[QZGS meta] what’s in an OP? dawning glory (pt 3)

This is the third and last post in my little series analyzing the opening theme of The King’s Avatar Season 2! Honestly, this whole thing became way longer than I was expecting. I guess this is what happens when all my immense amount of love for this series, accumulated over years of no-donghua-updates, overlaps with my immense amount of love for anime openings. 

Watched the first and second episodes yesterday, and they really sparked a lot of joy. :D I missed Blue River so much :D

Yesterday, they released the OST for Season 2, which includes the TV cut and full versions of the OP and ED, as well as two insert songs, and the instrumental versions of all of the above. I’ve yet to find anywhere that lets me download the audio files (hoping they’ll be reuploaded to youtube or bilibili soon), but in the meantime you can listen here. Anyway, let’s finish up this OP analysis!

Now here, we reach the true climax as we enter the chorus section. This next segment is definitely the highest-energy part of the entire opening. It’s a montage of Happy’s characters showing off their moves, timed to the music; there’s not too much deeper meaning, but damn if it doesn’t look fantastic. The animation flows from one character and scene to the next so smoothly, so beautifully, it’s just incredibly hype to see. This is what you get when you specifically choreograph/animate sequences for the opening instead of just reusing shots from the main show! (Parts of some of these shots appeared in episode 1, but I do honestly think that it’s more likely that the show reused shots from the opening than the other way around, just because of how perfectly the OP fits together. I also don’t think it’s super noticeable in-show; I’ve just been watching this obsessively.)

In particular I love the line that kicks this all off: “just put on your battle armor and step onto the road to the unknown.” Specifically, though, the rhythm of the lyric is, “jiu pi shang zhan jia ta shang wei zhi qian fang,” with emphasizing accents on the -ang sounds. This isn’t how you would divide the phrase naturally, but because the (syncopated!!) melody accents these notes/syllables, the rhyming effect really stands out and it feels as clever and satisfying as a rap lyric. Moreover, the emphasis times juuust right with the attacks of Soft Mist, Steamed Bun Invasion, and Windward Formation, a perfect example of how music and visuals mutually reinforce each other for maximum cool effect. 

It’s generally easier to rhyme in Chinese than English, because of a smaller phonetic vocabulary. From the chorus onward, the key rhyme is on the “-ang” sound (think “ahng” or “ong”, not “aang” like the Avatar), which is a good choice - powerful, reverberant. The asymmetry of the syllable’s use in this section - the song’s lines are all different lengths at this part, so you’re kept on your toes as to when the pattern will reappear - helps add to the engaging excitement of the song. This is also the syllable used for most of the rhymes in the second half of the first OP.

I really love One Inch Ash’s design. Concealed Light had a big redesign for this season, and honestly I like it as well. And notice here that he’s holding a book - exactly how we left Luo Ji when we saw him last! 

“Waving the light clenched tightly in our hand” - that is to say, brandishing our light as our weapon, no matter what form it may take - a sword, a book, our hope and determination. 

On a purely musical note (ha), right at this point, specifically the measure beginning with “那束光,” you can hear a three-note “ooo” harmony line in the background, and wow it’s so subtle but I love it so much! A similar three-note line actually appears earlier too (during the “crossing the frozen finish line,” right as the music is building up), also to great effect.  

We follow Concealed Light’s gaze upward to the building to see Deception running along the wall, from which he does a flip and slashes downward with twin blades. I love that transition a lot, but my favorite transition of this entire sequence has to be the following one:

Yes! Deception’s cross slash resolves perfectly into the cross held by Little Cold Hands. It’s so fast and so natural you don’t even notice it, and that’s the absolute beauty of it. The first time I saw this, I was in awe - the animators really brought their A-game to this, far better than I ever would have dared hope for this series.

And Little Cold Hands is so pretty! When we got our first art of her official design, the comments were filled with people simping for her, and honestly, valid. I’m surprised her hair is purple instead of pink, but that’s just a minor thing. 

There’s something especially powerful about how she raises her cross in time with the lyric “having you all here [with me] on this road,” and then the cross flashing brilliantly with “it’s power.” More than any other role, the healer is a team player. And this theme of team togetherness is particularly important for An Wenyi, who is deeply moved by the team’s perhaps illogical faith in him. Remember that analogy Ye Xiu tells him, of the straw tied to the deluxe mitten crab? 

An aside: listening to this, I always thought the line should be 有你们在身旁 instead of 有你们在路上, because it still fits the rhyme, because my past experience has somewhat conditioned me to expect that phrase, and because the full message of “having you by my side is power” just makes me wanna tear up like what a good line! So it felt like a missed opportunity that they didn’t use that. But as it turns out, the final iteration of this chorus in the full version of the OP does, in fact, use “by my side”! And I think making this tiny tweak to the lyric the final time you here it just makes it that much stronger :’)

I’m also just a big fan of the “it’s power” melodic flourish in general, since it comes as a surprise. You kind of expect the melody to end with the previous phrase, but the extra notes here add a really nice emphatic beat to finish off the line. 

So to recap the transitions: we see Soft Mist falling from the sky and get a close up of her face as she stabs her spear; this takes us to a closeup of Steamed Bun’s face facing roughly the same direction before we zoom out to his torso and he slashes from lower left of the screen to upper right; following the motion of that slash we see Windward Formation’s torso rotate in that direction as the camera zooms out farther; we follow the rays of his attack to see One Inch Ash drawing his sword; we zoom in on the flashing blade and zoom out on Concealed Light’s glowing book; we follow his gaze upward to see Deception running along the building behind him; Deception leaps and slashes and the slash becomes Little Cold Hands’ cross, which raises up and triggers an explosion. It’s just so dynamic and smooth even without taking place in one continuous setting, and it just really, really gets you hyped. 

