone, hard.

Strong hands came up and grabbed your arms steadying you, that champagne must have hit you harder than you thought it did.

“Well I wouldn’t want to be the poor bastard that incurred that kind of wrath from you, darling.” He smiled, it was a wolffish thing; that made you stop in your tracks making you feel... enraptured. It was as if you were lost in his dark stare, as he saw down to the bones of your soul.

“Tell me darling. Who here has made you so upset that you are leaving such a fabulous party?”

You felt compelled to answer him, his very being seemed to hum with danger like a flashy warning sign but the warmth and comfort he brought you as his hands ran up and down on your bare arms, loosened your lips.

“My boyfriend.” You said softly.

“Oh? Interesting and what did the bastard do?” His said his arms never ceasing the slow rubbing on your arms.

“He used me, to get in favor with his boss, he made me arm candy and then he left me alone in this damn place.”

“You’re right, he is a bastard.” He said smiling lightly and it instantly brought a smile to your face too. “But I don’t think that leaving the party is the best way to get back at him.”

You furrowed you’re eyebrows. “I don’t want to get back at him.”

He smirked. “Oh, but don’t you? Like you said he left you all alone here by yourself, and he was stupid enough to leave you alone looking like that with a room full of scoundrels; myself included.”

You chuckled lightly. “You don’t look like a scoundrel.”

He smirked then his hands tightened on your arms just a hair before he brought you closer to his body, you could already feel the heat pooling off of him as he held you close so he could whisper in your ear.

“Don’t be fooled by appearances darling. I’m the biggest scoundrel here.” He whispered to you, his lips lightly brushing the shell of your ear, making you heat everywhere.

Do you think Faustus actually ever loved or possibly still loves Zelda?

same anon from the love question: just want to clarify that I’m not coming from a place of mal intent. I just like your opinions and I’m curious what you think ♥

Thank you for clarifying because I do tend to be on the defensive for ~*reasons*~, so I appreciate it. 😅

To answer - I really don’t know. I think it depends on your own personal definitions of what love is and whether or not Faustus even has the capacity/comprehension of such a thing.

Nick tells Sabrina in part 1 that witches cannot love in the way mortals do, but we know that isn’t altogether true. Hilda, Ambrose, Sabrina, Edward... they all showed a great and unrestrained capacity for love of both their romantic partners and each other as a family. Zelda, too, of course, but I take particular notice of how reserved she is to admit or express it as freely as the other members of her family (the reasons I think why that is are below).

The companion novels I’ve referenced before really emphasize how much of an anomaly the Spellmans are in the witch community for their devotion and care of each other, so perhaps Nicholas was speaking for the majority when he said witches “can’t” love. But I’m of the belief that, given the evidence via character development of so many “hardened” characters thus far (Prudence, for example), that it’s not so much that they can’t, it’s more so that they aren’t supposed to.

The novels also make clear that the line about the Dark Lord being a “jealous lord” is very true. Witches are taught to serve and be devoted to themselves and no one else, save for Lucifer. Thus, I think that’s part of the reason why Zelda struggles to express the love she has for her family at times... because, as dictated by the religion she’s built her entire life upon, she’s not really supposed to. (There’s actually a passage in the novels where Zelda is wrestling with the “sin” of loving her family more than Satan.)

Love is a nurtured human quality... so if you’re never taught it or shown it... you won’t really know how to cultivate or recognize it yourself.

So... back to Faustus. Prior to the end of part 2, he was as devoted a servant of the Dark Lord that you could find. If their unholy texts directed him not to love another besides Satan, well he certainly wasn’t going to do it. He views it as a useless emotion that gets in the way of his divine destiny (this sentiment is also confirmed in the novels from him). However, there are moments of equal curiosity to me in both the show and books where he allows the potential sabotage of his perceived “destiny” for Zelda - letting her handle Sabrina for resurrecting Tommy, for example, or allowing Hilda back into the Church of Night, despite aiding the False God in laying claim to Sabrina’s soul (imagine a Catholic priest reversing the excommunication of a Christian who knowingly aided a Satanist in claiming a soul... would never happen, or at least not without extreme backlash). Literally no other character can or has swayed him on anything... only her.

Does that equate to love? Well no, in my own personal definitions, it does not. But it does demonstrate that Zelda means something to him. That he would allow her to maneuver him at all suggests that her presence has value to him and that the worry of losing her can, at times, outweigh his own personal ambitions (to a point, of course).

