I think Iā€™ve finally pinpointed why I dislike the later seasons of Gilmore Girls (and by this I mean after season 3/4). I just hate how much it resembles a soap opera. All of the ā€˜dramaticā€™ scenes and plot lines are overplayed and just donā€™t seem realistic anymore. Before the show was charming and semi-relatable but, in the later seasons, it just feels like the writing was out of touch. The whole Lukeā€™s secret daughter plot line really adds to this, too. All the characters started acting strange just for the dramatic effect, or at least thatā€™s what it felt like. Maybe this is just me, but the later seasons just feelā€¦off.

You had your legs on a table of Luke's diner, and you could not fathom how anyone could ever be more bored than this. You had to sit through Liz Danes' bachelorette party. You could imagine anything that would have been better than this. Being out with Rory and Paris, talking to Lorelai, or even letting Michel show you pictures of his chow chows. Letting out a sigh, you went back to reading Anna Karenina while the middle-aged women were talking about women not being monogamous creatures. "Is this how turkey legs are supposed to look?" Luke asked with a pained expression on his face. Carrie, one of the louder ones, said something about him taking his pants off so they could see for themselves. As much as you hated it, their conversations were kind of interesting. "Get your legs off my table I've got customers eating on 'em," Luke scolded as he looked at the turkey leg in his hand, as if he hoped that it would tell him whether it was cooked or not. You put your legs down and continued reading.
"I need to get some batteries, I'll be back," Jess said as he walked down the stairs. He noticed you were at the diner and stopped in his tracks. "Didn't know that you liked spending your afternoons with middle aged women." That comment made Carrie and the other women gasp. "The old ladies I wanted to knit with were busy, so I had to find company."
"Good book though," He said while you hummed in response. "Jess, Jess! Come over here and meet my oldest friends!" Liz said as she beckoned him over. Jess looked like he wanted to be anywhere but there. "Girls, this is Jess," Liz said proudly. A chorus of 'hellos' sounded. "Hello, handsome," Carrie said as she winked. You had to stifle a laugh for the sake of Jess. "He's going to walk me down the aisle! Is that cool or what?" Liz said to her group.
"It's no big deal," Jess said, trying to draw away attention from him. You found this funny. "It's a very big deal," you said with a dramatic look on your face. Jess gave an unimpressed look. At that time, a deliveryman walked through the door.
"Can I help you?" Luke asked with the confusion written across his face. "Got a package here." "From who? I'm not expecting anything?"
"It's a very important package," the deliveryman said with a serious look on his face. Luke stepped closer. "But there's no address on it?"
Jess smirked as he looked over to you. "I was going to go to the bookstore after getting batteries. Care to join?" he said, extending his hand to you. Looking for any way to escape this situation, you obliged. "Bye Luke, see you later."
"Have fun," Jess said with a laugh as you left the diner and heard a muffled "Have fun with what?!" as music started blaring from the inside.
-
"I was already having a bad day and then some guy had to spill his coffee all over my new blouse and my copy of crime and punishment," you lamented to Jess while you walked towards the bookstore which you frequented. "I didn't have enough money to get myself a new copy and a new blouse, so I decided to get the blouse because of my internship." Jess smiled at that. You were hardworking and diligent, while he was... less of that. You just got the coveted internship at one of the most competitive law firms in Connecticut, and you needed to make a good impression; a shiny copy of crime and punishment accompanied by a coffee stained lavender blouse wouldn't exactly do that.
The jingle of the door chime woke you from your thoughts about your precious copy of crime and punishment. Jess bent his head and didn't say anything to Kirk, the acting cashier, while you smiled and greeted him. You knew he wasn't one for politeness, so you tried to compensate.
"There's something I think you'll like." Jess meandered towards a shelf hidden at the back. You cluelessly trailed, wondering what book it could be. Knowing Jess, it could be a 2000 page book about a whale or a 20 page romance novel; the man read anything and everything with words on it. When he pulled a book off a shelf, your jaw dropped.
The blood-red lettering reading "crime and punishment" contrasted starkly to the obsidian binding that you ran your fingertips across.
"wow, this must cost a fortune, maybe i'll get it once my paycheck can get me more than one cup of instant ramen."
"let's go, i need to see what the guy at the diner did to luke,"
-
"does this dress look like too much?" you ask while twirling around in front of Lorelai. "no, this one is perfect. It makes you look like you'd be sitting in a tower waiting for your prince to save you from a dragon." You looked at her while she lounged on the couch in the house you had graciously invited yourself into. Well, she wasn't wrong. The dress was a light blue, silky fabric billowing around your ankles. The sleeves added to the whimsicalness of the dress. "only if the prince was Jesse Bradford,"
"you know what would make Prince Bradford fall in love with you even more? this flower crown," Lorelai said as she got up and pulled out a pretty-looking headband from a shelf. She put it on you and turned you towards a mirror.
"rory never let me dress her up like a princess; i should adopt you."
-
"hear ye, hear ye! announcing the arrival of her Royal Highness, the Princess, finally gracing us with her presence!"
