Blood of the Basilisk Chapter 8
Nadani: You cracked your skull open.
Kota: I didn't mean to.
Nadani: *EERILY HIDDEN RAGE*
Which honestly, fucking mood. There is rage that comes with people getting hurt and being powerless to do anything about it, and it only intensifies when the person either downplays it or acts as though it was their fault. Anger because you couldn't help and they're giving you know avenue to meaningfully help even now, anger because they can't point you in a direction of someone to fuck up over their pain.
I am a giggly mess over how fucking adorable Pyter was keeping Kota laying down on the bed by glomping on her and saying "Nadani said!"
Darracie is a fucking card and I love her. Cranky medics really do just do something to my brain.
Also lol at Kota's first meeting with her new boss being while she's in a hospital bed with a cracked skull getting called a reckless idiot.
Lou is also a delight so far, though we'll see how this goes. I'm hoping it goes in a direction of "too old for this gay pining shit, just fuck already, here look I only made one bed." That or just entirely unhelpful over their relationship troubles and just sitting there with popcorn.
Fully fair that Norga won't be covering for Kota over more shit, but also, I don't give a fuck that the macguffin got a little banged up in the process of Kota going to help Pyter, so it doesn't mean too much to me that she covered in the first place, and so not super impressed by her "I covered for you" comment in the first place.
Welp these couple of chapters have been an excellent activity instead of doing the prep for the game I'm GMing tonight but gotta help make dinner before the game starts so off I go.

Bloood of the Basilisk Chapter 35
SHE'S BLUE DA BA DEE DA BA DI!!!
Sorry not sorry.
But she issss! And Kota has some white scales now! Colour coordinated inhuman power couple of the century!
I love that Pyter looks the same but can breathe hellfire now.
This little family unit could rule worlds if they were so inclined, and (un?)fortunately for the worlds out there they aren't interested in doing so.
They've got one hell of a journey ahead of them. I wonder if they'll stay on Proximus helping with the clearing up for a particularly long time or if they'll be gone the next time somewhere needs a trouble shooter. Either way I bet they'll have some wild adventures together. And it will be together. Because they are in love and adorable and ahhhhhhhhh.
I loved Pyter jumping back onto the bed at the end like "Done kissing?" Poor lad is already so done (but kinda happy about) his momma and his Dani being too busy kissing to give him cuddles.
It's such a cute ending and best of all it feels like a new beginning. Leaves me a little bitter sweet that there isn't another adventure in this world already waiting for me to jump into. I would 110% read anything from their next/first official case, to Lou and Pyter engaging in increasingly complex looney tunes-esque shenanigans to over Pyter's pantry access.

Blood of the Basilisk Chapter 30
I think most of my thoughts on this chapter can be summed up as that wild not quite voluntary screaming as you go down a massive drop on a roller coaster and the breathless shellshock that comes with the next five drops two loop de loops and several 5 G turns.
I'm glad Lou basically has her own militia of friendship and favours on hand as a starting point for allied forces.
Nadani came in clutch with getting Pyter back into shape which is good because it was very hard to read with the continuing beat of "My boy! My Poor Baby! HELP HIM!" pounding through my head.
The second we came to how Nadani ended up with Pyter's blood I wanted to slam my head into a wall because DUH! He scratched the shit out of her while bleeding himself. It wasn't even like a subtle event. We were told they were both bleeding. Fucking hell. Why has this felt like a mystery?
I have a whole new appreciation for this soldiers stone Kota made. I'm curious about Lou's eyes getting big over it. Is she just surprised and happy about such a convenient way of finding Kota, or did Kota put some massively fucking gay design/magic signature on it that declares her undying love in a mostly dead tongue? I would not put it past her honestly.
Pyter and Nadani are right from a main character plot progressing perspective, but also they are going to give me and Lou ulcers with this gung-ho lets teleport in and storm the gates attitude.