There are several references to his conflicted and confused emotions about Zelda in the novels, too - ex. he says she is “very special,” considers himself “dear to her” (which is highly debatable of course, like boy maybe you THOUGHT), and “likes her because she is unconquerable, but is afraid of her for that very reason, too.”

Could he have loved her in the past? Maybe. But would he have been aware of it or accepted that’s what he was feeling when he’d be taught his whole life not to love (that it was a sin to love someone)? I doubt it.

I think, based on what we’ve been shown thus far, the safest thing to say is that he had affection for her, though I’d probably throw in a bit of unhealthy obsession with her in there, too. Hence, him flying off the handle and placing her under a mind control spell. If he couldn’t have her (if she remained “unconquerable”) then no one else would. Imo, that’s not love. That’s fear. (And how he handled that fear was cowardly.)

As for the future - well, both he and Zelda have broken themselves free from the chains of Satanic tenants and rules now. They don’t have to deny themselves of love or from loving others. Hecate seems like a goddess in favor of love and affection, so points to Zelda for that. The Eldritch Terrors... remains to be seen, but I’d take a guess they aren’t campaigning on the idea of love. However, since they are meant to be the darkest forces in existence... perhaps their torturous effects on the mind will make Faustus re-evaluate what he had in his life prior to all of this and he’ll try to mend what’s been broken. With a fuckton of atoning and explaining and groveling and “penance.” Perhaps for the first time, he will be forced to feel emotions in order to navigate the labyrinth of madness he’s unleashed. (Or maybe he’ll tumble further down with it, we don’t know!) But if there is any mystical force more powerful than darkness, it’s love. (*whispers* which I think is what Marie is there to teach them all, so good luck getting through your wife’s girlfriend, Fausty) (if she and Marie stay together, that is) (which tbh... ehhhh, not sure if they’re gonna make it) (but will enjoy the ride) (ahem) So we’ll see.

The Dreamer by Whatwashernameagain an Analysis? Chapter 2! Part 3

Also, I am currently sick so bear with me….

We left off with Logan’s first kill and the difference between The Utilitarianist’s vs. The Dreamer’s views. The thing is, The Dreamer isn’t his own hero, but rather the vision of a team with their own agenda. Still, Roman, despite the attempt to control him, has his own passions.

“Roman could barely be held back. The man who’d been killed, Richard Snyder, had owned the largest chemical production company in the world and had been blamed for the death of a large amount of people in Vietnam due to a herbicide that had leaked into the phreatic water. He’d also been a father of three girls and felt behind a grieving wife” (Whatwashernameagain).

This paragraph gives a bit of background into Logan’s first kill, the first indication that he is becoming too cold, too focused on his work that he is losing his humanity. Logan may not care for the individual as he works but taking a man’s life is something you don’t come back from. The fact that he has finally done so pushes him into an entirely new level of villainy. I think that Roman sees that. He may not know Logan on a personal level yet but as we learned in the first chapter Roman has a love and caring disposition for everyone whether it is the man responsible for countless deaths in Vietnam or a villain responsible for his death. He shows no remorse for Logan at this point but as a reader I think we realize that this is the first step Logan takes towards losing himself in his own darkness.

Eva goes on to talk about how he was upset about the deaths due to the chemical leak and how he grieved for them and their families. However, we also see his ignorant optimism that has become his trademark quite quickly.

“Accidents were a terrible thing and he was sure Mr. Snyder hadn’t meant for any of this to happen. People were good and cared about each other in his opinion. After the public blame the terrorist had put on his shoulders before – there was no other word for it – lynching the poor man, the media reacted to the crime in a manner that deeply shocked the sensitive young man. Instead of condemning the horrifying acts harshly, they discussed the accidents that had caused the unfortunate deaths in Vietnam and demanded consequences to avoid such accidents in the futures!” (Whatwashernameagain).

He convinces himself the Snyder never meant for any of the deaths to happen, which, for those of us who know how the real world works; we know that the more likely reality is that Snyder probably cut corners and didn’t care much that he ruined so many people’s lives and even paid to keep it quiet. Still, Roman states that he believed people were good and cared about each other at their core and maybe that is true for the individual; after all, that is how Roman sees people: individually. So… There is a lot I can say here… and when I say a lot, I mean a LOT. I will attempt to keep this section a bit brief, but I did want to touch on some philosophy and sociology here.

