BRACING FOR FALLOUT – Today is expected to be an emotional one as hundreds of workers spend their last day on the job – casualties of an International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme. The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) last night confirmed it was bracing for the reaction by those receiving their pink slips as the Government embarks on the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT), an IMF-approved plan. The country was forewarned of the pending fallout, most recently on Sunday in a national address by Prime Minister Mia Mottley, who said the Government would use a scapel rather than the axe approach. On Tuesday, Government’s senior technical advisor, Dr Kevin Greenidge, who is on secondment from the IMF, held a press conference to further explain the process that involved 1 500 workers, 800 of them from central Government and the remainder from the state-owned enterprises. LEGAL BIND – The Mia Mottley administration is being warned that if it does not get its job cuts procedures right, it could end up facing expensive lawsuits, Democratic Labour Party (DLP) President Verla De Peiza has warned. De Peiza sought to offer her party’s perspective on Government’s plans to send home 1,500 public workers as part of the International Monetary Fund-supported Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme. De Peiza expressed concern that the Government seemed not to have learned from the ruling of the Employment Rights Tribunal in the matter of the hundreds of National Conservation Commission (NCC) workers who were retrenched by the previous DLP administration. “It is good that you have retraining . . . . We did that as well through the Ministry of Labour . . . that’s fine. But when you make these cuts . . . and you make them quickly. There was no build up. I haven’t seen any application of Section (31) of the Employment Rights Act. I have not seen any application of the judgement coming out of the NCC litigation before the Employment Rights Tribunal,” the DLP President told Barbados TODAY. Section 31 of the employment rights law refers to the process of consultation required before making workers redundant. “I would expect, that if they don’t do it according to the book, that we are going to have another round of litigation which is also expensive,” De Peiza, who is an attorney at law added. Noting that her former Government tried to retrench workers the “gentle way”, De Peiza told Barbados TODAYthe pending job cuts cannot address any challenges that exist. “If you are hiving the jobs at the bottom, but you are packing on the jobs at the top, you don’t actually achieve anything . . . it can’t work. So when you have a bloated Cabinet . . . and it’s not just about the ministers . . . each one will require a permanent secretary, staffing, office space, office furniture, using utilities…and then you, along with that, start hiving off the jobs at the bottom? You are not actually addressing the issue,” the political leader contended. In its decision in the NCC case handed down on July 15, 2016, the Employment Rights Tribunal referred to Section 31(4) of the Employment Rights Act which said “where it is contemplated that the employer’s workforce will be “reduced by ten per cent or any other significant number”, the employer is required to engage carry out the consultations with the employee or trade union, providing a “written statement of the reasons for and other particulars of the dismissal”. The Tribunal again cited the Act in stating how the consultations should be carried out either with the affected workers or their representative. “The consultations shall be in respect of the proposed method of selecting the employees who are to be dismissed; the proposed method of carrying out the dismissals, with due regard to any agreed procedure, including the period over which the dismissals are to take place; and any measures that the employer might be able to take to find alternative employment for those who are to be dismissed, and to mitigate for them the adverse effects of the dismissals.” (BT)

ANOTHER DOWNGRADE FROM S&P – Barbados has suffered another credit rating downgrade, but the long climb back from “junk” territory has started. That bittersweet news came from international credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P). On Wednesday, S&P Global Ratings lowered its issue-level ratings on Barbados’ local currency issues outstanding to “D” (default) from “CC” on ten issues of Government debentures worth a combined $575 million. These instruments had maturity dates ranging from October 31, 2018 to October to June 30, 2026. S&P said the rating on them was reduced to default in anticipation of the completed debt exchange. At the same time, S&P affirmed its “SD/SD” (selective default) long- and short-term foreign and local currency sovereign credit ratings on Barbados, and its “D” (default) ratings on Barbados’ rated foreign-currency issues. It also maintained its “CC” transfer and convertibility assessment on the country. (WN)