Also, starting from Happy’s team picture at the start of the chorus, which is during the day, it feels like Soft Mist and Steamed Bun’s moves are at late afternoon, Windward Formation and One Inch Ash take us to nighttime, and then you can see the first rays of morning in Concealed Light and Deception’s segments. This continuity also definitely helps with the feeling of natural flow through these scenes. 

Anyway, this entire action segment is just so beautiful, I could watch it on loop. But we still have the final segment of this OP to analyze, so let’s keep going.

After the action sequences of the climax, we settle down a bit now as we approach the end. Here we see the Excellent Era team picture, in the same style as the team pics we saw earlier, but presented separately. It makes sense, as the role they play in the story is different from the roles of all the other teams. 

Sun Xiang, Liu Hao, and Cui Li are at the bottom. Because we’re panning up, these three are the first we see. At first glance, the way they’re positioned is fairly consistent with the team pics we’ve seen already: Captain Sun Xiang at center-right, the largest figure; vice-captain Liu Hao, manager Cui Li in the background. 

Sun Xiang’s position and expression is really the only one that fits the healthy pattern of the teams we’ve seen already - looking toward the camera, a confident (though arrogant) smile. He might be misguided, but there’s hope for him yet. Notice how Liu Hao isn’t even looking at the camera, which as we’ve seen before is somewhat of an indication of how unified and focused the team is toward its goal; instead, Liu Hao is doing his own thing, determined to prioritize his own desires over what’s best for the team. And manager Cui Li is in this image too, despite not even being a player. His sinister presence reflects the unhealthy interference of the business side in the gaming side. Excellent Era’s downfall comes about because of its prioritization of profit over victory.

As we pan up, Excellent Era’s logo comes into view. It’s larger than any of the other team logos we’ve seen so far, spanning around three-quarters of the screen whereas the others looked to span no more than half. Excellent Era’s legacy is a weighty one, to date the only team to have ever won three championships, and consecutively to boot. 

It’s this immense, shining logo that seems to be casting Tao Xuan on the left into shadow. He cuts a large figure, reflecting the deep impact his actions have had upon the main plot of this story, even though he’s only now appearing for the first time in the donghua.

However, he’s also turned away from the camera, such that we can barely even see his closed eye. Because of that, it’s difficult to read his expression, but the impression given by this pose is not one of vindictive pride, but one of shame, as though he can’t quite bear to face what he’s done. On some level, no matter how he might try to rationalize it as necessary, Tao Xuan knows that his profit-driven betrayal of Ye Xiu was a pretty awful thing to do. It might be this amount of guilt that leads him to offer Ye Xiu a wish granted, a tribute to their years of friendship and partnership before their ties are severed completely.

In the end, Tao Xuan’s greed leaves him with nothing really to show for it. What had he gained? What had he lost? Those realizations are still a ways off in the story, but I like how this OP is already hinting at the depth of his character. Tao Xuan isn’t some glasses-flashing, evil-laughing, one-dimensional antagonist; he is in fact very realistic for the setting. We can condemn his actions and priorities, but at the same time we can understand how he ended up here.

As for Su Mucheng, her eyes are closed as well. She’s brightly illuminated, but pointedly turned away from all of the others in Excellent Era; she knows the direction of her future, and that it no longer lies with Excellent Era. Her loyalty was always to Ye Xiu, and as soon as he was banished, her relationship to the team was professional and nothing more. 

“This light hidden in my heart is burning” - there are many ways to read this lyric and what exactly the light referenced here is, but because the line is paired with this image, I naturally think about Su Mucheng’s situation. Despite her pretty-vase, sweet-girl appearance, she holds a deep, profound anger at everything that happened regarding Excellent Era. It’s a testament to her immense strength of character that she lasted the remaining one and a half years of her contract in this hostile environment. 

Yet even as she resolves to cut ties, there’s a sadness in her expression. She was here from the very beginning as well, when Excellent Era was no more than an internet cafe, and it pains her immensely that the powerhouse, championship team that they and her brother had built from the ground up would ultimately meet this tragic end.

It’s interesting to note that both of the “redeemable” characters here (namely Su Mucheng and Sun Xiang) are on the right, more brightly-lit side of the screen, so there’s a nice little dividing line you can draw there. Sun Xiang’s eyes are still looking toward the left, though, revealing how his character development still has yet to play out.

From there we cut to Ye Xiu holding Lord Grim’s account card. He’s standing back on top of the roof from the beginning of the OP, now in full daylight.

As mentioned… the animators really went ham on the bangs animation.

Ye Xiu turns away from the railing, the camera cuts to an image of Happy’s logo on a flag waving in the wind, and then we zoom out to see the current members of Team Happy gathered together in uniform, standing proud in the light of day. Left to right, Steamed Bun, Tang Rou, Luo Ji, Ye Xiu, An Wenyi, Wei Chen, Chen Guo. Presumably, this will be Happy’s lineup by the end of the season. 

Up until now, we’ve only seen the real players separate from each other - they’ve all been in different places, never even in the same frame together. (This, of course, also contrasts the pro team pics that we have, which show everyone together.) Halfway through the OP, we got the group shot of them meeting in game with their characters. And now, they’ve finally met up in the real world as well. 

One thing I like about this final pose is how it compares to the final pose of the OVA OP. It’s the same kind of power-pose vibe, but there we only had Ye Xiu, Chen Guo, and Tang Rou. Look at how we’ve grown since then! They’re well on their way to being a proper pro team! 

