summary — the many times you felt loved by him and the one where a confession happened.
pairing — dazai osamu (w/ gender-neutral reader)
tags — fluff (kind of), utilization of the friends to lovers trope, slightly proofread, 2.1k words ; one-shot
tagging — @toorurs
note — i literally haven’t written for him for years now and i swear i lost my mind and pulled my hair,, i could have done this better !?
Tumblr media
Dazai is unpredictable.
In more ways than one, he is erratic, able to conceal his intentions beneath that long trench coat of his, tucked in the loose parts of his bandages, hidden somewhere only he can see. He is the definition of an enigma, he is more than a puzzle, not just a paradox that continues to exist despite death being the only companion and comforting thing to him—a man of mystery that is better left unknown.
“My, you always look as ethereal and beautiful as a lotus blossom.” The dark-haired man says as he holds your hand in his, his finger delicately tracing the lines of your palm, and his eyes looked softer than usual, his gaze holding something that lies between the line of affection and seduction. Sparkles and flowers seem to bloom behind him, the background of the cafe fading and turning into a plain pink one with hearts that float around his figure.
(Flirty.)
He’s fluent in the language of amorous words laced with playfulness accompanied with gentle touches and slow caresses on your skin. He doesn’t hesitate in getting close, invading your space and going over the line, and maybe he’ll show that he is into you but only a fool would think of his words as genuine affection meant for you and only you.
“My eternal light to the darkness, would you be willing to—” However, he’s unable to finish his sentence as you take your hand back from him, offering him a smile instead as you subtly set a distance between the both of you—as if you were telling him to never cross the line, to stay at an arms’ distance.
“Good morning, Dazai. What brings you here to the cafe?”
Fortunately, you weren’t a fool.
“Ah, rejection again, I see.” The pink background that blooms behind me seemingly shifts into a dark one as the man’s expression contorts into a mix of sadness and disappointment, all displayed in an overly dramatic way; his form is slumped, faux tears brimming in the corners of his eyes, and his lips are in a pout. The sound of a short (mirth) laughter is heard from you—you’ve gotten used to this sight of him, of his dramatic expressions, and flirty approaches just to ask you something ridiculous.
“I’m here for you.” He says.
(And persistent.)
You have witnessed evidence of his persistence expressed in his words and actions every time he’s free from any of his work and he comes to the cafe you work at (his definition of free is escaping from his responsibilities and choosing to slack off). He’ll always take the opportunity to hold your hand, whisper such affectionate words only one would say to their lover, and he’ll kiss your skin so gently as if it was made from glass.
That was what happened in the first meeting between you and him—first day on your work in this cafe and just as you were serving the order of this loud group that the owner is acquainted with, you caught the eye of the man covered in bandages and dressed in a somewhat messy yet orderly way. Then you know how it went and from then on, Dazai doesn’t let the chance to bother you slip from his grasp.
But you don’t fall for it, never would you. You’re not supposed to and you’re not going to. He has said such similar things to other people who he deems beautiful or attractive, he has touched others and tainted them with his caresses the same way he did with yours, his lips have felt the softness of others’ skin, not only yours. You’d be stupid enough to think that there’s something more lingering in the depths of his voice, something different that tugs at his tone and threatens it to break.
The two of you are just friends, maybe even less than that.
“Where’s Kunikida?” You ask him, eyes roaming around to look for a single strand of golden but there was nothing. You failed to notice the falter in the expression of the man before you, tension seeping into his features for a moment before it eases at the mention of another man’s name. You continue, “Are you slac—” only to be interrupted by the sound of the door chime ringing followed by a set of heavy footfalls.
A loud shout of Dazai’s name is heard, echoing off the brick-patterned walls of the place, as Kunikida enters. There was a furious look on his face, nose fuming as he spotted the one he was looking for and as soon as he did, Kunikida smacked the back of Dazai’s head. There goes it, you know how this would unfold, how everything would happen—you’re used to it, having already seen this scene enough times to tell how it would end: Kunikida will scold Dazai, calls him with a new nickname (it’s President of Wasted Bandages this time), drags him outside but before that, he’ll apologize on behalf of his co-worker’s behavior, and you’ll wave at them as they leave.
“Why do you always come to ruin good moments, Kunikida? Do you not wish to see me happy?”
“Happy?! Maybe if you stop slacking off, you'll be happy.”
You could hear their distant argument and you heave out a sigh when they disappear from your sight, the smile fading from your lips as the loneliness looms over your figure. Silence rests heavily on your shoulders and you ignore the ache in your chest.
Tumblr media
The cafe is located on the first floor where the detective agency is and you work alongside a waitress and a kind owner. Members of the agency are often seen frequenting the place, thus you’ve become familiar with their faces, memorized their names, and even learned some things about themselves. Honestly, it’s all simple for you; you have a nice and peaceful job (ignoring the chaos around you and the occasional disturbance from Dazai), and you’re being paid well. What else could you ever wish for? It was all serene for you.
Not this time though.
It seems like luck has run out for you seeing that you’re bound on the ground right at this moment, becoming a hostage to a small criminal group. Everything that happened prior feels like a blur, you remember men suddenly entering the cafe with guns and threatening everyone, you remember them hurting the owner, and you remember being taken away. They want to use you as bait, a guarantee for the detective agency so that they will bite and get lured into the criminals’ trap, or whatever they were telling you earlier. You weren’t listening—maybe you were but their words just passed from one ear to another—, hands curled into a fist as it trembled, the cold floor felt like spikes stabbing into your skin, and as the rope dug into your skin.
Afraid? Perhaps you were. It’s not everyday you get a gun pointed at you and a man threatening your life. Is this how you’re going to die?
You try to distract and ease yourself by thinking of other things, your mind drifting to somewhere else instead of staying at where you are—the cat that you occasionally see across the street, the passing cars you’ll see outside the window, the music playing from the vinyl in the cafe, the ringing of the chime as the door opens, and the dark-haired man and eyes that reflect the earth. Dazai with his never-ending tab, with his continuous ridiculous offers, his dramatic expressions, his stupid whims, the way he would always annoy you as if it was a daily requirement, his messy bangs that frames his face, his words that poke and probe at your being, and his—
You are snapped out of your thoughts, a familiar voice calling your name, coming into the stream of your senses, and pulling you out of the daze that you are in.
“Dazai?” Something is drowning in the pools of his eyes, lurking in the depths, and the way he looks at you is different. The usual calm in his expression is disturbed by a mixture of emotions—like rain droplets on a surface of still water—, anger, worry, care merging into the gentle lines of his features. Your hands that were once bound were free, though your wrists are left with marks from the rope bindings and you could still feel the way it burns on your skin.
“What happened? Why are you here? Are you hurt? Did you come alone? How did you find me?” Many questions came pouring out of your mouth but your voice trembles as you speak, tone unstable as the words fall and shatter on the ground. Dazai only lets you, your form crumbling and he holds your pieces in his hand, and he assures you: “Everything is alright.”
He continues, taking off his coat to wrap it around your form, “Were you scared?” And you meekly nod, knowing that your voice will only betray you. Dazai doesn’t say anything and only pulls you close to him, embracing you in his arms (“I’m sorry I took so long.”). There was the scent of his perfume accompanied with a trace of gunpowder when you buried your face on his chest—you feel a sense of relief, comfort and warmth that makes its way through your thoughts and the feeling of suffocation slowly leaves you.
He draws small circles on your back as he tries to soothe you, “You’re safe now.” He whispers as he kisses the top of your head, his lips lingering for a few seconds as he inhales the smell of your hair. (You’ve never had him this close before, this soft, this warm. It feels like the man you have known him as before were all fabrications from your illusive mind and the one before you is a different person.)
He brings your hand towards his lips and he presses a kiss on your pulse, right where the marks of your wrists are, ever so gently, ever so sweetly, “Nobody will hurt you ever again.”
Tumblr media
You descend down the flight of stairs leading to a basement—a bar tucked away and hidden in plain sight. You’ve only known of it all thanks to a certain blabbermouth, he said it’s his favorite place to go. When you arrive, the interior shifts to a dimly-lit one with warm lights illuminating the whole place in contrast to the dark and foggy street outside. There’s the sound of jazz softly playing in the background, setting the tranquil ambience the whole bar carries.
And there he is, the man of the hour, basking underneath the golden glow. Sitting on the stool by the end of the counter, he has a glass of whiskey settled in front of him.
“I didn’t expect for you to actually come.” Dazai speaks, his voice molding into the gentleness of the song playing.
“I was curious. Though I didn’t know you'd be here at the same time.”
“Come sit.” He pats the spot beside him and you follow. You order something to drink as you sit and a glass is served in front of you after a few minutes. Silence crept up to the both of you as you didn’t say anything—and you wish you could read his mind at this moment, to know the thoughts that plagues his mind—and the stillness was an unbearable kind;
You begin, “Do you always come here?”
Dazai takes a sip from his glass before he answers, “Just often.”
“I see.” And before the silence could last even longer, you spoke once more: “You haven’t been coming to the cafe lately.”
“Why? Did you miss me? Are you finally going to take up my—“
“No.” He muttered a small “aw” at your firm rejection. “You still have an unpaid tab.” And he groans at that while you chuckle, finding amusement in the way his expression crumpled.
The sound of your laughter dies down after a few moments, trailing off to a gentle mutter of an: “Thank you.”
“For?” He asks, even if he already knows what you’re talking about.
“For back then.” For giving you his coat as he noticed you shivering, for assuring you that everything is okay and you’re not going to be harmed anymore, for blocking your sight of the men’s bodies that laid like lifeless corpses on the ground, for protecting you.
It has been weeks since it occurred but you could still feel the warmth of his body against yours and maybe his scent will linger no matter how much you try to wash it, and maybe you’ll have to forever carry the thought, the wishful thinking that maybe there’s something more. And maybe it’s the alcohol making him light-headed but three words are whispered to the air that settles in the space between you and him.
“I like you.”

Tumblr media
⁂ Shy at first. He wants to talk to you but he doesn't want to come off as obsessed or weird.