BANKER: EARLY DEBT TALK BEST – If you can’t service your debt, go to your bank now. Barbados Bankers’ Association president Donna Wellington offered this advice to Barbadians struggling with their finances as Government looks to cut nearly 1 500 jobs as a part of its Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) programme. Speaking at a NATION Talkback On The Barbados Economy public forum on Wednesday night at the Central Bank of Barbados complex, The City, Wellington said: “Whilst we are going to be very much encouraging folks to be responsible at this time, we do want to encourage early engagement. “So if there is a situation where folks find themselves challenged . . . whenever you are challenged, speak to us as soon as possible. “The likelihood is that if you come early, before things get out of hand, there is something that can be done to assist,” she added. FTC ORDERS SOL TO REIMBURSE CUSTOMERS – The Fair Trading Commission, on its own initiative, has completed an investigation which was launched in September 2017 after receiving two consumer queries relating to the purchase of SOL 100 lb Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders. In each circumstance, the consumers alleged that they made a prepayment for LPG cylinders prior to a legislated price increase. However, their cylinders were delivered after the price increases came into effect. The consumers subsequently discovered that they were charged the difference between the price they paid and the increased price, as per SOL’s Terms and Conditions of Service which stated: “Prices billed, will be prices prevailing on the date of delivery”. After completing its investigation into this matter, the Commission determined that this clause may be an unfair contract term and/or misleading and/or deceptive conduct, which is contrary to the Consumer Protection Act, CAP. 326D. As a result, SOL was directed to remove the said contract term and SOL has complied with the Commission’s request. Furthermore, the Commission has directed SOL to reimburse all customers who would have prepaid for an LPG gas cylinder but were asked to pay an increase in price because of the above mentioned contract term. This process is to be completed on or before December 17th2018. (BGIS)

MINISTER, OFFICIALS TOUR IDB ROAD FIX PROJECT – Overcast conditions and a slight drizzle met officials from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Ministry of Transport Works and Maintenance as they toured a major capital works project which began on the nation’s busiest highway. Contractor C.O Williams Construction Limited is set to begin milling and paving along the ABC Highway in the area of the Norman Niles Roundabout at Haggatt Hall, where workmen have been cleaning and clearing the road edges. Minister in the Ministry of Transport Works and Maintenance Peter Phillips, IDB Representative Juan Carlos De la Hoz Viñas witnessed initial work on the Road Rehabilitation and Improving Connectivity of Road Infrastructure Project. The first phase involves repaving the stretch of the ABC Highway between the Norman Niles Roundabout to the Clyde Walcott Roundabout and from West Road to the Frank Worrell Roundabout. Work is to continue to December and then recommence in the new year. The $50 million project will see sections of the highway being milled and paved and the drainage being upgraded. The project was officially launched on October 5 by Minister of Transport Works and Maintenance Dr William Duguid in a ceremony in Wanstead, St. Michael. (BT)