In 1995 a book by Howard Bloom called The Lucifer Principle was published (Bloom, Howard). For those of you who haven’t heard of it, it has nothing to do with religion. The Lucifer Principle poses the idea that good and evil, right and wrong, its all a construct of our need to fit everything into a box. Nature does not see things as good or evil. When a lion preys on a wounded animal it is just nature. When a hurricane levels a major city, we don’t view it as evil because it is apart of nature. When a lightening bolt causes a good portion of a forest to burn down it is nothing but a way to regrow. Yet, despite the fact that we are simply an over evolved species of animal, we hold ourselves to a higher standard. We view things as good or evil but there is no such thing in the natural world. (Keep in mind I am not stating an opinion, I am simple describing the principles of the book). The book explores that the social groups that we create as humans, not us as individuals, are more inclined to do things that we consider ‘evil’ when we have something to gain from it (Bloom, Howard). It argues that “evil is a by-product of nature’s strategies for creation and that it is woven into out most basic biological fabric” (Bloom, Howard). Violent competition is the center of the creation of the superorganism we consider society (Bloom, Howard). It is difficult to argue with this theory when you consider that we really only advance through war. The discovery of vitamin C, disease prevention, tourniquets, X-rays, blood transfusions, vaccines, lipoamides, penicillin, anaesthics, chemotherapy, antibotics, frozen blood products, antiseptics, Gatorade, the recognition of PTSD, discovery of cardia arrest, (weather) radar, walkie-talkies, night vision, duct tape, nuclear technology (including powerplants), Jet engines, digital photography, satellite navigation (GPS), sanitary napkins, Drones, microwaves, computes, superglue, jeeps, canned food, wristwatches, Epipens, the space program, ambulances and even the Internet and so much more have been the result of the wars we have waged throughout the centuries (Pocket-lint) (“Science Museum. Brought to Life: Exploring the History of Medicine”). There are very few things in this world that a social group (not an individual) has not built with greed in mind; whether it be wealth, land, or power, generally speaking there is usually an ulterior motive to man’s creativity. It is hard to argue that we do not strive on being inherently ‘evil’ when there is so much evidence against that.

Once again, I feel as if I need to reinforce a few things: 1. I am not speaking about individual people. I am talking about humanity as a whole. 2. This is not necessarily my belief. This is a concept written in a book that I have read and that has a very well researched scientific basis. So, before anyone drops a mean or horrid anon ask in my box (and proves my point) please try reading the book. You can learn a lot about the world and yourself as well. Now, back to the analysis:

I bring this up for a number of reasons. This argument reinforces Roman’s naivety. He sees humanity as inherently good (if there really is such thing as ‘good’ and ‘evil’); or rather he believes that ‘people’ are good which can both imply an individual person which is probably a correct statement, or ‘people’ as a whole which is perhaps leaning on the outside of ‘not good’ (We are killing our planet, endangering species, committing mass genocide, polluting outer space, and allowing people all around the world to starve, or ignore the fact that 40 years later we are still killing innocent people (including) children in Laos, Vietnam). It also brings into question The Utilitarianist, and the contrast between he and Roman once more. Logan sees the world in a similar light as The Lucifer Principle paints. In fact, I’d be surprised if Eva hadn’t read it. He is also one for intense scientific research which could lead him to the same conclusions as Bloom: That humanity is inherently what we consider ‘evil’ though evil itself is a construct we created and therefore he has no remorse for being labeled as such.

Am I getting too philosophical on you guys? Perhaps it would be best if I moved on….

“Of course, people needed to be protected, every life had value and had to be treasured, but to besmirch this victim’s life work, so soon after his execution – it left Roman angry and terrified for the state of the world he loved. He needed to stop this man, right now! He was strong enough to do it, why must they keep holding him back?” (Whatwashernameagain).

Once again, we see Roman’s compassion for every individual. We see him try and be understanding for those he disagrees with and for those he deems innocent. He is a man of honor after all and feels that the dead should be honored as well. It is almost as if he feels personally attacked, that Snyder’s name is being dragged through the mud after his death. Though it could be that Roman isn’t just thinking about the man, but his family as well; the shame they must feel as the media makes a mockery of their father, son, husband etc.

