Chapter 1: The wolf and the Dog
Tell me, O Mousai, the story of deceit, love and death, of when the man-monster was away, a suitor plotted to steal his own built throne but stole the heart of Ithaca’s prince instead.
Sing, goddess daughters of Zeus, of the prince and the suitor, of hearts softened by love and broken by bow not of Eros.
Tell us the story of Telemachus and Antinous, suitor and prince, wolf and dog.
And let their tale be legendary.
But before all of that, Antinous had been in storming in the halls. Tell us muse, of the plan and the start of deceit.
Antinous threw a stool at the wall.
The wood clattered and splintered against the stone, echoing throughout the palace halls. Making the royal dog—the old mutt of the royal family, bark in alarm, disturbed from its sleep on the floor. Antinous barely glanced at the aged creature as it scampered away.
For too long he’s been in this palace. Two long years, he has been waiting for the wife of the king Odysseus, Penelope, to weave her shroud. How long does it take to weave a simple shroud? He wasn't actually sure, but he was certain it wasn't that long. The queen must take a husband, Odysseus was dead.
Penelope was proving to be too stubborn; he needed a new plan, a new angle.
He paced down the hall. He could hear the clinking of goblets and the laughter of his fellow men further down. They were draining the wine cellar of wine in the megaron*.
He didn’t join them. Idiots, he thought. Ithaca needed a new king, and it mustn’t be them. If any of them ruled Ithaca was destined for ruin — He had to rule.
