Legend and his Nameless Daemon

Ok I'm up now and since I didn't receive any ask for the LU Daemon AU I'm gonna arbitrarily start with Legend for no reason.

His Daemon is a Pink Rabbit, I'm not going to change their inner self if they already a canon one. The Daemon doesn't have a name (I'll come back to it later) so he will be refered to as Hero in this (that my default nickname for the Links's Daemon). His Human Body still has the same nickname we know (Legend, Veteran, etc) but if they talk to the Pair then put the nicknames in a plural form (Legends, Veterans, etc).

Hero is settled. It happened after Koholint, that's when Legends knew that all those quest have let a permanent mark on him. And it was far from the last.

Hero has two main side. First he's cold toward strangers. He doesn't trust them to be competent or to not be against him for whatever reason. He's very wary and jumpy and don't form bond easely. He wants to be alone and not be bothered or talked to by anyone. That's why, despite having separated nickname for the Human and Daemon to be addressed indepedently being the social norm in Legend's Hyrule, Hero chose to be Nameless and tell everyone to address his Human part with their Name. This led to many scene like this :

"You chose to be Nameless ? Ridiculous, how would we address you ?"

"Don't address me, leave me alone, forget my existence you'll be doing me a favor"

Hero hates adventures and travelling. He wishes his Human would settle down in his house with Ravio but he's dismissed each time he bringing up the subject. Hero hate adventuring.

But he loves saving people. And we're discovering his soft side. The side that made him only take the form of fluffy animal before he was settled. Hero cares a lot and all the mistrust and danger in the world won't stoping him for trying to help someone in need. And once he starting trusting you and caring for you ? Then he's a big soft boy. He'll give praise without shame, he let the others pet him whenever they want or need it (he can make himself tangible without Legend permission), he hates when they're underappreciate themself it makes him angry, he say out loud the soft thoughts Human Legend hide behind snark without restraint (it drives the human crazy btw). He's a worrywart and will always be worried for those he cares about. He's more overprotective than Twilight ! Once he's got close to someone and they know each other name he ask that someone to give him a nickname so that they can address him. He kept those nickname close to his heart and never forget or confuse them. You have :

Legend - Hibiscus (given after he settled the old one didn't fit anymore),

Wild - Cherry,

Hyrule - Hug,

Sky - Softie,

Four - Flame,

Twilight - Sunrise,

Honestly Legend had been shocked with how quickly Hibiscus warmed up to everyone but they're their past and future self what do you want ?

Legend and Hero relationship isn't the greatest. Like I said Hero shamelessly reveals Legend deep thoughts that he wanted hidden, plus Hero rather harsh on Legend and is always critizing him. When they fight Legend has the tendencies to grab Hero in a way that could be painful, hurt him a little or at the very least is uncomfortable (like grabing him by the ears or the back of his neck). But that's about all for now and those issues aren't even that rare. Hero isn't the most tactile Daemon but he's always close to Legend's legs and at the end of the day Hero will be on Legend torso while he sleeps and get as little sleep as possible and standing guard to wake him up if monster arrive.

Last thing : the Dark World Curse is to switch the Human and Daemon form. So you had a grumpy pink bunny Legend (or other fluffy animal he wasn't settled yet in alttp) and his Hylian Daemon whose equally as grumpy as him about this changement but don't blame anyone for this except Legend. Twilight's Curses Pendant supposedely do the same.

Botw Daemon AU- Other characters

Urbosa

- Urbosa’s daemon is a cheetah named Bast.

- Bast only speaks to Urbosa for the most part; she will be cordial to other daemons but completely ignores anyone else.

- With one exception; Zelda’s Mother’s daemon.

- When she visited the Queen their daemons would be together as much as possible. This was especially unusual because the Queen’s dart frog was poisonous for most other daemons. He never harmed Bast, though.

- When Urbosa uses lightning all her fur goes up on end and her eyes briefly turn green.

Riju

- Riju’s daemon is an emperor penguin named Acario.

- The Gerudo were not overjoyed about this; it isn’t easy to take their leader seriously with a big waddling bird in tow.

- Riju and Acario just think his form is cute and awesome.

- He enjoys sliding in the desert sands after her when she’s sand seal riding.

Beedle

- A fox called Charostlecles.

- He doesn’t use a nickname for some reason.

- One of his greatest sorrows in life is that she is not, in fact, a beetle.

- She looks at passing travellers with puppy dog eyes and implores them to buy from them. Sometimes Beedle tells her to be more quiet; she’s disturbing the customers!