We also see a glimpse of his frustration at having to wait; of being forced to focus on glamour and speeches while others are moving in the shadows. He is getting his makeup done while Logan is murdering a man! In the next paragraph we see his frustration grow. He talks about his need to prevent such deeds and even pleads to be allowed to do something. But he is still bound by his need to win his father’s approval. He won’t go against him. He even attempts to justify it all but reminding himself that his team is “intelligent, professional experts hired specifically to make him the best possible hero he could be” (Whatwashernameagain). There is always a justification for those in denial… always a reason…

The next para is heartbreaking. We see him waking in pain after he has been cut open, we see him suffer from withdrawals after failed experimental drugs that corroded the lining of his throat and stomach… Pain that is probably unimaginable. Pain that he is probably enduring simply to be ‘useful’ to his father, to do good for the world… to gain the love he has always been denied and can not find it in him to give to himself. He will never be good enough, intelligent enough, useful enough for him to love himself… but maybe… just maybe he can be useful enough for someone to care for him…

Still, he states that none of the pain or experiments were quite as difficult as the waiting. C.S. Lewis said something once that comes to mind when I read about Roman’s mental struggle with waiting, compared to his physical anguish: “Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also more hard to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden: It is easier to say “My tooth is aching” than to say “My heart is broken.” Some might argue that Roman’s heart isn’t broken… but perhaps they are mistaken. Here sits a man who has never truly known love and now he has a chance to obtain that which he has never known… He has a chance to gain the love of his father and of the world and yet he is being denied. He is being turned down the chance to gain what he has always wanted and with each passing day his heart cracks and the fissures only grow… Sure he hasn’t been turned down by an individual that he fell in love with… but there are other types of heart break. Such as the kind you feel when you see your lifelong goal, the one you have worked for forever, fought for, hurt for, dangled in front of you and you can’t reach out to grab it… at least… not yet.

When he does finally reach his goal, we are presented with the contrast of the Pre-Dreamer Roman and the Post-Dreamer Roman:

“Finally, after more than a year of changing and preparing him, of whittling away at the inadequate shell that had been Roman Prince, the odd, weak disappointment of a son, a new man was revealed to the world. A man who was confident, brave and kind. A man who spoke clearly and showed the frightened society the way to a better world. A hero” (Whatwashernameagain).

In the next para we see Roman’s naivety once more, along with the lies that his team is no doubt feeding him. He vies the military factor that has been selling weapons to dictators as ‘producing military equipment for the protection of their brave soldiers overseas’; no doubt another picture painted by his father which Roman is more than happy to lap up. The next paragraph however, says a lot about Logan.

“It had been the day the terrorist had stepped from the shadows into the light of the cameras to blame his victims in person before they met their end. He’d exposed their alleged crimes against the helpless, suppressed minorities the weapons were used against – lies and exaggerations as his team had assured the young hero – and had finally shown himself to the world. Part of him, at least. Like a true villain, his body had been clad in a skin tight, black suit and his face had been masked from the light of truth and justice. He’d named himself the Utilitarianist” (Whatwashernameagain).

This is Logan’s first personal appearance. A bold move for his career. This is significant for a number of reasons; firstly, it shows yet another step Logan has taken towards his downfall (at least in his humanity). Logan has already killed a man, and obviously plans to do so again, but now he appears in person, obviously confident enough that there would be no one to stop him. Perhaps the power is going to his head. Logan is human after all and that much power tends to corrupt, even when people mean well.

“Yet, at his greatest moment of triumph, a hero rose to meet him. Stepping from the ashes of the detonated building, the Dreamer emerged, leading out the disoriented victims of the Utilitarianist’s terrible plan. Showing his handsome, young face to the camera, unmasked and alight with his passion for the defense of all that was right, he’s faced the other head on and finally gave the just and good Americans a hero to believe in. The time of fear and helplessness was over. He had risen from the dust of his nemesis’ destructive acts to beat him” (Whatwashernameagain).

I will get to Roman’s flashy entrance in a moment. For now, we are still on the subject of Logan. You see, Logan has shown that he has begun to lose himself and his humanity in his work. If he is not careful he will become the very type of person he works so hard to wipe from the Earth. Luckily, someone has come to oppose him, to pull him back from the edge. I have mentioned that Roman is both Logan’s Hope and Humanity and that is true here as well. Roman appears just in time to save what little of Logan’s humanity is left. Perhaps he is a bigger hero than either of them realize.