And that’s a wrap! With this final image of Team Happy gathered together, we’re ready to enter the episode proper. 

So let’s talk about the OP as a whole. Generally, an OP serves a couple of main roles: a) tells you a bit about what the show is about, b) gives you an overall feeling / mood for the show, c) gets you hyped and ready to watch the upcoming episode.

How well does this opening achieve those goals? Pretty well, as we’ve seen. Past OPs did a pretty good job of setting the mood, but they honestly just put some pretty visuals on the screen, only vaguely aligned to the music, and called it a day. This OP, however, has a cohesive storyline to tell, framed around Team Happy’s coming together (following the tagline of this season). Even in such a short span of time, it manages to convey so much information about its story and characters, both overt and implicit (as I hope this series of posts has managed to convince you). Paired with the music, which has its own deeper meanings encoded in the lyrics, the OP becomes incredibly effective and memorable as it makes its statement.

I mentioned an “interest curve” earlier (interest in the sense of interesting, not the money); this is part of the standard formula for anime opening songs, in my experience. I’m a little too lazy to draw a graph myself, so take a look at this image:

Although not all of the relative heights and segment lengths are accurate in this specific case, hopefully the general shape of the interest curve is enough to demonstrate my point. You’ve got the A-B peak at the opening instrumental segment, the C-D peak/arc over verse 1, the D-E-F peak/arc over verse 2, then the sharp F-G-H peak over the chorus before dropping off for a smooth landing right into the episode. This general pattern is effective at holding the viewer’s focus and managing their excitement over the course of this one and a half minutes. 

Visually, the OP is just such a treat for the eyes. I’ve already talked about many of the little details I love - lighting, character designs, animations, transitions, etc. - but all in all the new animation studio is doing a really good job here. An OP is how you hook people, and I’d definitely feel comfortable using this to try and bait people into watching this show. 

One comment I want to add is about the incorporation of the credits, which we didn’t see until the episode premiere. I don’t think there’s anything too exciting to say (and I also don’t have access to any images right now since the OP was only shown in episode 2), but the fonts and styling were a nice choice - it gave a gaming vibe, but if I recall it still used a serif font, so it didn’t feel overly modern - and the text positioning generally complements instead of distracting. I also liked how they showed the lyrics! I didn’t really expect them to include them onscreen, or if they did, I thought they would just be plain subs like they were in this video. But in the actual OP that plays at the beginning of the episode, they’re as much a part of the art as the credits!

If I had to make any criticism, my biggest complaint about the OP is, I think, the singers. I think having two different singers trade off can work nicely, but in this case, the switches are jarring because their voices are so different. The first singer has a lower, gravely voice, while the second singer’s voice sounds much brighter and more nasally. Furthermore, the first switch doesn’t come until we’re fully halfway through the song, which means that by that point we’re already used to this first singer. It’s also strange that they’d switch back to the first voice at the climax of the song, when I think the second voice would suit the high-energy segment much better. Switching from second to first right at this point feels like we’re actually taking a step down in energy, which is the opposite of what should be happening here. 

Still, my main problem isn’t with the voice switching but with the voices themselves, and I think the voices are something I could get used to. The third switch, going from the first voice back to the second voice during the shot of Excellent Era, is much less jarring than the others - I actually like how it feels like the solo is passing naturally from one person to the next, emphasizing the ideals of this not being a single-player game and all that. For that transition in particular, I think (because of the added “it’s power” flourish) it happens too quickly for one person to sing it comfortably, so having another person pick up the line works best. And I do like how the voices sound when they overlay together for the final lines of the song. 

So, overall? Overall, this OP is really damn good. It’s everything I could have asked for and more. After such a long wait, the OP, at least, does not disappoint, and I’m extremely excited to see what the series has in store for us.