Blood of the Basilisk Chapter 26
The morning after sequence is so sweet. I loved Nadani's quiet contemplations over Kota as she got dressed, both the observations about how Kota hides the signs of her non-human heritage, and her trying to parse out her own emotions. I interpreted the scene as Nadani experiencing a desire for intimacy. The type that comes from being vulnerable and accepted wholly in return. Sex can be and might very be the most common way of sharing such a feeling, but its hardly the only way.
I'm curious to see if Nadani is going to see sex as a convenient mode of expressing a certain level of intimacy in a way Kota is familiar with; a tool in her arsenal that she gets enjoyment from because of what it allows her to share with her partner rather than because she feels desire for the act itself. Or if she's going to find other ways of expressing intimacy and care without trying to engage in something that she never really wants in the way Kota does. Or if she realises she's demi like Dura. Or if her experience really is a trauma response. Idk. I like imagined options one and two best and frankly think one seems most likely at this juncture.
Especially since it seems like Kota wants to be slammed down big style and Lou has definitely got Kota pegged as someone who likes to get treated rough.
Speaking of Lou, I liked the fact that she's as old as potters wheels and domesticated horses and older than the precursor to ancient Greece/about 1500 years older than the written word was used to be like "QUEER PEOPLE EXIST AND HAVE BEEN EXISTING THE WHOLE TIME KIDDOS!" Truly fantastic.
I also really liked that Lou took the time to make sure Nadani knows that even if she does begin developing feelings of sexual desire or just happens to want sex for other reasons that it will be fine and normal and not make her the same as anyone who has used her before. That's probably gonna be important for Nadani to think on, especially if/when it turns out Kota wants to get fucking railed until she can't walk or form sentences.
Another cool part of that conversation was the acknowledgement that Nadani has some of Pyter's magic and they have bonded in some which way. Perhaps from the moment they met on the Bloody Aether since it was such a charged moment of Pyter and Kota being like "oh fuck no" about Nadani's enslaved status.
FINALLY ANSWERS FOR THE PENDULUM.
Sorta.
Is it a fucking bomb? Did Thilde give my baby a bomb? Bitch better hope not, and if she did then gods above and below it better have been an accident or I'm tearing down the walls of reality to make her drink bleach.
I need to go read the next chapter immediately to resolve this cliff hanger.

Blood of the Basilisk Chapter 25
Pyter is the bestest boy for helping to keep Nadani grounded as best he could while she was in shock and waiting for his momma. I hope he gets plenty of lemon curd with dinner tonight.
Also it is cute as fuck that he seems to make himself weightless as people change positions in order to make things easier. I wonder how many times Kota stumbled or fell before he got into that habit.
Kota did pretty good helping break through the shell of Nadani's shock between the story of her own reaction to her first kill, and giving her a physical outlet to help get things moving.
“I’m used to hearing children curse the fire for being hot.” is such a baller line and Lou is fucking great throughout that entire conversation. I like that Kota knows it even if its begrudging recognition in the moment.
If it weren't for the very sleepy cat in my lap I would have been bouncing in my seat the moment the door knock sounded, because ofc it would be Nadani in this situation.
Kota handled this situation like an absolute champion and I adore her for it. She's so gentle with Nadani and so kind and concerned without being at all condescending. The gift she gave Nadani letting her feel just how loved she is damn near made me cry.
Pyter is the funniest lil dude in this scene huffing and grumbling about while these queer dumbasses finish their big emotional conversation and finally pick a sleeping position so that he can get cuddled in and sleep himself.
The three of them cuddled up and sleeping soundly together is the most adorable chapter ending.

Blood of the Basilisk Chapter 21
This chapter was SO FUCKING QUEER! Top quality stuff.
I love that one of Pyter's primary ways of helping make people feel better is to activate Cat-Mode and get scritches and cuddles while he purrs like a little engine. Lil dude knows what is up.
Dura remains an absolute delight. The glimpse into orc history was cool as fuck but more than that,
ACE NADANI! ACE DURA'S UNCLE! DEMI DURA!
My little ace heart is fucking feasting.
Also I hope Dura gets lots of cuddles and kisses from Uloth when she gets home for pointing out how Guthrie leaned hard into every single one of Nadani's insecurities about getting re-enslaved and got her really wound up. That was Very Helpful to have explicitly pointed out to Nadani. I love her for that.
The queer delights continued with wise cracking poly Lou distracting Kota from her panic spiral with inuendos. Lou truly keeps getting better and better. 110% made up for Kota not sticking around to help out in the semidaem ward.
I'm glad that with a little time to breathe and a little nudging to get some perspective on how they were both too wound up to communicate effectively this afternoon Kota and Nadani finally got to talk about the demon lord thing.
I was very flippant when I said it in the last post but holy shit Guthrie could outright be a demon in disguise. I don't know if she's the demon lord outright though. If she was then why all this playing around poking and prodding at her emotions instead of just taking her or something? I suppose when it comes to demon lords there is quite a range for the level of pest they can be while they get their plans in order though... Also I keep thinking of that random elf that glared at Kota back at Thilde's office. The set up is pretty clearly for Guthrie to be some kind of bad news, she's almost too enticing a target for suspicion. Maybe she's just an arsonist? Maybe I'm waaaay over thinking shit and she is the demon lord just getting her kicks in... Lots to think on while I get ready for bed.