SYMMONDS’ PLEA – Minister of Tourism and International Transport Kerrie Symmonds has pleaded with international media to help Barbados and other Caribbean states spread the message of the threat these climate change frontline nations face. Symmonds was speaking as British, Canadian, American journalists joined their Barbadian colleagues to be presented awards for feature writing on the destination at the Barbados Tourism Media Awards on Wednesday at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre. He told the gathering while the Caribbean was the home to substantial investment, tremendous amount of commercial activity, heritage and culture, it was also home for the West Indian civilization, which he said was under threat due to the effects of climate change. “We are a civilization that is facing tremendous peril and existential threat. It is an existential threat [of] which we are, quite frankly, almost powerless to confront. It is in this regard that I enlist tonight, your support,” he told the award-winning journalists. Symmonds noted research that cited China, the US and the European Union as the top three producers of dangerous greenhouse gases. Stating that the Caribbean’s collective 500,000 metric tonnes of greenhouse gas production per year paled in comparison to the billions of metric tonnes produced by the industrialized countries, Symmonds said it was clear the Caribbean was not a polluter but there was a “disproportionate consequential effect on us because of the pollution that leads to global warming”. The tourism minister argued that a climatic event such as a powerful hurricane may only cause “dislocation” or “some degree of inconvenience” in parts of a state in the US, but the same disaster impacting a Caribbean island “can decimate the civilization on that island”. “What I say to you is not just said glibly . . . recent history has thought us this,” he said, as he recalled the devastation caused by Hurricanes Maria and Irma in several islands last year and the destruction of Grenada by Hurricane Ivan in 2004. “So what I am speaking to you about is an existential threat, it is a threat to the very survival of all that we are celebrating tonight because without these islands being able to do that which we do – our investment, our culture, our heritage, all that you have written about, all that you have helped the world to understand about us – will come to nothing because it can all be destroyed within the space of a 24-hour,” explained Symmonds. “My entreaty to you therefore as members of the press and people who I see as developmental partners, is that you join us in the way in which you have joined with us to help put us in the forefront of people’s understanding and appetite for pleasure and the experiential side of the tourism industry, and that you now go on the journey with us to awaken the capitals of the world to the threat that exist to the survival of these tiny islands in the Caribbean,” he said. “I am asking you to raise your voices as voices for change. The pen as I said is mightier than the sword. I am asking you to use the pen and the lens of the camera to help tell the story in the corridors of power, from Washington to London and beyond, so that people will come to understand that serious and concrete policy discussion must take place if we are not to imperil the survival prospects of these islands and all of us who live on them.” At the end of last month, just hours after Tropical Storm Kirk dumped over nine inches of rain on Barbados, causing severe flooding in some areas, Prime Minister Mia Mottley made an impassioned plea at the United Nations for more assistance to be given to small island developing states to help them better prepare for natural disasters, many of which are likely prompted by climate change. ‘UP STANDARDS GAME FOR EXPORT’ – Entrepreneurs need to raise quality standards if they want to export, Minister of Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Commerce Dwight Sutherland has suggested. The minister has called for stricter national standards to push for the development and marketability of small business products and services. He said having a national quality infrastructure model of standards, metrology, testing and certification and accreditation has now become a necessity that will serve micro, small and medium enterprises well. “Entrepreneurs must now focus on standards to enhance their competitiveness. International standards will provide new market access to entrepreneurs by removing these trade barriers,” he added. The Commerce Minister suggested the development and enforcement of domestic and international standards in both services and products were key to integrating the country into the world trade system. Sutherland was attending a press launch of Services Weekend Barbados 2018, hosted by the Barbados Coalition of Service Industries (BCSI). He announced that Government was forming a Financial Literacy Bureau to support rising businesses and entrepreneurs. He stated that the Bureau will offer training to entrepreneurs and mentorship and also seek to create a competitive advantage for those businesses. Sutherland urged key stakeholders to not offer their support to entrepreneurs by providing them with capital but also impart them with “financial literacy, mentorship and market intelligence”. “Succeeding as an entrepreneur is all about identifying a need and finding a way to supply that need. Finding a niche in the service industry even in the face of recent economic challenges and pending job cuts is going to be critical to your survival,” said the minister for entrepreneurship. Executive director of the BCSI, Graham Clarke, stressed on the need for further interest and exploration of the information communication and technology (ICT) sector. He suggested the entrepreneurs capitalize on the era of digital technology for export. “We need to be pushing our entrepreneurs to create, to produce and not just to consume,” Clarke emphasized. “When it comes to digital technology, I feel as though we are in the category of late adopters or sometimes we are lagging behind. In terms of cellphone use . . . we are up in the ranks in the Caribbean and Latin America. “We have the hardware but we need to do more in terms of using the software to drive that hardware technology to help transform in the way we do business. E-commerce needs to be pushed and we need those platforms to help us to do business more efficiently,” Clarke declared. While unveiling the October issue of the services firm coalition’s magazine, The Exporter, which focuses on culture, creativity and climate change, as he launched the Services Weekend. From Friday November 16 and Saturday November 17, it will include the technology forum, dubbed #BIMTECH, a health and wellness expo and a concert, Firefly: From Obscurity to the Limelight. (BT)

