Land of Trees and Chains

A garden world, lush with life, where trees of all shapes and sorts grow wild and strong. The world itself is less a forest and more an orchard, where consorts tend to the great trees in harmony with nature, cultivating everything they need to sustain themselves from the trees and protecting and preserving them in kind. The world is a relative paradise of peace and prosperity.

And yet, as the great trees reach up to the light of Skaia, something dark and chthonic, as unshakeable as death itself, stirs within the depths of the planet, entwined within the roots of the very world. Great chains of permafrost lurk in the deep, encircling around entire swaths of the world and ripping everything down into the darkness.

This is the Land of Trees and Chains. Welcome to LOTAC.

LOTAC is a relatively peaceful world when compared to the struggle and strife common across sessions of Sburb. What underlings lurk here are much like the great chains, mysterious and lurking in the sprawling caverns and root networks beneath the planet’s surface.

Underlings do not behave as they typically do on other lands as roving hordes of danger. Instead, they bloom, acting more as a rot or mold, organized in their aims and moving with alien purpose. The evergreen land of LOTAC has no method of decomposition. In ages past the underlings worked at night, unseen by the consorts, to break down and destroy fallen trees. With the coming of the great chains, this hidden work has progressed into coordinated attacks, raiding and plundering any tree unlucky enough to be bound by chains.

Operating as a strange sort of subterranean mycelial inspired pirates, the underlings have begun to terrorize villages and maim any consort attempting to stop their work. Daring explorer consorts have left their homes in hopes of reclaiming what was lost beneath the forest floor and, consorts not being the smartest, have begun to disappear, never to return.

Trees are felled by the score by the binding chains and the consorts are slowly being corralled into a dangerous, inhospitable part of the great forest. It will only be a matter of time until they are driven to the brink and can no longer survive. Without heroes, they will surely go extinct, crushed by the cruelty of nature.

But there is a hero. The Heir of Life.

The Heir of Life must venture across the grand orchards and forests, descend into the roots of the world, and uncover the source of the all consuming chains and the underling rot that follows their wake. Down into the deepest reaches of earth, long since left to fester. 

But perhaps with a little luck, new life may bloom.

Denizen: Demeter, Greek goddess of agriculture and the harvest, who's grieving brings forward cold and bitter winter.

Features

Arbolis Mundus, the World Tree

The largest tree on LOTAC, Arbolis Mundus is a massive tree whose roots encircle all of LOTAC and whose branches reach so high into the sky it slows and distorts the rotation of the planet. The World Tree is a magnificent mega tree made of thick, rich, dark wood and beautiful leaves that reach to every color in the spectrum like great panes of stained glass.

The elusive fruit of the World Tree is the subject of incredible legend. Ruby encrusted apples the size of a car, literally golden bananas, berries made of pure amethyst, and more. While the legends of their benefits are spurious at best, there is a truth to them. One gift, nestled among the highest boughs of Arbolis Mundus, is said to grant unimaginable power and authority over the planet.

Frost chains

Massive, heavy chains as dark as the void and as cold as the deepest winter. These chains, seemingly made out of some sort of petrified bark, crisscross under the soil of the land, only rising to the service when their snaking paths have wrapped around the deep roots of the trees in the world above.

Denizen lair

Deep towards the core of the planet the world grows increasingly cold, reaching well below freezing. Pockets of the cold earth are home to permafrost biomes, underground arctic climates with almost entirely frozen over life. Blades of grass become literal, becoming razor sharp with ice. Wind sends snow and icicles from trees as a rushing storm of deadly debris.

Hidden within the boreal parks and glades lies a structure made from frozen timbers, plain and sparsely adorned. Whispered in rumors and told about in storied legends, it is known as the Seed Vault. The Seed Vault is the home of the denizen Demeter, the source of the great cold and the chains that have wrapped around the land.

Within the Seed Vault is a host of seeds, seedlings, and saplings for every tree across LOTAC, up to and including, Arbolis Mundus itself. A massive, glowing seed pod, potent with pure potential. If one was to crack it open and peer inside they would find the quest bed of the Heir of Life.