⁂ Initial talks are work related. One time, he was bold enough to ask you what your weekend plans were and when you asked him the same, he hesitated.
"Nothing really."
"No hot date or girl to tend to?" you smirked and it made his heart leap among other things.
"I'm afraid not."
⁂ You need help? He's there. Something wrong? He's listening to you vent. Someone pissed you off? Oh, he's going to talk to them. Not in front of you of course, but they'll come back with a sudden change in attitude. Working late? He's staying to make sure you get to your car/transportation safely. If you're not comfortable with that, for wtv reason, he'd either watch you from afar or ask you to call him so he knows you're safe.
⁂ Started keeping snacks for when you don't eat or forget to take your lunch. He works up the nerve to suggest you two grab something at a cafe and tries not to blush so hard when you happily agree.
⁂ Lots of stolen glances and silent admiring. His work has never been affected until he started to get to know you. It becomes even harder after you give him a little trinket, which he keeps safe on his desk.
You folded your sticky note into an origami shape, like the fortune tellers you used to make as a kid.
"What's that for?"
Your fingers worked at it, opening and closing, "Telling fortunes," open, close. It looked somewhat like a blossoming lotus "Go ahead, ask a question."
His lips faltered.
"Okay fine, keep it to yourself. Color?"
"Blue."
Your fingers shifted the shape, "Number?"
"2." he watched you play fortune teller then eyed you with amusement. When you glance up at him with raised brows, he tried not to look guilty for admiring your beauty seconds ago.
Your chuckle filled the elevator as he stared at you dumbfounded, "Pick another number."
"Oh, 5."
It was silly how his anticipation built by the second, but he wanted to know the answer... he had to.
He shifted his stance as you lifted the paper to (hopefully) ease his anxieties.
"Try again later ... tsk," you handed him the fortune teller "let me know what it says."
The doors to the elevator opened but neither of you moved. No matter how he tried to conceal his smile, the light in his eyes was evidence enough.
He quietly agreed, trying not to blush when his fingers brushed against yours as he took this silly little plaything in his hand.
Tumblr media
The question lingered in his mind like a stubborn fly insistent on getting a taste. He readjusted himself in the chair then went back to reading. A frustrated sigh left his lips when he read the same sentenced three times. He set down the book and walked to the closet. His fingers wrapped around the fortune teller you gave him days ago. He slid his thumbs and forefingers in like he watched you do.
Should I? he looked to the folded paper for answers.
Yellow ... 7 ... 2 ... yes.
Tumblr media
Epilogue:
The next day he approached you before going to his own desk. Although your smile touched his heart, he couldn't bring himself to say it ... not yet.
"I'm getting a pastry from the cafe. Did you want one?"
"Sure!"
His heart thumped in his ears as he walked off. When he finally made it back, he felt tense. His muscles tight, breathing rapid, heart racing. Then, he saw your eyes light up when he walked in.
"Thank you," you reached for the box and he handed it to you with a shy smile.
Normally, he'd say "you're welcome" or "my treat", "don't mention it", but he was looking at you with soft eyes.
"Are you okay?"
"That depends."
"On what?"
"... will you go out with me?"
His eyes landed on yours and he saw the joy in them before you said anything else.
"Is lunch too soon?"
He grinned at your eagerness. Ideally he'd suggest dinner, his place at 8 but he'd waited long enough. Yellow, 7, 2.
"Sounds perfect."

Get to know me better tag game
Thanks to @wuxia-vanlifer , @pastelcheckereddreams , and @tiny-breadcrumbs for the tag!
Last song I listened to: That depends: one that I chose, or one that I heard? Because I was in a cafe in Paris this afternoon that started playing “You Sexy Thing” on the soundsystem and almost did a spit-take with my latte. In terms of something I chose, I just put on Patrick Wolf’s “Teignmouth” (the Sundark and Riverlight version) before sitting down to answer these questions because I refused to have that song be my answer. :D
Currently Watching: Getting close(ish) to finishing some group watches of Luoyang and rewatched of Destined and The Untamed, and about to start a watchalong of Immortal Samsara with @eirenical, and on my own I started watching Legend of Shenli and In Blossom, which I put on hold because of travel (and wanting to spend my spare time writing).
Currently obsessed with: It’s still Mysterious Lotus Casebook, and that’s not changing any time soon. :D (it better not, at least! I’m almost 50k into writing what will probably be around a 100k fic for it, so I better keep with this hyperfixation for awhile, lol). I’m still regularly checking AO3 for my other favorite fandoms, but MLC hasn’t left a lot of brain space for other things.
Tagging @athenasdragon @zishuge @yletylyf @rose-tinted-vision @popotobun @xthelastknownsurvivorx (as always, no obligation to do it if you’re tagged, and feel free to consider yourself tagged if you see this! I tried not to tag people I tagged before in a different version of this back in February, so if you don’t see your name here, I’m not ignoring you! <3 )

works, so I wanted to do Sweet
Enchantments magic system next.

The magical world exists in spaces alongside the human realm. These spaces are much bigger on the inside, and traveling between them requires crossing through the human world. Emeril explains using an apron/pocket analogy, wherein the apron is the human world and its pockets are the magical world.
The magical world is full of magicians. Magical specialties sometimes run in the family; other times they're random. Magicians can be born to have a specific type of magic. These are charm, luck, memory, emotions, light, dark, transfiguration, glamour and plant. Each magic type has a corresponding sigil for it.
Tumblr media
Charm Magic
Charms make an object or person want to please the spell caster; for example, Runa's turnips are compelled to want to help her, and the desire makes them come to life in order to lend their help.
Luck Magic
Luck magic increases the luck of the user or whoever the spell is cast on. Lucien gives the heroine a minor demonstration in his first season by casting a luck-boosting enchantment on her and then challenging her to a game of cards: each of them draws one card, high card wins. When she pulls the higher card on their first draw, he adds the further rule that her points will double each time she pulls a card that's in sequence with her last draw. Despite the heroine shuffling the deck twice, every card she draws after that is exactly one higher than her last card.
Mood Magic
Mood magic can change the emotions of other people. Emeril describes it as seeing and changing colors.
Memory Magic
Memory magicians manipulate memories of others. They can amplify good memories, soften bad ones, and can also remove memories altogether.
Plant Magic
Plant magicians are able to manipulate plants and flora. They are also able to speed up and slow their growth as well as bring any plant back to life.
Sight | Glamour Magic
Sight magic and can create illusions of things that aren't really there. Magicians with glamour magic can make existing objects to look like something else. Because it only gives the appearance of looking like something else, when touched you can still feel the original object. The caster can see through the spell at will, and the more complex the glamour, the higher the chance it will fail.
Transfiguration Magic
Transfiguration magicains can transfigure almost anything, but whole duplicates never last very long. For example they can transform a rope into a real ladder, but not forever.
Light Magic
Light Magic is one of the most powerful and well respected magic in Sweet Enchantments. Light Magicians specializes in healing, barriers, and wards. Very powerful light magicains are able to mask their presence from other magical beings and radars.
Dark Magic
Dark magic revolves around curses, harmful enchantments placed upon others. It can also be used to counteract and mitigate curses cast by others, which is how Zain employs his talent for dark magic on behalf of the cafe's customers, but others with the same power are not so scrupulous. Within magician society, dark magicians are regarded with deep suspicion, with many assumptions and unfounded rumors about them. In Zain's second season, he tells the heroine that parents sometimes abandon children if they have dark magic due to the fear and prejudice surrounding them, contributing to a vicious cycle as those abandoned lash out against the society that rejected them.
Tumblr media
Magician Eyes
A magician's eyes have a unique pattern in the iris. Lucien has a pentagram, Runa has a lotus blossom, Zain has a four-pointed star, Roman has a multi-ringed pattern, Liora has three spirals, and Emeril has four swooping lines like the petals of a flower. Magicians aren't human, some just look more like it than others, as Runa puts it.
Magician Sigils
In Sweet Enchantments, verbal spells are a bit of a myth and nowadays incantations are only used in very complex spells with many different components. Instead, Sweet Enchantment magicains use sigils to cast spells which are drawn in the air with their finger. They can also use their sigil to make calls to other magicians. If someone gets a call, their sigil will light up in the air next to them, and they can accept or decline the call. Normally some identifying mark, such as the caller's face, will show on the receiver's sigil like caller ID.
The Sound of Magic
Each magician's magic is described as producing a particular sound, usually musical. Lucien's is a woodwind hum, Runa's is brassy and trumpeting, Liora's is harp strings, and Zain's is bass piano. Kamila's is a soprano choir and Merik's is a chitter like insect wings.
Tumblr media
Scrolls
Scrolls are magical items that allows anyone to use magic of any type, useful for those trying to use magic outside their specialty. They are said to be finiky and is needed to be read carefully before performing the magic. A single scroll can only be used once.
Potions
Are substances made from magical ingredients. A particular potion, Stardust, is made from a plant called Illucium Bundle and is very expensive.
Rings
There are rings that allow its wearer to enhance or limit the amount of magic they can use.
━━━━━━ ༺ ♡ ༻ ━━━━━━
Well that's it for extensive summary
of the magic of Sweet Enchantments.
Goodbye!

Best Things To Do In Vietnam: The Complete Guide
Tumblr media
Vietnam is a country of captivating contrasts, where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with modern life, and stunning natural landscapes rival the vibrancy of bustling cities. This comprehensive guide will take you through the best things to do in Vietnam, highlighting must-see destinations in Vietnam, cultural experiences, and activities that should be on every traveler's list. We'll also explore the best temples in Vietnam, providing a deeper understanding of the country’s spiritual heritage.
1. Exploring the Vibrant Cities

one. "double suicide"
kozume kenma x female dazai!reader
(bsd x hq)
tw: mentions of suicide
gen masterlist.       suicide freak!
Tumblr media
"this is getting a bit tiring, you know?" atsushi said with a sigh
"another drowning attempt?" he sighed
atsushi pulled her up by her armpits, her sand colored trench coat was drenched by water, making atsushi's clothes wet as well.