US HOSTS LEGAL ASSISTANCE WORKSHOP – Earlier this week the United States Department of State, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), hosted an advanced Mutual Legal Assistance Workshop for regional attorneys in Barbados. This workshop follows the first Mutual Legal Assistance Seminar, held in Barbados in April this year. Building effective central authorities for mutual legal assistance in asset recovery matters is essential to ensuring successful outcomes in these cases. The transnational nature of serious organised crime poses major challenges for national justice systems. The close geographical proximity of Eastern Caribbean countries makes cross-border crime even more prevalent. It is vital that regional partners afford each other the widest measure of assistance permitted by their domestic law. This workshop provided an opportunity for the specific points of contact for mutual legal assistance in each jurisdiction to further their knowledge of mutual legal assistance legislation and best practice. The workshop also provided the specific points of contact with an opportunity to use the tools that have been created after the last seminar, including the new regional mutual legal assistance website and handbook. ECLAC DISASTER TRAINING FOR CUBA TARGETS ENVIRONMENT EXPERTS – Environment experts, from Cuba are now better equipped to evaluate the impact of disasters using Damage and Loss Assessment (DaLA) methodology developed by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). This following a DaLA training workshop conducted by a team from ECLAC’s subregional headquarters for the Caribbean from October 11 to 13 in Havana. The training targeted representatives from Cuba’s Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment, as well as other professionals working in disaster analysis and planning units in correlated areas such as water, sanitation and agriculture. The course introduced the multi-sector approach of the DaLA Methodology to evaluate the impact of disaster using economic estimates of the damages, losses and additional costs and with a strong focus on the environmental effects of disasters. The environmental focus of the workshop provided a valuable opportunity for ECLAC to share experiences in assessing the impacts of disasters on ecosystems and environmental services. It also offered an excellent opportunity to discuss how environmental issues can be included in other sectors, and how disaster assessments can be used to guide a more environmentally sustainable development planning. The training was facilitated by Dr Omar Bello, Coordinator of ECLAC Caribbean’s Sustainable Development Unit, with support from Associate Environmental Affairs Officer, Luciana Meira, ECLAC Mexico’s Economic Affairs Officer, Leda Peralta, and an expert on risk management in water, sanitation and infrastructure, José Balliesteros. The event follows similar trainings in several Caribbean and Latin America countries such as The Bahamas, Belize and more recently, Guatemala. (WN)

TWO PEOPLE COLLAPSE – Reports reaching NATIONNEWS are that two people have collapsed in separate incidents. A woman is reported to have collapsed and died at Sheraton Mall in Christ Church, while a man is said to have collapsed at Millie Ifill Fish Market at Weston, St James. His condition is unknown at this time. More details as they come to hand. (WN)

UPDATE: WOMAN DIES AT SHERATON – Police have identified the woman who collapsed earlier this morning at Sheraton Mall in Christ Church. She is Roseann Janice Niles, 47, of Butlers Avenue, Gall Hill, Christ Church, who collapsed around 10:45 this morning in Abed’s and died on the spot. At the time she was conducting business with one of her siblings. The store is currently closed and her body has been removed under police escort. (WN)

ABEDS EXTENDS CONDOLENCES – The management of Abed’s has expressed shock, and extended deepest condolences to family and loved ones, after a customer collapsed and died today, Thursday, October 18, while at the store’s branch at Sheraton Mall. Managing Director, Eddy Abed said he was extremely sorry to hear of the customer’s passing. “We were very sorry to hear of the sudden passing of a customer at our Sheraton store, and would like to express our sincere condolences to the family. This was difficult for everyone involved, especially the family of the deceased, and our staff and management on duty at Sheraton. Abed also apologised to customers affected by any interruption of service due to the incident, and thanked them for their patience and understanding. (WN)

