On the back of the book it says "at the dawn of the next world war" (on my copy, idk if other covers have it or don't) and LOTF was written in like 1954 or something, so after WW2, meaning WW3.

The boys don't know about the war, the "evacuation" probably being really quick and adults not telling children anything to avoid any panic.

Also the whole dogfight in the sky with the parachute guy and such just like.. it proves war I guess?

Also there was a headcanon that the only reason why the boys got rescued was because it was the end of the war, and there were searchers through our the world looking and writing down the damage of nuclear weapons (of course, at this point nuclear weapons would've already existed, but there's no doubt that new stronger more intense ones have been invented since) ((but that doesn't make sense since ears usually last years and I personally think that the boys were stranded for like nine months so ehhhhh, but maybe WW3 was just a short war-)

Also another headcanon that post-island Ralph knew about the war sooner than the other boys because of his dad, and his dad tries to share as much info as he can because he sees it as valuable lessons

I thought lord of the flies took place during WW2, but Piggy does mention an atomic bomb. SO, I wanna know what y’all think!

The opinions I’ve seen are:

WW2 is the war going on in the book

the war is WW2 but the atomic bomb hits Britain

it’s a separate fictional nuclear war

I personally think the war is WW2 and the atomic bomb Piggy hears about is just a rumor. Maybe it originated from some people finding out about Germany’s plans to build a nuke and the rumor got out of hand.

But, I want to see what other people think and if there’s any details I missed!
