Demon to Freddy, Angel to Quentin

Hello friends!! Got two very long requests that asked for a scenario based on Pinhead's mercy for children; naturally, he would hate Freddy Krueger and want to spare Quentin. One was @chaoticlovingdreamer, and the other was anonymous, so thank you both very much for your requests!! I hope you enjoy this :) <3

Run... run... keep running...

His chest rose and fell shakily with his breaths, sloshing in the mud and trying not to fall over into it. Freddy Krueger was right on Quentin's heels, metal scraping metal just behind him. Even running for his life, it was so hard to stay awake. His eyes wanted to close, and his body wanted to give out, to let him rest and regain his energy so he could keep running, but if he stopped now, he would die, and Quentin couldn't let himself die.

... faster...

He zig-zagged between trees and around tall white fencing until he made it into one of the houses, but it was a dead end.

... turn him around... faster...

Upstairs he went, and back down again, around one side and back through to the other—Freddy couldn't tell from which direction his panting came, but he was determined to catch Quentin again. He was Freddy's final prize, the last before the Entity would reward him handsomely for a job well done, but the boy would never let him.

Quentin had made it back into the school basement, tripping down the stairs when he scared himself into thinking he heard the scraping knives again, but it was only steam-works. The fall was unfortunate; the moment his palms hit the concrete floor, he'd been coaxed into the dream world once again, desperately listening for the killer's lullaby.

The good thing was that Quentin had some time to breathe. He looked around the basement for anything that might help him keep Freddy at a distance: a flashlight, scrap metal, or dare he hope for an explosive that someone may have left behind for him. Nothing popped up that he cared about except for a broken bone piece that he may have been able to use if it weren't so dull.

He walked around slowly, ears on high alert, when he noticed something glimmering by the mattress. Upon closer inspection, it was a cube with intricate engravings, nothing he'd ever seen before in his wake or sleep. He thought it must have been one of Freddy's tricks to distract him, or something to throw him off so he wouldn't even hear his threatening hums.

Speaking of which, he heard the faintest hint of the schoolchildren's song as it became louder every second he kept standing still. Swiftly, he was inside of a locker with the strange box held close to his chest. Quentin always found it hard to keep still, especially when he couldn't tell just how close Freddy was to him. His thumb traced along the grooves in the box, feeling for its patterns as his heartbeat settled down.

Shh... don't move... he'll leave...

His thumb found a circle and passed over it, keeping it in motion the longer he kept listening to his thoughts without paying attention—without realizing that the box was expanding between his fingers. It was a puzzle box, that much he could gather, but solving a puzzle would be such a waste of time. He kept it in his hand, moving his thumb along the edges and around the corners, until the lullaby came closer and left. Freddy didn't find him. He couldn't have looked very hard.

As Quentin stepped out of the locker, he was scared more stiffly than he was any time he laid eyes on Freddy. The dream world had become darker, less like a trance and more like a hallucination. Standing in front of him was a creature—a man?—clad in dark leather and with nails in his head, a pallor like he was death himself.

"The box," it said, "you opened it.

"Enough for me, anyway, so I came."

Quentin's eyes nearly rolled out of his skull, and he dropped the box to the ground without a second thought. The man looked at him for a moment, observing his unmoving fright and waiting for him to react any more.

"Why?" he asked in his deep, thunderous voice. Quentin didn't know what to say.

"This isn't real," he finally whispered, more than confused as he'd never seen this thing before; and, as far as he knew, no one else had either. "Oh, god, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, I just..."

"Wait."

He waited.

"You're not Fred Krueger."

Quentin stepped back, pressing into the locker as he shook his head. "No, he's—" he stuttered, "I don't know where he is, but he's after me." A moment passed, and the man looked around before a smile pulled on his lips.

"He's here!"

And back into the locker for Quentin as the lullaby suddenly became too loud for him to bear, and those finger-knives echoed through the steam-filled basement halls. Krueger taunted, called out for Quentin, but he was met with somebody much more powerful than the teenager he'd taken advantage of for so long. Even the killer was dumbstruck upon being greeted with a strong, "You're Fred Krueger... I've been waiting for you."

No warning, no stalling, and even less time to entertain his freedom, Freddy's flesh was pierced by a chain that flew from a fissure out of thin air. He screamed in agony, just as confused as Quentin, who watched in terror and a feeling of catharsis. That thing had come for Krueger, and Quentin helped find him.

The bladed glove didn't stand a chance against just how many chains were grabbing onto Freddy through the thick of his sweater and into his skin. First his arms, then his legs, then his body and his face, all pulling in different directions until it threatened to slip right off.

Before that, though, the ground cracked beneath Freddy's feet, and from it rose a pillar with hooks and chains and a collection of body parts, all in pieces ripped to shreds—presumably all victims of this otherworldly being.