As for his entrance, the contrast between the two is obvious once more. The over dramatized appearance is nothing if not expected from Roman but fact that him being unmasked is brought to the readers attention while Logan hides behind is own is an indication of not only the good vs. evil dynamic that has been apparent throughout the story but also of Roman’s cockiness.

A battle ensues. The Utilitarianist is far more difficult to defeat than Roman had accounted for and narrowly escapes. Roman is left felling defeated as he considers it a failure. I feel as if this is a fantastic symbolization of the fact that good and evil are a balance. The Utilitarianist which represents Roman’s concept of evil and The Dreamer, representing the concept of good were fairly evenly matched. One didn’t over power the other it was a fair balance.

We see his caring side once more as he mentions his disappointment and what the world deserves. Though we also see the socially imposed concept of ‘masculinity’. “A hero must never show his inner struggles” (Whatwashernameagian). Eva always has a way of bringing out subtle issue inadvertently that astounds me. Society engrains in most men that it is not alright to show your emotions, that they must be contained. I suppose that in special cases such as first responders this is accurate. If you asked an officer or a nurse, or a medic, how they do what they do most would explain something similar to a concept I call ‘a switch’. When faced with a situation in which an officer knows it is best not to react or feel they flip an imaginary switch. This switch controls their emotions. The catch is, that in order for this switch to work properly they need a constant supply of either work or adrenaline; basically, anything that does not allow you to analyze the situation you are in. It is one of the that many police academy’s have such extensive training/drills; that way, you react in the proper manner without thinking. But I will tell you something they don’t tell you… When the day is over, and hours have pasted since they finished washing the blood from their hands or shoes… When their driving home and its quiet… or when their changing into their pajamas… Everything that they saw… Every mistake they made… every life they couldn’t save… Its going to hit and when it does… it hits hard. The switch doesn’t work forever, you see… Its on a timer and when that timer goes off it determines who is strong enough to make it and who isn’t because no body is able to pick up the pieces for you.

Eva is talented enough to paint the subtle switch into her writing though, and I mean no offense in this, I do not expect her to know the severity of what the suppression can do someone… especially someone as kind hearted as Roman. I must applaud her for addressing it however, even if she doesn’t realize she is doing it.

Luckily, Roman’s efforts were rewarded. The mention of the newspaper’s tones changing, interviews being planned for him (though he was instructed on what to say, bringing attention once again to the fact that he his nothing but a puppet at this point). He painted the picture of himself that he was meant to, that he had always wanted to be. His dreams were finally coming true. There was one catch… The dreams he had achieved were based on lies.

“Despite his wish to brag with his father’s great plans and the selfless efforts the other CEOs, lobbyists and republicans had invested, they asked him to never mention the Conglomerate that had created him and steered his actions. The public needed a legend to put their faith in now, they said. Not a bunch of old men bumbling about. Though he felt selfish when he claimed to be acting by himself with nothing but the help of volunteering patriots, he trusted their knowledge more than his own. Though the Dreamer was a great hero, Roman would not forget that he was just a young man trying to be good enough for his father’s love he’d failed to deserve before” (Whatwashernameagain).

Roman isn’t allowed to mention his father, probably because if Roman is discovered for doing these things for his father’s benefit his father can pin it all on him. Yet, once again Roman’s naivety and self-worthlessness is used against him. JFC people! All this boy wants is his Father’s love!!!! That’s it!!! Just give it to him!! Christ!

Roman and Logan face off for the next few months; good and evil dueling to no avail. Though it does mention that Logan does the majority of his crimes over the internet where Roman’s ‘brute force’ doesn’t work; further painting the image of The Dreamer that Logan paints: A dim witted glamour seeking brute… At least the image he wants the world to believe he sees. Roman comments about Logan’s rude evasiveness when it comes to his demands which brings a little light-hearted humor back into the story. It is also quite amusing seeing Roman realize that Logan views him as ‘a fly buzzing about his head’ and being outraged by it.

I was really hoping I would get a lot more done on this one. I was hoping I wouldn’t have to break the Chapter 2 analysis into more than four parts… There is still hope I guess… Anyways, I’m afraid this is where I need to end this portion… I apologize if this was too dark for you. How does the character picture himself/herself? - She doesn’t see or view herself as the legend she is slowly becoming. She’s very humble and feels as though she is at the bottom of the ladder when it comes to anything she does. There is always room for improvement. How do others see him/her? - One of the best Demon Slayers there are out there, many people are fame struck when the come meet her because she is from a long demon slayer that dates back to some of the earliest centries of human culture and society. This causes her and Van to move a lot.

