Israeli Strike on Refaat al-Areer Apparently Deliberate Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor December 8, 2023 The Israeli airstrike that killed Prof. Refaat al-Areer was apparently deliberate, Euro-Med Monitor concluded on Friday. The apartment where Refaat and his family were sheltering was surgically bombed out of the entire building where it’s located, according to corroborated eyewitness and family accounts. This came after weeks of death threats that Refaat received online and by phone from Israeli accounts. We call for an immediate investigation into this apparently deliberate and targeted killing of a prominent Palestinian academic, writer, poet, and activist. On Wednesday at around 18:00, Refaat al-Areer was killed in his sister’s home in al-Sidra neighborhood in al-Daraj area in Gaza city along with his brother Salah and one of his children (Mohammed); his sister Asmaa and three of her children (Alaa, Yahia, and Mohammed); and a neighbor. His brother’s wife, Alaa, and two other children, Rafik and Alma, were wounded in the assault. The airstrike surgically targeted the apartment on the second floor where Rafaat was in a 3-storey building, and not the entire building; indicating the apartment was the target and not possible collateral damage. Refaat was displaced multiple times during this war and ended up at his sister’s home along with his parents, wife and children. A few days ago, Refaat moved with his wife and children to an UNRWA school in al-Tufah neighborhood in Gaza according to his family. However, a close friend of Refaat’s told Euro-Med Monitor that he had received an anonymous phone call from someone who identified himself as an Israeli officer and threatened Refaat that they knew precisely the school where he was located and were about to get to his location with the advancement of Israeli ground troops. While the credibility of the threat itself is unclear, it contributed to prompting Refaat to move back to his sister’s apartment, believing it was more concealed than an open and overcrowded school where it would have been difficult to hide. For weeks since the start of this war, Refaat has been receiving numerous death threats and hateful messages from Israeli accounts on social media after prominent public figures singled him out for harassment and incitement. In 2014, Israel bombed Refaat’s home in Shejaiya and killed over 30 of his and his wife’s families.

