The photo above shows George Balanchine as Prince Désiré and Vera Nemtchinova as Princess Aurora in the Diaghilev company's Aurora's Wedding, performed in London, probably in 1925. This was the third act of The Sleeping Beauty, presented on a mixed bill with other ballets. It’s a shock to see Balanchine dancing a classical role; his forté was character dancing.
In case there is any doubt, the cast list shown below confirms that Balanchine danced the prince. There are many other notable dancers in the list, including Alexandra Danilvoa, Alice Nikitina, Anton Dolin, Lubov Tchernicheva, and Stanislas Idzikovsky. There is also one “Nina Devalois,” who was undoubtedly Ninette de Valois, later the founder of the Royal Ballet.
Both photos come from Alistair Macauley’s website. The photo of Balanchine and Nemtchinova was sent to him by the ballet critic Robert Grescovic, and the cast list below by dance historian Andrew Foster via Grescovic. Be sure to read his essay about this. And, while you’re at it, bookmark the site. Macauley is probably the most interesting critic working today, with a great deal of knowledge about ballet history, technique, and the ballet scene of today.
