A Young Keyblade Master Who Commands the Darkness

Riku

"I believe in you, Sora. You won't give up."

A young man who cares deeply for his friends and is Sora's best friend and good rival. Though he succumbed to the Darkness due to his immaturity* in the past, he grew through his long journey, and now has a heart with the strength to embrace the Darkness within himself.

Though he inherited the power to become a true keyblade wielder, in order to ascertain whether or not he, who had once succumbed to Darkness, was worthy of such a title, he attempted the Mark of Mastery Exam. He saved Sora from Master Xehanort's scheme, and was given the title of an admirable Keyblade Master. Preparing for the decisive battle with Master Xehanort, he and the King head to the Realm of Darkness in order to find Aqua, a keyblade wielder who has been missing for about 10 years.

POINT - A Promise from His Childhood Days that Still Remains in His Heart

About 10 years ago, Riku met Terra, a keyblade wielder who came to Destiny Islands from the outside world, and from him was accepted for the Keyblade Inheritance Ceremony. At that time, he exchanged a promise with Terra to "not tell anyone about today," and Riku stubbornly stuck to it. So he never brought the topic up with Sora and the others, but as this event kick started his dream to travel to the outside world, the promise he made to Terra was embedded deep within Riku's heart. Incidentally, though Sora was nearby during the Keyblade Inheritance Ceremony, Sora doesn't remember those days all that well.

*Translation Note: This word means “inexperienced” as well. I went with immaturity over inexperienced though, because I feel that more closely reflects KH1 Riku. It also highlights how far he has come since then and just how much he has matured.