"shut up, i was five minutes late; being a princess is hard work, you should know," you joked to Jess. You two met up near the gazebo, his reasoning being that he needed to make fun of you all dressed up as long as he could before he had to walk his mom down the aisle. "do you want to go get a seat? you're gonna be here for a long time. or maybe not, i've only been to three of my mom's weddings. "aren't you gonna sit down too?" you asked. "my mom wants me there to give her "emotional support" whatever that means," he joked as he led you to a seat next to lorelai and luke. Carrie from the diner yesterday was talking to them. lorelai looked concerned and luke just looked uncomfortable.
"hey, is everything alright?"
"no, there's gonna be a delay since liz ripped her dress and it's gonna take some time to fix it," carrie explained. "she told me to spread the message,"
"well, spread it car." luke got a suggestive look from carrie. "the message, the message." When carrie walked away, luke looked like he hadn't gotten oxygen in a good five minutes. "that woman makes me uncomfortable."
"poor liz, does she know how to fix something like that?" you asked jess and luke. "she was never one for household skills-" "i used to stitch up her renaissance fair costumes. trust me, she can't" jess interrupted luke. "i'll go see if she needs some help. where did you say she was?"
"she's at miss patty's,
-
You could hear Liz's laments from outside miss patty's. "my dress is ruined! how am i going to get married in a torn dress?" you pushed open the doors to Miss Patty's and gave Liz a concerned look. "I heard you needed some help? can i do anything for you Liz?" you asked, moving over to take a look at her dress. "I'm such a klutz, i tripped standing up and now its torn," she held up the side of her dress where there was an obvious tear. You grimaced and picked up the Doose's brand sewing kit from the table next to her, attempting to fix her dress.
"There you go! as good as new," you finished up the last stitch on her dress. "Oh, you're such a darling," Liz fixed up her hair. "you'd make a great daughter in law to a lucky lady someday. Could you tell jess to get ready for my grand entrance?"
The implied message didn't go past you. With cheeks redder than what your dollar store blush could get you, you thanked her and went down to the gazebo.
-
The ceremony passed by quickly, with you and Jess trying to think of sad and miserable things to make you stop laughing at the proceedings. "Oh man, i swear to you my wedding's gonna be better than whatever that was," you said, wiping the tears of laughter from your eyes as everyone went to the buffet line to get some food. "We'll see that," jess said as he inspected a turkey leg before putting it on his plate. You gave him an offended look. "Do you not think my wedding would be so much better than this 1500s medieval thing going on out here? I'd totally pick out a better theme," you said as you piled some mysterious looking food onto your plate. "I highly doubt that, and I hope you know that what you're putting on your plate is minced liver."
Your hand froze right right before you almost dumped another spoonful food onto your plate. You promptly pushed off the whole serving of minced liver back into the serving bowl. "That was so uncouth of you, private school girl. Did they not teach you manners at your finishing school?" You elbowed jess in the side as you chose a much more appetising looking burger prepared specially, from luke's. "one, i'm in college now; two let's sit down. I don't think they taught you table manners either city boy,"
-
After finishing up your dinner, you two decided to walk around to socialise. If socialise meant to make fun of every person in renaissance attire.
"the guy in the pantaloons probably thinks energy drinks count as water," jess pressed his lips to your ear, narrowly missing your cheek because of how much you were laughing. Everyone must have thought you two were drunk or high, from how hard you two were laughing. That was when you heard medieval sounding music playing where everyone had gathered.
"jess. you have to dance to this. i physically need to see it," you clung onto his arm, bringing him to the area near the gazebo, where Liz and TJ were dancing. They were doing some complicated looking dance straight out of the middle ages. "no way am i doing that. i'd rather slam my tongue in a car door." "please...?" "no." "...pretty please?" "fine, but you're coming out there with me." and before you could say no, he'd already dragged you to the dancefloor.
you'd be lying if you said you didn't have fun embarrassing yourselves. you'd only been dragged out of the dancefloor because TJ wanted to seranade Liz with a special dance just for her, and boy, were you glad you didn't have to see that.
-
Jess was walking you over to the gilmore house, where you'd been crashing with lorelai since your exams had been over. You, being a rich international student who's parents knew Richard and Emily Gilmore, had been asked to stay with them when you went to Chilton, and to Yale subsequently. Of course you could always tell them that your exams hadn't ended yet, and you were still staying at Yale, but where's the fun in that? You, lorelai, and rory, were planning on having a weekend of binging old movies and junking on the most unhealthy food you could find, so being a few days early wasn't a problem.
"after this is back to new york?" you asked him while approaching the door of lorelai's house. "maybe not, this time. might stay here for a bit; it's not that bad," he responded, leaning on the door. "any plans for summer?" you looked up at him. "you know, i've always wanted a summer romance. you know the type you read in the books, the notebook and stuff like that," you played with the straps of your purse. "maybe that'll be one of my plans," he said as he grabbed your waist and held you right up to him. "want it to be longer than just summer though." he pressed his lips to yours as he ran his fingers through your hair. you took a second to react, but you were kissing him back too. when you pulled apart for air, breathing heavy, you smiled.
"can't wait"