It scraped along Freddy's back, and the chains wrapped him around him, binding his limbs against the splintered wood before it sucked him into the same portal it came from. The lullaby had gone silent. Freddy Krueger was gone.

"Come out," the man said, turning back to face Quentin's locker, and he was too afraid to defy him. "Leave," he ordered. "Close the box. I'll return."

Quentin looked at the cube he'd still been holding onto, eyes darting between it and the man hovering in front of him. He pushed the piece back into its place, and with yellow and orange sparks along his face, the man disappeared. Just like that.

"He... killed Krueger...

"He killed him?"

Relationship goals: I think this is probably John's healthiest canon relationship. I also think that part is amazing when Stephan is going a bit crazy after losing his arm and John helps him snap out of it even though he's also dealing with his own heartbreak at that point. I think they are generally good for each other.

their story is more interesting than the ship itself: to me at least. Here I mostly think how John is Percy's superior and Stephan is Webers, etc. that whole mess.

I like it in theory; in practice - it's cute but missing that special something: this is not a critique, I like my food way too spicy and my ships way too problematic

William Ransom / John Cinnamon:

I'm neutral + open to it: I know people started shipping them after Bees and the thing is I still haven't read more than like 1/4 of that book and even that has been overshadowed by trauma/drama/heartbreak/rage. So I don't feel like I have much to say on this ship bc I haven't paid much attention to them. Eventually I do plan on maybe somehow tackling Bees and then we'll see.

Claire / Frank:

fandom is ruining them: not as in ruined them for me that I can't enjoy them now, but as in people have really-really strange notions about who is at fault here (a little bit both of them but Claire is definitely more the villain here for me ngl). Another thing is that I absolutely hate how people keep tagging their Claire/Jamie fics Claire/Frank and then it's only just bashing Frank about how bad and abusive he is (hello??? are we consuming the same source material???). It makes it really hard to find those few and far between actual Claire/Frank fics and it's infuriating.

would/do read fic about them: I would read a hell of a lot more if not for the above problem and general lack of fics

aesthetically it's GREAT: come on, Tobias Menzies and Caitriona Balfe. Pretty, pretty people.

this ship can fit so much projection in it: I think it's romantic that they got married spontaneously. I think it's admirable that they went through a long-distance relationship period, stayed together, and tried again. I think their age difference is perfectly fine. I think they would have had so much potential had Claire not fallen through some fucking magic stones and [redacted]

I love them. I'm not super involved in OL rn as you know and I don't have plans of writing with them anytime soon but I do love them and can still get quite passionate about them as you can see.

1. What made you ship it?

Would you believe I honestly don't remember?? Like, I don't know that I was paying a comparatively huge amount of attention to specifically the pair of them together (as opposed to just JGY in general as a secondary character) during my first watch; and then the first JGY fic I wrote actually had very little xiyao in it at all? But their interactions in the show itself were definitely a big part of it, even if I don't really remember what ended up plunging me fully into the deep end on this.

Like just - the combination of how clearly invested they are in each other, along with the sheer pain of the canonical ending they have? Like, I wouldn’t refer to it as a “betrayal” situation, per se, because I feel like it’s a lot more complicated than that, but the particular sort of tragedy of JGY’s downfall, and the way LXC is there for the entire thing, clearly hurting and confused and just wanting to understand? I think I’ve remarked on here before that even when I like a character or relationship in a story that gets a fairly happy ending, I tend to need that element of tragedy, of this narrative was not meant for you to triumph, to get... really sucked in and have a lot of staying power there. So xiyao it is :’D

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

Ah, man, where and how to even begin... I think one of the big things is how much their interactions are bound up in the necessities of their public faces; how much they take expressions of courtesy and turn them into the most personal and meaningful rituals we see between people? How they have these public faces that are important, are deeply significant to who they are and how they’re comfortable moving around in the world, and are necessary for the kinds of positions that allow them to achieve what they find most important socially! - and then also, you peel back a layer or two, and get the absolute warmth and love and passionate care of their private selves, always turned toward one another.

Which then relates to - these are two political players, eventually leaders, and they have such a partnership and understanding on that level as well! They each understand how position and negotiation and compromise and sacrifice for a goal bigger than just yourself are fundamental pieces of the other, and they each live within those bounds - not always happily? But that these are two people whose relationship exists firmly within the world (even as it’s also an escape and respite from it), and they have that room made for outside responsibilities as simply a matter of course. (I think this is... something that appeals to me specifically as a facet of this relationship between two adults, at the place where I currently am in life, too.)