- He gets her to steal beetles from travellers unwilling to sell sometimes; she is an excellent thief.

Paya

- Paya hasn’t settled yet, which is extremely unusual considered her age. Both are self conscious about this fact. His name is Pereltonius, Toni for short.

- Her daemon takes small forms, usually hiding away from the world. Neither look forward to the day he becomes a bird and is forced to be somewhat visible.

- If he feels that someone is really upsetting Paya he will tell them to go away. This is the only time he really gets bigger than a mouse.

Impa

- Impa has a shrike daemon called Myranatalinus.

- She was a late settler, and when it finally happened it caused quite a stir.

- Amongst the Sheikah a bird daemon is better than anything else, but many found Myrana’s shape disturbing. Shrikes are terrifying birds after all.

- Having a somewhat intimidating daemon helps her move up the ranks and eventually become Elder.

- It did give her awareness of what being mistreated for a daemon form is like, and tries to overcome these biases.

Dorian

- A fly called Tecticus.

- The reason why he joined the Yiga Clan was in part because he was so ashamed that he wanted her removed.

- He eventually realised that he wanted out and left, but his wife was killed in the process. Out of fear for his daughters he continued feeding information to them.

- He constantly worries about either Koko or Cottla settling as something that isn’t a bird.

Pikango

- His daemon is a male elephant called Hronur.

- Hronur is extremely small, about the size of the now extinct dwarf elephants.

- Because of his daemons form he was treated as an outcast by his family and left Kakariko for decades, travelling as an artist. He’s treated with suspicion when he returns because he isn’t remembered anymore and his daemon  is strange.

- Hronur sometimes butts into conversations to remind Pikango of things.

Cado

- A cucco called Curetulen. Her settling was the happiest day of his life.

- Curetulen often acts like a normal cucco instead of a daemon, and doesn’t follow him around. This has caused some people to touch her by accident.

Purah

-A magpie called Glicavfels.

- Constantly poking around at everything and caws loudly whenever she is excited or has a good idea.

- She often sends him out to gather information. Sometimes he goes as far as Kakariko or Akkala to contact Impa or Robbie.

- When the deaging experiment went wrong she stayed a magpie, but now looks much younger.

Robbie

- A raven called Corfunyus and looks

- Generally silent and exasperated at the world.

- The voice of reason.

Rhoam

- As mentioned before, an eagle owl. No-one is sure what her name is and she appears to be mute.

- They rarely touch; this has led to rumours that they’re seperated, but that isn’t true. They just lost their closeness after the Queen died.

Kilton

- His daemon still changes shape, although he claims she was settled as a cat before he performed dangerous experiments on themselves. Her name is unknown.

- She watches each of his visiters with unnerving, bulging yellow eyes, sometimes giggling or whispering something to Kilton.

- She could theroectically change into anything, but is mostly a cat or hyena. She looks as strange as her master.

Magda (AKA the flower lady)

- Her daemon is a hummingbird called Ptanbtplo. No-one can pronounce this.

- He attacks anyone who dares damage the flowers via pecking.

Breath of the Wild Daemon!AU

Ok so! I’m working on an actual fic using these concepts and this version of the BotW world, but I thought that maybe some of you might be interested in my ideas so here! I’m putting pretty much everything under a readmore, because this is copypasted from my planning document, which got very long and doesn’t even have anything to do with the plot of what I’m writing ^^’

Link’s daemon is a Hyrule Field Mouse (lol get it) named Firielore (fih-REE-ehl-ohr), Firi for short. From Fi, Ciela, and Farore. They settled early, when Link first drew the Master Sword. Historically, the Hero most often settles as a wolf, but other forms are not unheard of and he isn’t the first Hero to settle as something more unassuming.

Pre-Calamity, most people, even other knights, thought that Link and Firi’s behavior was odd. Neither of them ever spoke (Link is mute, but Firi can speak and just doesn’t), and Firi was just as stoic and inexpressive as her human. As a mouse daemon, she was always on his person, usually on his left shoulder as was uniform for smaller daemons of knights and soldiers, but was rarely seen out of that position except for when she would turn to increase their field of view or leave him briefly to scout stealthily around corners/over boulders and the like.