Blood of the Basilisk Chapter 16
There were other things to focus on last chapter but the start of this chapter really give you space to sit there and go "wow, Kota cannot catch a break."
We have seen her outside of her house exactly twice since arriving on Proximus. The day she arrived and last chapter when she went to Norga to whatever fancy magic gate they're building. And both days someone tried to murder her. Fucking wild.
I agree with her resigned expectation that prison isn't gonna do shit to loosen the assassin's tongue.
Pyter is fucking adorable when he gets annoyed at her hat being in the way of his snuggling up to Kota in greeting when she gets home.
He's ten times more adorable when he outright laughs at his gay disaster momma. She fully forgot how to use stairs and ate shit just because— Actually you know what there is no "Just Because" here, I think its perfectly acceptable for a sapphic woman to loose her mind when she walks outside and sees her crush swinging an axe in a tank top with suspenders hanging from the waist of tailored trousers.
Thank you Molly for Nadani's continuing journey into being a butch icon.
And thank you for delicious and complexly layered ace content. It'd be so easy given her traumas to just say Nadani isn't interested in sex because she's been forced into so much of it, so taking the time to describe how sex has always just been disinteresting and something transactional rather than indulgent on the rare occassions Nadani could leverage it instead of having it used against her added so much richness to her experience. I know there are some folks who come to the ace community after experiencing sexual violence and so it would have a perfectly valid avenue to take. I just think its nice to see an ace narrative where its intrinsic to the character without it stemming from a source of negativity or leaving strong implications that it's the result of someone being/having been broken in some manner.
Also I am obsessed with the idea of an asexual feeling someone else's sexual attraction because of magic and getting to go "Oh so THAT'S what everyone is on about. I kinda get it now. They can keep it."
Not to mention she's not feeling just anyone's attraction, she's feeling Kota's attraction to her.
It's the kind of thing that must be so trippy for all sorts of telepaths and empaths in fiction but like the spice of a character feeling something they've never really experienced for themselves before is so fucking cool. I have some fucking ideas spinning in my brain right now. Ace characters feeling sexual attraction, allosexuals feeling the lack of it, eggs having their "oh" moment when they realise that their thoughts and feelings line up much more closely with other genders than the thoughts and feelings of people who have the same assigned gender as them. Good. Fucking. Food.
Don't think that I was so distracted as to miss the fact that Pyter is the magical hinge here. That little goober has decided Nadani is family and is waiting for his Momma and Nadani to catch the fuck up.
I bet Lou figures it out before them. She might already have it figured out and hasn't said anything either because she thinks it would be too ridiculous for them not to know, or because she thinks the only way these idiots don't freak out is if they figure shit out themselves. Either way its not like she's wrong.
I fucking loved the whole forging process of the necklace Kota made Nadani. I am a little concerned how Nadani will take the gift. She has enough magic and a teacher she can turn to in order to confirm that the necklace is just a protective ward and nothing that would leave her beholden to Kota is she is worried enough, but like. Idk. It may not even be a big deal, she might just like the gesture.
All in all a really cool chapter that has left me plenty to think on.