"i was finally so close" she said with a solemn look on her face
she then stood up straight and combed her fingers through her wet hair
she sent atsushi a spiteful glare and grumbled "but you just had to interfere"
atsushi scowled and crossed his arms. he popped his hip sassily and raised a brow at her claim.
"you were gonna die!" he exclaimed
"that's the point!" she answered back
atsushi huffed and dragged her along "whatever, just thank me for saving you with a free meal" he said
"broke ass" she muttered under her breath
"what was that?" atsushi grumbled
she smiled gleefully and wrapped her arm around the boy's shoulder "nothing, nothing! ~"
"cmon now, atsushi-kun~ i'll treat you til your tummy's full!" she cheered and slapped her hand on his back
he winced and peeled her arm off. "you're all wet! stop ruining my clothes!" he whined
she smirked cheekily and wiggled her eyes brows suggestively at him
"stop."
Tumblr media
"mhhm thwank wou y/n!" atsushi exclaimed
his cheeks were stuffed with food as he chowed down on the meal before him.
all while, y/n simply laughs and sips on her cup of coffee.
they were currently at a cafe, both drenched though y/n was way worse, and they've been staying there for almost an hour trying to dry off with the ac and fans.
"atsushi-kun, chomp down any faster and you'll choke~" she cooed
atsushi shook his head and took a big gulp. a very bad idea.
just as she's warned, atsushi ended up choking on his food. he was coughing and wheezing as he reached for the glass of water
she hurriedly went to pat the boy's back, trying to help him. though that was cut short once her eyes briefly landed on a boy.. or girl.
she paused mid-pat as she fully turned around to look at the boy seated at the farthest booth by the wall.
"y-y/n?!" atsushi wheezed and looked up at her with teary eyes
"pretty.." she mumbled, fully ignoring atsushi's calls for help as she made her way over to the boy
her eyes sparkled as the pudding head slouched on his seat, gripping his PSP as he played his game with utmost concentration.
"y/n?! where are you going?!" atsushi exclaimed as he finally eased down
the pudding head groaned and dropped his PSP in the table. he stomped his feet in aggravation as a frown etched itself on his face.
assuming he's lost the game, she awed internally as he started pouting and muttering to himself
grinning widely, she ran up to him, leaving a confused atsushi behind.
the pudding head flinched as a random girl suddenly pulled out his seat and kneeled before him
"um.. what the hell?" he muttered
"so beautiful!" she squeaked
she took his hand in hers and stared up at him with sparkling eyes and lovestruck expression.
"you are as ephemeral and elegant as a lotus blossom" she said in a flirtatious tone
"would you be willing.. to join me in a double suicide?"
"who the fuck are you?"
atsushi hurriedly pulled her away. a panicked look was on his face as he threw her to the side and bowed at the boy.
"im so sorry! im so sorry about that!" atsushi apologised
the pudding head scrunched up his face in both confusion and wariness.
as far as he's concerned, these people were total psychopaths.
his catlike eyes travel between the white-haired boy and the (h/c) haired girl. the boy was bowing in apology, while the girl was staring at him with a smile.
"um.. yeah, it's fine" he replied quietly, turning back around to play his games.
atsushi sighed in relief. his head then snapped towards y/n once again.
he pulled her away, bowing to the pudding head one last time as he did so.
"y/n-san! don't do that!" he scolded her "if kunikida-kun was here, he'd punch you!"
"but did you see that?!" she squealed and pranced around happily
"such an attractive, entrancing man.. never have i seen such beauty" she exclaimed dramatically
"having him join me in a double suicide.." she trailed off "it would be my ultimate goal!" she announced with determination
atsushi merely stared at her. his eye twitching every so often as he watched the girl dance around in glee
"y-you're not gonna follow him around or something.. are you?" atsushi asked warily
"you read my mind!" she grinned
"no! don't do that! are you crazy??" he whisper shouted
"why not?" she retorted "im a detective, aren't i? finding more about him would be easy piecy!"
"its a crime!" he exclaimed
"so is dying alone!"

Batarou Headcanon - Yakuza AU
Hello guys, it's me again bringing more Batarou headcanon! 👀✨
While I'm still trying to finish my writing on webcomic Batarou headcanon/ficlet/oneshot (??), also battling with my stressed out condition, I will offering this silly AU headcanon instead in the meantime. Warning: implication of nsfw-ish thing towards the end, but nothing explicit, also many inaccurate depiction of the topic matters I'm so sorry.
----------------------------
Badd is the firstborn of the strongest Yakuza clan, and also the Yakuza family's successor after both of his parents were assassinated by enemy clan.
The assassination happened when Badd was only a little kid while Zenko still a baby. Badd and Zenko survived from the tragedy after being saved by Bang, the leader and owner of martial art dojo, who worked as Badd's family bodyguard. They were both raised by Bang until Badd is reaching his adulthood, ready to take over his family's legacy.
Badd felt so sad after the death of his parents, sometimes mourning for them every night after Zenko was asleep. He swore to himself that he wont let the tragedy happening again, not when he still has the only precious person left from his family: Zenko. Once Badd reaching coming of age and finishing his school, he would be the Boss of his family clan.
Badd thought he wont get a friend because of his status and his intimidating look, until Bang bringing his adopted son into the dojo and introducing him to Badd. His name is Garou.
Garou, Bang's adopted son, was taught to be the next family bodyguard by Bang. So he can be the greatest martial artist to protect Badd for the rest of their life.
At first Garou was reluctant to take his future responsibility. But after seeing Badd, the most beautiful yet fierce person he ever witnessed, Garou gladly accept it. Especially after Badd bravely saving him from the bullies at school, showing how determinated he was to protect anyone he considered as his "family". Thus they started their relationship as childhood bestfriend, either in school or their home at Bang's dojo.
During that time, Garou encouraged himself to training as the best as he can in martial art. There's no way a bodyguard is weaker than the one they supposed to protect. He didn't want someone hurting Badd in the future, like what happened to his entire family. Badd is his bestfriend, his future boss, and also his first love.
Garou would be more than happy to be on Badd's side forever, protecting Badd from anyone who has ill intention towards him. It doesn't matter if Badd returned his feelings or not, because the most important thing is Badd's own happiness.
On the other hand, Badd was astonished by Garou's development and determination to become the greatest martial artist. It's like the "Fighting Spirit" is not only being inherited by his family's lineage, but also could be obtained by anyone who has strong determination. Someone who can be Badd's equal, not a subordinate no matter what people say. That's why Badd likes Garou, maybe more than just a friend along the way.
Badd also started to strengthen himself by learning how to self-defence, and to strike offensive attacks if it was needed. He didn't take martial art lesson like Garou did from Bang, instead Badd creating his own combat style using his family heirloom: a metal bat. Besides, it matched with Badd's current image as delinquent punk kid. In which could be frightening enough once he becomes full-fledged Yakuza Boss.
At school, because Garou and Badd didn't have the same class as Badd was one year younger than Garou, they would hangout on school breaktime and after school. Despite being a Yakuza's son and looking like tough kid, it doesn't mean that Badd is a bully. In fact, he was the one who becomes school protector along with Garou. There's bully gang trying to pick on poor classmates? These delinquent duo would showed up and make sure they wont get 2nd chance to do that again at all (everyone didn't know what exactly Garou and Badd have done but clearly they put the fear of god into those bullies effectively).
After school, they were either hangout on local diner/family restaurant/cafe/ice cream parlor/game arcade depends of their moods, so they could still living their live as normal teenagers for awhile. Or immediately went home at Bang's dojo to do training routines. Sometimes Badd and Garou training separately, sometimes they would sparring with eachother. Most favorite time was everytime they're trying on new techniques onto eachother in sparring session at training field, while Bang supervising them the whole time from dojo's main building entrance.
When Garou and Badd weren't in training hours, they spend time to do their own hobby as a form of relaxation. Garou likes to study in Bang's library or writing poems, whereas Badd have a fondness on cooking or baking to try out his mother's recipes, Zenko often joined him, too. Sometimes whenever Badd has difficulty on studying for exams, he always comes to Garou for help, so he ended up as Badd's tutor. In exchange, Garou asking Badd to cook for him since his cooking is delicious, thus Badd making special lunchbox for Garou as the payment.
Imagine after both of them graduated from highschool, Bang with the entire Badd's family alliance clans holding an inauguration ceremony for Badd. Badd was officially becomes the Yakuza boss and the leader of his family clan, taking his family legacy as the survivor. Then Garou pledged his loyalty for Badd as his bodyguard during the ceremony, vowed to be always be on Badd's side for the rest of his life and would never betrayed him at all cost.
Imagine Garou kneeled before Badd when he pledged his loyalty. And as soon as Garou finished his vow, he took Badd's hand and kissed his knuckle softly. Then looking at Badd with so much adoration yet there's hidden fire in those golden eyes, his trademark smug grin slowly showing on his handsome face. If Badd didn't fully realized he was in the middle of inauguration ceremony, he would thinks Garou was proposing him! Not a bad thought, actually. Maybe someday Garou would do that, if it was allowed. Nothing can stop Badd from hoping.
Imagine how badass these two when they're on-duty, and their compatible dynamic is legendary among the clans. Everyone who is Badd's family subordinate really admired and respected them wholeheartedly. Not only both are very strong equally, they're also charismatic in their own way.
Badd is a good and kindhearted leader despite looking rough on the outside, but never hesitated to show the frightening side if someone trying to mess with his beloved family. A feared leader for the enemies, but a loving leader for the family. Also very protective for Zenko and Garou. Has the alias as "Metal Bat" regarding his choice of weapon during the battle. His "Fighting Spirit" would be activated as the ultimate power only when it was in a very necessary time, but enough to put a fear onto his enemies. Not very good at delivering speech at meeting but always has the best motivational words. Secretly in love with his own bestfriend a.k.a. his bodyguard. Badd has 2 kind of tattoos: Dragon tattoo on his whole left arm and Phoenix tattoo on his back.