JUDGE AND JURY – A 33-year-old man accused of having eight firearms and over 1,200 rounds of ammunition has been committed to stand trial at the High Court. Magistrate Douglas Frederick transferred the cases against Adesina Kijana Crichlow, of Apartment No. 6 Roumaika Court, Dayrells Road, Christ Church and Brydens Avenue, Brittons Hill, St Michael today when he appeared in the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court. Crichlow is accused of possession of a firearm and two rounds of ammunition on January 6 without valid licences. He is further alleged on January 8 to have had six firearms as well as 371 rounds of ammunition without the necessary licences and on January 10 – one firearm; 199 rounds of .223 ammunition; 143 rounds of .45 ammunition; 110 rounds of .375 ammunition; two rounds of .38 ammunition; 29 rounds of .32 ammunition; 17 rounds of .25 ammunition; and 333 rounds of 7.62 ammunition all without the necessary licences. The accused, who has been on remand at HMP Dodds since January 13, was not required to plead to the indictable charges at the Magistrate’s Court and is now waiting his day in the continuous criminal assizes of the High Court. He will, however, reappear before the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court on November 15 when three drug charges – possession, possession with intent to supply and trafficking of cannabis – which were allegedly committed on January 6 will continue. BLACK ROCK TEENAGER BAILED – A 17-year-old was granted his freedom today after spending 28 days on remand at HMP Dodds. Terron Antonio Bridgeman, of Ashdeane Village, Black Rock, St Michael who previously pleaded guilty to assaulting police constable Jovica Headley in the execution of his duty on September 18 but denied robbing Rashone Joseph of $30 on September 17, was granted $3,000 bail this morning. He was released after Station Sergeant Carrison Henry told Magistrate Douglas Frederick the prosecution was not renewing its objections to bail. The accused teen who secured his freedom when his surety was accepted will return to the District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court on January 28, 2019. (BT)

THIEF HANDED OVER TO IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS – Guyanese Kevin Anthony Layne was today handed over to Immigration officials after his attorney Ezra Alleyne told a Bridgetown Magistrate he was not able to reimburse his victim. The 27-year-old man, who lives at School Road, Hindsbury Road, St Michael, recently pleaded guilty to entering the home of Marcent Skeete as a trespasser between February 10 and 11 and stealing a $1,600 television and $180 DVD player. Layne has been on remand since September 17. “My client is anxious to have the matter finished because he is not comfortable with where he is now and he is not in a position to pay a fine. If he is convicted, seriously reprimanded and discharged then that would suit the ends of justice,” Alleyne said as he made submissions to Magistrate Douglas Frederick today in relation to sentencing. The magistrate then sentenced Layne to nine months in prison suspended for one year and handed him over to Immigration “for their consideration”. (BT)

WELCH SNATCHES THREE YEARS IN PRISON – Bangle snatcher Shamar Renaldo Welch, of Rockhampton Road, Grazettes, St Michael, has been sentenced to three years in prison. The sentence imposed earlier this week by Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant was for nine counts of theft of bangles and other jewellery worth thousands of dollars. The offences were committed between March and June 2016. “I want to say sorry . . . right now I looking to better myself. The drugs, cocaine is what has me like this . . . and I don’t want to waste my life. I would like that when I get out [of prison] that I get into Verdun House. “I know that I did wrong but I would like you to be lenient in sentencing,” Welch who is already serving time at HMP Dodds told Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sergeant. DIABETES HELPS ACCUSED WITH BAIL – The man accused of stabbing a woman at Country Park Towers, St Michael, on September 17, was granted $3,000 bail today following strong arguments from his attorney Mohia Ma’at. Shahid Ricardo Stephen, of Reece Land, Bush Hall Yard Gap, St Michael had been on remand at HMP Dodds for the last 28 days. The 22-year-old is facing the indictable charge of entering the home of Akeilia Bradshaw as a trespasser on the aforementioned date and inflicting serious bodily harm on her while he was armed with a knife. When he reappeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick today Ma’at stated that his client had “knocked on death’s door” since his incarceration. Providing the magistrate with a daily record of his client’s sugar levels over the time he had been on remand, Ma’at submitted that Stephen’s “levels had dropped several times and he had to be hospitalized on three different occasions”. “He even lost a tooth since being in prison . . . one of his sugar levels was recorded at 1.8 and that is knocking at death’s door and he has knocked three times since he was in prison,” Ma’at said. Magistrate Frederick granted the accused bail following Ma’at’s bail application and a warning that he stays away from the complainant. Stephen will return before the No. 1 District ‘A’ Magistrate’s Court on March 5. (BT)