And lest I forget, of course - the extremely hot and also extremely emotionally cathartic D/s potential ;A; Like, I will ship a lot of things on primarily a kink basis, ngl, and especially here I feel like the introduction of a playing-with-power-dynamics-and-abdication-of-responsibility element just ties in so well with the thematic material both characters are dealing with in the text? Which, I mean, is why it’s compelling and makes sense on a characterisation level, for that matter. But also just. y’know. (LHK & ZZJ as) LXC & JGY are really attractive :’D

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Other than that... (I mean I feel like I’ve surrounded myself with a lot of likeminded people re: their dynamic, so what might be ~unpopular in the fandom at large feels certainly less so in my little bubble...) - oh, here’s one: I tend to think of them sleeping together as something that takes as while to happen, because they’re each so wary of each other’s boundaries, and JGY especially is full of neuroses and LXC doesn’t want to push for anything he’s not okay with. Like, different scenarios where they hop into bed pre- or immediately post-Sunshot can be fun to read, but they never quite ring true to me, and I think a certain amount of tension or trepidation around sex for a couple years into their relationship (even though they’re both very into each other) is pretty important to how I would characterise them.

Anyway, I’m sure there’s others I could think of if prompted more specifically, but... that’s what I’ve got! Thank you for the ask! <3

You're right, they absolutely are. I'm sorry in advance that this is gonna be LONG and I'm on mobile so I can't even add a read more;;

1. Talk about the first ship you ever had

So I'm SURE there were relationships I was invested in in movies and cartoons I watched as a child (I've always been a sucker for romance, even though there was that period when I didn't want to admit it) but I can't remember anything from very far back;; So it was either Ron and Hermione from Harry Potter or Ichigo and Masaya from Tokyo Mew Mew, whichever I read first.

2. Talk about three of the most important ships throughout your life

GOSH. You can't do this to me. I guess Romione because it was the time in my preteens when I was becoming more aware of... stuff, in general, abs the two cemented my love for friends-to-lovers. Then Ioryuu, because I've never been AS invested in and passionate about a ship before and likely never will. Nothing can compare to that intensity and ngl I miss it;; I miss the genuine hype I felt in my heart that made me interact with people and make things. So many things. I honestly can't think of a third one with such a lasting impact, sorry;;

3. What's your current OTP?

I imagine Souyo scenarios in my head every night before falling sleep and every morning after waking up, this is not a joke not an exaggeration. I still feel a little traitorous saying this on tumblr but their dynamic IS somewhat similar to the way I see Ioryuu so-

I don't think I have one? I have dislikes, some of them strong, but I don't see any of them often enough to be, like, actively angry. I have better uses for my time than willingly exposing myself to stuff I don't like.

5. Do you have any poly ships?

Not generally, juggling two characters is enough work lol. The only poly ships I've ever really actively shipped are Niels, Duncan and Natalie from the web comic Niels And the Gang by humon and Kinatsuen from Boueibu, but neither are actively on my mind much these days.

8. Have you ever shipped yourself with a character?

BOY HAVE I EVER. I've seen someone on tumblr have a side blog for self-shopping and not gonna lie, it's an excellent idea. My late teens were spent reading character x reader fics on Quotev and I started my fic career with the same genre. I don't really know what to do with myself when I DON'T actively ship myself with a character, which is my state of being now that Yosuke surpassed Yoosung as my favorite character;; Ibushi and Yoosung are the biggest ones but man oh boy I have shipped myself with characters from early age and I'm showing no signs of stopping! There's a reason that I main dating sims.

15. Have you ever "shipped at first sight"?

Not for long. I SUCK at forming first impressions. Usually if I start thinking I'll ship something, I end up not being so invested in it after all, and instead shipping something I swore off at first lmao. Which leads us to...

16. Talk about a ship you initially disliked

As a rule of thumb, all of them. I don't understand HOW it keeps happening but somehow almost all the ships I truly care/d about (that I didn't start shipping through osmosis before knowing them in the source material) started out as something I thought I "wouldn't be able to get behind." Gajevy. Shikatema. Sasunaru. Doctor/Rose. Karabita. Atsutodo. Kiribaku. Yoozen. Enatsu. Freaking IORYUU. EVEN SOUYO. IT'S BEEN YEARS I REALLY SHOULD KNOW THE PATTERN BY NOW

17. Talk about a pairing you've stopped shipping romantically

Like, I started to think they're better as friends after all? I guess NaLi. Then again, I mostly only shipped them out of spite in the first place because I wanted a counter for N/a//Lu, which I never liked at all;;

20. Talk about a ship you feel alone in shipping

Now this time I can say for sure that there isn't one. I can't come up with ships myself and stay on board if there isn't content for it, canon or otherwise;; It's not a conscious decision or anything, it's just how my mind works. I get attached to stuff by exposure, whether from fans or the source material, and if the source material has enough content for two characters for me to pick up on and become interested, it's guaranteed to be enough to become a somewhat popular ship.

21. Is there a ship you just don't get, but have nothing against?

Actually... That's the extent I go to with notp'ing these days. I'm passionate about the right to ship whatever you want so by proxy I can't have anything "against" a ship, even if the sheer thought of it existing makes me nauseous. And I know how to think from points of view other than my own, so I can usually see the appeal, even if it appeals to me personally less than eating dog shit while walking barefoot on rusty nails that are also on fire.

