season 3 episode 15 entitled “the heart is a lonely hunter” is, if im remembering correctly, the first time the show really brings up shawns “ladies man” status and subsequently deconstructs it

shawn is never seen committing to one girl (and as we later will find out in season 5, he has a strict 2 week rule which honestly shouldnt have even existed after this episode but boy meets worlds continuity was a mess so i digress. although... i’ll get more into that theory later). anyone even remotely familiar with shawn hunter as a character knows why; the boys got some serious abandonment issues. his mother left, his father was a mess and ultimately left, you can even argue to an extent shawn felt abandoned by cory once he started dating topanga (and well all know that manifests itself in the wedding episode) - which, to add on to that, shawn also finds himself completely latching on to that relationship because theyre the only stable loving relationships hes known

so anyway, youve got this episode where shawns got his first like, real crush on a girl. its not just “she’s pretty lets make out”. he actually wants to date her, he likes her, but hes got this playboy reputation and he doesnt know how to do anything else, because hes too afraid too. so hes got this reputation and he doesnt know date someone without it just being physical, which leads to her dumping him because theyre just too different for her liking. she wants someone like cory. and its not that shawns a bad guy but like... obviously he and cory have very different tactics when it comes to dating. 

which leads me to topanga laying into him about how shawn doesnt understand women and he only wants one thing out of them. shawn isnt a bad guy. his intentions are never to just use women up and dispose them when hes done. its not about them, its about him. its because shawns scared of getting hurt. its because shawns scared of getting left again. he doesnt want to get attached because its his experience that getting attached just leads to heartbreak. AND on top of that, you have shawn basically admitting that he doesnt think he belongs with girls like dana, who are nice and wholesome and sweet. 

you have this scene where he flat out says he belongs with “fast flashy girls”. the boy has never had a high opinion of himself and it shows

BUT HERES THE KICKER BABY (yall really thought i was gonna go on a shawn hunter rant and not discuss the blatant gayness that coats every fiber of his being...)

that very scene i linked, you have turner telling shawn that most important relationship in his life (cory) is with someone who is not fast and flashy, but in fact the very type of person shawn doesnt think hes worthy of. HE ALREADY HAS IT! HE’S HAD IN THE WHOLE TIME!!

“this is your best relationship. you listen to each other and you really trust each other”

the implications that shawn is going around with all these different girls and nothing ever sticks but his best friend is the relationship he’s been looking for all along ??? HELLO ??

and is it any wonder that even after dana and this breakthrough shawn had made he still couldnt commit to any girl until angela? 

could it be because of his repressed homosexual feelings for his best friend cornelius matthews who was happily taken so shawn had two things going against him there on that one 

IN CONCLUSION shawn hunter was running through women to distract himself from his own feelings of inadequacy on a multitude of levels and i have more to say about shawn and relationships beyond this episode but i’ll end this here