SPORT OFF TRACK – It’s time to go back to the drawing board. This is the view of president of the Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) Sandra Osborne. In fact, she believes serious examination must take place in order to improve the performances of Barbadian athletes on the international stage. “In the course of our recent planning at the BOA, we have come to the conclusion that we need to go back to the drawing board to analyse how we can improve our athletes’ performances, and how the BOA can play a more active and participatory role than just providing financial support,” she said. Osborne was speaking to NATIONSPORT at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games which concluded Wednesday night. “What has happened in the last number of years is that Barbados’ performance has actually dropped in terms of the medals and positions that we have been able to achieve,” she said. CHANGES IN PETROLEUM PRICES – Barbadians will see a change in petroleum prices from midnight. The price of gasoline will decrease while the prices of diesel and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) will increase. The retail price of gasoline will fall from $2.98 to $2.96 a litre, a decrease of two cents. The price of diesel will increase by four cents from $2.17 to $2.21 per litre, while the price of kerosene remains unchanged at $1.13 per litre. The new retail price of the 100 lb cylinder of LPG will move from $147.04 to $153.85. The 25 lb cylinder will cost $43.56, up from $41.86, while the price of the 22 lb cylinder will be $38.50, up from $37. The price of the 20 lb cylinder moves from $33.64 to $35. These amount to increases of $6.81, $1.70, $1.50 and $1.36 respectively. The adjustments in retail prices are due solely to changes in the CIF (cost, insurance, freight) of these refined products. SERIOUS NEGLECT THROUGHOUT COUNTRY – Chairman of the Barbados Labour Party (BLP) George Payne has accused the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) of gross neglect. Addressing member of the media during a canvass of the St Michael West constituency with the party’s caretaker Joe Atherley, Payne said that “the serious neglect of this administration” could be seen throughout communities across the island. He pointed to the state of the road in the White Hill, St Andrew community, as one example of abandonment by the Government. “The road has washed away entirely, the people are partly marooned, the roads down near to Belleplaine side, that seems to be getting a little unstable and if that goes, it means that we would definitely have a marooned situation,” reasoned Payne. Meantime, Atherley said the DLP has halted the economic and social development of people. He cited the Urban Transfer of Title programme, which was created under the BLP. “We had started the process of empowering people through ownership, this Government has virtually brought that to a standstill,” he said. Atherley, who represented the St Michael West constituency for two terms, 1999 to 2008, described the frustrations of residents, recalling how Barbadians have been heavily taxed. “Yes, we are fed up, but we are fed up with the fact that this Government continues to run Barbados into the ground.” He called on Barbadians to join the Opposition’s ‘March of Disgust’ to be held on March 11, saying: “All of us are pained and saddened and therefore our disgust is to be expressed in a march against the incompetence of a Government.” (BT)

QEH APPEAL TO AMBULANCE STAFF – A home for the Barbados Ambulance Service is where the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s (QEH) heart still is. But the country’s main medical facility is asking frustrated emergency ambulance personnel to bear with them in the wake of another move to a temporary facility, this time to a Barbados Investment and Development Corporation-owned building in Wildey, St Michael. The move from the previous site at Jemmotts Lane was precipitated by environmental issues. The QEH director of support services, Louise Bobb, is asking the employees to show a little more patience, since the goal remained for the hospital to rebuild a permanent home at the old Enmore complex, near the hospital. Last week, emergency medical technicians and paramedics bemoaned the distance of the new facility from the QEH, especially since they had to go off their new facility to perform certain logistics, like keeping the ambulances clean. According to statistics from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), where the vast majority of deliveries take place, 283 babies were born to mothers between 13 and 19 years old last year. It was the lowest number recorded at the hospital since 1980 and represented 11.86 per cent of total births, which arealso declining consistently (see table). Former Barbados Family Planning Association (BFPA) director George Griffith noted that the actual teen birth rates would even be lower if 18- and 19-year-olds were not counted among the statistics. Pointing out that those two ages accounted for the bulk of pregnancies, he argued that they were really adults and should not be recorded as teens. (DN)

JAMAICAN ATTORNEY DISBARRED & ORDERED TO PAY $110MILLION - A well-known attorney, who is also a senior member of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), Harold Brady, has been disbarred from practicing in the country. The decision that was made on Saturday by the disciplinary committee of the General Legal Council (GLC), resulted in Brady being struck from the list of licensed legal practitioners in Jamaica. Brady was disbarred after he was found guilty of professional misconduct last week in relation to allegations that he misappropriated funds belonging to his client – the state-owned entity – the Factories Corporation of Jamaica. Brady, who represented himself at the hearing, has strongly denied the allegations. Brady was ordered to pay restitution to the complainants in a sum exceeding J$110 million. He is among several attorneys now under investigation by the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council. The Council is also investigating more than 500 complaints filed against attorneys by clients. (BT)