Garou is a total monster when in the middle of combat, especially when it comes to protect Badd, Zenko, and their entire family. Have excellent sense to detect any assassin who tried to target Badd and would eliminated them in a matter of second. Basically the Best Guardian ever. That's why their enemies would call him as "Human Monster" based on his strength and abilities to fight. But even a "monster" still has the pure and softest heart for Badd, and only Badd. Have a soft spot for any underdog and bullied kids. Garou was kinda spokeperson for Badd since he's better at delivering speech than Badd. Garou has 2 kind of tattoos: Oni/Demon tattoo on his left torso and Wolf tattoo on his back.
Zenko is the "Princess" among the family clans, but that doesn't mean she couldn't participate on being badass. She was very intelligent and the most sophisticated person among the three. Also learning battōjutsu martial art for self-defense, it's always fascinating seeing Zenko training using real sword so elegantly. Really adores her big brothers, yet never hesitated to slap some sense onto them when they're being such dumbasses. Very proud of what Badd has becomes. In the future after reaching adulthood, Zenko has 2 kind of tattoos: Cherry-blossom tattoos on her whole right arm and Samurai tattoo on her back.
Both of Garou and Badd also taking Tareo as a part of their family, after saving Tareo's family from being the enemy's hostage in a war between clans. Thus, Tareo becomes Zenko's BFF and possibly also a great trusted advisor for Badd's family in the future. Admired Garou very much. Garou inherited most of his knowledges and nerdy side to Tareo, hoping they would be useful someday. In the future after reaching adulthood, Tareo has 2 kind of tattoos: Koi tattoo on his whole right arm and Lotus tattoo on his left arm.
Imagine Garou and Badd had been mutual pining the whole time, but managed to keep it down so their family and subordinates wont noticed. Once Garou successfully confessed his romantic feeling for Badd (very awkward but sweet nonetheless), in which Badd accepted immediately, they're having a secret relationship behind the family's back. Because they didn't want to cause a ruckus between the clan family just because the Boss is currently doing lots of scandalous things together with his own bodyguard for every single day. Also the fact that Badd the Boss is the bottom most of the time, since he prefers to have Garou being an aggressive top (but there's no way Badd would never be submissive, as he always serve the good challenges for Garou to prove who's Boss).
Eventhough the family hadn't know yet about their "scandalous things", they could see how affectionate Badd towards Garou and vice versa. It's almost like those two men are lovers instead of only boss-bodyguard or bestfriends.
The way Garou being so protective for Badd, the way Badd patching up Garou's battle wounds, the way they're always looked so harmonious on fighting side-by-side in combat, the way they're gazing at eachother whenever they think noone noticed, the way Garou always kissing Badd's knuckles everytime they were going to clans war, also the way Badd kissing Garou's forehead as a blessing, the way they looked so happy when spending off-duty freetime together doing whatever they like at the moment, etc.
All of those proving that whatever relationship Garou and Badd have together is already beyond what the family members could imagine.
One time the family finally found out their nature of relationship was when Badd gotten hurt seriously after failed attempt of assassination, done by the order from another leader of clan who eventually becomes a traitor in the alliance. Garou was a second too late on completely protecting Badd because he didn't expect that there was a traitor among the family alliance. Knowing Badd was hurt sent Garou in berserk mode as he annihilated all the rest of traitor's assassins in the building, while Badd's family taking care of their unconscious Boss.
The whole betrayal angered the entire alliance members, especially Badd's core family. Garou's wrath was totally understandable because he was the closest person for Badd, seeing the devastation he caused upon the traitor clan. Zenko was in rage once she knows who was betrayed her big brother, she almost going to execute that person by herself with her own sword. Bang, who had seen this kind of assassination happened twice on Badd's family, and already considered Badd as his own son, in a silent fury immediately arranging what punishments the traitor clan would get.
The traitor clan was punished severely, and its leader was executed on the following day. Badd still resting in his home, in which guarded securely by his subordinates. Zenko was helping the caretakers to heal Badd's wounds, worrying for her big brother's condition. Garou never leaving his bedside, his hands holding Badd's hands as he quietly apologizes profusely for letting Badd hurted, for nearly losing Badd because of his own carelessness. Garou was ready if Badd wants to punish him, anything will do to get his forgiveness.
Regaining consciousness a little bit after hearing Garou's long rambling, Badd weakly ordering him to shut up and stop apologizing, because there's nothing wrong with Garou. In fact, Badd was actually grateful for Garou's good reflex to prevent the assassination from being 100% successful. That's why Badd still survive and alive, soon to be back being the Big Boss again. He smiled tenderly to reassure Garou, the hands that Garou was currently holding caressing him back.
If Garou still a small weakling kid like back then, he would be sobbing pitifully seeing his only bestfriend almost died. But now as a full-grown adult and the strongest martial artist, he just silently crying out of relief having his secret lover smiling brightly for him.
Just like a Phoenix, Badd wont die too easily, always regenerating fast and reviving again so he can comes back stronger than before. As Badd said, "Death is just a flesh wound, you can totally revive through fighting spirit and have another go!".
Wiping Garou's tears away with his hands, Badd whispering a "Thank you" for him. He cupped the bodyguard's cheeks before trying to get on sitting position, which Garou quickly supporting Badd's back by pulling him closer with his arms so he could sit properly on the bed. Now that they're facing eachother, Badd slowly reduce the distance between them until he could kiss Garou softly on the lips.
Garou was so happy to have Badd in his arms again, without any hesitation he reciprocated the kiss so it would go deeper, one hand still supporting Badd's back while the other caressing his nape, pulling the Boss even more closer than before. As the kiss becomes intimate, Badd humming in joy while his arms encircled Garou's neck, never letting him go.
They both were deep in passionate moment to notice that some of their family members saw the entire thing from the window, or from the door when the others wanted to relay the meeting report to Garou so he could tell it to their Boss. But since they were already in their own world and looked so happy, they just backed off silently and keeping the secret for the sake of the Boss. Or trying to cleanse their minds because it was "too much information to see".
Despite their status, with Badd as the infamous Yakuza Boss and Garou as his monster bodyguard, the family wont mind about their love life. As long as Garou keeps their Boss happy, why not? They both deserved everything best in their life..

---- THE END ----
--------------------------
Notes:
I'm so sorry for spawning another dumb AU headcanon again! And for working on completely impromptu writings instead continuing current WIP aaaah I can't focused enough my mind was going everywhere-- 😫😅🙏💦
Originally I was currently working for webcomic headcanon feat. short haired Fedex man (or mover?) Garou and tired Neo Heroes Badd, but something happened irl made me stressed out for whole 2 days nonstop. My mind was like a bottomless pit full of darker thoughts, I tried to think something anything so I wont be too focused on those thoughts. Hufff..
Then suddenly, this headcanon was born! Idk why I got this idea but I saw a Batarou fanart when scrolling through my phone gallery, it has nothing to do with Yakuza things but it sparked the whole idea! It was just Garou and Badd wearing matching Boyfriend Jackets™ with delinquent-esque tattoos motifs on the fabrics, with Badd resting on Garou's thigh while they're holding hands, both blushing brightly. I wish I could show you all but I forgot the source, since it was older fanworks from a Batarou Japanese artist on twitter 😢
I even trying to search what's popular tattoos motifs for yakuza members, and which one that matched their position/personality/depiction. It was kinda fun, imho.
Did you notice that tattoos placement for Badd and Zenko are mirrorring eachother? And that the tattoos motifs on their arms = their images (Dragon and Cherry-blossom, respectively), on their back = their way of life (Phoenix and Samurai, respectively)? Or Garou's tattoos, Demon on the front = his mask/job, while Wolf on the back = his true nature as both predator and protector? While Tareo's tattoos, Koi on the right arm = his soft and loving nature, Lotus on the left arm = his life journey to reach his full potential?
Also because I like the image of Zenko handling a sword like a badass, I was researching which sword martial art that suits her, both to self-defense and also to combat in emergency times. After looking through the types of sword martial art, I choose battōjutsu since it looks awesome yet still so elegant! Kinda punny when Badd choosing to use bat (literal bat) for fighting, whereas Zenko using battō (swordmanship) for fighting. Both words has similar pronounciation in Japanese, lmao! 😆
I hoped you enjoyed this AU, despite I know this wasn't impressionable enough as usual I'm so sorry. This idea was only done for 1 hour, another 1 hour to edit so it would coherent enough, so the quality was not quite good enough.. 😔 And after re-reading for several times, I just realized that I reused many elements/dynamic from my WereVamp AU welp, there goes me not being a creative person, already proven several times hhhh 😓

Welcome to the City of Blossom
Tumblr media
A glittering metropolis of magic and life, built at the center of a titan lotus.
Here beings of ethereal stature live amongst each other in harmony. It’s a peaceful place, known for relaxing cafes, cozy libraries, and historical buildings. It’s a bustling utopia of comfort and euphoria, and hardly anything ever goes wrong. Nothing is wrong in Blossom City, no nefarious political secrets or dark magic bubbling beneath the entire populace without their knowing. Nothing is wrong whatsoever, all you need to worry about is weather or not the barista remembered to put enough mana in your coffee.

Best Places for...
A masterlist of the best places for pictures, show viewings, and food!
Magic Kingdom:
Pictures with Cinderella Castle- on the ramp in front of the castle
Viewing Festival of Fantasy- the road that runs from Liberty Square to the front of Adventureland (think in front of Country Bear Jamboree). It’s normally a lot less crowded than Main Street!
Viewing Happily Ever After- if you’re too close, you won’t be able to see the fireworks well. If you’re too far away, you won’t be able to see the projections. I recommend camping out behind Walt and Mickey’s statue, at the edge of the road, about an hour before it starts.
Viewing Mickey’s Friendship Faire- if you’re with kids, try to get as close as possible because they can interact with the characters.  However, if you’re viewing the show for the aesthetic value, stand further back so that you can see everything on stage.
Quick Service Food- I recommend Pecos Bill in Adventureland (Mexican food that will fill you up without draining your bank account), Columbia Harbour House in Liberty Square (Colonial American cuisine with familiar favorites), Sleepy Hollow in Liberty Square (great food, but limited options), and Pinocchio Village Haus in Fantasyland (Italian, pasta, pizza, salad, etc)
Sit Down Dining- If you can get a dinner reservation for Be Our Guest, do it!! I was never able to get in, but everyone I’ve talked to has said it’s incredible.  If you’re a fan of Pirates, Tortuga Tavern is the way to go.  If you dine at The Crystal Palace, you can be visited by the inhabitants of the Hundred Acre Wood.
