In Which I am Corrected

Happy Thursday!

I’m glad you made it this far, I assume anyways. I know this week has been very hectic for you, but at least it’s almost over. Also those essays you wrote were great, written like a true scholar. You should be proud of the fact that you just wrote an essay about Monty Python and the Holy Grail in all seriousness. Still, I know it’s hard, but remember that what you are working towards is no easy task. Also the great thing about this time of year is that it’s almost the end of the semester! Then you will be home for the summer, and I’ll bet after a while you’ll be wishing you were right back at school with your squad - my point being, try to enjoy every moment while you can even though you might have a lot of work looming over your head. 

As you know, I went home for Easter this past weekend and that was very nice. There’s just a familiar feeling associated with home, and it was good to feel that again, especially since I won’t be home for an extended stay until July. Seeing everyone who was home was great too, it’s just different already. Where we used to share stories in common settings with people that we knew, now we are all telling our own stories with our own settings and characters - and I think I’m OK with that. It sounds like all my friends are having a good freshman year and for that I am happy. The weekend went quick, though, and I was back here Sunday night. And that’s when things went south for me. Here are the facts - classes were fine and good, I met with the CGT adviser and turned in the paperwork to change my major, had my last volunteer visit with the chidlers, I played quite a bit of Battlefront with Gabe between Monday and Tuesday, had a good time at Swing on Wednesday learning more Charleston, and got completely drenched in a monsoon today. After Sunday night something inside me just fell over and shattered because I just felt hollow during the beginning of the week. Despondence was my middle name. It was all around a terrible time to be me. However, after talking with Lyss and Rach, I have been corrected. I ultimately determined that I was worrying about every aspect of my future and affirmed that my greatest fear is fear of the unknown. Anyways, they made me realize that I was worrying about things I had no business worrying about at this stage of my life. Rachel had a lot of good things to say, for instance, of the things that worry one in one’s lifetime, those things can be classified as either short term or long term, and controllable or uncontrollable. When all the things I was worrying about were apparently long term and uncontrollable, that solved that. So here is a friendly reminder to you to take life one day at a time, don’t think too much, and don’t take life too seriously. 

Now to keep taking things seriously despite my advice. I think your thoughts about sacrifice are interesting and couldn’t agree more with the fact that sacrifice should be deeply personal and significant, not sacrificing a surplus like you said. I will try to keep those things in mind when I am making sacrifices. Moving on to your question about what I am lacking, I’m sure I could complain for a while about the things I wish I had, but don’t. Instead I think I will focus on one thing - the big thing - I think that I am without right now - friends. Wow that sounds really depressing, but in the sense of what I mean, I suppose it is very sad. Back home I was surrounded by the best damn support group in the universe - all of you wonderful people. And then I had to say goodbye and let you all go and do your own things without me. First semester was hard for me for all sorts of reasons and at the end of the year I realized I had just missed the critical period of college friendships. First semester is when nobody knows anybody, meaning it is easier for people to meet and become friends. I haven’t lost all hope because I know I can still make friends later, but I just feel a bit behind in the friend department. When I stop and consider things, I have my DJ-bot, and Sid and Gabe as the other people I normally hang out with, and Rachel of course. It’s just that I’m not as close to them as I was to you or Lyss, so it feels like I’m trying to grow back limbs or something so I can function again. I think I’m a person who relies on his friends more than I knew when they were right in front of me. Reading about your escapades in the wee hours of the morning made me crave experiences like that, I just don’t have a group I can go out and do stuff like that with. So looking ahead I hope I can find some of those awesome college friendships people are always talking about haha. 

One last little tidbit to throw some comedy into this post relates to my haircut. I didn’t really tell anyone at Purdue about my hair, so I’ve just been running into them and admiring their reactions. I like when people say my hair “is gone” so I pretend like it’s lost and ask if they’ve seen it or if they’ve seen the posters I’ve put up around campus offering a reward. No one laughs. Also when Gabe was talking about my haircut at dinner he said I looked like a prisoner, which sparked prison nicknames for myself, Gabe, and DJ - known on our cell block as Switchblade, G-String, and Butch, respectively. Maybe you’ve seen us out in the yard lifting weights? Anyways, my recommendation for the week is to not have fear of “big” changes like drastic haircuts, because as we both agree: change is good. Also this whole prison joke just made me realize there is some double meaning to my title now.