Road fatality at Westmoreland, St James – A 48-year-old man is Barbados’ latest road fatality. He was reportedly attempting to cross the road at Westmoreland, St James tonight in the company of his five-year-old son when he was struck by a grey Nissan Sentra motor vehicle. The accident occurred around 10 p.m., just a stone’s throw from the victim’s home. Police are yet to reveal the name of the victim or that of his son, who was transported to hospital by ambulance for medical treatment. His condition is unknown at this stage. The driver of the Nissan vehicle was a 19-year-old male, who was also not identified by police. Up to 11 p.m., the victim’s body was still on the scene. His death brings to 12 the number of road fatalities in Barbados so far this year — two more than the ten which occurred for all of last year. (BT)

MARIJUANA FOUND IN BARRELS TWO WOMEN CHARGED – Members of the Drug Squad have arrested and charged two women in connection with a number of drug-related offences committed last Thursday and Friday. Sally Anne Smith, 51, of Crusher Site Road, Prospect, St James, was charged with possession of cannabis, trafficking of cannabis, possession with intent to supply cannabis and importation of cannabis. These offences were committed on Thursday at Freight Handling Services Freightliner, Brighton, St Michael. Meanwhile, 25-year-old Latoya Toni Broomes of Atlantic View, Gemswick, St Philip was charged with possession of cannabis, trafficking of cannabis, possession of cannabis with intent to supply and importation of cannabis. These offences were committed on Friday, also at Freight Handling Services Freightliner. Police said Smith made arrangements with another person to have the cannabis concealed in a barrel of foodstuff imported into Barbados. During an inspection of the barrel by customs officers, six transparent wrapped packages containing cannabis were discovered concealed in six bottles of peanut butter. The police were informed and Smith was subsequently arrested and charged. The cannabis weighed six pounds with an estimated street value of $24, 000. Police said Broomes also made arrangements with someone to have the cannabis concealed in a barrel of foodstuff imported into Barbados. During an inspection of the barrel, cannabis was discovered concealed in six cans of fruit cocktail. The police were informed and Broomes was subsequently arrested and charged. The cannabis weighed nine pounds with an estimated street value $36, 000. Smith and Broomes appeared in the District ‘A’ Court this weekend where they both pleaded guilty to all of the charges. They were both referred to the Drug Treatment Court. (BT)

MAN SHOT BEHIND GLENDAIRY PRISON – Police are investigating a shooting incident which occurred at Station Hill, St Michael this afternoon, leaving one man injured. Lawmen are yet to release the name of the victim. However, they said that officers responded to a report sometime after 1 p.m. Sunday of gunshots being fired behind the old Glendairy prison. On arrival in the area, officers encountered a male suspect who was armed with a firearm. The man, who was shot by the police, was transported by ambulance to the state-run QEH for medical attention. CRIME STOPPERS CONCERNED ABOUT GUN CRIMES - CRIME STOPPERS BARBADOS is concerned about the number of gun-related crimes that have recently taken place in Barbados and is encouraging the public to use its anonymous reporting platform to report any information on the perpetrators of such crimes. In a recent statement, chairman of the non-profit organisation Samuel Skinner stated Barbadians are becoming more comfortable in providing tips to the Crime Stoppers given the dramatic increase in tips received from 323 in 2015 to 424 in 2016; an increase of 31%. According to Skinner, Crime Stoppers has received 69 tips for the two-month period January to February 2017, compared to 54 tips received for the same period in 2016. “From the information received by Crime Stoppers, the Royal Barbados Police Force has been able to effect 11 arrests so far for the year,” stated Skinner. “This type of success is a clear indication that the Crime Stoppers system is working, and we wish to encourage more persons with information on the perpetrators of criminal activities to use our system to report what they know,” continued Skinner. The chairman said his organisation is currently reaching out to the business sector to support various community based interventions and projects which are being conducted in close collaboration with the Royal Barbados Police Force.