Most valued possession: - The rapier sword that she was gifted too by her father as he died from a fatal wound during a battle with a demon. It is the same rapier sword that she used to kill said demon that murdered her father.

Is he/she motivated by possibility or necessity? - Necessity. She knows that she is needed because there are so few people left on the planet with gifts like hers ((I.e Magical abilities)) How does he/she view the future and/or the past? - Sage thinks there is a grim future for humanity and has little faith in those around her. She tries not to think about the past either but uses it as motivation to keep moving forward. What is his/her philosophy on life and death? - She fears death more than anything, only because she doesn’t know what kind of afterlife she will have. Sage doesn’t think death is the end, and believe there is life beyond death. She wants to live as long as she can, possibly growing old with Van. What kind of energy level do they usually have? Sleepy and depressed. She’s not a bubbly person and is very serious and stoic and quiet.

Does he/she have a temper? Yes but only if you push her to the edge or if she’s been cornered in some way.

Polite or rude? Rude Stingy or generous? Generous Leader or a follower? Leader More happy by themselves or in a group? By herself What is his/her sexual preference/experience/values? - Sage is bisexual, monogamous, and demisexual. Before she married Vanderlinde she dated both men and women. She doesn’t sleep around and find causal sex repulsive ((for her, she doesn’t care what other people do with their sex lives)) -History/Background- - Sage was born from a Japanese mother and a German father. She was born in Japan but her family moved around every few years due to being members of a secret society dedicated to exterminating demons. Her mother is still alive however her father died when she was 17 years old in a fatal battle with a Demon. - She has spent almost her entire life working for a secret society of demon slayers, which she took on as a full-time job after her father died. - Sage has an older half brother named Kael, they share the same mother but a different father. - She received formal schooling through the secret soceity she worked for. She was able to still get her high school education while traveling around the world to slay demons. - She met Vanderlinde when she was 20 years old and after just moving to the United States. Vanderlinde was a priest at the time and Sage had just enrolled in university for a chemistry degree. They quickly fell in love and Sage welcomed Vanderlinde into her secret society with open arms and Vanderlinde happily joined.

He is not a fighter and doesn’t enjoy fighting, he’d rather run away defend himself or those around him. This often leads people to say he is cowardly. How does the character picture himself/herself? - Vanderlinde sees himself as a weak softy who can’t win a single physically fight. He doesn’t have a lot of self-confidence so he doubts himself and his skills way too much. He thinks he a push-over that anyone could walk all over. How do others see him/her? - Many people view Vanderlinde as an incredibly intelligent and kind professor who cares about his student’s education more than anything in the world. He began to question his faith when the Priest he looked up to had passed away. - Around 18 years old Vanderlinde left the orphanage and went on a soul searching journal across the United State. He was homeless during this time as he traveled cross country, drinking, doing drugs and learning about all different types of faith. When he turned 20 he turned back to the Church and became a priest for the next five years. - He met Sage when he was 25, she was 20 at the time. Because she was a pagan witch, Vanderlinde was punished for getting himself involved with her. At the same time, he also got in trouble for researching other religions other than Christianity. He chose to renounce his priesthood and left the church because he did not agree with their rules. After that, Vanderlinde worked towards becoming a professor at the local university where he could freely research and teach others - After he fell in love with Sage, Vanderlinde joined her secret society, more than happy to join a cause he believed in and was willing to fight for.

First Hallowe’en

For Hallowe’en Prompts 2018! Thank you so, so much to the anon who requested this cute lil prompt:

‘Halloween one shot (or whatever you prefer!) with Hopper and Eleven and his wife pretty please! Maybe Eleven’s first Halloween allowed out or something, I’m just dying to see some Hopper family Halloween fluff! 🧡🖤🧡🖤 Thank you!’

El saw one Hallowe’en commercial on TV and now you are doing e v e r y t h i n g.

Pumpkin carving? You’re taking her out to the fields and picking up every one she even vaguely likes and letting her take her time deciding between them. Of course she wants the biggest one, a notion spurred on by Hop insisting you have to have that one.

You’ll carve your chosen pumpkins the night before, a familiar and classic spooky face because they’re a classic, and set them up outside the front door with candles in. El will open the curtains every few minutes just to check they’re still glowing.

You’ll stay up all night finishing her costume because, right down to you tucking her in to bed, she was still undecided as to what she wanted to be.