Okay so I normally read over fics katie sends back to me before uploading but my laptop just spend 2 hours uploading so I have no time uh. but happy Christimas/ Christmas Eve if you celebrate, or happy winter holidays (Or if not simply have a good few days. > • Absolutely nothing fight me ;-; > • But you still know etiquette and manners books back to front and reversed again, > • And the fact you’re a good actor really helps like damn, > • So when the Prince turns 18, Seongwoo is revealed as prince as bought to the palace as a new home, > • Everyone in the palace is rushing around, panicking at the arrival of the new prince, > • You just sit one of the balconies overlooking the dining room and watch the commotion infront if you, > • Lmao you’re hiding, your tutor is looking for you to put you in one of those fancy dresses to meet the prince but you honestly can’t be bothered, > • And hate those frilly dresses the old woman likes, > • Don’t get me wrong the woman was pretty much like a nan to you, you loved her dearly but her dress sense wasn’t great, > • You didn’t want to meet the future king in a dress like that, > • But you also didn’t understand everyone’s panic, > • The prince had grown up a civilian, and yeah he probably expected a lot at the palace, but he’d probably just be happy with a nice meal and a few fancy suits, > • You didn’t approve of them throwing him in at the deep end, he’d probably feel way out of his league and unable to keep up with everyone and their well painted faces and fake manners ready to cater to his every move, > • You knew it was a privilege, a huge one, but you knew it was extremely unnecessary and often tiring, but it did give people jobs, > • You and your parents donate your ‘wages’ to charity because what was the point of hoarding money like some of the other nobles? > • Ruins the economy, > • (Again for the selfish rich people in the back) > • So you just sit and watch the hustle and bustle until one of your parents eagle eyes spot you and you use the foundation beam as a fireman’s pole to reach the bottom, > • Lmao you know how to make the most of your surroundings, > • So you then prowl away to go and avoid frilly dresses and find yourself a nice simple dress or some dress trousers and a nice shirt, > • Honestly either, both are cute as heck anyway, > • You have to follow protocol and arrive perfectly on time, to the second, easily find your place next to one of your parents near the head of the table where the prince will be for the dinner, and look around the huge table, packed with stuck up nobles that make you roll your eyes, > • Of course not all of them, there’s a few with the exact same attitude as you, making eye contact and sending true smiles, but you know for one that this dinner will drag, > • And while you get the royals plan, to throw him straight in to get him used to the surprises and things he may have to do in the future, you think it’s kinda unfair, > • But it’s not your place, > • YET, > • (But boi do you have a few points of improvement in your mind) > • To say anything, so you sit up straight and smile like everyone else, > • So all eyes are on the prince when you stand for his entrance, everyone trying to suss him out and figure out how to get on his good side, > • You think it’s really sad some of the nobles think like that, > • But you lay your eyes on a boy, the same age as you, in a smart suit, patterned nicely, brown hair styled expertly and with a devilishly handsome face, > • He walks in nonchalantly, relaxed and confident, but as he approaches his seat next to his parents you watch his interior too become more and more tense and overwhelmed, although he shows little signs of this, > • You want to scoop the poor boy up and take him to the balconies, where the loudest noise is the wind in the trees and the only eyes belong to the birds in the sky and the squirrels in the bushes, > • Aka your favourite place, where it seems like no noise or hustle can break the serenity, > • But the dinner drags and the new Prince Seongwoo almost gets drilled with questions, interrogated on questions people know are way out of his current league, > • But he copes as well as he can, although you unconsciously notice a few moves you wouldn’t have done, > • Stupid things like eating with the wrong fork or sitting wrong, > • You hate yourself for picking it up because you know all the others will as well, > • But you feel almost as exhausted as the boy, who you occasionally make eye contact with and send him soft, genuine smiles, > • You hope he can tell you’re genuine, sending him your confidence and not one of the others, with sly questions and wicked smiles, > • When you deem acceptable, you excuse yourself from the dinner, to the surprise of none but the prince himself as you’re always the first out of the fancy meals, > • Your parents are so jealous as they have to sit there with lots of people they don’t trust, hA, > • But you’re shook when you walk down the corridor towards your own suite when the Prince himself jogs up to your side and greets you, > • You do a double take and straighten your back before you can comprehend, > • At a closer look, the prince is tall and slender, but owns a charming boyish grin and flawless skin, home to a small triangle of freckles and warm eyes, making the future king truly approachable and sweet looking, > • You’re about to greet him as if a royal, as you should, but hold yourself back a little, > • it’s Seongwoo’s first day in the palace, it’ll probably be nice to hear a voice not stuck in a formal polite tone, right? It’s Nice That - For Joakim Drescher, mistakes are an integral part of an illustration

Someone once said there are no accidents. That could be true, but we do love mistakes. Jyni Ong, over at It’s Nice That, would appear to agree, at least when it comes to Joakim Drescher’s Motel Universe. Jyni drops the news that Motel Universe is a continuing series of books. Spoiler alerts aside, those of us who have already read Motel Universe can breathe a sigh of relief, considering the cliffhanger ending of the first volume’s intergalactic adventure. There are tons of images here, demonstrating, as Jyni writes, how “Joakim’s work is always vibrant and detailed. He fills the pages with rich colour and imagery. Well-developed and often surreal characters make an appearance, framed by hypnotic backdrops...” What about those mistakes? Let’s hear it from Joakim: “I can’t remember who said this to me, but it was something about style being the camouflage of an artist’s weakness. so as no one knows or even really cares, i have a verse where peter is the dada teacher at hogwarts. in this verse, he is married to myrtle who is still a ghost, but died as an adult. the myrtle blog i was writing with deactivated so i don’t have taylor’s explanation about how it worked, but the ship had a really special place in my heart because of how absolutely in love they where, this is pretty much entirely for myself but anyone is welcome to read it if they’d like. below the cut is a compilation of drabbles or cuts from threads that i want to be able to go back to

i’m also not sure i’ll be able to write with another myrtle because of how much i loved taylor and her portrayal. myrtle developed such interesting relationships with peter and obviously still means a lot to me

the first bit is actually in the typical canon verse where peter is a student and myrtle still died as a student but i wanted to include it all the same. i also want to note that their younger selves did not get along at first in the slightest. myrtle was rude and insulting and peter was easily hurt but eventually they found a rhythm and formed a sort of friendship.

the prompt was non-sexual acts of intimacy, specifically reading a book together

[ When he returns, she holds the book out to him.  The lovely book that made her smile when she  received it had made her head hurt when she  tried to read it. Fixing him with a distant gaze,  she spoke in an equally passive voice. ]

’ Turn the pages for me while I read, please. It makes my                                 head ache when I interact with the                                 living world for too long. ’

[ Without another word, she sits on the thankfully dry  ground –rather a compliment within itself, she  thinks, as she did not flood the place as she knew  he would be coming– and motions for him to join  her. ]

and the book theme leads us into this next bit

   just  before he was meant to leave hogwarts  for  the    holidays, peter  made his way over to the long since    abandoned  (  by students at least  )  girls washroom    on  the  first  floor.  it had occurred to him  during  his    christmas  shopping  that although  she  wasn’t  quite    considered a friend  (  &  she likely didn’t see him as    one either  ),  he felt  the  need,  but  perhaps  simply    want, to pick something out for myrtle  as  well.  she    was always so, herself, & he doubted there were any    that  had  gotten  her a  gift  for  christmas,  let  alone    many who visited her besides him.