That said, the only ships I have on my Tumblr blacklist are Yoo//ra/n and Suza//lu/lu because they're both popular ships for characters whose tags I am/was following and therefore get suggested a lot even if I want following anyone who ships then. Oh, and all B/LMa//tsu ships! I generally can't feel good about incestuous ships, but can and will fight for their shippers' right to do as they please as long as they stay respectful. (never saw blmatsus who weren't respectful. saw a plethora of anti-blmatsus who were absolute demons. actually the reason i moved away from the last remnants of my anti mindset was that i didn't want to be associated with THOSE anti-blmatsus, when the shippers they wanted dead were all such sweet people. food for thought.)

22. Which of your ships have the best chemistry?

All of them?? Lmao I don't understand this question, isn't shipping all about liking the chemistry between characters? Or the potential for it I guess, in which case the chemistry is whatever you want it to be, which is great B) I'm sorry I keep accidentally dodging questions I'm bad at choosing examples from a long, unordered list

23. Which of your ships deserve better writing?

Hhhhhhh I shipped Jerza for years and was still unsatisfied with their ending, Jellal didn't get to heal enough and we didn't really see them working through their past in an effective way and getting comfortable around each other. 25. Have you ever shipped a pairing before you even started watching the show/movie simply because of gifs/graphics or similar?

EYUP. Harumichi was my otp for like a whole year before I saw a single episode with them lol. It was crazy, but it was REAL. I've also went into shows already paying attention to things I knew my friends/people I follow shipped, kind of hoping I'd get into it.

26. Have you noticed a pattern in your shipping? Is there a romantic dynamic I'm writing these questions down from screenshots and I cropped the rest of this one out by accident rip

Eeeh I go for the obvious. Best friend pairs, obvious pining, some rivalry with sexual tension, though I don't really know what to do with those. Then there's the fact that I never see it coming sick Persona 5 reference bro and start shipping the couple I thought "should just be friends" at first. This is more about my relationship to the ships than their dynamic but it's very constant...

27. Is there a ship you've shipped for most of your life?

Hmmm well I got into HP and started shipping Romione sometime in mid elementary school so it's definitely been more than half my lifetime since, but I don't really know if I "ship it" anymore. I didn't start disliking them or anything but for me, "shipping" is an active intrest in a fictional relationship, so if it reaches the stage where I like it, in theory, but I don't have the feels, it doesn't really count. That's why I can say I like ships without shipping them. It's gotta be actively on my brain, man.

31. Talk about one of your favorite headcanons for a ship you love

I haven't mentioned Kannao once, which is criminal. So here's some of what I imagine their future to be like :D I've been getting new Persona followers recently so here's something for you to unfollow me over lmao

So first of all I ignore the canon that Naoto goes back to the city for her detective work after her first year of high school, shhh she stays in Inaba, only taking the occasional jobs. She and Kanji start dating during the spring break before their second year and get more comfortable with each other, so that the next summer they're still cute and very much themselves (which means somewhat reserved) but not as awkward anymore :) I haven't thought about what happens after they graduate but they get married in their early 20s and have a son <3 (Chie and Yukiko adopted their daughter only slightly earlier. They may or may not have had a bit of a competition going on) ((yes Souyo are very much together but if they end up having children I haven't thought about it it's later))

Kanji manages the textile shop and Naoto helps when she's free from detective stuff. They live in Inaba but Naoto is away quite often for her gigs;; She takes up a few jobs less when Kouta is little though so he wouldn't feel less close to his Mom than his Dad.

Both Kanji and Naoto suffered from unfair expectations growing up, so they try their best to make up for it with Kouta's upbringing. They want him to feel comfortable being himself and free to express himself the way he wants; they make sure he knows he'll always be loved and supported, and to never be ashamed of who he is. As a child it doesn't even occur to him that many social norms and social expectations exist, because Naoto and Kanji pretty much let him do whatever as long as he isn't hurting himself or anyone else. They might go a little overboard though, giving into Kouta's whims without much consideration at all. The Amagi Aunties enforce rules and keep kids grounded in reality much better lmao

40. If you could change one thing about your otp, what would that be?

HMNGHNMHGNMGH I WAMT YOSUKE'S INTERNALIZED BULLSHIT ACKNOWLEDGED!! It's there AtlUS!! Stop pretending oh my god.... I love the Dancing All Night story mode (so far. I am by no means done); Yosuke gets cool moments and Yu's internal monologue really shows how much he appreciates him. The dynamic is so much better than with a silent protagonist, and thank god they didn't go with the tactless anime Yu (as fun as he is). I know there are a bunch of nods to the cut romance across spinoffs but mannnn... I wish they were more serious about it. At this point it's not even that far-fetched to think Yosuke has feelings for Yu that he may or may not be aware of, and I know that Yu as the player character can't be too tied down to one option in canon, but still... Even the clown gets tired of jokes at some point. One can dream.