Epcot:
Pictures with Spaceship Earth- right beyond security, to the left of the Monorail. It’s where the Leave A Legacy section used to be, if you visited Epcot before they moved it! (Creds to my friend Amie for passing on this info on to me before I left for Disney!)
Pictures around the World Showcase- I have no special tips for getting pictures in front of icons of the countries. The only one I’ve had problems with is the fountain in Italy. Normally, if you glare hard enough at the people sitting there, they’ll move eventually. You didn’t hear that from me.
Viewing Epcot Forever- Full disclosure, I never had the chance to see the full show. But, for what I know and what little I have seen, I can tell you that the best place to view the show is the Showcase Plaza, between Port of Entry and Traders.
Quick Service Food- The wonderful thing about Epcot is the enormous amount of variety you have before you. BUT, if you still want recommendations, I’ve got ‘em for you. Lotus Blossom Cafe in China, Sommerfest in Germany (next to Biergarten), Regal Eagle Smokehouse (not my personal favorite, but highly praised), and Crepes des Chefs de France in... you’ve guessed it- France.
Sit Down Dining- La Hacienda de San Angel in Mexico, you can participate in Princess Storybook Dining at Akershus Royal Banquet Hall in Norway, Nine Dragons Restaurant in China, Biergarten in Germany (the waiters are cute, trust me), Via Napoli Ristorante e Pizzeria in Italy, Spice Road Table in Morocco, Chefs de France in France, and Rose and Crown Pub in the UK.
Animal Kingdom:
This is my park, so I might be a little biased.
Pictures with the Tree of Life- If you want the full tree in the background, walk down to where they hold the Winged Encounters experience. People can’t get beyond the fence, so pose there! If you want a closer up photo that doesn’t have the whole tree, walk down one of the animal viewing trails or check out the Tree of Life Garden.
Viewing the Tree of Life Awakenings- As is with Happily Ever After, if you’re too close to the tree, you won’t be able to see the full projections. My favorite place to stand is between Island Mercantile and Discovery Trading Company, but again, that’s where I worked so I’m biased.
Quick Service Food- Flame Tree Barbecue! Might I suggest Flame Tree Barbecue? Harambe Market in Africa, Satu’li Canteen in Pandora, and Eight Spoon Cafe.
Sit Down Dining- Tiffins, Yak & Yeti Restaurant in Asia, and Tusker House in Africa.
I really, really wish I could give you guys tips for Hollywood Studios, but unfortunately, cast members were blocked out of Studios for the period of time that I was there. I can tell you that Backlot Express is fantastic for quick service food.

Coffee, Quirks, and Tigers
Summary: Ootsuki runs a kirei shop in a popular shopping district, but he mostly keeps to himself.  And then Fukuda shows up with his boss, who tells him to stay and pick out something for someone's birthday present.  He stays, it's awkward, but apparently not that awkward because Fukuda comes back again.  And again.  And pretty soon it becomes a weekly Thing for the two of them to go get coffee together. Now if only Suzuki and his henchmen could leave the two of them alone.
A/N: Starring Ootsuki and Fukuda from Mob Psycho 100!!  (Two of the guys who helped Shou in the finale of Season 2.)  They had basically five seconds of screen time...so I got to make up 99% of their personalities!  BWAHAHAHA THE POWAAAAAH!
Ootsuki squinted. He'd been drawing a sketch of two fish swimming through trailing willow leaves.  It was a commission for a prestigious high school, but he couldn’t get it right yet.
He sat back and stretched, glancing at his shop.  His drawing desk was in the back.  Framed kirei hung on the left and right walls, showing lacy outlines of flowers, people, even whole cherry trees.  Delicate three-dimensional paper animals hung from the ceiling, and three patterned kimonos were displayed in the window.
Outside, the Tatooin Shopping District was swarming with tourists. Street loudspeakers played a constant pop culture soundtrack barely audible over the roar of people.  People came here for the chic cafes, high-end clothing stores, and a few electronic places - he got free cable from the flatscreen TVs displayed across the street.  It was usually news stories about heroes, although lately there had been a few missing person cases mixed in.  Specialty stores like Ootsuki’s kirei shop didn’t get a lot of customers.  That was fine with him.  Most of his business came from commissions, anyway.  He sighed and turned back to his drawing.
Ding!
The front door opened and a giant strode into his shop, accompanied by a rush of street noise.  He had spiky orange hair, electric blue eyes and a blazer swung over his shoulders like a cape.
“Now this is more like it!” he proclaimed.
“Shou, be careful!”
A second man appeared behind the first, following close enough to be his shadow. He was built like a bear, with short black hair and anxiety written all over his face. “Did you bump your shoulder in the doorway? You did, didn't you? Are you alright?”
Shou’s eyes caught Ootsuki and he jumped.  “Oi!  This your shop?”
“H-hai! Irasshaimase.” He started to bow, realized he was sitting, and scrambled to his feet, but the giant had already turned away.
“Pretty impressive,” he said, inspecting a paper sparrow hanging from the ceiling.  “Even got the texture of the feathers in there.  Nice.”
“Shou, please!” the other man insisted. “Be careful, you could get a paper cut -”
“Fukuda!”
This time both men jumped.  “H-hai!” Fukuda stammered.
Shou jabbed a thumb at a framed kirei piece.  “Find me something like this for Mom's birthday.  I don't want you back at HQ until you've given it at least two hours of thought – after all, it's the thought that counts!”
“But –”
“Two hours! Countin' on ya!”
Shou waved and slipped out the door faster than Ootsuki could follow, vanishing instantly into the crowd. He glanced over. Fukuda was doing such a perfect impression of a sad puppy that Ootsuki snorted with laughter.
“Oh – er, sorry,” he said, catching himself.
Fukuda sighed. “No, no. I apologize for the disturbance.  I tend to get a bit...overprotective...and Shou is my boss.  I’m Fukuda Itsuki, I’ll be in your care.”
“Ootsuki Souta,” he said, and repeated the greeting.  After that he wasn’t sure what to do.   He ran a hand self-consciously over his bangs, glad they were long enough to cover his eyes.  “Er, well...would you like help picking something out, or…?”
“Yes please,” Fukuda said.  He nodded at the bird Shou had inspected.  “I've never been in a shop like this before. What kind of art is this?”
“It's kirei.  Most of what I sell involves cut paper. That includes the sculptures, but most of it is two-dimensional.” He stopped there - most people’s eyes glazed over at that point - but Fukuda was looking at him as if genuinely interested.  Ootsuki gestured to the framed pieces leaning in neat rows along the walls.  “Those are all made with a single sheet of paper each, and a very sharp knife. I make faces, landscapes, animals – there's one I did of paper fans, just for the irony. They're all organized by size and category...”
He led Fukuda on a brief tour of the shop, discussing his favorite pieces and the techniques he’d used to make them.  Fukuda was much calmer now that he wasn’t fussing over Shou, and asked questions about the types of paper he used and the tools he worked with.  Ootsuki grinned and pushed his bangs back from his eyes.  He never got to talk about this in such detail, but Fukuda made it easy.  Fukuda made it fun.
They made a full circuit around the shop, ending at the window display.  The kimonos were beautiful even from the back.  Each of them had been printed in a tiny repeating pattern: a lotus blossom, a seashell, or the kanji for “jewel.”
Fukuda looked at them with obvious admiration.  “They’re gorgeous.  Although I'm a little surprised to see clothing in a kirei shop.”
“It’s the patterns.  I stamped it onto the fabric by hand.”
Fukuda's eyes actually boggled. “That's hand-stamped? I thought that was machinery!”
Ootsuki grinned.  “Nope, it’s all me.  This one was especially tricky.”  He reached for the one with seashells.
“Ah – your hands!”
Ootsuki glanced down. The light from outside caught the sheen of all the tiny, nearly invisible scars covering his fingers and palms. “Oh, that. Well, to get the best cut in a piece of paper, you have to drag the blade toward you. Better control that way. But the knives I use have to be quite sharp, and it took practice learning how to do it.”
“And your palms?”
“Pardon?”
“Knives wouldn’t cut your palms like that, look.”  He took Ootsuki’s left hand and gently turned it over.  The scars were thicker, darker.
Ootsuki flinched and pulled away.  “I don’t like people touching my hands.”
“Sorry, I’m sorry.  It's just, my quirk is healing, but I can't heal scars...it bothers me when I see wounds that haven't been properly tended.”
“They were tended just fine,” Ootsuki said, a little too sharply. “I just wasn't good at controlling my quirk when I was little. So!” He turned away. “I think that wraps up the tour.”
“Of course. I'm sorry to have taken so much of your time.”
He sounded so sincere about it that Ootsuki softened.  “No, it's just that your two hours are almost up,” he said, and realized it was true.  How did it go by so fast?
“Then, if it’s alright...could I have that one?” Fukuda asked.  He pointed to a piece hanging on the wall, a particularly intricate kirei with cuts so fine you could almost see the texture of the fur.
“You like it?”
Fukuda smiled.  “Suzuki-san did always have a fondness for cats.”
Ootsuki sat at his desk again, doodling.
He was done with the fish commission, and now he had nothing to do while he waited to hear back.  It didn’t help that his thoughts kept wandering to Fukuda.  The visit had been two days ago.  Ootsuki was sorry he’d been rude at the end, and it felt worse every time he thought about it.  Why did he have to be so - so emo and awkward?  He tugged anxiously at his bangs.  He could be clever.  If Fukuda ever did come back, he’d -
Ding!
“Fukuda!”
“It's good to see you, too,” Fukuda said, grinning, and he realized he'd jumped to his feet.
Ootsuki flushed.  “Well, um, yes,” he said.  With zero cleverness at all.
Fukuda didn’t seem to notice.  “I’m sorry to bother you again, but Shou's mother wanted to commission a piece of her cat.  Is that alright?  I brought a photo.”
