ferry language / dialect / accent info. speaking of ferry growing up in wales for the first part of his life, that's a main source of why his accent is so... particular, for lack of a better term. he was raised bilingual — his mum feels very strongly about keeping the welsh language alive, so she only spoke it at home, and she homeschooled ferry in welsh. his father speaks a broad geordie dialect, so that's the only english ferry really learned at home. he knew other english speakers around town, but he was a pretty shy kid, so he didn't talk to them much.
when he was eight, that's when mum and dad decided durham would "give the boy a better chance" — and dad was offered more pay in the mines there than the mines in merthyr, so he took the deal. when they moved to durham, ferry had to enrol in public school, and the kids were pretty ruthless in teasing everything welsh about him. he got called 'sheep-shagger' more than his name, even when he started going by the nickname instead of correcting kids and teachers on pronouncing 'fferyll.' so he adapted. he leaned as hard as possible into the geordie dialect to fit in. he practiced the right slang and the right mannerisms in the mirror after school, he studied his father, he studied the other kids. and it didn't take him long to fit in, at least in how his voice sounded. they moved on to bully him for other things.
nowadays, he hasn't really... lost the welsh accent. he buries it, but he can bring it out on command when he wants to, and it comes out involuntarily as soon as he speaks to his mum or anyone else with a strong welsh accent.