My take on their canon relationship:

For most pairs, I feel like this is a pretty simple question. Not so for Mikasa and Annie—one of the MANY reasons I need Annie to come back asap and offer some material for this. There’s a tension between them two that’s difficult for me to classify; for example, the “Annie. Fall.” moment, when Mikasa rests atop the Annie’s head and Annie falls with her chopped fingers extended. I feel like there’s a great deal of respect between them, and maybe an implicit acknowledgement from Annie that Mikasa could be the most dangerous person she knows (at least until she realizes Eren is a titan shifter).

idk man. I guess to put it simply, I think they’re mutually aware that they have the potential to be good friends or terrible enemies, and they’re stuck in no-man’s land because neither of them really wants to make a decisive move one way or the other. Until, you know.

Do I ship them:

Absolutely. I’m hella invested in how they interact.

Reasons why I ship them:

ngl the first reason why I started to ship them was that there’s so much gorgeous fan art of them. Curiosity about and appreciation for their dynamic came afterwards. I think Mikasa and Annie are more mature than a lot of their peers, and that combined with their combat skills + confidence puts them on pretty even footing. I love the idea of the two of them finding pleasure in competing, especially in fighting. I also like that the two of them live their lives driven by personal dreams (return home to her father, stay by Eren’s side) as opposed to revolutionary, ideological ones. Also, major reason here, I love the tragedy of the betrayal and battle. The feels are too strong. And the domestic fluff is a d o r a b l e.

Headcanon(s):

Mikasa is jealous that Annie can show off to Eren.

Annie feels guilty that she’s relieved Mikasa’s parents were killed by bandits and not by the fall of Wall Maria.

Mikasa and Annie enjoy joking in a deadpan manner with one another. People who hear them may be baffled and wonder how they can discuss absurd things like Instructor Keith Shadis’s secret love affair with Commander Pixis so gravely.

Annie’s feet are incredibly ticklish; Annie considers making use of this the one and only way to cheat in a fight. Mikasa takes full advantage when they tussle in bed.

Okay I have quite a few unpopular opinions I’d like to get off my chest so here we go (keep in mind these are p much just personal preferences so don’t feel bad if you actually like the things I’m about to rag on lmao)

Also I apologize if these show up in the actual tags I don’t want to put slashes in all of these names and ships RIP

!!!WARNING FOR BIG GAME SPOILERS!!!

1. Akechi/Akira is my least fav p5 ship and ngl I feel burning disgust 98% of the time I see it. Both characters are interesting on their own and I love the similarities and contrasts between them (I live for those perfect protag/antag foils), and I do really like those bits where they could ALMOST be close friends but then it gets fucked up mmm. I also like 1 of them pining for the other on occasion (or in Akechi’s case, possibly going past that into obsessive lust) but the other has no interest in anything deeper. But I can’t see them in love at all, especially in content that sticks to canon since there’s so many time constraints and scenarios that would prevent them from having the opportunity to actually form a true relationship.

But also putting all that aside it mostly bothers me because the entire pairing just REEKS of the completely overdone “These two rivals are opposites and boys so they HAVE TO BE secretly in love and super gay for each other” kinda thing that used to be (coughstilliscough) all over the place in other fandoms. Like, I guess potentially in the right hands it could be done well and actually develop the relationship between them, but I really just despise that type of ship in 98% of fandoms and nearly any time I see Akechi/Akira content it seems pretty forced and is clearly wish fulfillment/desperate craving for gay representation.

RIP I know that sounds harsh as hell, I really don’t know how to word my feelings on it in a more coherent manner so this is the best I can explain it? People can ship whatever they want ofc and if I ever spot good content or it has smth I like (like omo fics) I’m down to read it, but it’s definitely a ship I usually try to avoid simply because I’m sick and tired of seeing it EVERYWHERE (and there’s so many other people Akira is canonically closer to/much more likely to fall in love with)

2. In a similar vein, Akira/Yusuke gets on my nerves almost as much as the above. I just don’t see much chemistry between them so it seems a bit forced, but also it’s kind of a personal bias because I just. I don’t like Yusuke. He irritates me so much he somehow pushed all my buttons when I first met him and I ignored him FOR MY ENTIRE GAME and gave him shitty coffee and if Akechi and Mishima hadn’t made me even angrier I probably would call him my least fav character in the game. That said, I’m going to try hanging out with him more than twice and actually USE HIM IN MY PARTY in my ng+ so maybe I’ll learn to warm up to him. And despite my distaste I will admit his lines are some of THE FUCKING FUNNIEST (esp his bits in Mementos jfc)

Also Akira/Ryuji irritates me too bc I also get real tired of the ‘bffs fall in love trope’ and I think they each have ppl that fit them better, but in some instances it can be really cute or kinda deep so I enjoy looking at it on occasion. I’m mostly just tired of it drowning the tags when I’m looking for other Akira pairings lmao