Familiar territory!  “Of course, I do commission pieces all the time.  Can I see it?”
“Right, here…”  Fukuda started digging through the bag slung over his shoulder.  “Sorry, sorry, I keep everything in here.  I don’t even know how old that granola bar is...ah, here we go!”
He held out a photo of a small white cat.  Ootsuki moved to take it, and when he did, two coupons for the Golden Bean fanned out from behind it.
“Oh, isn’t this that shop down the street?” Ootsuki asked, glancing up.
He stopped cold.  Fukuda’s warm brown skin was suddenly ash-gray, and he was staring at the tickets like they were vipers poised to strike.
“I don’t...remember these,” he whispered.
“It’s okay!” Ootsuki said quickly.  He wasn’t sure why the coupons had unsettled Fukuda so deeply, but the look on his face was unbearable.  He yanked them out of Fukuda’s grip.
“Wait, wait -”
“They’re just coupons!” Ootsuki said, holding the coupons well out of sight.  “Look!  I’ll just throw them away - oh.”
“‘Oh’?” Fukuda said, his face practically slate gray.  “O-Ootsuki, quickly, those tickets might be from -”
“From ‘Shou’?” Ootsuki asked drily, holding them up.  The silvery foil on the back of the coupons was covered in thick red scrawl.
Yo, Ootsuki!  Thanks for looking after Fukuda.  Take him for a walk, wouldja?  Have a cup of coffee, my treat!  - Shou
Immediately Fukuda’s shoulders slumped and color flooded into his face.  “Oh thank goodness.  It’s just Shou.”
Yes, pegging you like the lost puppy you are, Ootsuki thought.  Aloud he said, “I guess you’d like to have these back then?”
“They seem to be addressed to you,” Fukuda said.  “Would you want to go?  I feel really silly for reacting like that, and I’d like to make it up to you.  Do you like the Golden Bean?”
Ootsuki shrugged.  “I’ve never been there.”
“You’ve nev - you work five minutes away!”
“The streets are crowded,” Ootsuki protested, but it sounded lame even to his own ears.
Fukuda’s lips twitched like he was hiding a smile.  “I’m big enough to make a path for us.  Please?”
It was that unbearable puppy dog look that did him in.  Ootsuki found himself locking up the shop and heading out into the street behind Fukuda.  At least he was right - his bulk really did carve an easier path.
The Golden Bean, however, was even worse.  It was easily three times as crowded.  People kept bumping Ootsuki and hitting his hands and he was about five seconds from bolting, self-conscious anxiety or not.
Fukuda, oblivious, looped an arm through Ootsuki’s and somehow stepped right up to the counter.
“What do you want to order?” Fukuda yelled cheerfully over the noise.
Ootsuki looked at the menu, which was the size of a billboard and crammed with 12-pt font.
“Are you kidding?” he gasped out.
Fukuda grinned, turned to the cashier, and shouted something else.  Somehow Fukuda managed to place an order, grab their cups, and find the last table left, in a little corner of the shop where the noise was down to a dull roar.
“I am convinced this is your Quirk,” Ootsuki said, practically collapsing into his chair.
“What, ordering coffee?”
“Finding tables in this madhouse!”
“It comes from having to keep a sharp eye out.”  Before Ootsuki could ask what that meant, Fukuda passed him his coffee.  “Here, drink.  You’re looking a little pale.”
“I’m not used to dealing with people,” he said faintly.
“But you work in one of the busiest streets of the city.”
“Most of the people stay outside my shop.  Being near people is one thing, interacting is another.  I get nervous when people are really close to me.”
“Oh.”  Something in Fukuda’s tone made Ootsuki look up.  He was staring at Ootsuki’s hands again, and there was something behind his eyes that made Ootsuki remember how big he was.  “Ootsuki, is someone...hurting you?”
“What?  No!”
“Because if they are, I’d really like to do something about it.”
“They’re not, no one is, I promise,” Ootsuki said, barely managing to keep his hands above the table.  “Look, the scars are my fault.  I couldn’t control my quirk when I was younger.  I can channel kinetic energy through thin, flexible objects.  Plastic works, but paper is best, and school was full of paper.  Every time I picked up a piece of homework or a quiz…”  He gestured, indicating an explosion.  “It made school interesting, I'll say that much.”
Fukuda stared at him. “But you work with paper.”
“I learned to control it.”
“You saw a quirk counselor?”
“Er...no…”  He shifted in his seat.  “When I was little, we had a neighbor three apartments over who liked origami. He’d make tigers or cranes and blow into them.  They’d come to life, just for a day or two, and he’d leave them out for other kids in the complex to play with.”
Fukuda’s face lit up. “That's amazing! So he taught you origami, too?”
Ootsuki fidgeted anxiously with a napkin. “No.  I thought it would be fun to blow his tigers up. I'm not like that anymore!” he added quickly.  Fukuda’s shock made his guts twist.  “I thought choosing not to control my quirk was easier than admitting I couldn’t.  I pretended it was funny.  So one day I blew his tigers up, and then I turned around and - and saw him standing there.  I saw his face.  And after that it wasn’t funny anymore.”
“Ootsuki...”
He ducked his head. “I avoided him for months. Then I got it into my head that if I could put the tigers back, everything would be alright. So I got a book on origami and a bunch of paper and practiced.  Even with homework.  Before I’d moved it around with erasers, but now I actively tried to manage it all the time, because if I didn’t, I couldn’t make the tigers.  When I was done, my hands looked like this and I had a dozen or so crappy tigers lined up in the courtyard.”
“And? What did he say?”
“Nothing,” Ootsuki said quietly. “He wasn't there anymore. He moved away. I was a coward for so long that I never got the chance to apologize.”
“And I think a kind person like that would have been happy with the gift you made for him.”
“It wasn't a gift. They weren't even all that good.”
“I beg to differ.”
Fukuda caught Ootsuki's wrist and he looked down, startled. He'd been folding a napkin into a paper tiger without realizing it, and he'd been about to rip it in half.
“It's quite good,” Fukuda said. “And one more thing.  I don’t think you’re a coward, Ootsuki.”
“I literally hide behind my bangs,” he said flatly.
“You came to coffee with me,” Fukuda countered.
“That was just because -”  He stopped short, flushing.  He wasn’t about to mention that obnoxious puppy dog face.  Mostly because Fukuda was doing it right now.
“You’re braver than you think you are,” Fukuda said.  “And I’m taking this to keep as proof.”
He plucked the tiger from Ootsuki’s hand and tucked it safely into his bag.
Fukuda came back two days later, and again two days after that. He said it was because Shou's mother had more orders, but Ootsuki secretly suspected that Shou himself was responsible. He was probably the littlest bit annoyed with being watched like a hawk for stubbed toes and sent Fukuda off for two straight hours of peace.
Ootsuki didn't mind.
Fukuda, meanwhile, seem to have extended his overprotectiveness to Ootsuki, and was frequently checking to make sure he didn't have any fresh paper cuts, got eight hours of sleep a night, and took breaks from drawing so he wouldn't strain his eyes.
Ootsuki didn't mind that, either.
The two of them took to buying coffee and walking around to look at all the shops.  Once in a while Fukuda saw a window display for a fluffy sweater and just had to have it, and Ootsuki bought a new halogen lamp for his desk.  Fukuda finally got Ootsuki hooked on pistachio-flavored coffee, which Ootsuki hadn’t even known existed (and wasn’t convinced that it should).
Two weeks into their coffee tradition, Ootsuki was hanging a new sparrow sculpture when he heard the door open behind him.
“You’re early,” he said, turning.  Then he stopped short.  “What happened?”
Fukuda was standing in the doorway, face pale, hands shaking at his sides, clothes rumpled like he hadn’t slept for days.  He was looking around the shop like he didn’t even see it.
Ootsuki jumped off the stepstool and hurried over.  “Are you alright?  Are you injured anywhere?”
“Huh?  No, I...no…”
“You look like hell!”
Fukuda laughed weakly, but it wasn’t a joke, and they both knew it.  “Sorry.  I’m, uh, I had a rough day.  Should we get going?”
“Now?  Like this?”
“I really will be fine after some tea.  Or something.”
Ootsuki hesitated, thinking.  “Alright,” he said slowly.  “But it’s getting kind of cool out.  Come on back, I need to grab my jacket.”
“Sure.”
Ootsuki headed for the back of the shop - without letting go of Fukuda’s hand.  He trailed along after him like an oversized puppy.  Ootsuki reached the employee’s door and pushed it open.  He even got a few feet inside before Fukuda drew up short.
“I-I’m sorry for intruding,” he stammered.  “I didn’t know you lived back here.”
Ootsuki had converted the back room into a one-room apartment.  There was a western-style bed on the right, a table in the center, and a kitchenette on the left, with the bathroom door in the back left corner.  Most of his expendable income had gone into a TV and game system set up next to the bed.  The place was spare but functional.
He shrugged.  “My budget’s pretty modest, and anyway I don’t see the point in buying a second place just for a bed and a bad commute.”
Fukuda’s lips twitched.  “You do have a point.”
“Sit down anywhere, I’ll just be a second.”
Ootsuki went to the kitchenette and Fukuda sat down at the table.  A few copies of Ootsuki’s best works hung on the walls, and Fukuda was looking at the cityscape one with interest.  Then he blinked and seemed to come back to himself again.  “What are you doing?”
“What does it look like?” Ootsuki turned around, a mug in each hand.  “Making tea.”
“You didn’t have to,” Fukuda said weakly.
“It’s just instant tea, nothing fancy.”
“We were gonna get coffee.”
“Next time.”  He set the mug down.  “Sit.  Drink.  Breathe.”
Fukuda obeyed while Ootsuki grabbed the quilt from his bed.  He sat down next to Fukuda so their legs were touching and wrapped the blanket around their shoulders.
“Let me know if this bothers you, but sometimes pressure helps me calm down.”
“I’m the same,” Fukuda murmured.  “When it’s someone like you.”