Relating to the issues that make him canonically selectively mute, Link’s lack of self preservation re: his Duty translated to Firi as well. Things like stretching their bond too far for too long for the sake of getting the scope of a situation or enemy, but not letting the pain show externally where someone else might be brought to their knees with it. Other things like Firi using herself as a distraction, running from Link’s arm to the Moblin’s to divide its attention and leaving them both exposed to give Link a chance to strike. The monsters don’t know the difference between hitting a daemon vs. its Hylian, and that makes the contact less bad, but not insignificant. There were rumors throughout the castle that Link and Firi had been separated traumatically or that the Master Sword allowed them the distance, but both are untrue- their bond was no different than any other Hylian, they just pushed it further in the name of duty.

Link and Firi’s character development (in the memories) is subtle just like in canon. Through the Yiga attack she is always on Link’s left shoulder, even when they and Zelda are just traveling. On the hill with the Silent Princess is the first time she’s not there- she hops off his shoulder when he crawls forward to look at the flower and she moves closer to it. After Zelda’s failure at the Spring of Power, Firi touches Zelda’s daemon to comfort him, just for a moment.

Firi had and has (Impa gave it to them with the Champion’s Tunic) a small set of custom armor for protection, but rarely wore/wears it; she’s fast enough that any attack that would possibly hit her in battle would probably kill Link as well. On the battlefield she would either deftly scurry around Link and warn him silently about attacks from behind, or slip into a small armored pouch that existed to protect her in one-on-one combat unless an opportunity to assist presented itself. In the present, she doesn’t participate in battle the same way she would 100 years ago (with the aggressive distraction and the like), moreso providing Link extra ears and eyes in a fight.

Post-Calamity, she is considerably more physically active, but she still doesn’t speak out loud- except very occasionally to Link himself. I.e when they first wake up in the Shrine of Resurrection, Link hears Zelda’s voice first and opens his eyes to Firi sitting on his chest, also saying his name. However, she’s still a very quiet daemon, especially considering that Link communicates via signing and it would be considered acceptable for her to talk for him. In Post-Calamity Hyrule she’s more outgoing towards other daemons and will greet them physically if appropriate.

Zelda’s daemon, Hylayrune (hih-LAE-roon), Layrune or Rune for short, is unsettled until the moment she awakens her power, when he settles as a Snowcoat Fox (Real life equivalent: Arctic Fox). His name comes from Hylia (all Zeldas daemons’ names start with ‘Hy’), (La)Nayru, Hyrule, and rune/ruin. Before he settled, he took atypical forms for the sacred princess’ daemon that were more representative of Zelda’s scientific pursuits, such as bugs (usually a bee), frogs, and lizards. Almost always, the Princess settles as a bird of prey (often owl, occasionally eagle or loftwing), or in some cases a small dragon (as the three dragons Dinraal, Farosh, and Naydra are said to be the daemons of the three Goddesses, with Hylia’s being most often depicted as a golden dragon or occasionally a huge, golden Loftwing).

Rune’s late settling, and his preferred forms before settling, were a huge cause of anxiety for him, Zelda, and their father. This is all tied into their self-doubt about awakening their sealing power and being able to fulfill her duty as the sacred princess, but it’s also personal for the King. His daemon is a Mountain Crow, which though known to be clever and resourceful are seen as a bad omen, even a curse, within Hyrule. It puts stress on his regime, and the idea that his daughter prefers frogs and lizards over forms that have become symbolic of the royal family and the sealing power is deeply troubling. Rune takes “appropriate” forms only at official appearances and ceremonies, and even then, usually a more wild hawk over an owl, eagle, or dragon.

Other characters:

The Old Man/King: Mountain Crow (real life equivalent: Raven)

Urbosa: Islander Hawk (with kind of a more desert coloration. real life equivalent: Harris Hawk)

Riju: Unsettled, usually a Sand Seal bc they love them

Impa: Blue-Winged Heron (real life equivalent: Great/Little Blue Heron).

Beedle: Hylian Retriever (A golden one, fight me)

Other random stuff/past Links:

- The Princess traditionally settles when she first unlocks/uses her powers, and the Hero traditionally settles when he draws the Master Sword. There are some exceptions, like the Hero of Twilight being old enough to have already been settled, and the Links in games without the Master Sword settling in other ways.

-Hero of Time and Twilight both had Wolf daemons. Their wolf forms are kind of a combination of them and their daemons’ appearances. Time had a lighter colored wolf and Twilight had a darker colored wolf.

    - BUT Hero of Time’s daemon is usually a mouse as a child, when he’s unsettled, alluding to past and future heroes.

    - The mouse thing (here and for the Hero of the Wild) comes less from personality and more from the feeling of facing an enormous dungeon boss as Link, like a mouse about to fight a lion.

-Both the Hero of Wind and Four Swords/Minish Cap Link also had mouse daemons.