Pros and cons of every Gilmore Girls season
Season 1
Pros: cozy vibes, everything is new, some of the best episodes of the show, Christmas episode, Lorelai and Luke's sexual tension,
Cons: boring love stories, Tristan, The Damn Donna Reed episode, Rory ending up with Dean in the end and the show trying to brainwash us into thinking it's romantic
Season 2
Pros: still cozy vibes, Jess is introduced, finally some good love interests and love stories, Tristan leaves, Lane discovers her love for drums
Cons: Rory is with Dean the whole season and they argue in almost every episode
Season 3

Season 6

This thought isn't fully developed, but having seen various discussions regarding Liz and Jimmy lately, I started pondering about their role in the show, and other slightly questionable themes.
Regarding whether or not Liz was retconned, I don't think she was exactly, but I DO think ASP wanted to make her likeable (or at least sympathetic) so she leaned into the more funny/kooky side rather than some of the poor parenting which was previously established. Despite the fact that Liz and Jess both tell the viewers that she had a string of bad boyfriends and drank during his pregnancy, none of this is really focused on.
Similarly, when Jimmy goes to see Jess, runs out on him and then later refuses to even allow his son to stay the night, these aspects aren't focused on. They are there, most explicitly with Jess breaking down on the boardwalk and telling Jimmy he 'has nothing' and that he is like him after being told Jimmy is a 'screw-up', yet the focus is more on Jimmy's eclectic life with his fun girlfriend, kid in the closet and house full of music and memorabilia. Presumably had Windward Circle happened more of Jimmy's character would be explored, but I suspect the emphasis would be on Jimmy now, and him learning about Jess, rather than his running out on him as a baby.
Finally, a theme which personally frustrates me (as I know it does others) are random proposals which are used to fix arguments. Lane and Zach don't address any of their issues but Zach gives her a sweet proposal in the diner so apparently it doesn't matter. Interestingly, this doesn't happen with Lorelai and Max - in fact, it's the opposite, which I believe is due to Lorelai being the main character. GG is mainly about people, and how complex and flawed we are as we move through the world, and therefore a cute proposal isn't going to fix it. In contrast, Lane and Zach are secondary characters, and so their relationship and marriage is given less attention, as with Sookie and Jackson and Liz and TJ. This is a slight side note but ASP seems to have a surprising conservative streak in this sense, in that characters in relationships are considered almost cowardly if they DON'T get married. Either way, the sweetness/kookiness of these sudden marriages play into these themes with Liz and Jimmy and, perhaps, Anna later on.
To wind it all up, it seems to be part of the screwball nature of the series. ASP loves elements of screwball comedies, most notably the fast talking, but these random proposals and funny side characters are part of it too. The show uses this focus first and the potentially sadder or more serious lens second and so, with characters such as Liz and Jimmy, humour is the priority.

