Istyl (Ist: Endless, immortal; yl: Drow, woman/man)
Content: Reluctant Caretaker, monstrous caretaker, cannibalism,

Protective of him despite that.
160cm (5'3), Age 294,

Was whumped into becoming a priestess of Lolth instead.
Terrified of spiders and necromancy
Anxious and poorly socialized
Kind
Cleric (Death Domain) of Myrkul/Lolth, Level 9
155cm (5'1), age 128
Has a crush on Kelriina and comes to the Zurkhwood Shadow for the opportunity to talk to her. And for the alcohol.
Something of a friendship with Queve. In that he's the only person who shows any interest in how her day/week was and notices if she is injured (hates the feeling of her magic so doesn't heal herself unless absolutely necessary). Doesn't feel as though she can afford to care about anyone else. (Would throw hands no matter how much she hates her magic if she catches him being whumped)
Talfryn Hlazynge (Tal: Love, pain, wound, wounded; fryn: Champion, victor, weapon, weapon of)
Content: Intimate Whumper, Yandere Whumper, Indifferent Whumper, stalking,
Matron mother of House Hlazynge.
Still not over her first love
Has killed hundreds over Kelriina and will do it again.
Married her husband due to his divination magic and her need to have children to solidify her position.
War Domain Cleric of Lolth, Level 20
167cm (5'6), Age 270
Does not care much about the house or Lolth, only about getting Kelriina back.
Was a weak priestess, Kelriina/Alydra was the only person who cared for her/believed in her. Developed her ambition to give her love the world and couldn't leave that behind to run away with her.
Has no idea where Kelriina is. Lashing out more and more as a result.
Being manipulated into messing with people Rhylin doesn't like. (People who caught him cheating, people who have divination magic)
Rhylinidia'Elaug (Rhyl: Eye, moon, spy; inidia: Secret, wall, warden; Elaug: Drow, mage, power)
Content: Domestic Abuse, Cheating, manipulative whumpee, smart whumpee,
Goes by Rhylin
Divination Wizard, Level 11
Formerly a daughter of house Eilsani in another city. Left when he saw the future and saw that House Eilsani would fall. Went to Menzoberranzan to start a new life.
His official backstory is that he is the second son of House Eilsani, living in the shadow of his older brother, the house wizard. (Technically true, he was a wizard but he wasn't considered a son)
Uses the spell alter self to change his sex when he needs to sleep with Talfryn (only happens for procreation because Talfryn is a lesbian and he wants to be as far away from her as possible because she is abusive).
Cheats on Talfryn regularly because if he's going to live in fear of execution and torture, then he may as well have done something to deserve it. (Uses the spell for that as well)
Wears the fluffy undercoat because it's comfy and hides his figure.
Looking for a spell to transition permanently (Some Level 9 spells might do the trick) so he doesn't have to live with the constant fear of being discovered and executed for heresy.
Goes to the Zurkhwood Shadow in search of hookups. Lyn'Vic hates his guts because Lyn'Vic also wants to hook up with people. Kelriina knows who he is and is worried he will put her in danger. He has no idea who she is.
Ereldril has a crush on him. Does not feel the same way about her at this point, but is trying to recruit her into helping him escape to the surface/the upper parts of the underdark/anywhere that doesn't have lolthian drow.
Has befriended Queve and has suspicions regarding his heritage. Hopes to use that to coax or coerce him into helping him escape. Queve is aware of this because he may be uneducated but he isn't stupid. However, Rhylin is the nicest person he's met so far and has no bad intentions for once they escape, so he doesn't do anything about it (Similar to his dynamic with Spirral, but not abusive). Not interested in leaving with him though, because he doesn't feel as though he deserves better.
Spirral is onto him. Rhylin is aware of this but willing to take the risk.
168cm (5'6), Age 153

Healing (aka why Luamice doesn't heal herself unless she's literally on her deathbed)
Luamice's power was originally granted to her by Myrkul, but once she was discovered, she was forced to convert to following Lolth through years of abuse. This is an open secret among the priestesses of her house, House Myund (My: Honored of; und: the spider's kiss), who will not let her forget it.

Queve art
The main protagonist/whumpee of 'The Zurkhwood Shadow'

