the thing they don’t tell you about actively learning about how systems and institutions work, even casually, is that in any realismish fiction dealing with said systems you end up spending a not-insignificant amount of time going “no that’s not how it works” or “no you can’t do that” or “no that’s not a sick hack but actually a crime” or “no actually that would be obvious to pretty much any competent member of the profession” or my favorite “no I think your main character is just kind of bad at their job”
I understand suspension of disbelief and the very real need sometimes to balance realism and story, that’s not what this is not what this post is about. I’m not here to blame writers or producers for making the creative and practical decisions that are necessary to get any price of art to the finish line. far be it from me to try and claim expertise or worse go all cinemasins about it. this post is about the purely personal and very annoying problem I’ve inflicted upon myself by subscribing to too many lawyer and doctor and infrastructure youtube channels.
