Barbarella will be released on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on November 28 via Arrow Video. Tula Lotay designed the new cover art for the 1968 science fiction cult classic; the original poster is on the reverse side.

Roger Vadim (Into the Night) directs from a script he co-wrote with Terry Southern (Dr. Strangelove, Easy Rider), based on the French comic series by Jean-Claude Forest. Jane Fonda stars with John Phillip Law, Marcel Marceau, David Hemmings, and Ugo Tognazzi.

Apple Music

Am i the only one in a 10 kilometer radius here that enjoys their music with Apple Music instead of Spotify? To me, it's okay if other people use Spotify. I don't really care, really. But it does sometimes spark my curiosity why some of the most into-audio users are still not thinking about switching because of the enormous amount of Lossless and/or Dolby Atmos mixed content.

In my opinion, I can't bare switching back to Spotify because of the absolute difference in audio quality and how it immerses you in good music.

There is no reason for video games to have compressed audio anymore. Period.

The soundtrack on Apple Music with lossless support should not sound better than the in game music.

Like what’s even more annoying is games that support Dolby Atmos using audio sources that were compressed prior to the Atmos mixing.

Also like, all media in general, including streaming formats, should all have a completely uncompressed option. If you don’t have the bandwidth for it that’s fine, but if you do you should be able to stream blu-ray quality movies and TV from streaming services.

In this blog post, we will take a deep dive into some of the most commonly used audio codecs over the years - right from av cad drawings MP3 that made portable music players a mass market success in the late 90s to state-of-the-art object-based audio formats like Dolby Atmos being used in theaters. We will understand how these codecs work under the hood to compress audio data while maintaining reasonable quality. So let's get started!

Lossy vs Lossless Codecs

All digital audio codecs can primarily be categorized into two types - lossy and lossless. Lossy codecs use audio compression techniques that can discard certain parts of the audio information to achieve much smaller file sizes compared to the original uncompressed audio. This results in some loss of audio quality. However, lossy codecs allow for much more efficient storage and transmission of audio.

On the other hand, lossless codecs use compression techniques that do not discard any audio information. They only exploit redundancies in the digital representation of the audio to reduce its size without degrading the audio quality. However, the compression ratios achieved via lossless encoding are much lower compared to lossy codecs.

Some common lossy audio codecs are MP3, AAC, Vorbis, Opus etc. Whereas lossless codecs include FLAC, ALAC, WAV and AIFF. Let's explore some of these codecs in detail:

MP3 - The Dominant Lossy Codec

No discussion about audio codecs is complete without talking about MP3. Introduced in the early 1990s, MP3 (MPEG-1 Layer 3) became the de facto standard for digital music distribution over the Internet in the late 90s and revolutionized the portable music industry.

MP3 works by discarding audio data that is deemed irrelevant for human hearing. It uses psychoacoustic models to eliminate parts of the audio that are considered inaudible to humans. This allows it to achieve excellent compression ratios around 10:1 without significant quality loss at typical bitrates of 128-320 kbps.

At its peak in the 2000s, MP3s were the most common format for buying, sharing and listening to music online or on portable MP3 players. Billions of songs were traded over peer-to-peer networks using the MP3 format. Even today, older devices and formats often support only MP3 playback.

However, its open standard also meant proliferation of low-quality MP3 rips and fakes. Its fixed bitrate also meant inefficient compression of non-music audio like podcasts. Newer more advanced lossy codecs were developed to address MP3 limitations.

AAC - Designed for Mobiles and Internet

Advanced Audio Coding or AAC was developed in the late 1990s as a successor to MP3. It uses more advanced audio compression techniques like transient coding and joint stereo to achieve better quality at lower bitrates compared to MP3.

AAC became dominant on the newly emerging mobile devices and portable media players in the 2000s thanks to its efficient compression. It could support variable bitrates which allowed for more efficient streaming applications over the internet compared to fixed bitrate MP3.

AAC is now the most common audio codec for iTunes music purchases, YouTube videos, and streaming music services like Spotify and Apple Music. It has near universal hardware and software support across devices. Newer versions like HE-AAC and HE-AAC v2 provide even better quality and efficiency.

AAC largely replaced MP3 as the preferred format for digital music distribution over the last decade because of its better quality, efficiency, and performance on mobile devices and over bandwidth-limited internet connections.

Other Lossy Codecs - Vorbis, Opus

Two other open-source lossy audio codecs that deserve a mention are Vorbis and its successor Opus:

Vorbis was developed in 2002 as an open and freely licensed alternative to patents-encumbered codecs like MP3 and AAC. It provided high quality audio at low bitrates and found adoption in open formats like OGG.