Bill Orcutt asked as his guitar quartet tuned their Telecasters and Jazzmasters for sound check. A wild deconstructionist whose catalog spans a splatter of hardcore punk, noise and electronic music, Orcutt has written and improvised on four-stringed guitars for four decades, culminating in the ecstatic minimalism of last year's Music for Four Guitars, each part played and dubbed over by himself. At the Tiny Desk, however, Orcutt brought along a who's who of forward-thinking guitarists to perform these rowdy, giddy and shreddy pieces: Wendy Eisenberg, Ava Mendoza and Shane Parish, who transcribed the original recordings. From a frenzied hoedown ("Or from behind") and feedback-humming drone-pop ("In the rain") to something resembling Henry Cow playing Norwegian black metal ("In profile") and paradoxically Brutalist complexity ("Or head on"), each song is a short burst of finger-flicked frenzy. Alle ore 10 sono stabiliti i funerali del compagno Francesco Lorusso. L’ordinanza del prefetto che vietava ogni tipo di manifestazione nel centro storico, ha impedito l’allestimento di una camera ardente nel centro della città; il funerale si é tenuto alla periferia della città in Piazza della Pace. Per quanto riguarda i partiti: il PCI non ha aderito ufficialmente, il PSI ha mandato una delegazione. Da notare che il sindacato ha indetto un’ora di sciopero con assemblee in fabbrica, proprio in coincidenza con l’orario del funerale… Gli studenti hanno inviato delegazioni nelle più grosse fabbriche, per spiegare l’accaduto e richiedere un prolungamento dello sciopero. Nonostante tutto vi é stata una forte partecipazione da parte di operai, cittadini e studenti. Al tentativo di isolamento del funerale, si é sommato lo sciopero dell’ATC, che ha di fatto impedito la partecipazione di molte persone. Nel pomeriggio gli studenti si sono riuniti al quartiere San Donato per tenere un’assemblea che poi è stata impedita dalla polizia la quale, dopo aver bloccato il ponte, ha circondato il quartiere. Gli studenti allora si sono divisi in delegazioni per fare interventi nelle fabbriche; venivano intanto accuratamente seguiti da elicotteri della polizia. I pullman che andavano verso il centro sono stati fermati dalla polizia che ha fatto scendere con i mitra spianati gli studenti, perquisendoli e fermando chi era senza documenti o in possesso di limoni. Al termine delle assemblee nelle fabbriche, gli studenti si sono riuniti al cinema Minerva per valutarne i risultati: si é notato un grado notevole di disinformazione tra gli operai su quanto era avvenuto nei giorni precedenti. In assemblea si é inoltre deciso di mandare una delegazione alle Aldini per chiedere agli studenti l’utilizzazione di tre aule come luogo di riaggregazione del movimento”. Al mattino ci si doveva vedere, come al solito, in Piazza Verdi, verso le dieci. Noi non saremmo andati ma é anche difficile spiegare il perché. Eravamo forse stanchi, forse avevamo solo voglia di stare insieme. Certamente non sentivamo sensi di colpa e non eravamo piú “indispensabili”, cioé quasi inutili. Quando ci si ritiene indispensabili, in politica, specialmente quando é vero che lo si é, vuol dire che si lavora al posto di troppi altri che a loro volta non sono affatto indispensabili. Ma ci eravamo ritrovati in quattro o cinque, passando di casa in casa, non certo per dirci queste cose. E non ricordo neppure quello che ci siamo detti. Ci siamo tirati degli Optiladon sulla testa, abbiamo fumato, io ho rinunciato a pisciare in camera di Pino perché pensavo fosse un cesso occupato, Paolo e Ivo giocavano ai pesi e alla bilancia, G.B. sbriciava un libro. Cosí fino a giorno, con le mascelle indolenzite e con un grande sonno. Due scompaiono in qualche camera, dove Paola e chissá chi altro dormivano gi dalla sera, G.B. crolla completamente vestito, io metto i calzini fuori dalla finestra e mi butto su un lettino in cucina. Abbiamo dormito poco. La voce spaventata di Paola sembra a tutti un sogno: fuori piove. – Francesco chi? Lorusso? – Gli hanno sparato alla schiena, non parlava piú, gli usciva il sangue dalla bocca. Sono stati i carabinieri. – Quei bastardi… – Hanno detto di chiamarvi. State attenti, qui fuori c’é una 127 piena. – Usciamo un po’ alla volta in fretta. Datemi dei calzini, i miei sono tutti bagnati. Mentre si va all’universitá penso alla discussione avuta con Francesco sul servizio d’ordine, che non era mai stato un problema sapere chi aveva ragione. Ogni tanto lo vedo su una carrozzella e allora scuoto la testa e dico che sono scemo. Me lo ricordo sudato, con la camicia bagnata e lo spolverino aperto, che si scappava via insieme. In via Zamboni ci sono barricate che si susseguono una all’altra, tutte lucide di pioggia; riconosco i tavoli della mensa, le panche di Lettere, i vasi di fiori di Piazza Scaravilli. Piazza Verdi é un’istantanea terribile che mi spaventa e nello stesso momento mi inghiotte, e non penso piú, vado avanti sbattendo ogni tanto contro qualcuno, senza salutare nessuno, senza che nessuno mi fermi. Ci sono centinaia di compagni, di studenti, tutti muti, con i capelli bagnati. Qualcuno allinea, facendole tintinnare, decine di bottiglie vuote di diverse dimensioni che vengono riempite di benzina travasata da un enorme contenitore della mensa. Ogni tanto ci si lamenta che il nastro sta per finire, che bisogna andare a prendere altri antivento. Francesco é morto, e dalle facce si capisce che tutti lo sanno. Si vedono occhi arrossati ovunque, uno piange da solo davanti a un muro, alcuni vanno avanti e indietro per la piazza, come se cercassero di parlare, ma non ce n’é bisogno. Tutti pensano la stessa cosa. Nel CPS ci sono compagni buttati sulle sedie, che piangono e si guardono in faccia. Dopo un po’ entra Matteo, quasi sorretto da Paola e da Fernanda che, staccatasi un attimo, mi abbraccia piangendo e mi fa delle domande che non capisco. Matteo non sembra neanche vivo, é pallido, ha la bocca socchiusa. Muove solo gli occhi che in un attimo mi chiedono un sacco di cose. Arrivano altri compagni e, non so come, si inizia a parlare, in fretta, con una durezza che non so descrivere. Ogni tanto si sente qualcuno che singhiozza. Nessuno fa grandi discorsi, gli obiettivi sono chiari, un compagno inizia a strappare una bandiera per ricavarne dei fazzoletti. In piazza incontro G.B. che si aggira con un sorriso nervoso in faccia e mi dice che non riesce a fare altro. Vicino a Lettere, un compagno mi ricorda senza cattiveria che avevo quasi litigato con Francesco, un altro mi dice che é stato attaccato un commissariato lí vicino. Nell’aula bianca