the more i think about it the more i feel like sam and sarah are two sides of the same coin in book 1, they both hate living in paradise but they take it in completely different directions

sam goes down the path of conspiracy theories about aliens and while this is largely in part because of malcolm’s disappearance, i feel like being the weird kid in a small rural town also pushed him towards it. being stuck in the middle of nowhere with no friends and no answers to what happened to his dad likely really messed with his head, and since we know he was really into sci-fi stuff (iirc he had a star wars poster in his bedroom which is really funny to me because luke was in the exact same situation in a new hope) it was probably the first thing that felt familiar to him. i feel like it probably turned into a cycle; he got deeper into alien conspiracy theories, he became more ostracised for it, and with nothing better to do he dug deeper.

sarah, on the other hand, tried to make the most of her situation. she tried to be the stereotypical small town popular girl, she became cheerleading captain, she dated the footballer, she did everything “right” but she was never really happy. so she tried to be more herself, she took up photography, she volunteered for the animal shelter in colorado(?) and tried to be a better person, but she still never really felt happy in paradise.

both of them wanted a more exciting life than the one they got in paradise, even if sam was more overt about it; that’s what made john so appealing to them both, he was probably the only kid in their school who spent a large portion of his life outside of paradise and to them he represented the world outside of their small town.

i’m not sure how to end this off so yeah

hey there, LL fandom!

first off i have been gone for a while, whoops, hello

second, i have been on a huge tabletop dev kick lately, and i am considering whipping up something for lorien legacies! i'm not sure yet how much of it would be its own system vs how much of it would be a supplement for an existing, larger game, but LL has some worldbuilding that i think would adapt really well to RPG format and i thought it'd be neat to give it a shot.

right now the main things i'm planning on adapting in some form are:

legacies, Of Course

charms

the Goop, especially augments and vatborn

chimæra

garde vs non-garde

species (where relevant and appropriate)

whatever is going on with the entity, the spark, and how they relate to different planets' alive-or-dead status

staying undercover vs strategically revealing information

establishing bases, resources, and backup vs being ready to make a clean getaway

guidelines for making/tweaking new legacies, charms, etc while keeping them balanced and fun, as well as leaving room for people to use their own interpretations of the worldbuilding

And So On

it might take me a while to get around to it, and it might turn into a Huge Complex Thing of Its Own, or might just be good for some flavoring and small mechanical twists added on to an existing game. but i think it'd be a lot of fun to work on, and if anyone has suggestions for systems you think it might work well with or other things from the books to adapt, feel free to weigh in!

Headcanons about John as a leader post-Reborn trilogy

He is quite politically active what with founding the New Loric Org. and representing his community on the world stage but his heart is really with his community

He is also rather tight-lipped regarding his political opinions when he’s not in the village. This is because he doesn’t want to piss off powerful people enough to wind up with a bullet in his skull. He’s increasingly aware that he’s not actually invulnerable

He has a kind of quiet power to him

Since the UN doesn’t recognize the New Lorien community as a state he sits with civil society. He’s pulling double duty representing both the New Lorien org and the village/community’s interests (predetermined in conversations with the chief). There are always 1 or 2 others with him. Civil society love that he’s there but are annoyed by how often they get “no comment” responses

He cares so so deeply for his community. He loves the people. Like he organizes BBQs and stands in an apron cooking burgers and making bad jokes. Children adore him and run up to him asking to fly (telekinetically).

He goes to the hospital to offer his healing services and talk to the people there once a week.

He knows basically everyone’s name. Yes it’s a conscious effort but also: he learned the names of the village people while living in the cave + he winds up having contact with most students at some point or another (organizing people when they first got there, leading New Lorien Org., etc.)

He sometimes gives tours to refugees who first enter the community and he tries to say hi within the first 48hrs, whether they plan to stay or not, and to political visitors.

He keeps track of a bunch of projects that New Lorien has underway. Some are for the community some are not. At any given time John is advising/supporting students in executing a half dozen projects.

He’s really approachable. It’s the boy-scout energy

He does inspirational speeches/sells his time for events to make money to support the community and New Lorien Org. Others do this too (ex. Taylor) but John’s the most expensive and least active.

Clearly John is busy and a mess at home. Often forgets/misses lunch because he’s busy, falls asleep over his work often. Eventually he gets better at caring for himself but it takes time (and letting his support system actually work)

Also he goes to a group therapy session (not the same time as Marina’s) and loves it. He works through his trauma, eventually goes to apologize to Sarah’s family (for mostly the correct reasons/not ‘It’s my fault she’s dead’), and learns to care for himself