At one point you just consider making a hybrid of everything and calling it a science experiment gone wrong.

Then she’ll finally decide and you and Hopper will share beers as you work through most of the night to complete the costume because you will NOT allow your girl to go out in something half-assed.

The next day, Hallowe’en celebrations will kick off immediately.

Breakfast will be Eggos with candy sprinkled over them, eaten whilst watching a family-friendly Hallowe’en movie.

El will want to get into her costume straight away so once the film’s over you’ll be getting her into it, quite a feat when she’s practically bouncing from foot to foot.

Then there’ll be more pumpkin carving, followed by baking ‘scary’ treats involving gummy eyeballs, chocolate chip spikes and jelly worms, though most of the supply will have been eaten the night before by Hopper.

After eating half of the treats you’ll box up the leftovers and watch whatever’s spooky themed on TV or what you rented from the video store.

And then it’ll be time: trick or treating time.

Empty bag in one hand, your hand in the other, El will grin from ear to ear as Hopper walks at her other side. She’ll stare at everything, point at everyone and, based on her friends suggestion, insist you go to Loch Nora for the best candy.

Lo and behold, there the boys will be already in their coordinated outfits, bouncing from foot to foot and laughing.

They’ll grin and yell at the sight of the three at you, though their attention will quickly divert to El and her outfit.

She’ll smile as they crowd around and compliment it, swiftly complimenting you and Hopper on your sewing skills before they’ve got their arms around her and are walking up the drive to Loch Nora.

After that, it’ll be all you and Hopper can do to keep up with them.

You’ll slip your hand into his as you stride after the kids, keeping your eyes firmly on them as Hopper mumbles that they’ll be fine, despite his pace matching yours.

Your feet will start to drag a little, though, after the first hour.

“How do kids have so much damn energy.” “It’s all that candy they eat.” “Maybe we should’ve brought out our own supply.” “I did.” “What? And you haven’t been sharing with me?” “Fine, you want one?” “Yes, please, Chief, thank you kindly.”

Another hour or so later, though, long after you and Hopper were convinced they’d have a sugar crash, Hop will announce that it’s time to turn in for the night.

“All right, all right, all right, enough of that,” he’ll grumble as the boys try to convince him otherwise and El pulls the face she’s learned will sometimes get you and Hop to change your minds.

This time, though, as the people you pass start to look slightly older and definitely not in costumes, your minds won’t be changed: it’s the teenagers time to appear.

Once satisfied that the boys’ll be okay after seeing them halfway home to Mike’s house, knowing they’re all staying over there, the three of you will head home.

That’s when the sugar crash will hit.

Carrying El to her room, Hop will set her down and promise her he’ll keep her candy hidden somewhere safe. You’ll help her out of her costume and into her pyjamas, after which she’ll crawl under the covers.

As you do most nights, you and Hopper will read to her, from a spooky book, naturally, though you’ll only make it through half a chapter before she’s asleep, exhausted from the excitement of the day.

Smiling at Hop, both your hearts bursting with love, you’ll gently tuck her in and quietly slip out of the room and to the living room.

Collapsing onto the couch and in to Hopper’s arms, he’ll produce his private candy stash from his pocket and settle it between you.

“What a day.” “What a day.” “... Is a sugar hangover a thing?” “I don’t know. Let’s find out.”

Of Castiel, Superman, and Humanity

Or: Oh to be a fly on the wall while these two sit and chat together...

I just read this great Cas meta here and wanted to write something I’ve been thinking about for a while.

For me it’s a classic example of using something that’s completely alien as a study on humanity. You get this moving toward being more human arc while actually trying to reconnect with the things he loves about his own kind. Cas doesn’t want the angels to go extinct. He doesn’t want to lead them to fix themselves either, he wants to be his own man with his own choices, and his own future.

I’m a big fan of these kinds of arcs. Coming out of the fandoms I have, story arcs that are about questions of humanity, inhumanity and what it means to be somewhere in between fascinate me. (Buffy, Heroes; Smallville; DCU) I’m going to talk about the later because imo Castiel’s arc is very much like some of Superman’s arcs. It also helps that both Supes and Cas are given the sunshine/Jesus sort of symbology about them.