                  upon  entering,  he  called  out for her.  once  he  received  no                   response, he assumed she might be elsewhere in the school                   on one of her rare excursions, & so decided to leave the very                   neatly wrapped present on on the the counters where it might                   remain   dry  should  any  flooding  occur.   in   hindsight,   he                   supposed  a book might not have been the best thing to  have                   brought to a girl that frequently flooded the room in which she                   inhabited,  but at the time,  the idea of bringing her something                   to take up at least a few hours of her time seemed nice.

   it  was  a muggle book,  which he supposed was another    unnecessary risk, but he had read it himself  &  thought    it   was  utterly  brilliant.   it  was  adventurous,   slightly    absurd,  but  extremely  entertaining  &  very funny from    what he got out of it. the book was the hitchhiker’s guide    to  the  galaxy by douglas adams,  &  he just hoped  she    enjoyed it. she was dead after all, she could use  a  little    bit  of  cheering  up.  it had a note on it as  well,  for  just    such  an  occasion  &   it  read as  follows  in  absolutely    terrible ( but for once with perfect spelling ) handwriting:

                  Happy Christmas, Myrtle.                   I  wasn’t sure what you would like,   but I thought you might enjoy                   this. Be sure to wait to open it though. I won’t know, or care really                   if you’ve opened it before you’re meant to,  but at least try to hold                   off until Christmas morning.                   From that little rat of a boy,                   Peter

[ every once in a while, myrtle had to leave. the  frozen-over black lake was always her favorite  destination, with it’s ice caps thinning in some  places just enough to see her reflection.

 she was an ugly thing, not worthy of anyone’s time.  no, she reminded herself, that wasn’t right. or  maybe it was. where she stood with peter in terms  of a relationship was an area as opaque as her  skin. she was swimming in murky waters again,  and for the first time in fifty years, she was afraid  of drowning.

 myrtle thought herself a poison as she pretended  like she could feel the glassy ice under her hand.  she traced patterns into the light dusting of snow  that settled along the top, heaving a sigh as she  realized her little drawings were just hideous eyes.

 she couldn’t sleep any more, but if she did, it would  have been in black and white. black, white and a  splash of garish yellow. any other colors didn’t  matter, they couldn’t shock her enough to die.  yellow had.

 scratching out the doodles with her nails that would  never grow, myrtle stood and wiped away any  offending tears. it was christmas, where was her  cheer?

 it was dead like her, she knew that. wandering back  to the castle, she recalled the faint memory of  firelight against the sweeping navy blue of the  ravenclaw common room. she remembered sitting  up all night, wanting to catch anyone who left her a  present. myrtle never caught anyone, for no one  ever did. her presents were given to her when she  went home for the summer.

 floating back into her bathroom, she wondered why she  bothered. so young was she when she died, and so  very scared of death itself, she remained behind. it  was curious parody of life she led, one that, perhaps,  left her a bit less empty than she had been in life.

 at least she had her books. the size of the hogwarts library  had doubled in size since she was alive, and every so  often she could find someone to turn the pages for her.

 musing over what she would read over the break, when she  might actually be able to visit the library during the day,  she nearly missed the package sitting safely on a counter.

 expecting the worst, she did not touch it for a very long  time. she had no faith in hogwarts students any more, and  rather expected some hideous prank. it was hours before  she even dared to read the note.

 her mouth fell open when she did, hanging like an unhinged  basket. she wondered if she should cry before realizing she  couldn’t. she was too busy smiling.

 it always hurt a bit to interact with the living world, but she  ran her hand down the side of the packaging. what it was,  she knew, but not the specifics.

 leaving the gift where it was, she floated to her window. myrtle  knew she would not need to make a trip to the library at all. ]

this next one was a drabble taylor wrote another huge turning point in their relationship with their younger selves. it was a kiss meme, the prompt was ‘ghost kiss’

[ He didn’t have any idea what it was like, to be so  cold and so empty. All Myrtle could feel was  pain in one form or another. She couldn’t touch  things without a searing headache, couldn’t leave,  couldn’t let it go.

 Peter had become her little rat. In him, she poured  every bit of malice and misery she had in her  unaging body. He, likewise, attempted to do the  same, but it never reached her. She could feel if  she tried, but nothing could feel her.

 It was on a Wednesday when she snapped. It was  raining buckets, the lightning flashing behind  stained glass windows that appeared to be crying.  She had been for hours and only stopped so she  could speak clearly.

 What he said didn’t matter, but it sparked a fire in her  she thought long extinguished. Not one of desire but  of unimaginable rage. She rushed at him, taking the  sides of his face in a death-cold grip.

 Myrtle pressed her lips to his. Could he feel it? Could  he feel how sad she was? How all she had left was  bitterness and pain? God she hoped so. Someone  had to, the loneliness was killing her over again.

 She pulled away, releasing him as her eyes filled up  with tears for the millionth time in that decade. ]

’ I’m sorry, Peter. ’

[ And she was gone. Safe in her hiding spot where he  —for once— could not see her cry, she hoped nothing  she said touched him either. Myrtle was sad, she was  lost, but it was a kind of melancholy that one had to  bear alone. She was not so selfish to condemn  someone else to it. ]

what started off the proper marriage. it was a meme “I will be married for 3 days to the first person in my askbox who says "Honey, I'm home"”. i sent it in, and this beautiful thread came about

’ Peter, I feel quite like this is some sick joke. You’re                                      not a child –physically, I can’t                                     say much for your mental state,                                      I truly don’t know—, you                                      wouldn’t do that, right? ’

[ She feels ridiculous either way. ]

’ Is this really binding? I think death has already parted us. ’

              “myrtle,  it’s much too late to change my mind.  i’m afraid               i was bound to you long ago.  & i don’t care if anyone else               sees it as binding. i love you. i have for a long time, & ( if               you’ll let me ) i’d like to have the honour of calling you my               wife.  the  only joke would be a cruel one being played  on               me by the rest of the universe were you to refuse me now.”

