some chen bin / ep2 observations

hello. today i’m putting ep2 under a microscope. 👍

I’m going to argue that Chen Bin was probably not directly controlled by red-eyes in the discussion scene, especially after handing Lu Guang the phone.

assumption: the glowing eyes are only for the audience, as no one has pointed them out so far (unless I'm forgetting).

Which means the show has to work around giving the audience more info than the characters -- a great example of them doing that is Liu Min in the dark room (red eyes in a red scene), but it’ll be hard to always pull off natural obscuring.

And what’s interesting to me is that... they didn’t really try to obscure CB all that much? So it made me wonder about the implications of that.

So, afaik what happened was:

Qian Jin (green haired dude) got the photo from his home for red-eyes

At some point, CB switched the phones (his and Liu Min’s)

CB gave the phone to LG.

Then CB vanished to yeet out a window.

I'm assuming he was controlled for 2) & 4). Assuming he didn't do 2) right in the room with them, it must have happened at some point during/between all of the hospital room scenes. Because the call QJ has with CB is before QJ hands red-eyes the photo and that call was while CXS was changing, so he couldn’t have done 2) (under control, at least) until the hospital room scenes.

Still, assuming 2) happened before the red-eyes ability discussion scene, we have a lot of far shots of him with his eyes seemingly blocked in (not the same as lineart, but not 1:1 his actual color tbf), implying to me that he was not directly controlled in this scene - but was at some point prior (to switch the phones).

So, red-eyes seemingly controlled him more than once.

Which, for me, opens a ton of questions:

Assuming CB switched the phone out a while before he handed it to LG, did he not notice it was his while handing it over?

if it was shortly before handing it over, why would red-eyes stop the control for such a short timeframe?

how did they know when to possess CB again to do 4)?

do they not have the 1-use-per-photo limitation that our MCs (allegedly) have? or did they have another photo? (Did they get the lockscreen photo while he was controlling him to switch the phones, perhaps?)

Or... is there something entirely different going on? Like some sort of hypnosis? Some freaky puppeteer or voodoo stuff with the plushies?!!

I'm half joking, but he really is quiet in that scene. He doesn't talk/discuss anything, no close-ups and just hands over the phone when he's told (looking kinda dead inside while doing so, too lol).

(could of course be because he’s controlled - and who knows, maybe the lack of close ups is their way of obscuring his eye color, but tbh in comparison to the dark room scene that seems kind of... lackluster.)

I doubt it’d be something other than control, considering red-eyes was actively given a photo - but maybe we’re also being tricked with the assumption that this red-eyes is the person controlling people; considering their natural eye color is a lot more direct than CXS and LG, which almost makes me suspicious of it.

I’ll stop throwing darts at a wall now, but I do hope that my limit observation OR the lack of CB substance in that scene will somehow be relevant in the future :D

Or this may all be the ramblings of a crazy person, we shall see.

It would be either my copy of So Long a Letter by Mariama Bâ or the Eye of Fatma pendant that my friend gave me when I was thirteen. They’re not worth anything in terms of actual money, but they were given to me by people I care about.

What’s your dream job?

I would’ve loved to be a translator, but it’s one of those things where the publishing world in Paris is such a microcosm that you really can’t get a job without pistonnage (familiar way of saying nepotism).

Best compliment you ever received?

Someone told me that my story and writing drew them in so much that they forget these are just characters, and that’s definitely the nicest thing anyone has ever said about my writing^^

Well, this was quite the season finale. The wait for season 3 will blow. More spoilers.

I'm not that surprised by Lu Guang turning out to be a time traveler who wants to save Cheng Xiaoshi despite time paradoxes. Like, the overprotective behavior, the supposed wisdom beyond his actual age, and the apparent experience with time travel made it obvious. And would messing with the supposed immutable node of death cause a time paradox?

It's interesting that the Cheng Xiaoshi in that flashback was wearing his season 1 jacket. If the timeline of the other universe matches this one, does that mean he might have originally died during events of season 1? It doesn't seem that he'd be wearing this jacket again, as I think he might have trashed it in season 2 opener. Wonder if he was the original person that got stabbed in the photo studio confrontation (but that's spitballing).

Of additional interest: the imagery in the opening that implied that only one of them can survive. But well, let's just enjoy this little found family's survival for now. Surely season 3 won't be even more emotionally devastating at all, right? And does Qiao Ling now have super empathy?

Also, wonder what the hat guy's objective is. He talked about fate etc, so potential time traveler? Very vague. Also, pouring one out for Tian Chen bc ultimately, guess he ended up a pawn of someone else. First he was wielded by a toxic parent for full "stay together for the kids" points, then a fake dad, now this so-called friend. Man, he's a rather pitiful antagonist in a way. Seeing him dump the cell phone with Xixi on the lockscreen made me tear up tbh.

Satu tahun dari sekarang, gua nggak tahu gua ada dimana, lagi ngapain, atau mau kemana abis ini. Aneh ya? Orang lain selalu beranggapan ketika kita udah memasuki usia 20-an kita sudah figure out everything, udah punya tujuan, udah tahu jalan, dan udah punya gambaran soal masa depan. Ketika lu nggak bisa jawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan begitu, orang kemudian bakal berpikir kalo lu adalah pribadi yang ignorant dan bakal berakhir di klub madesu-alias perkumpulan orang-orang yang masa depannya suram. Asumsi ini kayanya kalo diperdebatkan nggak bakal ada ujungnya, makanya kalo ada yang ngomongin masa depan ke gua, biasanya gua nyengir aja sebelum menggeser arah pembicaraan ke topik lain yang lebih menarik.