Itā€™s not April I couldnā€™t stand in Gilmore Girls it was Anna.
WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE acting like youā€™re in charge when you kept Luke from his daughter for YEARS
AND MAKING HIM FEEL LIKE HEā€™S ON PROBATION WITH HIS OWN DAUGHTER WHO YOU NEVER TOLD HIM EXISTED. The audacity šŸ™„
Lorelaiā€™s conversation with Anna was the catalyst that pushed for the ultimatum that got us stuck with Christopher for a whole season šŸ˜
The only good thing that came out of that was Luke punching ChrisšŸ¤£
So in conclusion April was not the villain she was just getting to know her dad it was Anna acting all righteous when she kept someone she knows is a good man in the dark about his daughter for a decade šŸ™ƒ
Anna Nardini was one of the most infuriating fictional characters Iā€™ll die on this hill šŸ¤£

So I just finished Gilmore Girls for the first time and boy, do I have some thoughts:
First of all, I love this show so much. More than I ever thought I would. Itā€™s just so comforting. I totally get it now.
Now, for specifics.
Lorelai:
I love Lorelai. She does make some dumb choices, but in the end, sheā€™s just so loveable and fun, I canā€™t help but adore her.
Rory:
I do not get the hate Iā€™ve seen for Rory! Yes, like her mom, she makes stupid decisions, but sheā€™s so wonderful. Maybe itā€™s just because I relate to her so closely, but I love Rory so much.
Luke:
Ughhhh I love love love Luke. Heā€™s so unexpectedly hilarious sometimes?? I did not foresee that when I started. Scott Patterson is also strangely one of the best actors on the show, which I also did not expect. Luke is a gem, we love him.
Luke & Lorelai:
How could you not love these two together? Theyā€™re absolutely perfect for each other and the pining, especially on Lukeā€™s part, makes for incredible television. I do think their dynamic kind of lost the really special ā€˜will they, wonā€™t theyā€™ tension after season 1/2, but I still ship them. So glad they ended up together. When she was still with Christopher near the end of season 7, I got a little worried.
Paris:
PARIS IS GAY. I will accept nothing less. She is queer in some way, whether sheā€™s a lesbian or bi. She had absolutely no chemistry with any of her love interests but so much with Rory. Also sheā€™s just amazing all around. I fucking love Paris. Make her queer, cowards.
Lane:
How could you not love Lane? Sheā€™s the absolute shit. Cool, supportive, loyal, and a fucking rockstar. I didnā€™t mind her with Zach to begin with (even though I thought it was a bit strange how they all of a sudden liked each other), but when they got married and had kids, that was a big nope for me. Lane Kim deserved to be a famous rockstar.
Emily & Richard:
I went back and forth on these two. On one hand, theyā€™re very entertaining characters and I do believe theyā€™re trying to do what they think is best, but on the other, I think in the end they do more harm than good. The way they dismiss Lorelaiā€™s trauma, and completely disregard everyone elseā€™s opinion because they assume they automatically know whatā€™s best, just rubs me the wrong way. Not to mention the manipulation and the going behind peopleā€™s backs. I think there shouldā€™ve been an arc at the end where they finally listened to Lorelai and acknowledged what theyā€™d done and tried to change for the better.
Sookie:
Melissa McCarthy is great in everything, and this is no exception. Sheā€™s so sweet and lovable, and such a good friend to Lorelai. I love her. Plus her relationship with Jackson is just lovely.
Michel:
Heā€™s such a sarcastic bitch and I love him. I think thatā€™s all there is to say.
The Townies and Side Characters:
Kirk - Kirk is maybe the funniest part of the show and such a little sweetheart, I love him so much.
Babette - aka the best neighbour ever. We deserved even more of her and Morey than we got.
Miss Patty - same goes for Patty! We need more Patty!
Taylor - annoying and obnoxious but the show wouldnā€™t be the same without him. Irreplaceable.
Gypsy - again, we needed more!! Gypsy was so funny and I just wanted more!
April - I love April! Sheā€™s so sweet. I donā€™t, however, like what her arrival did to Luke and Lorelaiā€™s relationship, and I fucking hate Anna.
Christopher - I donā€™t hate him, but heā€™s definitely not one of my favourites. I think it wouldā€™ve been a lot better if he and Lorelai had just been really close friends, or if he had just been fully out of the picture.
And finally, the boys:
Dean:
FUCK. DEAN. Do I need to say more? Heā€™s a toxic, possessive, asshole and I hate him. He was okay in the beginning, but the ā€˜50s episode really clinched my hatred for him. Huge nope from me. What a dick.
Logan:
Man, do I hate Logan. Obviously not as bad as Dean, but heā€™s such a douchebag!! I genuinely cannot stand him or put up with any of his bullshit. I thought he would grow on me as the show went on but no, I only hated him more.
Jess:
Best for last. My love for this man knows no bounds. Obviously the best fit for Rory, I love them together, but also his relationship with Luke is so great. Also, justice for his and Roryā€™s relationship while they were dating!! Why did we only get to see it when shit hit the fan? They kept mentioning how they were going to hang out, that they were meeting up later on, so why didnā€™t we get to see any of it? Why did we only get to see them when Jess fucked up? I hate that. I also hate that they didnā€™t end up together, even when Jess grew and changed and bettered himself. Anyway, I just love him. I could talk about him forever.
A Year in the Life:
They tried to fit 22 episodes worth of Gilmore Girls into 4 episodes, and it didnā€™t work. The first episode did an okay job, and I did kind of love the last episode (the wedding!), but the middle two were. . . yikes. No theme song/opening titles? No transitions? NO SOOKIE EXCEPT FOR ONE SCENE AT THE END? Michel thinking about leaving the inn and Lorelai being abandoned by both of her friends? No Jackson? Rory being with an engaged Logan? Basically no Jess except for a few scenes, one of which broke my heart? I could go on forever.
That being said, they should make more after the cliffhanger they left us on. Iā€™ll take whatever I can get, even if itā€™s subpar.
Anyway those are just a few of my many thoughts about this show. I canā€™t believe I waited until now to watch it. I need someone to talk about this show with so if you see this and want to talk, DM me.