    - For Wind this is because of the mobility he needed re: moving on a ship (also kind of like a ship rat? Disclaimer: I’ve never played WW)

    - For Four Swords/Minish this is because he shrinks down and is pretty much the same size as his daemon (she’d have to shrink a little bit too but not as much) and I just think that’d be really cute

-I’m not sure what Skyward Sword!Link’s daemon would be. Not a loftwing because it isn’t possible for anyone but a Goddess or a sacred princess (with Goddess blood) to settle as one, but I’ve never played SS so I can’t really say. It would have to be small enough to ride on a loftwing with him, or a bird of some sort- probably all of the people in Skyloft settled like that, now that I think about it. Maybe a beetle?

-Link from the original games probably has a wolf daemon, as well as LttP/LBW Link.

- Spirit Tracks!Link has a white dove daemon and she rides on his head like the birds in the game and its adorable

-Ganondorf always has a boar daemon in any iteration. When he transforms into Ganon they merge, similar to Wolf Link, but grotesquely instead of dissolving together in Twilight.

-Only the Hylians, Sheikah, and Gerudo have daemons

    -The Sheikah have mostly same-sex daemons, with opposite-sex daemons being about as rare as same-sex daemons among the Hylians and Gerudo. No one’s quite sure why.

    -The Zora have sort of a connection to their jewelry and weapons, but not necessarily a physical one. More of a literal “put your soul into your craft” type thing, which is why Zora armor is the way it is and most of the Zora have specialized livelihoods like sculpting and smithing.

    -The Gorons don’t have a physical Thing, they have a special brotherhood with other Gorons. It’s why you rarely see Gorons traveling too far from Goron City, and almost never alone. They can be alone, like a Zora can be without their craft and affects, but it negatively effects them after a while.

    -The Rito have their songs; though not all of them are musically inclined, its a cultural thing and not a physical requirement. Kass would be considered very spiritually aware and expressive, whereas Revali would not, but a non-musician Rito doesn’t suffer for it. There would only be an issue if there were no bards among the entire Rito race, and the songs faded from memory.

digimon or loz au for the wip game?

Last one before bed, I'll do some more in the morning. Since these are actually both easy to explain and i don't think i have an excerpt I'm willing to share, I'll do both.

Digimon AU

Anyone else remember the end of Digimon Adventure 02 where everyone gets Digimon partners? (No? Just me? Okay.) This AU takes that and grabs the different functions of the Digivices through many seasons and plugs it into the MHA universe. Everyone has a Quirk, everyone has a Digimon partner and a Digivice. I guess it's daemon au adjacent?

I keep flipping between "Ozuku has a Digimon but no Quirk" and "Izuku doesn't have a digimon partner but has a Digivice from Xros Wars and just has to build up his army, starting with one from All Might's army because he also has a Xros Wars Digivice." The dilemma of which to pick is actually making it very difficult to start so i have a folder of world building instead.

If anyone has opinions or input on which sounds more interesting to you, I'd love to hear it!

LoZ AU

This one is a bit complicated, has a few charts for it and uh, 3 completely different versions of chapter one because i can't make up my goddamn mind on how exactly to start.

So it was inspired by a post i found .... precovid so it feels like ancient history now, that was something to the effect of you could put Link in any shounen plot and he would ruin it. Which is not what i did here, but i took the example that they gave for MHA where One for All is, in fact, the Triforce of Power.

(Thinking about it, AfO!Quirk might be a better contender for the Triforce of Power, but that requires so much outline shuffling and well, I'll get into it.)

So in this au, select characters are reincarnated LoZ characters from across the games. Izuku himself is WW!Link reincarnated. In this au, Izuku and Bakugo believe it's his quirk, so they don't really have as much of a falling out. It's a dumb quirk, according to Bakugo, but Izuku inherits Link's battle sense so it's not all bad.

Features include

any time a reincarnated person touches another for the first time, they exchange brief memories from that past life.

Oc side friend who gets into the UA business department who is Ravio. His quirk is to animate small constructs so he has his bird friend.

Mirio is OoT!Link from a different timeline than Izuku. Izuku holds a bit of resentment on behalf of his past life until they can talk it out.

In one scrapped outline, during the fight with the sludge villain, Izuku picks up a pipe and spears the sludge villain in the eye with it.

Edit, because i forgot, this au includes a full triforce swap. A Zelda incarnation gets Courage, and Ganondorf gets Wisdom.