’ You bloody idiot, you’ll make me cry and                              smear my makeup! ‘

[ Despite her annoyed tone, she reaches for his  hand. It might hurt a bit if she holds on for too  long, but her need to prove he’s solid, real and  telling the truth is something she cannot  explain. After a moment, she smiles. ]

’ I’m not an idiot, I won’t let you get away. I- I                                 think you’ll make me                                 happy. ‘

    the  sensation  of  her  cool  skin  against  his  own  was     unexpected to say the very least, but to hell if he wasn’t     going to hold onto that fleeting moment of her touch.  so     rarely  was he privy to it that he had learned to  cherish     to  moments when she chose to interact with the  living     world; he knew the effect it had on her.

              “the chance to make you happy is all i’m really asking for.”

’ I haven’t been happy in so long. I imagine I                                    won’t be very good at it. ‘

[ She drops her hand, deciding not to tell him  it’s because she wants to kiss him at the  end of all this without a searing headache. ]

’ You will be able to stand me? I like to think I                                     will make you content. ‘

              “i have this long, haven’t i?”

    his  words  sounded  with  a  concurrent  ( & teasing )  smile.     after  all,  it wasn’t like their meeting had been a  recent  one.     she  had  been so cold to him at first  &  in more  ways  than     one, but for some reason  ( only merlin knew why )  he kept     coming  back.  he  was inexplicably drawn to her at  first,  &     now, he knew there wasn’t anything she could do that would     make him want to leave.

[ She’d never kissed anyone properly before,  it was a miracle it worked out as well as it  did. It required quite a bit of concentration,  making sure that she did not simply pass  through him as she put her arms around his  neck. It was that bit of contact that gave her  enough courage to press her lips to his.  Myrtle knew she was cold —dreadfully so—  but hoped that her utter elation would be  enough for him. Pulling back, she offered a  nervous smile. ]

’ I wanted to practice before the wedding, with my luck I                                              won’t be able to do it right                                              the day of. ‘

    there  had been no forewarning.  there was just the  swift     movement  of  her  lips  to  his.  she was so cold,  &  her     touch  so light he felt as if were he to make  any  sudden     movements she might break apart. even so, he wouldn’t     trade  it  for the world.  he never expected to  be  able  to     kiss  her,  or  hold her  (  at least not in the way he might     with  a  living  woman  )  but knowing she  was  his  was     more  than  enough.  she  made him very  happy,  &  he     could only hope she felt the same.

            “i’m sure it’ll be fine.”

    &  her smile was met with one of his own,  although  his     was significantly more reassuring in nature.

     a  year  had  passed  since  they  had  been  wed.  it  had     been so peculiar, but it seemed  himself  &  his love were     the  only  two that didn’t seem to care that one  was  living     &  one  was  dead.  “til death do us part”  seemed  like  an     overrated phrase anyhow.

              “happy anniversary, myrtle.”

    that  was  when  he  presented her with the  gift.  it  was  a     sunflower, still in the pot too. seemed a bit ironic to give a     living  plant  to a ghost,  knowing that eventually the  plant     would die,  no?  exactly.  this particular sunflower held up     only the appearance of living. in truth, it was neither living,     nor  dead.  it was simply charmed to uphold the image  of     itself  at  the true pinnacle of its beauty,  as if to mirror her.

              “a  sunflower.  i read somewhere that they’re supposed  to  be  a                a  symbol  of  admiration so it seemed fitting that  i  give  one  to                you. & it’s been charmed.  to always remain as beautiful as you.”

    &  with that,  their lips met in a fleeting kiss. but that was     all  they  needed.  their  love  wasn’t  conveyed   through     conventional  means like touch,  but when they  did,  the     intent  was  clear.  he believed she  deserved  the  world.

    he  hadn’t  the  foggiest  idea of what brought it  on,  but  he     would  certainly  be  ｌｙｉｎｇ  if  he  were  to  say  that   he     didn’t  find  the surprise  pleasant.  he was used  to  a  certain     FORCE behind her words  (  it came with the territory of being     her  ＨＵＳＢＡＮＤ  ), but the force behind her kiss was all     too unfamiliar.

    a  smile threatened to surface at the  spontaneity  of it all,     but  instead,  peter  settled  on wrapping his arms  around  her     ever fleeting form, intent on relishing  each  moment it  lasted.

she’s smiling like she’s trying to make up for thirty years of sobbing, and in a way, she is.

her favorited records –scratched nearly beyond repair– play out a big band song that she probably had memorized when she was a teenager now. the words don’t matter, what does is that she’s dancing.

alone at first, as everyone starts that way, but then she’s dancing with him. all of a sudden, everything gets much clearer.

her laugh is drowned out in her ears and she doesn’t seem to realize that she’s the only one carrying on like she still has a heartbeat. as if she gives a damn.

she can flush, she can’t be short of breath, but she pretends she is as she winds her arms around his neck. is she dancing with him or is he just along for her giddy twirling? she doesn’t know but the rest of the guests do.

they’re all watching the horrifying spectacle of a woman gone insane.

she’s watching him again.

when she stops, everyone’s worried she’ll start to cry again. never in all their lives –or deaths– had they seen anything so embarrassing. myrtle rolls her eyes and takes peter’s hand.

she doesn’t wait for an answer before walking away with him in tow. her hand is firmly gripping his like a lifeline, even though she’s the one pulling him onwards.

myrtle says when she finds an empty classroom. the moonlight’s nice, shining through the window, sectioned off by an ebony frame.