Blood of the Basilisk Chapter 15
Opening the chapter by repeating the lead up to the stabbing attempt from Kota's point of view was fantastic because 1. the tension of knowing what was coming and 2. I had to go do boring life stuff between the start of this chapter and the end of chapter 14 and so this was a great little previously on but with fun new information more relevant to Kota and how she sees the world.
Also Kota's sunnies were described a stained glass spectacles, which evokes a very different image to goggles and so I have landed on the steampunk-ish goggles for the cave elf a while back.
Kota's ability to sense that she was being watched and her growing frustration over it, while I knew it was Nadani, was entertaining and also gave us those hints of why this could be a bad/discomforting habit for them. Kota deserves privacy, but also Kota's got a finely tuned instinct for noticing when she is being watched for a damn good reason, if she were to get used to that feeling of being observed it could be dangerous for her.
It did work out in this case though because of the semi mysterious magical empathic connection thing and that's still a point of curiousity but the thing that really kinda pinged in my brain was how there was no descriptions of Pyter feeling or trying to ease Kota's anxiousness at being observed, and no description of Pyter also looking around for an observer. Sure it could just be a case of not wanting to dilute a moment by adding in another characters actions and feelings as well as managing word economy, but like the silence is deafening. Our boy can definitely tell it is Nadani's magic and so is totally chill.
I feel Kota's frustration with the cultist assassin and their insistence on playing the pronoun game SO deeply.
Lou is a delight when she's being like "I'm too old for you to not to be a child." It's also just a fun little detail that she likes her food spicy. Possibly spicy as fuck depending on Nadani's tolerance and honestly I think its funniest if Lou likes a moderate level of spice for ease (but will take extra hot where she can get it) but then Nadani just has 0 tolerance.
There is something that has the potential to be so deeply deeply unhealthy about Nadani's developing feelings for Kota given that Kota and her home represent stability and safety and respect that Nadani hasn't had before so its really heartening to see Lou tell her to try getting out of the damn house once in a while and giving examples of ways skills she picked up as a slave could be used in mundane situations to help give her a new frame of reference to at least consider her path so that when she does choose Kota its meaningful and not just a coping mechanism.

Blood of the Basilisk Chapter 11
It's taken me waaaay to long to really pick up on the cinderella/pretty woman like themes of this plot but this chapter really kinda made something click in my brain. Probably all the buying of clothes.
Hardly the most important thing in the chapter though. That actually happened right up front in the form of Pyter being a Proper Little Gentleman. He politely ate from Nadani's hand and didn't get his head stuck in the lemon curd pot this time.
It's hilarious to me how much better behaved he is for Nadani. I can imagine the logic of it being along the lines of "I like her but she's choosing to be here so I have to be nice. Momma however, is momma and never going anywhere AND she folds easier anyways."
I'm curious to meet the newly hired orc runner girl and glad to hear Lou is cool and practical enough not to have any elven superiority nonsense. I grinned at her "You've been very generous and I've been very stingy" comment.
I'm glad getting new clothes was a positive if a little overwhelming an experience for Nadani, and even gladder that it became another way to show how different Kota's generosity is to former owner's possessiveness/entitlement. Especially after the small double take that came when Nadani saw Kota had gifted her a knife.
It's not the exact situation but there's something that reminds me of poetry in the gifting of the knife. Giving someone a knife to defend themself even if the person they may feel the need to defend themself against is you (not that Kota ever intends to be, or seems to be in danger of becoming someone Nadani would have to defend herself from but she can't be sure Nadani truly accepts that).
Nadani's relationship with her body is definitely a point of interest in reading so far. It's not so much that she'd ashamed of it, its that she doesn't like what other people imagine when they look at it. She doesn't want people being lecherous about her but she's aware that with a body type like hers people are inclined to look if she isn't careful about wearing modest dress. It's a specific flavour of dysphoria where it's her ability to draw what she deems negative/unwanted attention that makes her dislike her body. I think its a pretty common experience in the trans and ace corners of the queer community as well as for people who have been abused or victimised for their looks for whatever reason.
There is a pretty clear cut reason why Nadani would be feeling that way what with her past being used as a sex slave, but the writing is just so that it kinda makes me wonder if there is also an undercurrent of Gender Stuff™. They aren't always mutually exclusive. Though it may just be giving me those vibes because I'm nonbinary and Molly (author) is trans so that feeds into my reading of the situation.
Kota's reaction to Nadani's body in that modest but slim fitting bodice was certainly fun. It was also very interesting that Nadani wasn't too discomforted by it and told Kota she didn't feel objectified by her visible bout of being a gay disaster. I wonder if its just because she's started to accept deep down that Kota does respect her autonomy or if its because of the way she's been developing feelings for Kota. More likely than not its some combination of both, but its gonna be a good time exploring either way.