ci sono altri che discutono nervosamente. E’ chiaro che vogliamo andare in centro, che vogliamo passare per la Democrazia Cristiana, ma penso che la gente che si sta ammucchiando per via Zamboni non ha bisogno di un tracciato da seguire. Il corteo si ferma poco dopo e si iniziano a sentire i primi slogan: in testa gridano “guai guai guai a chi ci tocca”. Io sto in coda con un centinaio di compagni dei vari SdO dell’universitá. Ma in mezzo non c’é un corteo da difendere. Passano migliaia di compagni con le tasche piene di sampietrini, tra le file girano sacchetti di bottiglie. E’ un corteo diverso da quelli fatti solo pochi giorni prima, anche se le facce sono le stesse; il mucchio mobile, festante, che invade i marciapiedi tra le borse della spesa, che invita a parlare con l’ironia e crea un rapporto con tutti. Non é il serpentone che partiva a mezzanotte per tirare giú dal letto quelli che erano abituati ai riti ordinati delle manifestazioni. Sembrava che nessuno volesse tornare a “casa” neanche per un attimo. I compagni sfilano nei cordoni senza cantare, con una disciplina non guidata. Ma il salto, la differenziazione, non é avvenuto di lato alla voglia di essere soggetti non astratti delle proprie lotte, dei propri movimenti. Ora i sassi, le bottiglie, le barricate, sono di tutti, non c’é niente di nascosto. La retorica commemorativa non percorre neppure per un attimo i gruppi delle facoltá, delle scuole. L’attacco é contro tutti. Ucciso un compagno, non hanno militarizzato piccoli gruppi, ma hanno dato a tutti la responsabilitá di difendersi e di capire. L’attacco che si prepara é passato attraverso un dibattito politico ancora vacillante, una ricerca promossa dalle case dei compagni, dalle esperienze collettive che avevano ricondotto capillarmente al posto giusto le parole e la critica. La critica é viva e manifesta; la ricomposizione si manifesta cristallina nella agitazione delle piazze e delle strade e la violenza cresce dentro in un’opposizione radicale simultaneamente pedagogica e non separata. Questa sensazione l’avevo giá avuta ai cortei del collettivo Jacquerie, nel mio cordone di amici, compagni presenti ora allo stesso modo. La vendetta non puó piú essere fatta di epicitá isolata, ma di assimilazione e di coscienza, di amore e di ricerca di amore. Mi viene da pensare ai funzionari di partito, ai giocolieri prezzolati delle parole, ai cadaveri ammuffiti degli insegnanti democratici. La linea di demarcazione é diventata un fossato: tra il cinismo della cultura ufficiale che é l’arroganza del potere, e la forza della vita e delle contraddizioni reali che si agitano e si compongono su mille fronti.  Nessuna strada contiene interamente il corteo: quasi per guardarci meglio giriamo per Piazza Maggiore che non basta per farci vedere tutte le facce nascoste dai fazzoletti e dai passamontagna. A fianco delle lapidi una cinquantina di militanti del PCI che sembrano quasi veri. Ogni loro provocazione é inutile: non esistono nemmeno. Non piove piú. Alla gente che forse spaventata, intontita, se ne sta ammucchiata sui marciapiedi si grida insieme “gente gente gente non state lí a guardare – abbiamo un compagno da vendicare”. Quando la coda sta per entrare in via Ugo Bassi, da via Marconi si sentono le prime detonazioni,e in pochi secondi la strada si riempie di rumori, di richiami e il fumo si spande per centinaia di metri. I frammenti del corteo diventano macchie nere che si spostano evitando i candelotti che girano sull’asfalto e i fuochi delle bottiglie lanciate. Ci gridano che la polizia si sta spostando dalla Questura temiamo di essere imbottigliati. A dividerci c’é subito uno sbarramento di fiamme, ma non si puó piú stare lí, c’é tanto di quel fumo che non ci riconosciamo tra di noi. Io e Gigi, che siamo restati indietro crediamo di non farcela a raggiungere gli altri che scappano verso via Indipendenza. Non vediamo assolutamente nulla, ci viene da vomitare, seguiamo la voce di Andrea che grida di aver trovato aria fresca. Lungo via Indipendenza ci ritroviamo in un centinaio, con le idee poco chiare sul dove andare. Il piccolo gruppo si stira come un elastico in una direzione o in un’altra. Ma tutti abbiamo la sensazione che in tutta la cittá, in tutto il centro, molti gruppi si muovono come il nostro. Non riusciamo a capire se abbiamo vinto, se abbiamo perso, ma nessuno si sente né vinto né vincitore: sappiamo che non é finita cosí. All’universitá incrociamo un piccolo spezzone di corteo e aspettiamo insieme notizie dai compagni che girano in bicicletta. Molte notizie arrivano confuse, qualcuno si é provato a seguire le tracce degli scontri, una scia di vetri rotti, frammenti di bottiglie, alettoni di candelotti lacrimogeni. Alla stazione ci sono degli scontri, molti compagni sono chiusi dentro. Si riparte subito, quasi di corsa. Alla stazione ci sono molti autobus di traverso, un sacco di fumo, non si sa da che parte andare. Gruppi di carabinieri e poliziotti si spostano velocemente sotto i portici, verso le due uscite. Ma i colpi che subito si sentono non sono dei candelotti. Ci sparano addosso con i moschetti, in tutta la piazza esplodono numerose bottiglie, si libera un’uscita. Io e altri due o tre ci mettiamo a gridare di buttarsi per terra, di strisciare verso le colonne. Uno studente, fuggito dalla stazione ha una crisi isterica: piange, tossisce, racconta che gli hanno sparato addosso con un mitra. Dal fumo, reso piú spesso dai fari della stazione, si vede uscire piegato sulla bicicletta Maurizio, che agitando un braccio grida a chissá chi di non sparare. Un altro compagno in bicicletta si butta per terra sotto le schegge di muro sollevate da un colpo di moschetto. Torniamo all’universitá solo quando siamo certi che tutti sono usciti dalla stazione. Si dice che qualcuno é stato arrestato. In Piazza Verdi affluiscono folti gruppi di compagni: siamo tutti stremati, assenti, scossi. Molti girano per la piazza chiedendo di questo e di quello, io chiedo di Sara, di Gigi, di altri amici e solo quando li vedo riesco a sentirmi addosso la stanchezza, la fame, la sete. Tutti i bar sono chiusi, non c’é neache una fontanella per l’acqua. Molti entrano al “Cantunzein” e dopo un po’ girano pezzi di carne, frutta, bottiglie di vino. Penso che non é giusto né sbagliato. Nessuno si diverte del saccheggio, si mangia e si beve per tenersi su. Non riesco a parlare con nessuno, non mi va di raccontare e di sentire racconti. Riprendo a pensare a Francesco, alla morte, all’assenza, a me. La notte mi ha riportato la paura, gli scricchiolii delle porte. Ogni sigaretta sa di lacrimogeno.”

