A Short Strange Story...

Last year, in 2021, I went to see Bob Weir and the Wolf Bros. at the Palace Theatre in Columbus, Ohio. The night before the show I went to see Circles Around the Sun play at a Tavern in town. While waiting for that show to start I met this Head named Travis. He was coming from Asheville, North Carolina, following Bobby for this whole solo tour. We chatted up about this tour and nexts then the band started, and I enjoyed the rest of my night excited to see the main event show the next night. 

To my surprise, there was a miniature shakedown street on the sidewalk right outside of the theatre. These volunteers that work for the Columbus Arts Association didn’t know what to do or think about The Heads. They were used to plays and musicals, this was the first rock, “real”, whatever you want to call it concert since I’ve been living in Columbus - which hasn't been that long. Anyways, I was enjoying myself embarking into the shakedown to see all the amazing lot tee’s up for sale. 

Without any surprise, right as I walked up to shakedown there was Travis with a beer in one hand and the other pointing one finger up into the sky. We exchanged hellos. Though I didn’t have a miracle to give him, I wished upon him good spirits that one will be given to him. He thanked me, and then in that moment a man stepped out of the crowd and asked him if he needed one. 

Such a crazy moment. Since getting into The Dead I’ve heard and learned about what miracles mean on the lot. Since I haven’t been to many shows I didn’t know if this way of entry was achievable or not. Now - I’m a firm believer. 

We all went in, and later that night I saw that Travis made his way all the way to the front of the theatre dancing and spinning only a couple feet away from Bobby himself. That whole night was filled with good tunes and good times. Ended up running into Travis the next year on the Dead & Co Summer Tour. Hope to see him at the next one.