imo it is actually Anna Nardini free because every single other character has someone who dogs on them and calls them out (even if the audience isn't supposed to agree with the call-out). no character ever mentions how messed up what Anna did is even if it arguably wasn't as bad as other things. like even Luke never really has anything bad to say. but I mean they had clearly started running out of ideas by Anna Nardini

Music that works with the epithet erased cast!
Molly- Karma by AJR(and if she has a epitome I feel like DONT WASTE MY TIME by Legrand would work.)
Sylvester- the serious adult facade he attempts to put on would be Please Hold by Jono, or jazz, maybe even some classy music once in a while, but he would secretly enjoy techno music. Specifically opinions by CG5 or Dopamine Highscore by Legrand. (mainly because of the dopamine rush from the notes)
Giovanni- The Villain I Appear To be, all the way. But he would listen to stuff like smooth/soft rock.
Trixie- the artist Good Kid. That's it. It fits her. The style, the beat, the everything, she listens to it and you can't convince me otherwise.
Phoenica- the underwater mario level music soundtrack fits her, but she listens to cheesy love songs. I totally didn't have any in my Playlists.. coughs in from the start by laufley
Naven- six legs(tippy tappy toes) by scrawny fits him, specifically the music. If he wants music to listen to he has someone produce it for him.
Lorelai- I couldn't think of anything, but she listens to No normal music, only anime openings.
And yes, all this songs are music from various Playlists of mine.
Music mentioned below.