Ootsuki’s face felt as hot as the tea.  “Okay.  Um.  Anime.  I mean - let’s put on an anime or something.  Or not.  Or we can talk if you want.  Or not.”  Stop talking, stop talking, stop talking.
“Anything is fine.” Fukuda lowered his mug to the table, eyes down.  “You really didn’t have to do this.”
Ootsuki rolled his eyes.  “Pretty sure I did.  You worry a lot about other people, Fukuda, but not enough about yourself.”
Fukuda gave a tiny smile.  “You know, in your own way, you're nearly as stubborn as Shou.”
“Your boss?”
“And longtime friend. We met doing underground hero work.”
“Ah,” Ootsuki said.  Then the words sank into his brain. “Wait, what? Underground heroes? How is he an underground hero with that bright red hai – I'm sorry did you say you're a hero?!”
“Yes?” Fukuda glanced up, eyes twinkling. “Is it that much of a surprise?”
“I mean – you're so – lost puppy –”
“I'm a what now?”
“Mild-mannered! Is what I meant to say!”
“Yes, I'm a hero,” Fukuda said, grinning.  He had absolutely heard the puppy comment. “My healing quirk isn't particularly useful for offense, but it's invaluable as backup for the others in our agency.”
“I can imagine,” Ootsuki managed. Fukuda didn't fit Ootsuki's image of a hero at all. Fukuda wore fluffy sweaters and an open expression and exuded the kind of warm calm people normally associated with a good cup of hot chocolate.  Being a “hero” seemed to involve more exaggerated muscle development, primary colors and...teeth?
Fukuda chuckled as if he could read Ootsuki’s thoughts. “That's exactly why I'm so useful as an underground hero. I know how to dress and act a certain way.  How to give off a certain impression or persona. If you drop me in the middle of a city anywhere in Japan, I could disappear in an hour and never be found. I mostly work on organizational crimes, but sometimes I get asked to pursue missing person's cases.”
“Missing...but don't kidnapped people usually end up –”
“Yes,” Fukuda said.  His voice was low and his shoulders were trembling.  Ootsuki wrapped him in a hug.
“It must be hard,” Ootsuki said quietly.
Fukuda leaned into him, eyes cast down.  “I can - I can usually find them in time.  And heal them.  I’m very, very good at both.  But Shou - there’s a man we’ve been tracking - you’ve seen the rash of missing people in the news?”
“I think so,” Ootsuki said slowly.  It sounded vaguely familiar.
“The man we’re tracking is responsible, and today we found one of his facilities.  They’d known we were coming and abandoned the place.  But we found evidence of some of the missing people, and the - the Quirk research they were doing -”
His voice broke.  Ootsuki rubbed his back in small, slow circles.  “I can’t even imagine what it’s that’s like,” Ootsuki said softly.  He wished he had something better to say.  “I guess this explains why you were so scared when we found Shou’s coupons in your bag.”
Fukuda rubbed at his eyes with one hand.  “I’ve been wondering lately if I’m being tracked.  One of the man’s top followers is very good at electronic spying.  We’re closer to finding them every day, and I think they’re finally feeling the pressure.  We’re going to have to face them soon.”
“Shou doesn’t seem like the type of person to lose,” Ootsuki said.
“He’s not.  He really doesn’t need my help most of the time.  But with the man we’re tracking, he will.  Soon.  Even then we might not be enough to beat him.  I have to make sure he’s at the top of his game.  If I don’t, if he’s even a little bit tired, a little bit slow, if I’m not enough, then he might – he might actually –”
Fukuda folded into himself.  Ootsuki pulled him gently so that Fukuda was leaning into him, head just below Ootsuki’s chin.  He knew there was nothing he could say, nothing he could do.  For the first time he wished he knew how to use his quirk for something...more.  His heart ached.
When Fukuda was calmer, they drank their tea and quietly watched anime movies on Ootsuki’s cell phone.  Ootsuki pulled the blanket off his bed and wrapped them up in it, shoulder to shoulder.  They stayed like that, pressed together in quiet, comforting warmth, for a long time.
It was two minutes past coffee time.
Ootsuki sat at his desk, trying not to fidget.  He glanced out the window.  Back to his desk.  Back to the window.  Then he got up and looked down the street, shoving his face between the kimonos, trying to peer through the crowd.  Five minutes past coffee time.  Still no Fukuda.  He pulled his phone out of his pocket.
Fukuda picked up on the second ring.  “Yes?”
“You’re late.”
“I’m five minutes late,” Fukuda said, and Ootsuki could hear the smile in his voice.  “I’m rubbing off on you.  You didn’t worry so much last week.”
“Last week I didn’t know that you regularly risk your life for a living,” Ootsuki retorted.
Fukuda laughed.  They’d texted a few times since the last time he came over, but it wasn’t the same.  Ootsuki was glad to hear him back to his usual self.
“You’re almost here?” he asked.
“Yes, yes, I’m almost there.  You can probably see me from your window.  Look.”
Ootsuki looked.  An arm in a fluffy green sweater sprouted from the crowd three stores down, waving.
“You look like a bean sprout,” Ootsuki told him, just to hear him laugh again.  “Alright, alright, I’m hanging up.  But you owe me coffee for making me worry.”
“It’s a deal.”
Ootsuki pocketed the phone and realized he was smiling.  A new coffee shop had opened next to the Golden Bean.  There was a semi-playful war between the two on which was better.  Even the music on the street speakers was interrupted with updates on which shop had gotten more likes on Facebrick.  Ootsuki and Fukuda both thought it was hilarious.
And Ootsuki wanted to try the new shop.  More specifically, he wanted to try it with Fukuda.
His friend’s face finally came into view, swimming toward him in the crowd.  Ootsuki’s grin widened and he turned for the door.
Suddenly the street speakers screeched.  The sound was so loud Ootsuki felt it in his teeth.  He jerked badly and people outside shouted in pain and surprise.
Then the security gates on every shop came slamming down.
“HEY!”
Ootsuki flung himself at his door.  The bars were on the outside, but Ootsuki couldn’t even get to them; the door had locked and wouldn’t open.  He heard screams and saw that some people had been crushed under the gates and were struggling to get free.  The electronic store across the street had a safety gate that swung down like a garage door, and it had someone pinned by her shoulder.  Fukuda was already cutting through the fleeing crowd, hand outstretched and glowing.  Ootsuki took a shuddering breath.  That’s right, Fukuda was a hero, he could help –
“AH-AH-AH,” tutted a voice from the speakers.
The electronics shop exploded.  Every single device inside suddenly burst through the windows, walls, and ceiling.  Fukuda dove right into the falling shards, shielding the pinned woman.  Pipes and cables ripped up from the street.  The electronic devices whizzed toward them and the wires and metal wrapped around them, rising up to form a many-tentacled octopus shape.  A multitude of cables coiled and writhed ceaselessly around a bulbous conglomerate of tech, studded with cameras that blinked in every direction and crowned with three flat screen TVs.  The screens flashed to life, showing a composite view of a pale man in square-framed glasses. .
Fukuda snarled.  “Hatori!”
“You really made it too easy to find you,” Hatori sneered.  “For an underground hero, it’s surprising that you’d risk falling into a routine.”
Ootsuki sucked in a breath.  The electronic spy!  Fukuda was right, they’d been watching, they knew he’d been meeting with Ootsuki every week!
Fukuda’s hand plunged into his bag.  Immediately Hatori’s cables lashed out, striking Fukuda’s chest so hard Ootsuki could hear an audible crack from across the street.  He flew through the air until he hit a telephone pole and the cables immediately caught him, ripping his bag from his shoulder and lifting him into the air.
“Fukuda!” Ootsuki slams his palms against the glass, desperate.  Kinetic energy vibrated painfully through his wrists and the glass buzzed but didn’t break.  No, no, the villain had him, it was going to kill him!
He backed up and a hanging sculpture hit his head.  All that paper – but he wasn’t a hero, he had to call the police, had to get help –
“Rats are really more trouble than they’re worth to keep around,” Hatori said, smirking.  Fukuda gave an airless scream, and Ootsuki heard a terrible, organic pop.
The cables were squeezing.
“GET AWAY FROM HIM!”
He wasn’t sure how it had happened.  He’d been standing in his shop, frozen in horror, and then he was outside and his arm was moving in slow-motion and the paper fan he was holding cut clean through the cables holding Fukuda.
Fukuda hit the ground with a gasp, still wrapped in the metal coils, but his eyes were on something past Ootsuki.  Immediately he turned and swung the paper.  Again time skipped and there were stripped wires and computer bits littering the street in a circular blast radius, and Hatori’s metal octopus was hissing and stitching three of its limbs back together with angry clanks.
“Not another one!” Hatori snapped, face red.  “Why – are – there – heroes – everywhere?!”
“Ootsuki!” Fukuda gasped.
Cables reared up behind the octopus and struck like snakes.  Ootsuki tried to dodge but his legs were frozen.  Fukuda tackled him and they went rolling seconds before electrified prongs gored them to the street.  Fukuda grabbed a metal trash can and flung it hard.  Ootsuki winced when he heard the noise Fukuda’s chest made, but the trash can slammed down on the prongs with extra force and it lodged in the asphalt.  The two of them ducked into a narrow alley.
“The hell do you think you’re doing?!” Hatori demanded.
“I don’t know, I don’t know, my body just moved!  What do we do?!”
“I need my bag, you stay here!”
“Somehow I don’t think he’ll let me!”
“Correct!”
Ootsuki shrieked and flung his arm up right before a huge muscled octopus limb came sweeping down on them.  The blast broke it in two and they darted out of the alley.  Fukuda grabbed a loose bit of the broken limb and jammed it into another tentacle as they ran, forcing it back.  Ootsuki sent two more blasts at the tentacles darting into Fukuda’s blind spots and they sprinted out of range.
 Hatori snarled.  “Hold still already!”
“No thanks!”
The street was almost empty of shoppers except for the few who had been pinned or those trying to help them.  Ootsuki saw the moment Hatori caught sight of two teenagers wedged in a clothing shop entrance.  Something blazed in his chest and he slammed the fan down through the air, again and again, actually forcing Hatori back.
“Agh!  Little freak!”