Heart and Home by lc2l (Les Mis; Enjolras/Grantaire; 97k; In an alternate Paris, werewolves occupy the majority of the ruling classes, making and adjusting policy to suit their interests. The punishments for a human attacking a werewolf can be brutal, unless they have the protection of a wolf pack.How this translates to 'claim Grantaire as your mate to get him out of prison' is something Enjolras is still trying to get his head around, but he's never been one to give up on a cause even when it's sleeping on his sofa.)

Everyone breaks off their conversations and swivels to stare at him. At him, and at the baby carrier that he's got hooked over one arm.)

They're a dull black that it takes him a moment to realize must be chalkboard paint, because near the tables there are words and doodles, and all over, even the erased sections are stained with faint colored marks like the walls have soulmarks.)

Ok so my mind is creating a Daemon AU (you know when your soul lives beside you in the form of an animal ?) right now for the Linked Universe. Who wants me to share ?

I haven’t talked about my BOTW daemon AU in months, but heres another overlong infodump:

- The Yiga Clan usually don’t have daemons. Part of the initiation for a footsoldier is having the connection between your daemon and your body cut. The daemon is stored in a sort of archive deep in the Hideout- even after intercision killing the daemon is too much for most people to live through.

- To be allowed to train as a Blademaster, the Yiga must kill their daemon. The logic is that only people tough and devoted to the cause enough are able to survive killing their other half. It still kills most of the candidates, though.

- There are a few exceptions. Because people who’ve gone through intercision have poorer judgement and little free will, the leader of the Yiga Clan doesn’t have their daemon cut. This is a secret, and they maintain this by choosing a child who has settled with a form that can be easily hidden (initiation into the Yiga Clan isn’t done until they’re teenagers because intercision carries a high risk of death).

-Unfortunately Master Kohga tried to seperate his daemon like a Sheikah would... and it didn’t really work because he didn’t know what he was doing. Their bond isn’t completely severed, but it’s wonky and weak compared to what it was before. His powers have been affected greatly.

- The other exception are spies like Dorian. Spies with no daemons will become too conspicous quickly, which means they get to stay. There’s an expectation that they’ll retire eventually and get an intercision, however.

- Yiga Clan members are great at disguising as long as they don’t stay in one place for too long. They’re dull and easy to forget because of their lack of daemon. Looking too close gives people a deep feeling of unease, which is when they like to attack.

- 10,000 years ago, a small group of Sheikah experimented with intercision, believeing going without a daemon would make them wiser and more powerful. It was one of the reasons the King of Hyrule exiled them. The new Yiga Clan preserved this technology and pursured it. In the BOTW era they believe severing the daemon severs your connection to Hylia and makes one closer to Ganon.

I’ve been thinking a bit more about my BOTW daemon AU. Here’s something about the great taboo (touching the daemons of others).

First Post

- All races with daemons know instinctively to not touch daemons. It’s also hammered into them from a young age.

- In their strongholds touching a daemon can earn the offender a fine at best, and a jail sentence at worst. Hylians often put touchers in the pillories marked with a purple ribbon. Sometimes they’ve been collected by the Guard a few hours later only to be found dead.

- For Gerudo, touching some else’s daemon is considered grounds for a duel, which means most potential perpetrators won’t do it.

- The taboo is rarely broken by accident; daemons are very good at avoiding people even if they’re large, and people generally give them a wide berth. Hyrule has been built with streets wide enough to avoid breaking the taboo. If it still happens, it usually isn’t punished, although it can cause extreme feelings of guilt if it wasn’t on purpose.

- Touching a daemon is an excruciating experience for the victims. It’s been described as having the most private part of you breached and tainted, and the touch can linger for days afterwords. Perpetrators have described the feeling of breaking the taboo as being addictive and empowering.

- Hurting a daemon carries an immediate death sentence. The victim feels their own daemon’s pain and often becomes extremely traumatised from the experience.

- Rito, Goron and Zora need to be taught about the taboo, but are extremely careful to not break it; it’s considered one of the most important things to keep in mind while travelling anywhere with Gerudo or Hylians.

- The taboo can be used for great evil- every race has dabbled in using daemons for torture. One popular method the Gerudo used were cells that a prisoner and their daemon could be trapped in seperately. These cells are still in use, but the wall between prisoner and daemon was knocked down after it became clear both would die after a few weeks of constant emotional duress.

- Hylians sometimes hurt the daemons of prisoners to extract confessions.

- These torture methods are considered inhumane, but rumour has it they’re still used.

I’m not as into BOTW as I used to be, but I’ve been thinking about the place of Dust in my daemon AU

The Golden Goddesses, and Hylia, are all beings made out of Dust- p much like the angels in HDM.