3. Sadayo Kawakami isn’t that great and idk why ppl hail her as one of the best girls. I actually liked her a lot when she first appeared in the game but once you start her social link and get into all the other shit I just got really bored and annoyed with her? I don’t know why because while I didn’t finish it (I got to 7 or 8 I think but then the late game plot dragged me into madness so I couldn’t find time to meet her anymore) I got to one of the big plot points in her arc and it was sad that it happened but…I was already so irritated by all of her lying and she was starting to rub me the wrong way bc despite her being 'kind’ it seemed like any dialogue I picked even when it helped her brought some snark or just obnoxious moping from her so I just kinda. Stopped giving a shit about her. I’ll max her in NG+ this time so I can see the end and hopefully I’ll feel more for her since I know most of what happened but I don’t think she’ll ever be as important to me as The Squad Girls or Tae or Hifumi.

As a character I still like her and there are certain plot aspects I really find interesting/deliciously angsty if expanded on, but I definitely wouldn’t say she’s waifu material lmao

4. Now for an actual game critique: I feel they definitely started off WAY too strong with the first palace/boss, so most of the future game (palace design/boss fights, not the plot the plot’s always top tier) seem kind of underwhelming by comparison. Like the entire way the plot progresses in Palace #1 is awesome when you’re brand new to the game/series and the boss is the perfect Holy Shit moment because, like, just look at that revolting mess, it’s super different from anything you saw before that point in the game and kinda scary to fight and it’s badass. But then a lot of the rest just doesn’t have the same shock or high stakes feeling to it or the palaces aren’t as interesting. Cool and creative bosses/neat palace ideas: #1, #4 (boss and 1 bit of plot, the palace itself got pretty repetitive to trudge through), #6 (amazing boss, loved the fighting arena bit and palace aesthetic, but hated trudging to collect shit just so Akechi could slide us through the plot), #8 (rad design, cool 1st boss, Yaldawhoever was kinda lame to fight tho bc it was a lot of the multi-bodypart stuff we’ve seen before)

Headcanons

So I’ve been chatting with some people, and a few of them have asked about my headcanons… and tbh, I have reaaallllly in-depth headcanons about Kureto, Seishiro, and their mother. Like I could write a whole fic about it. But I don’t have the time or the patience haha. Therefore, I’m putting a summary of them under the readmore. It’s probably pretty disorganized, so I apologize in advance for that. Also, I reference some spoilers from the most recent chapter, so be warned!

I’ve tried to keep things canon-compliant, but a lot of these headcanons were developed before the most recent chapters so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ngl I feel like I’m doing Tenri a disservice here b/c I made him out to be a pretty terrible person, but maybe it’s really Shi-chan ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Let’s begin…

So I think on the ONS wiki, it says that Tenri had a lover that was executed, and this lover was presumably the mother of Kureto and Seishiro. Ngl, I have no idea where that came from (probably a fan book or something), so I don’t know the specifics of what was said, so this may stray into AU territory.

To start, in my headcanons (AU? I think I should say AU at this point), Mama Hiiragi is a woman from China. I gave her the name Minori (meaning “truth”) before I started thinking about her origins, and I realize Minori is a Japanese name and not a Chinese name, but I’m kind of attached to it at this point. I’ll work that out later. Maybe she changed her name when she came to Japan. But anyways, her mysterious origins play a big role in the AU. All Kureto and Seishiro know at first is that their mother was the daughter of the leader of a very important magic organization in China that fell into ruin after some experiments went wrong. They’re under the impression that Minori negotiated for a spot among the Hiiragi (which isn’t exactly true, more about that in the next paragraph) but they are aware that she holds an extremely tenuous position within the family.

I’m still developing this, but what Kureto and Seishiro do not know is that Minori is closely related to the experiments in China that went wrong. In fact, she was the one being experimented upon (voluntarily). Obviously, the Chinese and the Japanese have very different cultures, but Chinese religions/philosophies and spirituality did influence Japan throughout various times in history, so I imagine that their magic and talismans would be at least somewhat similar in the Owari no Seraph world. So with this being the case, the Chinese magic organizations would be pursuing the power of the cursed gear as well. Just like the Hiiragis seemed to be interesting in messing around with genetic experimentation, so was the organization Minori came from. They were able to successfully introduce demon material into her body, but they lost control of the experiment. This in addition to infighting within the organization left it vulnerable to be destroyed by other rival organizations in China. Since the Hiiragis had also been researching genetic engineering, Minori’s circumstances caught their interest, and they offered to help treat her in exchange for information about the experiments. Minori complied.