“Ootsuki, your hands!”
He glanced down.  He saw the red dripping down his fingers and wrist but couldn’t feel the pain or even the wetness.
“Forget it, get the bag!”
“But – you – fine, just don’t die!” He turned and sprinted down the street, where his bag was sticking out from under someone’s discarded shopping bag.  Ootsuki darted forward, scooped a handful of receipts off the ground and hurled them.  The paper burst into confetti and was immediately attracted by the static cling of the TVs, blocking out all the video cameras facing their way.  Hatori shouted with rage.
Ootsuki stumbled back, gasping.  He was starting to feel the pain now.  His hands were shaking and blood dripped from his skin, under his fingernails.  He knew he’d cracked his bones because he suddenly knew exactly where they were in both hands.
He turned and sprinted for Fukuda, who was desperately hunting through his bag.
“Where is it, where is it, where is it,” he muttered.
“What are you looking for?”
“The EMP gun.  Small, black, yellow tape – I know I packed it, I definitely grabbed it off the counter –”
“THERE YOU ARE!”
Something sharp and hard slammed into the side of Ootsuki’s head.  He hit the ground.  The drone that had hit him banked hard and circled, two more joining it.  Ootsuki realized his hands were empty and rolled away before their blades could slice his arms.  Fukuda had done the same, but his broken ribs had hampered his movement and a lucky hit had knocked him flat.  Immediately a cable burst out of the ground and bound him tight.
Ootsuki’s hand plunged into Fukuda’s bag and pulled out what he’d hoped he would find - his little leatherbound book.  He tore out a dozen pages and struck, kinetic energy blasting the drones away.
He’d forgotten the octopus, though, and just as he made to cut Fukuda loose a cable came out of nowhere and slammed him in the stomach.
He lost time in a daze of gray and yellow pain until sharp hit his shoulder and he fell to his knees with a cry.  His vision slowly cleared.
The drone that had been aiming for his shoulder had switched off at the last second and now lay cracked and silent on the ground.  The other drones hit the ground beside him, and the cable that had been whipping out to grab him suddenly collapsed on the asphalt, limp, live wires still sparking at its tip.
Fukuda was standing in front of him, a small, buzzing gadget the size of a cell phone in his raised fist.
Hatori’s octopus spasmed and flailed.  Chunks of machinery were already falling off.  For a second Hatori looked livid, but then his face twisted in a vicious sneer and an octopus leg sliced clean through the whole front wall of a restaurant, peeling it away from the building like a slice of cake.  The people inside screamed.  Ootsuki readied his fan, but apparently that had been the most Hatori could do.  The TV screens distorted to static and went black.  With a final, ear-splitting shriek of tearing metal, the octopus slumped over, dead.
Ootsuki hadn’t realized he was about to join it until Fukuda grabbed his shoulder to keep him upright.  The two of them stared at each other for a few seconds, breathing hard.
“You,” Ootsuki said finally, “are going to owe me so many coffees after this.”
“You can have them after I murder you for jumping into the line of fire,” Fukuda said.  But there wasn’t any venom in his voice, and his eyes had the puppy dog look cranked up to eleven.  “What were you even thinking?!  You have zero battle experience, and that guy was - villains aren’t a video game, Ootsuki!  He would have actually murdered you!”
He ducked his head.  “Sorry.”
“Don’t - don’t apologize, just -”
“Hero-san!” called a voice.  It was one of the teenagers Hatori had almost attacked.  They were in the store right next to the restaurant, and it looked like he’d managed to squeeze himself out, but his companion had a thick river of blood running down their face that Ootsuki hadn’t noticed before.  “Hero-san, I - please help him - ”
“Coming,” Fukuda called immediately.  “And stay put, Ootsuki, you’re next.”
“Not going anywhere ‘till I get my coffee.”
Fukuda shot him a look, part concern, part exasperation, then turned to help the teenager.
Ootsuki leaned on a trashcan, catching his breath.  His hands hurt.  He was trying to avoid looking at them because he was pretty sure they were fractured and he’d pass out if he saw it.
It had felt...strange, to be out on the battlefield like that.  Not natural, not exactly, but like he had fit perfectly into place.  As if the universe had simply been waiting for him to do it and the response was simply, “Of course.”
Shock gave people such weird thoughts.  He shook his head and looked around.  Little shreds of torn paper drifted through the air, like scattered snowfall.  Bits of computer modems and gaming consoles covered the street, torn open, their silicon circuits glittering in the sun.  The security gates had retracted.  Some of the trapped shoppers were cautiously poking their heads out of the buildings, checking that it was safe.  It wasn’t; there were a lot of live wires sticking out of the ground and the octopus carcass, throwing sparks.
It didn’t smell all that great, either.  His senses were still sharp from all the adrenaline pouring through him.  He could smell the burned plastic from the machines and the ozone of the sparking wires.  He could even smell something odd from the restaurant Hatori had sliced open.  Something burning?
He looked closer.  A dark shape was sticking out of the wall.  It looked like a pipe with a little yellow sticker on it.
Gas.
He saw everything in perfect clarity.  The brilliance of the sky, so bright blue it looked painted by a child.  The shadow of Fukuda’s back, the exact way his head turned when he smelled it too.  The hot metal of the trash can under Ootsuki’s broken fingers.  And floating gently past, torn free from that little book by the explosions, a napkin folded like a tiger.
He grabbed it and slashed with everything he had.
The blast he made created a huge vacuum down the middle of the street, sucking away the explosion and heat and gas.  Hot blades drove up the bones in Ootsuki’s arms, splitting them in half.  Blazing pain seared his brain.  Sound warped and distorted like it was coming from underwater.  He thought he heard someone screaming, realized it was himself.
He was on the ground.  His arms were on fire.  They had to be on fire.  They hurt so badly.  Shadows were moving over him.  One of them reached out to him, familiar, calling his name, but before he could answer more shadows came down like a curtain and he sank into the heavy black.
Ootsuki woke up slowly.  He was lying on a bed that crinkled loudly whenever he existed, and the ceiling was styrofoam-white.  The smell of rubber and cleaner filled his nostrils. A hospital.
“I guess it’s nice that I survived,” he mused aloud.
“Gee, you think?”
“Fukuda!”
He bolted upright.  Fukuda was sitting on a chair next to him, a book on his lap.  He smiled and put a warm hand on Ootsuki’s arm.  “Relax, the doctors saw you but you’re still going to be pretty tired.”
“You’re okay!”
“Yes, yes, I’m fine, but how are your hands?”
“My - oh…”
He held them up.  The last thing he remembered, they were bleeding like crazy and felt like he’d fractured every bone in his fingers.  Now they looked perfectly fine.  In fact…
“No scars?  They’re gone?”
Fukuda looked apologetic.  “You, er.  Sort of blasted most of your skin off.  So when I healed it, all the skin grew back more or less uniform.  I hope you don’t mind.  We’re mostly here because it’s standard procedure to bring someone to the hospital just in case there’s something a field medic missed.”
“But you’re okay?” Ootsuki asked again, searching his face.  “Last time I saw you, you were covered in blood and I think your rib had broken.”
He grimaced.  “Ribs, plural.  But I promise I’m okay.  I just - the way you nearly got killed - ”  He broke off, shaking his head.  “Are you sure you’re alright?”
“I...I guess so?”  He looked around, trying to distract himself.  It wasn’t just a hospital room, it was a private room, with a flatscreen TV, a vase of fresh flowers, and a window with a panoramic view of the city. “I can’t afford all this.”
“Don’t worry, heroes get free private rooms.”
“I’m not a hero.”
“I don’t see why not,” said a voice from the door.  They looked up as Shou phased through the doorway, a tray of hospital goop in his hands.  “Whoops, almost lost the Jell-O.  I pulled a few strings and got you a temporary hero’s license about thirty minutes after the whole Hatori thing.  So technically you’re a hero for the next three months.  Welcome to my agency.”
“I-I’m not a hero!”
Shou raised an eyebrow.  “Again, I don’t see why not.  How do you feel?  I’m not asking about your physical state.  Do you feel horrified, apathetic, jittery - or do you feel like you’re ready to do it all over again?”
Ootsuki blinked a few times.  “The second one, I guess.  How did you…?”
He nodded.  “I saw the fight.  You got thrashed because you’re a total noob, but you have good reflexes and use your quirk in creative ways.  My agency could use you.  And Fukuda’s obsessed with you now and not me, which is a plus.”
“Shou!” Fukuda protested.  “I’m not obsessed with him -”
“You use the first sweater he ever bought you for ‘emergency hugs’ and set his picture as the background on your phone.  Besides,” Shou continued cheerfully over Fukuda’s sputtering, “Hero work pays well.  Unless you have another source of income I don’t know about, because your shop is basically gravel.”
“What?!”
He leaped for the TV remote and flipped channels frantically.  He found the evening news and, there in the background, was his shop - or rather, a lot of vacant air and broken plaster where his shop used to be.  He could still see a few strips of paper fluttering through the air.
“Oh, no no no no no,” he moaned.  “Everything I owned was in that shop!”
“Everything?” Shou asked curiously.
“He lived in the storeroom at the back,” Fukuda explained.
Ootsuki dragged a hand down his face.  “I have a little money saved up, but I’ll need that for food and inventory until my insurance kicks in.”
“I have an extra bedroom,” Fukuda said.  “I mean - it could be only temporary, if you like.  And only if you’re comfortable with it.  I have about three bonuses I haven’t even used yet, we could buy furniture or paper or anything you’d need.”
Shou made a muffled-sounding squeak.
“What,” Fukuda said flatly.
“You two are actually sharing an apartment?” Shou asked.
Ootsuki turned red.  “I - I guess you could say that?  We never really - I
Shou was grinning like a cat that had drunk half the cream and intentionally spilled the rest.  “So, to be clear.  You met by chance, had a coffee shop AU side story, fought a villain, and then…”
“Don’t you dare,” Fukuda warned.
Shou was grinning from ear to ear.
“And then they were roommates,” he whispered.
Then he phased through the door, laughing, dodging pillows from two very red-faced heroes.
