Can recommend me some top notch shoegaze albums for someone that’s new to it?

i feel like early my bloody valentine is a good place to start. i think rather than their albums the you made me realise EP, sunny sundae smile EP, and ecstasy and wine comp are good listens.

slowdive’s souvlaki and earlier stuff is good too. ride’s early EPs s/t and play, and vapour trail is good but the album it comes from isn’t consistent enough for me to recommend tbh(fans of this album don’t hate me pls)

chapterhouse’s freefall(has flavors of the madchester genre- which is also a crazy good scene. check it if u haven’t yet, happy mondays and stone roses are a must listen) and sunburst EPs along with their debut album whirlpool are ace.

an honorable mention is the pains of being pure at heart’s self-titled debut album. they were a part of the low-key second wave of shoegaze in the late 00s so...not OG ‘gaze but still worth a listen. i have memories of having teenage angst and heartbreak that i channeled into listening to this album lmao

now the japanese shoegaze scene was just as plentiful. paint in watercolour(velocity) and venus peter(lovemarine, space driver) were really good.

btw these are in no order, just writing it down as my memory kicks in. wish i still had all the shoegaze mp3s i had 10 years ago when i was OBSESSED with the genre. my memory is bad so i know that i’m missing some good stuff here. i hope you find something that speaks to you within this mess :-)

Summer of 1991 & 1992 デボネアの25年ぶりのリリースとなるシングルが今日から店頭にならぶ、そしていよいよこの週末ヴィーナス・ペーターとデボネアの共演が実現する。どちらのバンドも僕がはじめて作ったレーベルからリリースしたということもあり、この2バンドについては若かった日々の思い出と様々な感情が湧き上がってくる。 

せっかくの機会なので当時のことを振り返って、当時夢中で追いかけた音楽とそのシーンについて書いてみようと思う。 

Wonder Releaseは1991年の夏、ヴィーナス・ペーターの12インチのリリースから活動を開始、その後シークレット・ゴールドフィッシュをリリース。翌年にはペニー・アーケードの再発CDを挟んでデボネアとサイド・ディッシュを発売、どのバンドも最初に12インチ・シングルを発売してすぐにアルバムというスタイルだった。 ヴィーナス・ペーターのアルバム『Lovemarine』のレコーディングが91年の���ールデン・ウィーク、デボネアの『Etarnity One』が92年の7月発売、この1年はまさに僕の人生の中でも特別に濃厚な時間だった。    僕は80年代前半を高校生として、後半を大学生として過ごした。パンクには間に合わなかったけれど、スミスもアズテックもリアルタイムで聴くことができた。 思い返せば、なぜ当時の僕は音楽になにを求め、そしてなにを読み取っていたのだろう。 『ロンドン・コーリング』や『オール・モッド・コンズ』は15歳の僕にとって未知への扉だった。海沿いのゆったりとした平和な高校生活はもちろんすばらしかったが、もっと心を熱くしてくれる何がかきっとどこかにあるはずだという思いは常に心のどこかにあった。 しかし、自分がなにを求めているかということはまったく言語化もできなければ意識することもできずにいた。 そんな時期にほんとに夢中になったのが音楽だった。パンクやニューウェーブのレコードは時空を超えて僕の心に飛び込んできたし、そのジャケットや音楽からは当時の日本の文化からはまったく感じることのできない、生々しいメッセージや繊細で壊れそうな心のありようが、遠く離れた日本にも確実に伝わってきていた。日本のポップスがきらいだったわけではないが、愛や恋だけでなく行き場のない怒りや力強い理想、正しさそして絶望や目の前に広がる矛盾やそういったことに直面した時の気持ちや、今のリアリティーそういったことを聞かせて欲しかったのだ。そういうものを僕を虜にした音楽はもっていたし、こちらも自分の感性を総動員して読み取ろうとしていた。 つい最近刊行されたトレーシー・ソーンの自伝『安ホテルのディスコクィーン』を夢中で読んだのだが、僕より5歳年上の彼女がその活動の初期に感じていたことが、当時高校生だった僕が彼女の音楽から読み取っていたこととほとんど同じようなことだったというのは驚きだった。渇望した心が読み取ろうとする力と想像力は時空を超えることがあるのかと。 これはパオロ・ヒューイットの『クリエーション・レコード物語』を読んだ時にも思った。 トレーシーの自伝についてはしっかりとしたレビューを書こうと思う。 そう、82年から85年を高校生で過ごしたというのは自分にとってとてもラッキーなことだった。パンクの名作はまだ輸入盤店で買うことができたし、なによりも『ハイランド、ハードレイン』や『パシフィック・ストリート』にリアルタイムで出会うことができたのだから。 たまに新宿の輸入盤店に行って壁に並べられたスミスのシングルのジャケットはもうそれ自体がメッセージだったし、あきらかに世間で流行っているポップスとは違った。いまとなっては当時のヒット曲、とくにアメリカでのチャートのものその意味もわかるし、当時の思い出ともにたのしく聴くことができる、しかしほんとに熱中した作品はまだ当時と同じように響いてくるのだ。

86年には僕も一人暮らしをしながら都内の大学に通うようになる。87年にはスミスが解散してしまうけれど、ハウス・オブ・ラブもデビューするし『ソニック・フラワー・グルーヴ』も発売になる。この4年間、週に2~3日はレコード・ショップをぐるぐる回り、ライブハウスに行っていた。そして88年にはローゼズ、マンデイズに出会いインスパイラル・カーペッツのデビューEP「Plane Crash」が出る、翌年にはもうすっかり新しい時代の幕開けだった。 それはまさに64年、77年につづく新しいムーブメントであり、しかも僕等が主役なのだ。 

91年から92年の思い出を話すつもりが、つい長くなってしまった。しかしこの80年代が僕にとって非常に重要なことなのだ。というのも、これだけ熱中したにもかかわらずこの思いを共有する友達がほとんどいなかったからだ。高校時代も大学時代も音楽好きの友人はほんの数人だったし、インディー、ネオアコ、ギター・ポップを同じように体験していたとなるとさらに少なかった。

だから、91年ヴィーナス・ペーターと出会った時の衝撃はほんとに忘れることができない。そう、同じように音楽を聴いてきて、いま目の前で起きてる音楽について話し合える人たちとレーベルを始めることができるなんて思ってもみなかったからだ。 91年、下北沢ZOOや原宿クロコダイル、吉祥寺ハッスルそして渋谷クアトロ、川崎チッタ、いろんな場所におなじような音楽を好きな人がいて話をすることができた、これはほんとに楽しいことだった。 この年に京都ビッグバンでデボネアのライブを初めてみたときの驚きは説明しようがない。なぜならまんまペイル・ファウンテンズのメロディーとアレンジだったからだ、こんなバンドが日本にいるとは想像もしてなかった。    思い出すと冷や汗の出ることばかりだけれど、91年のレーベル発足からの1年間は特別に濃厚な体験だった。その後もずっと音楽に夢中ではあるけれど、この時期ほど素直に自分の選んだ音楽に夢をみれた時期は他にない。もちろん失敗の連続だったけど、この経験があったからいまも音楽にかかわっていられるんだと思う。 

これはデボネアのショウちゃんも言っていたことだけど、音楽の話をしてる時が一番楽しい、ほんとそうだと思う。    みなさん、6月22日のQUE、6月29日のNOONでおまちしてます。