In my headcanons, Tenri was actually not the head of the Hiiragi clan at this point in time. His father was still alive. I think Tenri was around 24 when Kureto was born, and I think the wiki said it was Tenri’s parents (or at least his family) that had his lover executed, so Grandpappy Hiiragi has to be around somewhere. Anyways, for Tenri to have 4 extremely attractive children, I think he would have to have been pretty attractive himself when he was young. And, well, probably a bit horny too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. To secure her place in the family, Minori sort of latched herself on to Tenri. They didn’t necessarily have a deep care for one another, but uh-oh spaghettios, now Minori is pregnant with Kureto. This worries the elder Hiiragi and the leaders of the other noble clans (I will now refer to them altogether as the Elders) because she was not even being remotely considered for contributing to the Hiiragi progeny. But this also provides them a unique opportunity to see if a child with a strong affinity for the power of the demons can be created since Minori has been experimented on. During the pregnancy, Minori begins to understand just how unethical the Mikado no Oni are. And then Kureto is born. Tests on the infant show extremely promising results, though it is unclear if the child’s talents comes from the Minori’s experimental augmentation or Minori’s inherent proficiency with magic. The Elders decide to see just how much potential the infant has, and they subject him to horrific experiments that frequently involve excruciating pain to see if they can enhance the child’s strengths further. Minori at first objects, but it becomes clear that if the experimentation on little Kureto ceases, there will no longer be a reason for the Mikado no Oni to keep him alive. They would dispose of him.

The tests on Kureto yield good results, but not good enough. The reasons why the Mikado no Oni were trying to activate the Seraph of the End haven’t been made quite clear yet at the writing of this post, and to be perfectly honest, any speculations I might have about them would probably end up being wildly inaccurate. So I’m just going to leave it as a mystery for now. In my AU or whatever, the Mikado no Oni is trying to integrate demons into humans for the purpose of obtaining the Seraph of the End, but Kureto is simply not good enough for their needs, and he’s the only child they have to work with since all of their other experiments have failed miserably until this point. That is, until Mahiru is born. Many of the leading scientists in the organization were sure that the fetus wasn’t going to survive. The demons had driven her mother (one of their test subjects) insane. But Mahiru was a marvel of biology and magic as she had been genetically engineered as the Hiiragi family’s response to Kureto, down to the purple hair that she shared with her father in contrast to the dark hair of Kureto (yes, they really are that petty). The clan’s position on where Minori and Kureto stood was clear; they were outsiders to the Mikado no Oni.

But Minori pleaded for the life of her son, pointing out that with no precedents to be compared to, Mahiru was essentially an unpredictable bomb that could go off at any moment, and that it would be unwise to throw Kureto’s enormous potential away. After a long and heated discussion, the Elders decided to let Kureto live. However, they concluded that if Kureto could not outperform Mahiru, then their methods of producing children would be proved to be superior, and Minori would be dealt with since they had pretty much obtained all of the information they wanted from her. Of course, Tenri didn’t really care about whether or not Kureto’s life was spared. He was too busy plotting Mahiru’s role in the end of the world.

Well, maybe not too busy, because uh-oh spaghettios, Minori conceives another child with him. Although this pregnancy is more or less an accident, she hopes that this child will be powerful like Kureto to further prove her worth to the Hiiragi. Kureto is still a bit too young to fully understand the stakes (though in the ONS light novels, young children seem to possess an extremely high intelligence, but I’ll chalk that up to anime logic), but he is aware that something is wrong, especially when the preliminary testing of the unborn child does not produce good results. In fact, when the second child is born, only a handful of research staff is present because no one really cares. It’s clear that the second child has nowhere near the potential that his brother had. This child is Seishiro.

Realizing that this child does not have the inherent power Kureto does, Minori decides to shield him from as much of the experimentation as she can. She doesn’t want another child to go through what Kureto did. The Elders are more willing to let this slip by since Seishiro is fairly insignificant to them, especially since he couldn’t possibly be a contender for being the heir of the Hiiragi, and killing him would just be more trouble than he’s worth since they’re more focused on the competition between Kureto and Mahiru.

Time goes by, and although Seishiro is subjected to brutal training like his brother, the clan is still more concerned with Kureto and Mahiru. At this point, Kureto is now fully aware of what will happen if he fails. Not only does he train with instructors from the Mikado no Oni, but he also trains with his mother to learn more efficient techniques developed in China that involve crafting talismans and spells and the like. Minori is a brilliant woman, after all. (These times with his mother are perfect for fluff, like Minori encouraging Kureto to do this not for her sake, but for his own sake and stuff like that). But it’s still no match for Mahiru’s genius. Every day, Kureto works diligently to find some advantage he can have over Mahiru, sacrificing more and more and more of his own self for his vision of the Hiiragi clan’s future. It’s around this time in the AU that the Mikado no Oni were beginning to realize even the best plans they could develop to activate the Seraph of the End would result in Mahiru’s death. They needed to make another child like her to be the Hiiragi heir after she dies. Thus, work on creating the child that will be named Shinoa begins.