The Seer is the class of passive understanding through and of their Aspect. Hope, meanwhile, is the Aspect of Beliefs, the Imagination and Idealism. It is commonly associated with religious imagery. Prospit dreamers are guided by the clouds of Skaia that pass over their moon, which show them visions of the past, present, and future. In the session, it represents defensee.

This all makes for... a very passive player. Worryingly so. Sburb would be an unwelcome shock to most people, but this Seer will experience it tenfold. Let's see how we can challenge them with some Quests.

the Land of Tremors and Canyons (LOTAC)

This planet has always been plagued with light earthquakes, though since the Denizen started moving about in the heart of the land, they've all moved to one side, causing deep rifts to form in the otherwise fairly uniform surface of LOTAC.

The consorts of this land are very keen on tradition, though, and have refused to move out of the danger zone for so long they've become stuck in the deep ravines that have resulted from the earthquakes, and have abanoned all Hope of getting out.

The Seer must find a way for them to move to safety, while making sure they have the will to follow them.

the Land of Snow and Angels (LOSAA)

LOSAA, uniquely, is inhabited by not only chipper amphibians, but also a fair amount of beings of pure light the locals call angels. Unfortunately, these two races are unable to communicate with each other, which has lead to a number of misunderstandings over the years.

Before now these clans have always found a way to resolve their issues somehow, but since the Denizen started egging their Strifes on with its mean-spirited whispers and malicious nudges, the conflict is close to becoming an all-out war.

The Seer must find a way to mediate between those two groups, and hopefully find a way for them to be able to communicate without their help, so that these petty fights stop happening altogether.

the Land of Philosophy and Probability (LOPAP)

The consorts of this planet are very keen on taking a nebulous approach to truth and logic.

They prefer to talk rather than do, and while they aren't primitive per say, they are rather behind in comparison to other planets' consorts because of their unwillingness to prove their hypotheses and base their observations on real world workings.

Instead they would rather continue to theorise about the possible, not prove the concrete. The Seer must resist getting swept along in this way of thinking, and instead use their knowledge to convince them to change their ways.

How do you think the whole Helion and LOTAC plot will resolve?

The optimistic side of me wants to say they fucking kill Beron, and she moves to Helions Court and they live happily ever after away from that shit-show of a court, but the realistic side of me thinks it will end tragically with either one of them dying.

I.    Player Count

Derse Seer of Light

Prospit Mage of Time

Prospit Maid of Heart

     Four players. This session will be exceptionally difficult, as you have a double aspect, which risks the death of one of the Light-bounds, and, because of the Heir’s inherited luck, it will most likely be the Seer. There’s also an imbalance in the dreamers. You also don’t have a Space player, which is essential for victory and the frog-breeding process, and you may need the Time player to go grimdark, who will be hard to control as an Heir of Space.

II.   Genesis Frog

     You don’t have a Space player, which is misfortunate. This means there won’t be any frog breeding station. I’ve assigned the Maid of Heart to at least have some kind of abandoned frog breeding station in their planet. The Mage will have to time-travel to acquire the frog breeding station when it was up and working, which will be an arduous task. And, if you manage to have the Mage player go grimdark, and have the Maid,  and or the Seer — as long as they’re also grimdark — control and aid them to fully complete the process, you may succeed. This will prove to be extremely laborious though and will most probably lead to failure. Do prepare the Mage for emotional abuse.      Other than that, you’re going to need someone to help and protect the grimdark Mage, and since there isn’t another Time player, who is most suitable for the job, the Maid of Heart is the second best pick.

III.  Scratch

     You have a Time player, and a Mage thereof at that! They’re the perfect class for causing the Scratch; however, make sure they don’t get harmed by their aspect. I’d recommend either the Seer or Maid to make sure they’re safe.

IV.   The Black King

Offense: Maid of Heart.

Defense: Heir of Light, Mage of Time.