’ And I’m not asking now. Dance with me. ’

it’s not a request, but she does give him enough space to pull away. it makes her smile again when he doesn’t.

they look like they’re about to waltz when she realizes there isn’t any music. sighing in defeat, she lets her head rest on his shoulder.

there’s no music, there’s no dancing, but there could be.

pulling back just slightly, she smiles up at him. she’s not alive, but she could be.

gotta have some sad in here so here’s a drabble prompted by † for a kiss to say good bye forever.

well she’s not about to leave him, is she? she shoots a nurse a glare. obviously the woman’s never seen a ghost and her dying husband. the thought makes her stomach twist.

dies. died. will die.

it’s all so final.

it was never like that when she died, it happened so quickly. she looks to him in quiet terror. what if he goes quickly too?

without thinking, she presses a kiss to his lips. she’s in luck, he’s still alive when she does. sitting back, she does not feel accomplished.

sighing, she takes his hand in hers and ignores the stabbing pain. she kisses the back, very gently, wishing her lips were warm.

she sits with him for hours after he stops breathing, she won’t let his hand go. her head hurts so much she thinks she might scream, but she can’t even cry.

she is dead, but cannot die. she is, was and will be, all without him.

and to end on, taylor was given the prompt “peter has died and moved one without you” (obviously as an alternate ending to the above)

We explored the introduction of the character: Bertozzo and thinking about how he is intending to show himself as a character to the audience, understanding that he has different goals such as trying to become friends with them, manipulate them, intimidate them, show them that he’s angry or trying to make them pity him…

I was the first one who performed, I used large and big movements. It was embarrassing for me since I was first... It was actually hard to perform since I have to focus on speaking/changing tone while acting out my body movements.

Here, we tried different body languages, pace, the tone of voice to change the intention of Bertozzi.

We also explored the spacing effect of the performance and we noticed how it affects the performance, the audience’s view and character relationship. It was an interesting process since we got to learn how to engage the audience.

But as we continued, we’d learnt how the use of space, levels and breaking the fourth wall works… It is all about staying in character as we interact with the audiences.

Cailyn’s research is about Paris in 1968 and Vicky’s Anarchist research:

From research, the year 1968 was a difficult time for Dario Fo that I understand. There was a riot happening in Paris, France, spreading to Italy. Because of the political activism (an effort to promote political, economic and/or environmental ideas for improvement with the desire to make improvements with the society), the theatre was also affected and his dislike for the hypocrite governments increases. Not only was that in December 1969 there was a bomb in the centre of Milan. 16 people were killed and another 90 were injured. There was also a bomb nearby where the police blew it up rather than disarming it, causing the clue to also be blown away. This is where the Anarchist comes in and Giuseppe (Pino) Pinelli fell out of the 4th-floor window. But sadly, I only understand this through research. For improvement of the audience's understanding, I think that the there should be some introduction and explanation of the history so that the audiences would get the grasp of what had happened.

Ong did a presentation about the stage acting style of Dario Fo which linked with my topic and that is the Commedia Dell’Arte.

We talked about how we should add background information for the audiences that do not have any knowledge about the Anarchist so that they would understand what the story is about a lot better... We also talked about how we should put in little reference from the audience’s local area so that they can also relate to this play’s topic.

Continuing, we explored the style of Commedia Dell’Arte and we’d realized that each of the Accidental Death’s character can relate to some of the Commedia characters. We did a small workshop for Il Detore, Arlechino, El Capitano and Columbina so we merged the characters together, for example when Vicky and Ong tried to test out the movement of Columbina’s posture as Feletti. We understood that the play was supposed to be performed in a loud and large posture, movements, tone and actions that is extremely eye-catching.

A monologue in chapter 10 to 14.

I would like the audiences to see him (the Maniac) as a mad, friendly, imaginative and an amazing person. If I was the director, I would use a lot of miming on the props; the telephone and the files, showing his imaginative side. I would make him break the fourth wall often; throwing the files out of the window but at the audiences as the maniac tell them sorry (breaking the fourth wall) as they were hit by the paper. It would be nice if the audiences feel the bond with the Maniac, either in a friendly or bittersweet way when he apologizes to them.

We’d explored the idea of what it is like to be a Theater director... And to do that we’ll have to pick out two scenes to explore its TEAM, we will have to direct and find a way for our cast to perform. I must say that this is a very difficult task for me since I dislike forcing people to do stuff and I am also scared that I will be judged for my idea... But I guess I just have to face my fear and work as hard as I can.

The first things I’ve learnt to do as a Director is that I will need to get my cast to understand the play, the scene and each character’s role, goals and personality so that they would know what to do and feel.

We were exploring the idea of stage design. This will involve the use of stage props, decoration and lighting to give the right atmosphere for the audiences to understand. I also noticed how staging can impact the time and the atmosphere; having it play a big part in the play.

We were also exploring the Theatre Context, Presenting Theatre and the Theatre Process within the three days. I’ve learnt about the word vignette in a playscript; about the different chunk of parts in a play... For example, Love and Information contain a large amount of vignette instead of just one plot. But the vignette links!

