The first time I ran into another me out there, it wasn't pretty. This was still in the first few days after the Shattering, before we'd figured out just how Infinite the Infinite Cities were.
It was the first time I'd stumbled into one of the truly dangerous realities. This particular version of Los Angeles had fallen victim to some sort of mutagenic plague- former people stalked the streets, twisted into monstrous forms, and aggressive to any outsiders.
(Don't fear, dear reader- that LA and most like it have been safely quarantined. Pay attention to warning sings while you're venturing through realities, and you'll be just fine. Unless you're brave enough to venture into the unmapped frontiers- then all bets are off.)
When it happened, I was already rather on edge, having had a close call with one of the inhabitants, lost track of the rift I'd come through, and taken shelter in some sort of old bunker. So when the door of my refuge opened and I saw myself looking in, I...
I'm not going to lie to you, dear reader. I panicked.
I threw myself at my doppelgänger, and we exchanged a few blows, but the other Thunder's cooler head prevailed over my panicked flailing. They pinned me to the ground and covered my mouth, and I'm thankful they did- one of the monsters might have heard my screaming if it had gone on for much longer.
After I calmed down, the two of us got to talking, and it turned out that we had a lot in common. Who could have guessed? Like me, they'd been living an uneventful life, and after the Shattering, they'd ventured out into the unknown for reasons they couldn't quite explain. We made a plan- we'd shelter here together for the night, then find a way out of this LA in the morning.
Then when I woke up, they were gone- along with my wallet and most of my spare clothes.
So that's the first lesson about Parallels- while you may have much in common, they're still their own person in the end.

just taking some silly notes on gayepo world building 🦞
i did my usual reread of gather ye power and just wanted to talk about this little black starburst thingy that first appears in the mural area
so obv this is the little egg chamber -- we dont know much abt the initial construction but we can see that its furnished with these hour glass statues, the one on the left displaying the starburst symbol
the same symbol appears on this old king/emperor and their knights, and gets repeated throughout in the buildings in ye old yazon [unless it had a different name] at tha time]
and the structures were maintained through time, up to the newest yazonian reign
at this point we know that yazon had magi working for royalty, perhaps even running yazon themselves, maybe even living there and chilling -- but based on the egg temple location, how much territory does yazon hold?
when talking about his backstory, enrico describes yazon as the land in the east, implying that he and cube and Not in the east, so does yazon just have temples and territories throughout banta? if so how did that effect where the magi live from 300 years ago to now? in terms of the war, would yazon outnumber tradegie due to its geographical presence -- does yazon have allies? does yazon need allies?

There's something you need to understand about the concept of infinity. "Infinite possibilities" does not mean "every possibility."
Let's do some quick math. Hold on now, dont close the book, this wont be long. Look at it this way- accounting for decimals, how many numbers are there between 1 and 2? You've got 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, all the way to 1.9. Then there's 1.01, 1.02, etc. Then 1.001, and 1.0001 and so on- if you keep adding decimal places without limit, it's plain to see that there's an infinite amount of numbers between 1 and 2.
But none of those numbers are 3. Or 4. Or 2.1, or negative 0.001. There's an infinite set of numbers that aren't in between 1 and 2. In fact, it's bigger infinite than the previous one.
Alright, the math is done, you can stop holding your breath now.
The same principle applies to the Infinite Cities. There's an endless amount of parallel reflections of the Los Angeli to explore, infinite places, infinite peoples, infinite wonders- but not every possibility exists out there.
A friend of mine learned this the hard way. They'd made some mistakes in their past. Some things they weren't proud of. They thought the Infinite Cities might be their way out of it- that somewhere out there, there must be a reality where they'd never signed that contract, where they'd hit the brakes sooner, where I'd actually had the courage to say "I love you." My friend never found it, and the search nearly destroyed them.
That's something important to remember. If you decide to venture out into the unknown, do so for the joy of discovery and exploration. Not because you're looking for something.