He's the bar's only server, cleaner and errand boy. All of his bosses (whumpers) are dickheads, to a certain extent.
Queve's relationships with the rest of the cast.
Lyn'Vic: Chef (terrible at it, Queve is the only one who will continuously subject himself to his cooking, cause he's had worse)
He's also one of those 'It's just a prank bro' types. He pranks everyone except Kelriina, but his pranks involve destroying or damaging people's stuff and creating situations where Queve needs to do more work/risk getting injured. Because he's a sadistic asshole. No he will not pay Queve, he already provides him with a roof over his head. No Queve cannot take a day off due to the injuries Lyn'Vic and Ereldril cause. He's replaceable. Hell, he's got some weird infection too. Lyn'Vic is putting himself at risk to help Queve. Queve actually being comfortable for a few minutes? He thinks the fuck not.
Kelriina: Minstrel/Carpenter (Lazy as all hell.)
She ignores Queve, but she does derive amusement from his suffering. Occasionally, she'll manipulate things to put Queve in the path of an annoyed or bored Lyn'Vic or Ereldril, when things are getting boring. That aside, she wants a quiet life.
Ereldril: Bouncer (Drinks behind the bar when she's on duty)
The one most likely to injure Queve when he annoys her, or when she wants to hit something or whatever. Thinks he should sleep outside. He might be contagious. She'll order him, Lyn'Vic and Spirril around, but Queve is the only one who actually has to listen to her, Kelriina usually intervenes when it's one of the others.
Spirril: Bartender, Alcohol supplier (The only passable thing about this Lolthdamned bar. Seriously, Kelriina never plays her music, Ereldril is wasted on the job and also a huge bully, Lyn'Vic is a terrible chef and person, and Queve is overworked, ill, usually injured and has no idea what he's doing)
Spirril is a carewhumper in denial. He usually delegates (ie. pushes the things he doesn't want to do on) to Queve and shouts at him when he asks for instructions that make sense. He does provide instructions afterwards, which makes him Queve's favorite. He does the most to insure Queve gets basic necessities like food, baths, clean clothes, water, sleep, but that's mostly because he doesn't want to deal with the inconvenience it causes him. Eventually, it just became his job, which he is furious about. This makes him yell at and guilt trip Queve. At some point, he figures out that Queve imprinted on him and decides to use that to his advantage, becoming more of an intimate carewhumper. Queve is aware of this but doesn't really care.
Istyl: Braeryn born drow. (*Redacted for spoiler reasons*) (Caretaker (mid))
Queve's first love, doesn't reciprocate those feelings. Unusually caring (for a drow) towards Queve, at least until he made Queve leave. Queve knows the reason but is in denial about it and generally suppressing it.
Luamice: Low ranking priestess from a low ranking house (having a crisis of faith)
Becomes a regular at the Zurkhwood Shadow after befriending Queve. Also a whumpee but with different whumpers.
#queve#The Zurkhwood Shadow#drow#drow oc#whump#multiple whumpers#carewhumper#implied unreliable narrator#queve doesn't know if he's crazy#but at this point he wouldn't be surprised#spirril is so going to have an existential crisis when he figures out that he likes queve#it's not going to make him less of a git#might make him worse#nonhuman whumpee

I am a Failure

Recently, I have been contemplating failure and its spiritual dimensions. In large part, this is because failure’s counterpart, success, is such a strange thing to pin down. I think Daniel Berrigan was onto something when he referred to success as being a weasel word and horribly American. But this recent contemplation of mine is also because, by all accounts, Jesus of Nazareth was a failure as well. Certainly, he had the makings of a successful person, but in the end, he died scandalized and humiliated on a Roman Cross.
As I was recently reminded at a gathering of Lutherans, many are certainly happy to celebrate Jesus becoming a failure for us, but those qualities that brought him to a Roman cross seem to be overlooked for the systematic nature of Paul’s letters. At times, I am not so sure what to make of this dynamic, because when Jesus’ words are referenced, they are just as quickly taken out of context.
It might seem strange that I am writing about failure, given my background as a pastor and professor with a Ph.D. I think I would be considered a “success” by some. However, in a very real sense, I don’t know what to do with such a judgment. Not because I am against being considered a success, but because there is so much more to me than just these things. There are many places where I might be deemed a failure. I resigned from a reputable pastoral position in part because of interpersonal dynamics, I struggle with OCD, I can certainly worry about the most ridiculous things, and I can be harsh and impatient. My successes can all too easily cover up my failures or, in another very real sense, my humanity. However, what strikes me through all my experiences is that it is in the failures and the struggles that the gold is found. After all, Christians believe that one man’s failure is what saves us from our sins. Â
Recently, I read a great interview with theologian William T. Cavanaugh concerning success and failure. In the interview, Cavanaugh explains how, when it comes to positions of power and our desire for them, we rarely ask or consider how the position might change us. Rather, we often view it in the opposite direction, with a very individualistic lens, on how we can change the world through our position. I thought this was such a powerful insight, as we tend to approach the world around us in such ways when, in all actuality, the world around us influences us far more than we influence it. And really, wasn’t that the struggle of Jesus of Nazareth, not succumbing to the influence of the world? Satan tempted him with the very things that make for a successful person: power, prestige, and security, and certainly, no cross. Peter rebuked him over all his cross talk. And certainly had Jesus been more agreeable, he could have found a seat at the table of his enemies, the Pharisees. Yet, the ultimate symbol of failure lay ahead of him for all to see. I suppose we can say that such is what happens when one does not seek success, but instead faithfulness to the ways of God – failure.