Kalau boleh jujur, gua sendiri nggak pernah tahu jawaban dari pertanyaan-pertanyaan itu. Percaya nggak, kalo gua bilang akhir masa-masa SMA gua dulu banyak nangisnya? Hampir tiap waktu gua habiskan dengan bertengkar sama orang tua, karena beliau pengen gua jadi dokter, sementara gua merasa udah nggak sanggup lagi jalan di saintek. Kalo emang mau pindah ke soshum, ayah pengennya gua masuk hukum, tapi masih gua tolak karena deep down in my heart, I know that's not what I want. Perdebatan tentang ini berlangsung lama banget sampe ada waktu dimana gua mulai mempertimbangkan gap year sebagai pilihan. Tapi kemudian gua mulai menemukan titik terang. Gua memutuskan untuk mendekati bidang ilmu yang selama ini beliau minati, yaitu komunikasi. Buat pertama kalinya, kita berdua akhirnya mencapai agreement. Pilihan pertama gua jatuh ke UNPAD, selain karena kakak gua juga kuliah di UNPAD, jurusan-jurusan komunikasi UNPAD punya fakultas sendiri, nggak gabung sama fakultas lain. Perjuangan gua mengejar mankom akhirnya dimulai dari situ. Gua belajar siang malam, di sekolah, di bimbel, bahkan pulang ke rumah pun gua masih belajar. Ketika gua akhirnya diliburkan karena covid, waktu gua di rumah juga dipakenya buat belajar. Di sela-sela waktu belajar, gua nggak sengaja denger ada kakak kelas gua yang diterima di Telkom dengan beasiswa penuh dan tertarik buat ikut program yang sama. Waktu itu, gua nggak lulus, tapi orang tua gua menyarankan untuk daftar jalur reguler buat jaga-jaga. Gua ikutin saran beliau, dan akhirnya lulus di jalur reguler dengan jurusan Digital PR sebagai pilihan pertama. Tapi gua tetap belajar, soalnya toh waktu itu emang ada pernyataan kalau uang masuk bisa dikembalikan asal kita lulus SBMPTN. Apalagi ketika lu dapet support penuh dari orang tua rasanya belajar bisa jadi sesuatu yang dinikmati. Dan karena kita sekarang udah ada di sisi koin yang sama, orang tua jadi gua sering ngeshare berita-berita soal world class university dan ngomongin betapa kerennya gua kalo kuliah disitu. Gua seneng sih, tapi dalam hati keinginan gua buat ke kelas naik odong-odong tuh masih membara banget. Jadi pelan-pelan doanya gua revisi dikit, "Ya Allah, tolong arahkan aku ke jalan yang terbaik. Kalau memang jalannya di Nangor, tolong UTBKnya diluluskan. Tapi kalo jodohnya di Buah Batu, tolong rezekinya dilancarkan."

Ternyata gua jodohnya sama Tayo. Tapi bukan bis biru yang punya mata dan bisa ngobrol sama penumpangnya. Tayo yang ini warnanya merah dan suka muter-muter di kampus Bojongsoang. Seneng nggak? Seneng banget. Gua seneng walaupun di saat yang sama gua harus ikhlas berpisah dan belajar move on dari kampus yang udah beberapa bulan terakhir jadi lockscreen gua. Tapi gua yakin Tuhan selalu ngasih gua jalan yang terbaik. Buktinya apa? Gua suka. Kalau mau hiperbola, gua bakal bilang jurusan ini udah bikin gua jatuh cinta. Sejauh ini, gua nggak pernah terlalu kesusahan untuk memahami pelajarannya, gua merasa nyaman dengan dosennya, dan gua juga nggak merasa terbebani dengan tugas-tugasnya. Bonusnya, di kampus ini, gua dapet temen-temen paling baik sedunia. Lucu ya? Padahal baru beberapa bulan sebelumnya gua pengen menghilang aja karena capek ribut terus perkara masa depan gua yang terus menerus dikontrol orang tua. Memang, kehidupan kuliah nggak selamanya indah, kadang juga ada capeknya, takutnya, marahnya, bahkan ada nangis-nangisnya. Tapi gua menikmati semua prosesnya. Dari sini, gua belajar kalau DUIT itu segalanya. Dengan Doa, Usaha, Ikhtiar dan Tawakkal, gua jadi punya bekal keyakinan buat melangkah ke masa depan yang penuh dengan ketidakpastian. Makanya gua nggak pernah menetapkan sebuah jawaban ketika ditanya gua nanti besar mau jadi apa. Karena yang mau gua lakukan sekarang adalah belajar. Gua mau belajar mengenal gua diri dan lingkungan gua lebih baik lagi, gua mau belajar menggali potensi gua lebih dalam lagi, dan gua mau belajar mengeksplorasi hal-hal baru yang mungkin bisa membuka kesempatan baru buat gua di masa depan. Ketika nanti saatnya tiba, gua sebagai manusia cukup merencanakan dan memberikan yang terbaik, sisanya biar Tuhan yang menentukan.