Blood of the Basilisk Chapter 10
There is so much smoothly incorporated world building about the magic system of the world in this chapter it's truly fucking amazing.
Importantly none of it feels like an info-dump. It's all tidily and skillfully woven into conversation about the state of Kota's health and how magic can be applied to her healing process.
I loved the discussion of how magic from different sources (eg. divine vs. arcane vs. primal) handle the task differently and how they can't always be used in congruence for certain tasks such as healing because the vibes are so freaking different.
Also some fucking A+ "healing magic is actually a form of low key body horror" content. Blood in bruises forcing its way back into your veins and such. I love it.
It was also just really cool to get an explanation of why Kota is so special within her agency, and that glimpse of her history when she compared her current injuries to getting swiped at by a giant.
It's fun that Lou made lemonade and in personal reality she made it as a way to make sure Kota would drink more liquid instead of just grudgingly drinking water when she needed it or when it was offered. Lou knows all the tricks to make people eat healthy and what they can handle.
I'm glad Pyter didn't claw up Nadani this time around. I'm torn between feeling bad for the distress he's in and thinking its very sweet that he has to be cuddled while his momma is just across the room getting healed.
Darracie remains a fucking G. I like how matter of fact she is about the fact that Pyter will bite her apprentices hands off if they try shooing him and that she won't try and stop the little guy. She's less cranky now that its the next day and not an active medical emergency with paperwork but she's still got that tiny hint of edge. Not so much as to keep her from explaining stuff about how the process works for healing mages and why Kota is a valuable asset to the Grimmani to Nadani with little to know sass, but enough to maintain a respectable air of no-nonsense.

Blood of the Basilisk Chapter 9
I like Lou. She has a cool bittersweet backstory and she makes tasty sounding food. It is prime soup season where I live and honestly creamy (coconut) chicken soup with pepper oil, mushroom, and egg sounds fucking delicious right about now.
Her recipe is almost as impressive as her perceptiveness. Lou really did find her calling with being a caretaker. I laughed a little when she told Nadani to eat downstairs so that Kota wouldn't complain about getting her serving "infant style."
Nadani's own little backstory drop was as heart breaking as one would expect given her lifestyle. Just so many layer of sad and fucked up folded into how she masked her emotions, and examined the fear she had felt seeing Kota get hurt, and her point of comparison for how Kota and Pyter napped together.
Pyter was such a sweetheart helping Nadani wake up Kota. I want to place a lil smooch on his lil forehead.
What I really really want right at this moment is for a woman with a deep voice to be reading me a story. Ideally this one, but quite frankly a woman with a deep voice could just read me the phone book and I'd be like "thank you ma'am." Super jealous of Kota and Pyter in this moment.
Honestly I saw Nadani being coy about her deep voice and immediately started going through a rollerdex of deep voiced women in my brain trying to pin down what kinda of deep voiced woman she'd be, cause like some just have a baseline low register, and some have that really smokey thing going on. My brain ran the gamut from Mary Elizabeth Winstead to Shohreh Aghdashloo though I gotta say Lana Parrilla was the very first voice to come to mind before I started really putting thought into things. I do not have a current answer for a voice claim and likely never quite will.

Blood of the Basilisk Chapter 1
Kota made a small gesture with her free hand, flinging a mote of her own magic into the mage’s spell form, shattering it.
So, bare with me here. There is this gesture Lou Wilson makes when he casts counterspell as Pinocchio in Neverafter. A sort of combination between a dismissive wave and a hand held in a STOP postion. More importantly there is a kind of swagger Lou Wilson has as he makes this motion.
I have absolutely mentally transposed that swagger onto Kota and I mean it in the MOST complimentary way possible. The way she fucking launched herself into this battle, used her momentum to cleave into a guy upon landing and then started slinging spells around? Honestly? Hot as fuck.