Din, Nayru and Farore helped direct the early world, encouraging the evolution of sentient species and helping them where they could. However, they ended up encouraging dangerous experiments with the fabric of reality and Demise came into being.

Hylia showed up around then, created by the Goddesses to from Dust to fight the nothingness. Around the same time daemons showed up and the other Goddesses stopped communicating entirely. They’re believed to have left the world of Hyrule to find a way to end the draining of Dust for once and for all. Meanwhile, Hylia and her chosen Hero battle Ganon in an endless cycle so Dust doesn’t end up being utterly sucked away.

Alethiometers exist; they’re used by fortune tellers and scholars to learn secret truths and prophecies. The prophecy Rhoam heard from the fortune teller was gleaned from an alethiometer. Unfortunately the fortune teller couldn’t figure out everything it was trying to tell him, which might’ve lessened the blow of the Calamity 100 years ago, or prevented it entirely.

Daemon AU: Zelda

- Before settling Zelda’s daemon was named Charlie. After settling he was renamed to Bogoslav, Bo for short.

- In the Royal Family, daemon forms were varied, but there were still expectations. For example, a dog daemon would be considered undesirable. Forms were expected to be unusual, beautiful and awe inspiring.

- From a young age Bo obeyed this; when he wasn’t imitating Prince Consort Rhoam’s eagle owl daemon or the Queen’s dart frog, he was making himself into the most intricate, pretty parrot he could.

- He would spend hours with Zelda poring over books and trying out strange forms, excitedly spectulating about he would settle as. He changed shape incessantly.

- Then the Queen died and Rhoam became King. Bo stopped changing as much and chose less interesting forms such as rabbits and foxes. As Zelda’s spirit was crushed with grief and the pressure of saving the Kingdom, he became a dull, bland daemon.

- That is until she meets the Sheikah and learns about science and ancient technology.

- She still has the weight of the world on her shoulders, but they’re revitalised by their new passion. Bo still doesn’t change as much in public, but in private it’s like they’re young again.

- Zelda performs experiments with him, pushing the boundaries of what he can turn into and recording results, and sometimes seeing how far they can go from each other. After the first test they don’t do it again; both are too close to each other.

- Bo and Zelda have a stronger than usual link for a Hylian; they can send strong images and sometimes words to each other.

-  King Rhoam begins to notice her distraction, particularly when Bo starts to favour the shape of a magpie and raven, the same as the Sheikah scientists she is now close too.

- They start arguing about her devotion to her task. One day he is particularly angry, and Zelda is scared. Bo stands between them in the shape of a boar, something he hasn’t turned into before.

- Zelda feels the difference immediately, and they know he has settled as her father stomps out the door. She doesn’t tell anyone, although it is soon obvious what has transpired.

- King Rhoam is horrified. Everyone knows that boars and pigs are associated with Ganon; to have a Princess with such a daemon is a scandal. And it’s impossible to hide, unlike the unfortunate daemon of the new Hero; Bogoslav is big.

- Zelda’s settled form becomes the talk of the court. Doomsayers believe that she is incapable of saving Hyrule with a boar daemon.

- Zelda isn’t upset at Bo; she is annoyed instead at the busybodies who judge her for her daemon’s form. The court learn to step carefully around the topic of her daemon.

- In secret however, she is worried. Most Princesses would have unlocked the sealing power by now, but she has not. Both worry that there is something wrong with them. One time Bo even suggests intercision; Zelda instantly rejects that and hugs him.

- Both take an instant dislike to their assigned knight and his mystery demon.

- Bo is the first to crack; he gently suggests that Zelda should be nicer to him. Zelda ignores this, until after the Yiga attack.

- When they open up to each other, the Hero reveals his daemon; not the Master Sword or some strange spirit, but a stoat. Zelda and Bo are happy to meet another maligned daemon form.

- When Zelda unlocks her power, it runs through Bo, who charges the Guardian threatening them.

- It’s too late to save Link. Bo carries him on his back, while Zelda carries Fi. Despite breaking the great taboo, it feels right.

- Once Ganon is defeated, they go with Link and Fi to Hateno. On the road, she is as relieved by the lack of judgement as Link was.

Daemon AU: Link

Botw daemon AU worldbuilding

- Link’s daemon is Fi, a stoat.

- Originally she was called Fiona, before Link changed it. It just felt right to him.

- Link’s family have a long history of having somewhat unusual forms for the military. His father was a bear, and his mother was a leopard. Respectable daemon shapes, but not the orthodox dog or wolf.

