THE DOUBLE EVERYTHING??? ✌️ 2 Taylor’s, 2 interpretations, the split in the narrative
Tumblr media
The way her shooting the arrow can either be interpreted as being abt 🏈 or abt The Archer/Katniss who was the symbol of rebellion and revolution

🔥 In case of fire, please use fire exit 🔥
(what if I told you none of it was accidental?)
Tumblr media
“I keep these longings locked in lowercase inside a vault.” 🐍 “The upcoming vault tracks for reputation will be ‘fire’ she promises.”
Tumblr media
"Spring breaks loose but so does fear. He's gonna burn this house to the ground."
Tumblr media
"Wise men once said: 'Wild winds are death to the candle.' A rose by any other name is a scandal."
Tumblr media
"I'd rather burn my whole life down than listen to one more second of all this bitching and moaning. I'll tell you something about my good name; it's mine alone to disgrace."
Tumblr media
"Dear reader: Burn all the files, desert all your past lives, and if you don't recognize yourself, that means you did it right."
Tumblr media
“Camera flashes, welcome bashes, get the matches, toss the ashes off the ledge”
Tumblr media
“Oh what a way to die. My bedsheets are ablaze, I scream your name.”
Tumblr media
“My castle’s crumbling down, and I watch all my bridges burn to the ground.”
Tumblr media
“And when that sky rains fire on you, and you’re persona non grata, I’ll tell you how I’ve been there too, and that none of it matters.”
Tumblr media
“Our field of dreams engulfed in fire. Your arson’s match, your somber eyes. And I’ll still see it until I die.”
Tumblr media
“So yeah, it’s a fire. It’s a goddamn blaze in the dark, and you started it. So yeah, it’s a war. It’s the goddamn fight of my life, and you started it.”

The Lover House Burning
I 100% see the lover house burning down as a symbol foretelling another step towards coming out. Just like knocking down the set walls in Lavender Haze. I also see the midnights cover with the lighter as an Easter egg/precursor for that visual.
I always saw the lover house as representing a safe haven hideaway for her and her lover, where they could fully be themselves while keeping their relationship secret. Funnily enough I used to think that because evermore was the last “room” to be filled in the house, in the closet, I thought that she was saying she would stay in the closet “forevermore”. But these new tour visuals and Midnights as a whole, including the lighter picture, are really making me rethink that.
However, I don’t see the house burning as an absolute end point, that means she’s about to announce in plain words her whole truth to the world. I see her coming out process as something like peeling back layers…and in the process, her audience is forced to get more and more accustomed to the the idea, the possibility, the reality that Taylor is gay. It’s like the metaphor about turning up the heat on some slowly. The frog won’t jump out of the pot if the temperature changes gradually.
So many different visuals on this tour suggest she is seeing the path forward in progressive stages. The closet door (solid wood, orange appearing from far away) descending and then turning into a cube made of diamonds (glass closet) and then exploding into rainbow glitter, shows a progression from being fully hidden to glass closeting to fully being out.
Each album is louder, each tour is louder, and now she has her other lesbian and bisexual pop star friends straight up calling her queer in interviews, being very openly gaylor and Kaylor on social media, etc.
The lover house burning seems to symbolize one layer of protection she’s shirking. Maybe the beard, maybe something else.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(The fact that the show ends with the closet door—> glass closet—> rainbow confetti progression, after the house burning, which came after her peeking out of the blinds, etc, also very important. There’s a whole narrative arc!)

Lover not so Loving??
(i dont know if this has been discussed before)
In the Lover room in the Lover house.
This is the only room where there is actual fighting going on. Showing that the Lover era wasn't all purple pink skies as we once thought, and was reflected in the forthcoming albums folklore and evermore.
Taylor recently revealed during her Miami Night 3 show during the Betty set that the folklore / evermore era was "reflected through her own personal experiences" for the characters she created.

“Don’t put me on display ‘cause you don’t own me. Don’t try to change me in any way”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“We twist in our self-made cages and pray that we aren’t—right this minute—about to make some fateful life-altering mistake… For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching—hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve… we’ll meet ourselves.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The entire Eras Tour is a commentary on fame. It isn’t just abt her masters, it’s abt Taylor Swift the brand. It’s abt her finally deciding to put her happiness before her fans. Gaga’s Applause followed by You Don’t Own Me. The Archer transitioning into Fearless w the lover house burning down. The seven spoken word poem. Don’t Blame Me/LWYMMD w the bird cage. Wildest Dreams/Bad Blood w the lover house burning down again. Giant Anti Hero Taylor screaming at the audience to see her. The (closet) door descending during Karma. The Late Night Edition that’s available exclusively at the shows w “Dear Reader you’re losing me.” It’s all addressed to the fans. She’s done being a mirrorball trapped in a display case.

The visceral queer sadness of the song "Lover"
When Lover first came out as a single I bawled my eyes out.
And I wasn't exactly sure why. It made me feel crazy: How could people think this song was so romantic and I'm over here having a breakdown?
In the music video, Taylor is running around this whimsical house with her lover experiencing all these intimate and personal versions of love. With its hyper-saturated colors and perfect outfits, this relationship was simultaneously presented as both real and surreal.
Tumblr media
When that song came out in 2019 I was single and closeted — even to myself. I was just beginning my journey of realizing I was gay and accepting that I wasn't going to ever marry a man and have the heteronormative cookie-cutter life I had always pictured, and had been struggling for many years to hold onto the idea of.
Listening to Lover, the thought that kept running through my mind was, "I'm never going to have that… I'm never going to have that…"
Tumblr media
Even though I had been a huge Taylor Swift fan since we were both teenagers, up to this point I had mostly just enjoyed her music and didn't think too deeply about it. But something about this song just felt off to me — I wasn't buying it. But I didn't have the vocabulary yet to express why. So when it came on the radio I would skip it or turn it off to prevent myself from tearing up.
A few months later the pandemic shut down the world, and I was forced to sit alone with my thoughts. I finally came out to myself and began the long and slow journey of figuring out how to change my entire life.
Then Folklore was released, and I heard Betty, and that was the first time my brain actively flared, "wait... is Taylor Swift gay?" and I began my deep descent into Gaylor and looking at Taylor's music through a queer lens.
Now I can look back at songs like Lover with my new understanding/beliefs of Taylor's struggles with queerness and closeting, and perhaps her desire to build up her own perfect dollhouse life when it wasn't that simple.
Tumblr media
In Lover, the plodding waltz tempo strikes a dissonance with the lyrics that are trying to convey happiness and security. And while she presented this song to the public as a "wedding dance" song, Taylor still seems to be imaging something that hasn't fully happened yet:
We could leave the Christmas lights up 'til January
We could let our friends crash in the living room
The lyrics aren't confident, they are still asking a lot of questions as she pictures this life together:
Can I go where you go?
Can we always be this close?
And seems to be a desire to show this "inside" dollhouse love to the "outside" world:
Take me out, and take me home
At every table, I'll save you a seat
It's a song that seems to be just as much about fear as it is about love.
So maybe I was right to cry over Lover. Maybe Lover feels just as sad to Taylor as it does to me. While she was presenting this complete dollhouse life to the public, maybe this world was all still a fantasy and the song was longing for something that wasn't quite real yet.

Was just marveling over how pretty the Lover Era section of the Era's Tour is and because I haven't seen this live yet... I hadn't yet absorbed the full effect. Girlypop is speaking now as far as I'm concerned lol.
