Greece arrived at Eurovision in 1974 and for the most part had songs with traditional sounding instruments. They had several years in the top 10 and a few near the middle not really troubling the bottom too much. The 2000 years were dynamite for the Greeks who qualified for the finals each year from 2004 to 2015. The wheel then fell off a bit.

When looking for a favourite I was a bit swayed by things. I chose Watch my dance because of a fusion of traditional with modern, good and bad, day and night. Does it fit together well? Maybe not so much, but I like each of the performances individually. I like the presentation of the Greek dance as well, it makes me sentimental.

Introducing: Greece's contribution to the semi-finals of the "Eurovision" competition, "Watch My Dance." I had no idea such a thing existed, but it is apparently akin to the Superbowl here, with some American Idol thrown in. The songs are written just for the contest, and some of them are pretty painful to watch. Everyone gathers together with their friends to root for their country (42 nations compete). The votes are tallied via text messages, but the catch is that you can't vote for your own country. This year, all the finalists compete in Dusseldorf and whoever wins gets to host the competition next year. Everyone is already planning all sorts of craziness for the finals on Saturday night. I guess my last night in Greece will most certainly be a uniquely European experience. While watching this, ahem... masterpiece, last night, my Greek friend kept nudging me saying "IT'S US!" I guess Greece almost always makes it to the finals, but I just can't wrap my head around the atrocious rap portion of this song. Regardless, this performance has Greece written all over it. Zorba, meet break-dancing.