- Even as a child she was a bit strange; she always had blue eyes unless she made an effort to change the colour.

- He had a feeling for quite a while that Fi wouldn’t settle as expected. Worried about this, as changing shape became more difficult for her he pressured her into staying as a deerhound, one of the last forms she could change into without discomfort. She held the shape for so long that they thought it was over, until one night.

- Link had a habit of creeping away into the wilderness for walks; he liked to get into secret fights and it helped him clear his head. He doesn’t notice the moblin sneak up on them until Fi barks.

- It’s an unpleasant battle. He’s caught off guard and wasn’t looking for a fight that night. The moblin tries to kick Fi, but she changes into something smaller faster than she has for a very long time. Link is too busy trying to fight off the moblin to think much about this, though.

- Fi shrieks, distracting the moblin. Link takes the opportunity to break through its defenses and injures it. Still a stoat, she crawls all over it and bites it Link cuts the head off.

- They aren’t worried that night when she stays a stoat; he’s a bit shocked and she often turned into a cuddly animal to hug him when he was a bit younger. It isn’t until the next day that it hits.

- For a stoat, she’s big and pretty; her pelt is filled with subtle shades and her eyes are icy blue. But she’s still just a stoat.

- It’s bad. Stoats are considered untrustworthy and treacharous. And they’re very small for a knight. Link’s heritage protects him from being kicked out, but he’s still treated poorly.

-To compensate he shuts down and tries to make himself perfect. It doesn’t really work, but he persists.

- He isn’t the nicest to Fi during this. Link resents her settling, although he knows that she didn’t choose this either. He holds her at arm’s length and doesn’t talk to her.

- When he returns with the Master Sword the suspicion goes away, but the pressure becomes worse. He shuts down further, and is asked by King Rhoam to hide his daemon’s true shape.

-Rumours spread throughout the kingdom about the Hero’s daemon. Some say it’s the Master Sword. Others claim that he has no daemon at all. Fi curls up in misery whenever she hears these rumours.

- The only people who aren’t family or knights who know are Mipha and Zelda. Neither care and this makes Link more accepting of Fi. Before Calamity they start to slowly repair their relationship, although he still isn’t allowed to reveal her shape by the King.

- Link doesn’t have these biases when he wakes up in the Shrine of Resurrection. Neither of them remember anything except for their names.

- After the Calamity, Hylians have became more relaxed about daemons. They still get a side-eye, but when news of the valiant wanderer with a stoat daemon spreads this goes away. Link never makes attempts to hide Fi anymore, giving people who judge them a dirty look.

- She isn’t able to take down a monster for herself, but she is still very useful. When he fights she distracts the monster by dancing around or biting. She is sturdy and not an obstacle when navigating tricky terrain.

- When he gets more of his memories back, it shakes both of them. However they still stay closer than they ever had been before. Neither of them want to go back to before.

- Fi is more confident and outgoing than Link; she can be impulsive and more aggressive.

- In winters she moults into a winter coat.

- Link and Fi don’t have the same dreams. Link dreams almost every night, while Fi only dreams rarely. When she does she is often in another shape, with another Hylian strangely similar to Link. Neither understand what these dreams mean.

So I’ve had ideas BOTW daemon AU for the last few months and I’m waiting for the second Book of Dust to arrive so. This is just worldbuilding, I’ll post what daemons the characters have in a bit.

So basically in this AU only Hylians, Sheikah and Gerudo have daemons. Rito, Zoras and Gorons do not.

-Hylians and Sheikah believe that daemons are a gift from Hylia.

-Gerudo believe that they were the first to have daemons, and that Hylians and Sheikah stole this ability from them. Their stories don’t mention where the first came from in the first place, though.

-Because of the divide between daemon and daemonless species, some members of each group see each as inferior. ie. Some Hylians might see daemonless species as soulless, while a Goron might see having the soul outside of their bodies as weak. Most of the Hyrulean races get along fine, although daemons and the lack thereof can take a bit of getting used to.

-Hylian daemons are just HDM daemons; they change shapes until their child is around puberty, then settle. They’re almost always the opposite sex from their Hylian. When they die they disappear.

- With one difference; when a child is born their parents daemons give the new daemon a name. When they settle, the daemon and their Hylian choose their own name. The first name is usually a normal Hylian name, and the settled one something more fancy.