It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space. Frances Quinlan showed up to NPR HQ in Washington, D.C., in February, just after Presidents' Day — which explains her multiple mid-performance jokes about White House residents. But even if her Tiny Desk concert had happened in July, the allusions wouldn't have surprised me. As a songwriter, Quinlan is piercingly astute at making connections between her present reality and the wider world; her songs often narrate other stories she's heard, fictional or real, from a place of wide-eyed empathy. (It's unclear, however, whether George Washington's teeth — the subject of one such mid-set digression — have made it into one of her songs.) Quinlan is a Tiny Desk veteran, having played here in 2015 with her indie-rock band, Hop Along. You could argue she has even more Tiny Desk experience than that; as Quinlan pointed out during her set, a can of Hop Along-branded beer has been sitting on the Tiny Desk shelves through numerous previous concerts, including Lizzo's. This time around, she performed songs from her debut solo album, Likewise. She was accompanied by two musicians who played on Likewise: her Hop Along bandmate Joe Reinhart, on bass and guitar, and Molly Germer on violin, and their quiet accompaniment suited her expressive, introspective songs. Quinlan has the kind of voice that can pack an emotional punch in a whisper or expand to fill a room, and her songs seem to carry their own velocity – lurching forward and drawing back, with unique melodies that unfurl in unexpected and satisfying directions. At the Tiny Desk, it was a delight to watch it all unfold. Barnard suggests using it to store towels, accessories, products, or houseplants.