This is bad news for Minori, Kureto, and Seishiro. If Mikado no Oni can replicate their results with Mahiru without wasting too many resources (aka test subjects dying… yikes), then their position in the clan will once again be threatened. Kureto and Seishiro train even more vigorously for the next few months, but it’s no use. When the girl is born, preliminary testing produces findings that exceed the researchers’ wildest expectations. It’s so clear that the experiment was successful, disposing the child is not even considered, and she is given a name almost immediately. (The implication here is that the Hiiragis would not name the children born of these experiments until it was certain the infant had power and would survive.) This child is Shinoa.

In the months before Shinoa was born, Minori prepared a plan of escape with rebellious Mikado no Oni members whose daughters had been taken and killed in the organization’s experiments. It was a very simple plan that involved sneaking out of Japan in a small plane and flying to the USA. Illusion talismans could be used to great effect to slip in under the radar. In America, Minori could sell research information with one of the Western magic organizations there in exchange for shelter. Seeing as many of entities from Jewish/Christian religious traditions appear in Owari no Seraph (seraphs, Abaddon, etc.), I think Minori’s information would still be very appealing to magic organizations in America that would likely have a more Western magic foundation. (On a sidenote, I don’t know enough about Wicca to connect any elements of it to Owari no Seraph, but I imagine that in this world, it would have also influenced Western magic organizations.) The short-term plan would be to survive. The long-term plan would be to find a way to rebuild the Mikado no Oni from the bottom up.

So after hearing that the child was named so quickly, Minori realizes just how dire the situation is and immediately fetches Kureto and Seishiro from the Hiiragi estate with the help of the other members mentioned earlier. They only make it to the airfield before Tenri and Mahiru stop them with a squad of soldiers. After a tense confrontation, Minori attacks Tenri in the hopes that Kureto and Seishiro can escape in the ensuing flurry of activity. But Mahiru is hot on their trail, and Seishiro only manages to defend himself for a few seconds before she incapacitates him with a few slashes of her sword. Kureto puts up more of a fight. Predicting that an all-out fight with Mahiru would be coming soon, Kureto had been deliberately using less than his full strength in practice matches to trick her (an example might be staggering after blocking an attack even though he was actually capable of quickly counterattacking). But she had been deceiving him as well. Just as he was about to deliver a fatal blow, she dodged and (this next sentence might be a bit gory, be warned) stabbed him clean through the stomach. Her sword cut even deeper into his flesh as his body slid off the blade and landed on the ground. He was going to die.

But Minori, seeing that Kureto had been mortally wounded, quickly casted a healing spell to save his life rather than using that precious second to block an incoming blow from Tenri. She was struck down violently to the ground. (This might get gory again. And warning for angst tropes haha. Rip.) Little Seishiro, lying on the ground covered in blood and bruises, reached out desperately to his mother in her final moments, and just as their fingers were about to touch, Tenri decapitated her in one swift motion. Extremely traumatized and bleeding heavily, both Kureto and Seishiro lose consciousness.

With Minori dead and the two brothers captured alive, Tenri returns to the Mikado no Oni, impressed with Kureto’s strategy. He might be a worthy adversary for Mahiru (and potential successor?) after all. The plan is to keep things status quo for now, though after Minori’s death, Seishiro becomes increasingly difficult to work with. An indefinite amount of time passes, and a problem emerges. Soon after Tenri begins using Shinoa as a hostage for Mahiru, Shinoa’s performances on tests administered to her drop dramatically, below even those of Kureto (but still above Seishiro’s). It’s unclear to most researchers what’s going on, but Tenri correctly suspects that Mahiru has somehow interfered with the demon within Shinoa. Now, Kureto is a better candidate for leading the Mikado no Oni after Mahiru’s death, so Tenri becomes more involved in overseeing Kureto’s progress, and Shinoa is cast off to side, not unlike Seishiro.

However, there is something in this AU that will become important later - Mahiru and Shinoa had a separate demon entity bound within them. But Kureto and Seishiro were born from someone who had demon material within them. Therefore, in a sense, Kureto and Seishiro are demons, but it is a latent power that neither of them become aware of for a very long time. But the stronger their own demon power is, the less compatible with demon contracts they are, meaning that the reason why Seishiro is not a candidate for black-level demon augmentation is because is own demon nature is too powerful. Of course, everyone (including himself) thinks it’s because he’s weak. But he’s actually one of the most powerful. As I stated before, this will become important later on in the AU.

Haha wow, that was a lot. Tbh, there’s still a lot more, but that’s a general summary of the pre-ONS stuff. I know Kureto and Seishiro are controversial characters, but I think my full AU does a good job of showing a different perspective of their actions without trivializing the horrible stuff they’ve done. I want to address their flaws, but I also want to see them overcome them. I hope that makes sense! Hopefully, I’ll get around to writing the next part soon… Yeah… I think there are 3 parts total to this AU. Rip. I really hope I can one day find the endurance to make this into a fic.