Im the same way with ANY media esp show storylines where they drag out "the decision" and even THE PARENTS tell the heroine she doesnt have to carry to term but she like believes its "meant to be" or w/e. Like girl, abort that thang!! it always takes me out of the narratives because its such a no brainer to me i immediately lose patience. Lol
I mean:
Tumblr media
That show had WAY too many unwanted pregnancies for it to be a coincidence that none of them or anybody around them ever said the word "abortion" except for Christopher's father, Straub mentioning something about getting rid of it and Emily flat out refusing. Lorelai, Rory, Sookie, Anna, Sherry, Liz, and Lane all got pregnant without wanting to be and none of them, as per the narrative, even CONSIDERED abortion!

I actually have a headcanon about this- that Luke's mom is the opposite of William Danes, where the latter, according to Liz, was a former version of Luke and Jess to some extent. And I personally think (and I've read in some fics) that William Danes was someone who fought in the war and suffers from PTSD, and his wife was someone who eased the tension and made him forget about it. Maybe Luke subconsciously likes those kinds of women, maybe because presumably, his mother died of cancer but made him promise to remember her as the woman who raised him and not the woman at the end. Or it just could be her passion for something that is considered "ridiculous" by most people and her zeal to live life king-size.
It's like This is Us's core couple Jack and Rebecca to some extend... If you know what I mean.
IMO, I personally think that if they gave Doula more personality and screen time, she could shape up to be the 2.0 version of Grandma Danes. She could be obsessed with dance or even singing- I think that would personally move Luke whenever he hears Doula sing.
Personally, I don't see April fitting that mould given her sciency background. And TBH, it would be fun to see Doula as a foil to Jess in a sibling sense.
IDK, but it's a great observation @stellaluna33
When I compare Rachel, Anna, and Lorelai, it becomes obvious that Luke Danes definitely had a "type." He likes artsy, free-spirited chicks.

So I think in season 6 Gilmore Girls takes Rory and Lorelai's suburban lifestyle from being vaguely unrealistic to straight up delululand.
First of all, Richard and Emily support Rory for months, set her up with a job, remodel the pool house for her, and we're supposed to think they are horribly oppressive because they don't want her to sneak Logan over for sex?! She's a big girl, if she wants to have an adult life with adult pursuits and no restrictions, she can move out and seek them (which she does). What I don't understand is why she's entitled to have sex on her grandparents's property despite their protestations when she doesn't do that at her mother's house after the Dean debacle (Logan only spends the night after Rory asks for permission two years into their relationship and even then they don't sleep in the same bed) and why this course of action is so horribly punitive that it means that she doesn't have to pay them back for the first two years of Yale and accepts Christopher's money because she doesn't want to owe her grandparents anything. Girl, you owe them at least 70K and you are the one who set up the plan to repay them. Start saving.
Rory moves in with Paris and Doyle but it's never clear where her share of the bills comes from (Christopher, probably) since she doesn't seem to have a steady paying job, even though she claims she is living with them to stay humble. The connection between needing to work and having the ability to support yourself remains tenuous and will get only worse in AYITL.
However, we will move onto Luke and Lorelai. Luke never spends money and always has a ton of it. Lorelai mysteriously never had money issues after the Dragonfly opens. However, this gets kind of insane in season 6. Luke has thousands of dollars to drop on remodeling the house (and that's before TJ rips a giant hole in the upstairs). When April shows up, he tells Anna he will pay her TWELVE YEARS OF BACKDATED CHILD SUPPORT. Lorelai organizes her entire wedding in a day and secures a wedding dress and multiple deposits. When the wedding is postponed and Lorelai worries about losing the deposits, he just tells her they'll get new ones. Where the fuck is this middle class couple getting all this money? The average cost of a wedding in 2006 was 27,852. But sure, they'll just magically replace all that money they spent.
I can't say it gets any better in S7, because it's still ambiguous who's paying Rory's bills in the latter half of the season, Luke finances a child custody battle and a new boat, and Lorelai seemingly is prepared to take off weeks to go ride roller coasters with Rory right as Sookie is nearing the end of her third pregnancy. At this point, I'm guessing we'll just go with the flow, but it does make Lorelai's conversations with Logan about Rory needing to stay humble seem a tad hypocritical.