Janet Lorusso, owner and principal designer at Boston-based JRL Interiors, says the cart would be perfectly placed next to a deep, free-standing soaking tub to hold your bath essentials.

“Having a cohesive design to your bath collection set can go a long way to bringing the entire bathroom together,” says Allen Michael, founder and editor of HomeViable.com.

The porcelain Raffia Bath Collection, featuring a tissue holder, soap dish, lotion dispenser, tumbler, and canister ($16 to $50, anthropologie.com), brings the right balance of style and simplicity with understated details, he says.

Barnard adds that the “cool gray lines (and) their imperfections” enhance the design appeal, and “everyone needs a stylish hideaway for cotton balls, tissue boxes, and other utilitarian objects.”

On a cold morning, there are few things more luxurious than stepping out of the shower and grabbing a warm towel. You can create that experience in your own bathroom with a free-standing electric towel warmer ($139.99, wayfair.com).

“This is one of those smaller, achievable items that will make you or any houseguest feel truly pampered,” Purcell says.

Along with the coziness, the towel warmer will also reduce mold and mildew growth, says Cristina Miguelez, a Wilmington, DE–based remodeling specialist at home remodeling information site FIXR. It will also dry towels quickly, she says, meaning you can wash them less often, which will offset the cost of the added electricity.

5. Soft, nonslip rug

Rugs in the bathroom “add a level of warmth and cozy to a generally cool space,” says Sherri Monte, a Seattle-based interior designer, home organizer, and co-owner of Elegant Simplicity. She prefers rugs that add texture, color, or pattern underfoot.

Stepping onto a plush chenille rug ($23.99, wayfair.com) after your shower or bath feels great on your bare feet, Lorusso says. Plus, it features nonskid backing to keep you from slipping.

A deep, plush rug also absorbs water, so you don’t leave puddles or wet footprints on your bathroom floor—and, they usually dry quickly, Miguelez says.

6. Stylish and functional toilet brush

A sparkling clean bathroom is like having a luxury spa right in your home. But, whether to keep the cleaning tools in plain sight is up for debate in the design world, Michael says.

This stylish toilet bowl brush and holder ($7.12, walmart.com) is not only functional, but it also has a minimalist look that will mesh with your other decor.

Purcell says she has this toilet brush in her own home: “It is a staple that any bathroom has to have, and this one is supercompact, cheap, and fits perfectly under my sink,” she says.

7. Cotton waffle shower curtain

“To die for” is how Monte describes this organic Turkish cotton waffle shower curtain by Coyuchi ($98, anthropologie.com).

“It’s modern textural pattern and monochromatic look gives all those spalike feels,” she says, adding that the best part is that it’s machine-washable.

The classic design works well in traditional and contemporary spaces and is a “beautiful basic,” Barnard says.

8. Shower caddy

If you love to try out new bath and shower products, it’s easy to run out of space for them all. Adding an in-shower tension pole caddy ($87.98, walmart.com) increases storage space without requiring any permanent changes to your bathroom, Miguelez says.

“The more shelving I can get in the shower, the better,” Purcell says. She likes this unit for its rust-free aluminum, which means it will look fresh after repeated water exposure, and the bamboo accents offer a sophisticated look.

9. Rain shower head

A rain shower head adds luxury to your bathroom.

There’s nothing like a refreshing shower to get your day off to a good start, and a good shower head makes it happen. This rain shower head by Moen ($64.99, wayfair.com) will attach to your existing shower arm.

Monte says the Moen brand is a “standard setter,” which provides high-quality products that really “class up the joint.”

This shower head is also EPA WaterSense–certified and uses about 20% less water than the federal standard. Miguelez, also a Moen fan, says even with the commitment to water conservation, the shower head still offers a full spray so you don’t feel deprived.

10. Motion-sensor trash can

“Having one with a cover that you don’t have to come in contact with is definitely a perk for the germophobes among us,” Lorusso says.

This water-resistant, motion-sensor trash can ($22, walmart.com) features a lid that opens with the wave of your hand. Plus, the slim design makes it blend into your bathroom decor, or it could fit in a cabinet or closet, Purcell says.

The motion sensor is an “added bonus,” she says, “so when your hands are full, you can easily open and close the lid without getting it messy.”

There was the live band assembled for the occasion, which included George Lewis Jr. (aka Twin Shadow) on bass and drummer Chuck Treece, who's worked with everyone from Bad Brains to Billy Joel. There was the lack of a microphone — and, by extension, vocal amplification — not to mention the fact that, as Santigold herself noted, "I don't know what I'm doing up here with no dancers." Fortunately, Santi White has been revising and reinventing her sound for two decades now. If anything, performing her genre-straddling R&B and electro-pop with a live band represented a return to roots, given that she'd spent the early aughts singing in the punk band Stiffed — with Treece on drums, in fact. Everything about this set feels like the culmination of hard work, from the custom arrangements to the singer's hair/hat combo, an architectural marvel that warrants closer inspection. Given that Santigold had canceled her North American tour weeks earlier — she flew into D.C. for this occasion — it's a wonder her Tiny Desk debut even happened. Thank goodness it did.