Opus was developed later in 2012 by the same authors as a successor to Vorbis. It unifies Vorbis' support for music with Speex' support for voice. Opus delivers perceptually superior quality even at ultra-low bitrates of 6kbps. It has wide industry support and is the mandated audio format for HTML5 web video.

Both Vorbis and more so Opus aim to provide completely open and unencumbered high quality compression of both music and speech while having flexible bitrate and latency controls. They demonstrate that open standards can often surpass proprietary formats on both objective and subjective quality metrics.

Lossless Formats - FLAC, ALAC, WAV/AIFF

Among lossless audio formats, FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) has emerged as the most popular open standard with widespread industry support. It achieves compression ratios of around 50-60% by removing redundant data from uncompressed audio streams without any loss in quality.

Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) is Apple's own lossless compression format used for iTunes Store music and Apple Music. It provides slightly better compression than FLAC with almost identical audio quality.

Uncompressed PCM audio formats like WAV and AIFF provide CD quality lossless playback but without any compression. They are used often for mastering, studio, and archival applications where pristine audio quality is paramount.

Lossless formats allow for perfect reproduction of the original audio while saving storage space compared to uncompressed formats. They are preferred by audiophiles, musicians and specialists who value replicating the original recording without any quality loss.

Multi-Channel Formats - Dolby Digital, DTS

In the world of home theaters and movies, Dolby Digital and DTS emerged as the dominant lossy multi-channel surround sound formats in the 1990s and 2000s.

The Toshiba 43UF3D offers a tempting marriage of hardware and software, with a low-cost Toshiba display that runs Amazon’s widespread Fire TV platform. This is the first time Toshiba has shipped screens with the Fire TV OS in the UK, offering an upgrade from the Toshiba Smart Portal. The UF3D launched at £349 for a 43-inch size, though it’s as cheap as £279 at Amazon – and the remaining 50-inch, 55-inch and 65-inch sizes retailing for £329, £369 and £449 respectively at the time of review. For anyone who’s used a Fire TV or Fire TV streaming stick before, you’ll be right at home – though even this budget television has a few smart features up its sleeve you might not expect at this price range.  I’ve seen some contradictory specifications for this TV out there at different retailers, but be assured that we’ve got the correct details, direct from Toshiba, all in this review.

The size and weight of this 43-inch screen really doesn’t require a central stand, yet Toshiba has opted for a rectangular grey stand to keep things stable. It takes up a little more counter space than a regular pair of feet, then – 24.9cm deep, rather than the screen’s tighter 8.1cm depth – and nor does it lift the screen high above the ground for those looking to attach a soundbar to this screen.

It can be a bit of an eyesore, whether the TV is turned off (red) or on (green).

The Alexa Voice Remote is also a joy, featuring a voice control button that you hold down in order to summon the Alexa assistant. While you don’t get ‘hands-free’ voice control, per se, it’s an intuitive and privacy-safe way to make use of voice commands – and a better solution than Toshiba Connect, a plug-in Alexa mic the company previously trialled in a few TV models.

- Decent brightness for the price - Limited contrast - Dolby Vision HDR supportThe Toshiba 43UF3D doesn’t have too much to work with, given its price – this is a pretty basic LED panel, with a 50Hz frame rate, that does what it can with the parts given to it. The direct backlight certainly helps matters, allowing for a reasonably consistent brightness output compared to what a cheaper edge-lit system would be capable of. I found that peak brightness is generally set around 380 nits for most picture modes but can jump up to 460 nits on Vivid – you’ll be sacrificing a little tonal accuracy, but the option is there if what you really want is a brighter screen.

Image Credit (Trusted Reviews)Toshiba’s TRU Micro Dimming allows for a little brightness variation across the screen, and the tests I carried out showed that the UF3D has pretty good colour accuracy across the board – though no doubt a more advanced local dimming feature would have helped deepen black tones, which often show up as grey.  But to the eye, the lack of contrast stops any colours popping on their own – and tones can seem to blend a little together. When watching the latest season of Stranger Things, the pale skin of a child actor and the clinical hospital walls almost seem to merge into the same sickly colour.

One notable feature is Dolby Vision – a dynamic HDR format supported by Netflix and often found on 4K Blu-rays, which uses additional metadata to tweak your TV’s brightness and colour output. You won’t be getting a high-end HDR experience with the 43UF3D’s panel and lighting array, but Dolby Vision support will improve the tone mapping of compatible content to get a little closer to the filmmaker’s intent.

Sound Quality