- If they’re from a military family, there’s a lot of pressure for them to settle ‘correctly’. There’s an expectation that they’ll become a large dog or wolf, as these Hylians with these daemons are considered both good at fighting and team players. Of course, having a large daemon helps. Other apex predators and birds of prey are less ideal, but still acceptable. Having something other than that can open the daemon and their Hylian to harassment.

- This is common amongst jobs and stuff; Hylians are obsessed with the meanings of daemons, and have may stereotypes about each form.

- Having the same shape as one of the Royal Family is considered good luck and Hylians with them are treated with extra respect, even if their daemon’s shape would once have been considered negative.

- Gerudo daemons are usually born in one shape. Male Gerudo have daemons that can change shape, but they are still born in one shape and this is the form they are most comfortable with. Changing shape is an effort for them.

- While some daemons are more practical than others, Gerudo are more chill about what shape a daemon is than the other races. There are stereotypes, of course, but Gerudo don’t push these stereotypes as strongly as the other races, and almost every for isn’t considered shameful.

- One exception to their chillness about daemon shapes are boar and pig shapes; they are considered bad luck and a baby born with one is killed. They try to keep this secret from the other races.

- Some Hylians move to the Gerudo Desert to avoid persecution for their daemon shape because of this.

- Their daemons also have a need to eat and drink; much less than their actual shape would, and it doesn’t matter what (a dog daemon could happily eat chocolate, for instance), but they still need sustenance. They don’t need to go to the toilet, however.

- Daemon gender is random and not based on the Gerudo’s own identity.

- Their mother’s daemon names the young daemon, and this is the name they keep for life.

- The daemon will not disappear immediately after death; they slowly turn into golden dust over the course of months and then are blown away. Gerudo place this body near their Gerudo’s grave; this makes Gerudo graveyards a ghoulish sight.

- Sheikah daemons are similar to Hylian ones, but they are usually settle as birds.

- Sheikah with non-bird daemons exist, but are rare. It’s considered shameful: at best they are considered childish, at worst they are considered untrustworthy or traitorous (the Yiga Clan are also have bird daemons for the most part, but non-bird daemons are more common. Sheikah with non-bird daemons are more likely to join them because of their poor treatment amongst their own people).

- From a young age Sheikah are trained to have a strong bond with their daemon. While Hylians and Gerudo have limited telepathic communication with their daemons, Sheikah can hold full conversations with their daemon in their head, and even see through their eyes.

- Therefore they don’t interact very much with their daemon in real life, which can make them seem disinterested in each other, but the opposite is true.

- The main feature their daemons are known for is the ability to travel as far from their Sheikah as they like without pain. Most Hyruleans believe this is just something they are born with, but it is actually a rite of passage.

- To be considered an adult, a Sheikah must partake in a ritual that seperates their daemon from them without breaking their bond. This is extremely painful and sometimes results in deaths or a full seperation if they are not ready. In order to prevent this there is a strict age limit and other tests that must be passed before the final seperation is performed. 

- Hylians and Gerudo could also participate in this, but the ritual is a closely guarded secret and it would be far more dangerous for them without the lifelong preparation a Sheikah undertakes. This has ensured that very few of the other races have ever participated.

- Gorons and Rito are apathetic about daemons. In general both species find them strange, and think that having one’s soul wander around outside of your body makes you extremely vulnerable. Rito can be very vocal about their dislike of daemons, Gorons tend to just be creeped out.

- However Zora are more attuned to the concept, and have something like an equivalent. This makes the adjustment to races with daemons easier.

-Throughout their life, Zora’s accumulate jewelry. They believe that this is where their soul resides. 

- Zora therefore split jewelry into two types; normal jewelry and soul jewelry. Normal jewelry is taken on and off at will, soul jeweelry can only be removed under certain circumstances, with certain prayers and rituals. Normal jewelry can become soul jewelry, but not the other way around. The first piece of soul jewelry is given by the parents as soon as the parent can put it on.

- Soul jewelry is given, earned or received, and not bought by the Zora who wears it. A Zora who is found to have purchased soul jewelry for themselves will have their honour destroyed. It is considered fine to buy soul jewelry as long as it is not for yourself, however.

- When a Zora dies, most of their soul jewelry is burned down into new jewelry. Reusing jewelry is thought to trap the Zora’s soul and prevent them from moving on.

- Stealing soul jewelry is a great crime, and tantamount to murder. Most exiles have their soul jewelry taken from them before leaving. This is buried in the ground so that their souls can never rest.

- This practice is generally looked down upon; Rito and Gorons see it as needlessly vain and pointless, while the races with daemons see it as a hollow tradition that doesn’t match up to a daemon. The Zora mock this.