10/10/2017 - 10/12/2017

Right now we’re looking at the Theme of the play text: Love and Information. On the 10th of October, we were discussing on how to plan and explore the play text. We were looking back at how we were exploring the stage design; how we use the sense of what’s going on within the stage while using questions like: What does the play smell like? What do you think it’ll taste like? What is around you? Just something out of this line...

The theme of Love: How have our attitude to love and changed/our behaviour in love and relationship changed in the last 2012.

Choose 2 vignettes and explore the scene - I’m doing scene 7.

I’ve found out about a French word: Vignette and how it means a chunk of stuff.

We learn about how titles can greatly impact what the scene is about. To let the audiences know about the title, we can use placards, use the narrator and maybe add powerpoints... Though, the title doesn’t always need to be told if the scenes are clearly performed. We were also talking about stage design and imagine the stage/place by using the 5-6 senses and question yourself why. We found out about how vague, unclear and versatile the play is; you can perform the scenes by using improvisation and perform in it many different kinds of ways.

To perform you’ll have to open to interpretation and think about...

The different performance styles: Comical, realism, unnaturalistic...

The theme of the play...

The relationship of the characters...

And to do this, we can do a workshop e.g. a character workshop, a scene workshop... As for a character workshop, we can work on devising and stay in character as we do so...We were also looking at a style called the Movement Sequence. We were exploring the style by having each character move in pattern as if it’s a Dance move. As we do so, we were doing it with music (it’s easier to do since there’s a beat to it), letting other say the part for you (easier to focus on the performance but it doesn’t fit the situation) and you saying the part for yourself (best option, it’s easier to reveal emotions, but harder to perform since you cannot focus on one thing. Though to speak, the attention will be taken off from the body language but to the expression and voice). The Movement Sequence let us explore body language and how movements and gesture can show feelings, emotions and tension. Movement Sequence is “fun to watch, but hard to understand.”Here’s the question of the day: When you’re exploring Love and Information in an unnaturalistic style, does it fit? Is it effective? Does it reveal new things? If yes, then what?

Within this week, we experiment on different scenes in the playtext of Love and Information.

What I’ve learnt from Ong’s directing:

The actors/actress should also know and understand the scene. We do this by reading and summarise everything. We explored Flashback; using this way of letting 2 people speak as the other 2 act and try to deliver the meaning through action (plus moving montage), acting to what the 2 speakers are saying. We want to make it seems like a dance.

Letting the audiences see the actors moving props makes the scene seems too clunky and distracting, leading to the atmosphere being destroyed.

We were also talking about how we want to use lighting to represent different places. E.g. Green light to show river...

The colour of light will change in different scenes.

Music was added in the play.

In Vicky’s directing:

Act as if something had happened before.

Rely on tone/voice and facial expressions.

Adding sub characters to build up the scene.

In Caitlin’s directing:

Staging plays a big part as we perform.

We can use the projector which is similar to lighting; it changing the scene and giving out atmosphere.

Light focus on character to show state or focus. In the play, light shining on a character shows that she is fully awake. And another character’s light will be dim to show that his/her mind is asleep.

In my own directing:

Trying out immersive approach/theatre.I want to show a bond but the characters are too far apart from each other which destroyed my goal. Change staging to In-the-round. Walking around the audiences in the dark; feel what the autistic kid feels. Trying out: having the character to not move which doesn’t change anything.

Everything changed when we gather the bully up and it finally shows the bonds and increases the aggression.

The autistic kid will just sit on the ground which shows the level of who is in control and that is the bullies.

A = The theatre in context: The tradition and culture.

Show your good research and understanding of the theatre tradition. You will need to explain and describe the theatre tradition by adding appropriate sources and put the information into good context.

B = Theatre process: Practical research and approach to application.

This is the part where so many other IB students lost points on and it’s one of the easiest bit to do. So what we have to do here is to just describe “HOW AND WHY” you are doing or chose this.

C = Presenting theatre: This does not involve what I told you (future me) that the quality of the presentation doesn’t matter. This meant that you need to use your tone and body to demonstrate what is going on/

D = Theatre in context: The Learner

This, you will need to compare the chosen theatre tradition with a different one. You would also need to talk about the impact of this theatre tradition to yourself and what it made you think.

Now, after looking at the research presentation, we were looking at how plays were performed, designed and presented back 400 years ago in old England.

I found out that when an actor receives a role, they will just be given a role of paper.

Back then there is no director in the old days and that they have very little time to do the stage and memorise everything.

Talking about staging and how you’re able to engage the audiences.

Endon stage = You can only engage the audience by looking at one direction.

Thrust stage = There are three directions that the actor can face. It’s easier to engage. More of a storytelling way.

Elizebethan theatre - looking at the camera does break the fourth wall but it does not break the emotion that is displayed.

I’ve talked about architectural style before, and the differences between a ranch, a bungalow, and midcentury modern home design. And along the SF Peninsula, you can find every architectural style, from French Chateau to American Farmhouse. I’ve loved seeing them all in the houses I’ve viewed!

Once inside a house, however, interior design and decor takes over. Ever wonder what your own style might be called? Here are a few of the more popular design styles of today explained.

* Midcentury Modern - This style matches the major architectural themes, with simple lines and open arrangements. Not quite minimalist, it favors simplicity, functionality, and natural shapes. Features molded plastic, stained wood, and aluminum. * Industrial - This style favors the use of exposed steel, exposed ceilings, concrete, and lots of glass. The appearance is raw and utilitarian. Colors are solid and furnishings feature straight legs and clear lines. * Farmhouse - Think painted wood, practical elements, and rustic pieces.