Supes’ heart was always in the right place, but his struggles with his own kind always came courtesy of their sense of superiority. Here were the last survivors of the Kryptonian race, and they felt like it was their role to conquer the human race and take over/rule the planet. Their abilities made them superior, after all. But Supes, who was raised on Earth, views his powers as one part something allowing him to help humanity and one part a burden, because they make him different (a “freak”. As Smallville Clark says at one point “I just want to get through high school”.) It isn’t imo that Supes does actually want to be human any more than Castiel does, or Buffy, or any of the characters of Heroes who struggle with their powers, because they all have the potential to use their powers for good, but they are desperate to fit in as well; some want a home, some want to be normal, and in Cas’ case this nomad just wants somewhere to belong.

But as I say, Castiel and Superman have this thing in common specifically because their own kind become the enemy. And because their own kind are so small in number, Supes (and Cas) have no desire to hurt or kill them, and endeavor to only do enough to escape/convince them to stop/etc. The problem with that is the morality of Kryptonians and Angels who aren’t raised on Earth, who haven’t had a human story of their own, is that convincing them to stop or that there’s another way isn’t something they have a moral understanding of--not really. They just aren’t equipped to understand it from Supes/Cas’ point of view. Consequently, the fight typically goes one sided because Supes is thinking I can’t hurt them, they’re all that’s left.

“For every human you save, we will kill a million more.”

There’s something very tragic about that. It’s like that old adage that you can choose your friends but you’re stuck with your family. In this case, and in Castiel’s, Supes chooses his family too. He can’t avoid the fact that he isn’t human, of course, and it dogs him existentially, but he chooses to be as close to human as he can be, chooses to live a human life, take a human wife, celebrate with his human parents.

So what does this have to do with Cas? Well, you know, Cas has hit a lot of the same storylines that Supes has. He’s been asked to be a warrior for his people, to be a leader, to be everything other than what it always comes back to that he wants to be, and over the years he has given everything - even his life - flown into the sun, questioned why he’s doing these things and what it’s all for, even going through a depression arc of his own. But ultimately - like Castiel - Supes can’t help himself helping people. It’s just who he is.

Supes chooses his family and not his actual blood time and time again. The situation anon mentioned came to a head because Castiel was rejecting Heaven.

And then there’s Dean dropping ‘family’ and ‘team’ and ‘home’ and ‘brother’ into every other sentence these days...

Cas has claimed the boys as his family too. He told them that he loves them. So why does he then accept Heaven’s offer to work with them again back in season 12? Because saying and doing a thing are two different things. (Edit: As @tinkdw reminds me, Cas makes this decision to protect Dean and Sam. It’s a visibly difficult choice for him to make, once again taking the (cosmic) consequences onto his own shoulders). In any case this fight scene in 13x07 is great because we see him doing. He makes his choice and it’s not Heaven. It’s with the boys. It’s as part of TFW, and consequently Cas spends the rest of the episode trying to get back to them (though to be fair he’s been doing exactly that since 13x03)

This is great because when Castiel accepts his place and is able to say outright ‘this is my place’ instead of having it thrown in his face that he doesn’t belong, he will be able to move forward - like Supes does - and deal with the problem of his people being on the brink of extinction, for example. It’s like every battle Supes has with Zod or Lex Luther or anyone else: his otherness is used as a weapon, and ultimately it is his sameness which grounds him and allows him to fight for what he loves and what he believes in. Finally, at some point in the fight, someone threatens something human about Superman, whether it’s his secret identity, or Lois, or the Daily Planet or the Kent Farm or the entire Earth. Whatever it is, Superman then uses his humanity to overcome his enemy. So I can’t hurt them, they’re all that’s left succumbs to you won’t hurt them, they’re all I have. How many times can Castiel’s humanity be highlighted, punctuated or threatened before he accepts it and loves it as part of himself, and cherishes it consequently as something to protect not something to be ashamed of? That, I think, is the ultimate goal here.

So speculation, because it is speculation: that’s where Cas’ storyline is leading: toward humanity and yet not, but mainly toward his acceptance of self. Then he can help fix the angels, help solve the Lucifer problem, help Jack etc. Like I said, he’s so close! He wants to get back to the boys. And look how warm and confident he is when talking to Jack. Cas is just learning where his priorities are, and sparing the angels at great risk to himself is part of that, because honestly it’s what Superman would do.

(And let’s face it, Supes is plenty BAMF when people threaten Ma Kent or Lois Lane, so I don’t think that part of him is going away.)

God I love stories about humanity and found family. Like. Give me all of them. Now.