Support: Seer of Light.

     Due to this being a small session, there will be some hindrances in battling the Black King. 

          The Maid here is a bit of an omniclass. There is absolutely no chance they’d be able to battle the King using physical hits, they could simply guilt him into not wanting to fight anymore, or, rather, convince him into suicide, which too far of a stretch, and could lead them to go lightbright. Yet, it is still possible.                If the Maid ever went grimdark, they’d be a Bard of Mind. They… would be a gigantesque obstacle for their team if they ever became grimdark. Causing everyone around them to literally go insane, including the King, which will most likely amplify his hits. That’s simply no good. As a Seer, I think I can safely say that if the Maid ever went grimdark, especially early on in the game, and kept alive, there won’t be a single chance of victory, or even survival for the other members of the team. My advice is to keep them stable and connected to their classpect.

          The Heir could deal physical damage — blinding the King, using light as a physical blade to drive through him, lasers, start fires, etcetera. The reason I put them in the Defense category is because Heirs are generally passive. Unlike Maids, they don’t go out of their way to fight and such.                As grimdark, they would be Mage of Void. Which… is quite the joker card. It could either turn out extremely well, or extremely bad. They would have contact with the Horrorterrors, which are powerful allies to have in fighting the Black King. However, throughout the entire comic, we have no idea what their true intentions are. An omniscient character implied that their goals are impure in canon but they have a tendency to deceive and lie. Grimdarkness is a very dangerous path to go down.

          The Mage would start off as a Support class, but as they learn about their aspect and full potential more and more, they’d start to feel more comfortable in using their aspect against enemies and as an defensive ability. Although, their ability is very limited, given that they’re a Mage. They could use spells to slow or speed down time, causing the King to not deal as many hits in a specified amount of time, giving the team more time to fight and deal hits.                If they ever go down the path of grimdarkness, they’d be a Heir of Space. That sure is a powerful classpect. Being able to shapeshift to a colossal size and literally step on the King, or having the ability of intense teleportation which will definitely be disorienting for him — an extremely good opponent. They would have Space at their fingertips. Size, speed, placement; these are all things they’d be able to manipulate in themself only.

          The Seer is the strategist, and will help the others with their analytical findings and schemes. They have zero chance to fight in this scenario. They simply must aid the others and help them.                However, their grimdark self is possibly the most powerful one out of all of the aforementioned. A Witch of Void. Unlike the Heir’s grimdark, instead of being able to persuade the Horrorterrors, a Witch would be able to manipulate them fully. Having the eldritch gods as servants for them — the Black King would stand no chance.

     Overall, if not a single member of the team goes grimdark, there is no way the team could win against the Black King. I personally recommend the Mage and Seer to go grimdark, while keeping the Maid and Heir as stable as possible. Another recommendation is to give the Maid the role of maintaining the Mage and Seer’s stability as people tend to go unstable when they’ve undergone grimdarkness.

V.    Relations

     This is a fairly unproblematic session. As long as the Maid maintains the bonds between everyone, everything will be alright.

VII.  Conclusion

     The odds are not in your favour. This is an exceptionally difficult session to win — here’s why:

No Space player, which means you’ll have to force the Mage to go grimdark. And helping them stay on track will be difficult as they’d be able to teleport and amplify their speed.

The Maid has many jobs in the team; helping everyone stay together, making sure the frog breeding process goes well, maintaining the Mage and Seer’s stability in the fight with the Black King, while also trying not to go insane.

The duplicate issue. The Seer has a high probability of dying, and may be the only sure way to win fighting the Black King and to help the Mage to go grimdark by manipulating the Horrorterrors. Keep them alive at all costs, or else you’re going to have to beg for Lady Luck’s blessing.

The smallest session possible. It’s very difficult to win with these circumstances.

Unbalanced dreamers — the Prospit dreamers are in danger of death, and it sure isn’t going to be the Heir because of their luck.

As a Seer of Light, I’d say there’s around a 5% percent chance of winning.
