Why Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated? . . Indian intervention in the Sri Lankan Civil War saw a reversal of Indian foreign policy and the large scale horrors to Sri Lankan Tamils by the IPKF(Indian Peace Keeping Forces). IPKF killed Innocent Srilankan Tamils and did lot of atrocities in Eelam and Rajiv Gandhi asked LTTE(Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) to surrender all their weapons and after this Lankan army brutally killed Tamils again. This made LTTE Supremo Prabhakaran angry and he took revenge. Another big reason was the Indo-Sri lanka Accord of 1987. Parbhakaran was totally against this accord. In an interview Rajiv Gandhi said he would send the IPKF in Sri lanka again if he comes in the power again. He also defended his decision to sign India Sri Lanka peace accord. So that's why LTTE decided to assassinate him. Dhanu, a woman suicide-bomber mixed in the crowd in an election rally tries to get close to Rajiv and garlands him and then bends down to touch his feet. As he in turn bends to raise her up, she triggers the bomb. The Bomb blast takes place and Rajiv Gandhi got killed instantly. This incident took place on 21st May 1991 at Sriperumbudur near Tamil Nadu capital Chennai. . . #today " The Sri Lankan Civil War " The war which we will never forget, the war that shook the whole world. A Civil War was fought in Sri Lanka from 1983 to 2009 which can never be forgotten. On a pleasant day as today on 23 July 1983, there was an intermittent insurgency against the government by the ' Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ' (the LTTE) (Tamil Tigers). They fought to create an independent Tamil state known as Tamil Eelam in the north & east of the country. After a 26-year Military Campaign, the Sri Lankan Military defeated the Tamil Tigers on 18 May 2009, bringing the civil war to an end by killing of LTTE Leader ' Vellupillai Prabhakaran '.
