so i finally did it: flowey the flower's classpect & asriel dreemurr

obligatory disclaimer that this post will include massive spoilers for undertale and undertale yellow.

let's get the obvious out of the way first - what is flowey's ASPECT? this is something that i feel is pretty obvious, he's a very clear-cut doom player.

he deals with inevitability and predestination, has a very nihilistic and cynical worldview based on his soulless perception of the world and the repetitions he's gone through, and he's associated a lot with some very morbid and edgy imagery. in particular, i think it's his manipulations with fate and inevitability that solidify him as a player of doom (save states and such). it's for this same reason that i believe sans is a doom player, but that's for another essay.

what's his class? well, let's get into how flowey experiences doom.

flowey's existence, from the very moment of his creation, has been defined by doom. an inability to die or cessate his own existence that leads to a plethora of lives full to the brim with death, experiments with predestination and a general morbid curiosity. flowey does things until he's exhausted every single possible outcome of the situation, and then he moves on to the next until he's sucked all novelty and nuance out of it, effortlessly manipulating doom and making it bend to his whim.

a lot of people would be quick to place him as a witch because of this, but personally i think that flowey's absolute will and dominion places him at an even higher tier.

flowey isn't a witch, he is a lord of doom. he holds absolute control over the aspect of doom, exhibiting full control over inevitability and decay in every facet.

let's just look at some of the things flowey does. he subjects clover to countless resets and deaths at his hand for his own amusement, sets up the denizens of the underground like little dolls for him to play with until they break apart, all the while plotting to grasp more control and seize true dominion. he's a textbook lord, endlessly determined and power-hungry as he lets nothing stand in the way of his goal (acquisition of the SOULs). much in the same way, we see caliborn's quest for power leaving similar destruction in its wake and he holds the same determination, hell, they're even associated with the same laugh soundbyte! the similarities are all there, and the stunted mental development definitely shows for both of them given they're a kid who never properly got the chance to grow up.

in fact, it's the link to caliborn that brings me to my next point. what of asriel?

simple. in the same way the caliborn has his calliope, the muse of space, flowey has his asriel, the muse of life. this may sound contradictory to the asriel we see in the finale of undertale, but i propose that this is an asriel still under the throes of the inversion that brings flowey his classpect.

their true classpect has always been the muse of life, it's merely that flowey's soulless state brings about an inversion that is only 'fixed', if you will, after asriel is brought back to normality.

the real asriel is much like a muse. he is tender, emotional, caring, perhaps a little weak-willed or timid at times. he is the narrative's driving force but in a wholly passive manner. throughout the whole game asriel is the inspiration that hangs over the plot (throughout BOTH games in fact, his role in deltarune very much cements his role as a muse) but we never see him until the final hour. much like a muse, he has become his aspect for the sake of the narrative. life, of course, represents growth, affluence, the natural energy of all things, and uses both baking and plant-life as symbolism. consider what asriel and chara used for their plot, and what flowey is now, and those two symbols make a lot more sense.

so, though asriel and flowey have two separate classpects by technicality, they are still the same person and it's a inversion similar to that people say rose underwent during her descent into 'grimdarkness', going from a seer of light to a witch of void.

now, this is a controversial statement to make because a lot of homestuck fans question the validity of the 'inversion' argument, saying that it's never explicitly stated in canon and to that i say that homestuck is quite possibly the poster child for 'death of the author'. i want you to bear in mind this is my personal view on the subject and homestuck's fanbase has never been one to agree on any concrete interpretations of the classpect system.

The Prank Theory: Or, Why Toby won't make an explicit announcement that Kris' pronouns are they/them despite that obviously being canon.

Disclaimer: people who use they/them for Kris are NOT the butt of the joke here. Although calling it a prank might be a little misleading to begin with, you'll see why.

I know for a fact, judging from my dashboard, that I am not alone in being mad at people misgendering the humans of Undertale and Deltarune (although, I will admit I used to be part of the problem up until quite recently). And we all wish for Toby to just go out and publicly announce that Kris, Frisk, and Chara use they/them only, that Mad Mew Mew is canonically transfem, etc., just to stop all the misgendering. It would certainly be nice and very helpful for the LGBTQ community. However, after giving it some thought, I've come to the conclusion that it most likely cannot happen, and the reason why is the Prank Theory. Treat it as an explanation, but not an excuse.

I came up with Prank Theory over something that's completely unrelated to the above, funnily enough. You see, I have this headcanon that Asriel Dreemurr is not cisgender. I'm not entirely sure what his gender is, but he's not cis male for sure. And I've seen a variety of different takes on this concept. For example, AUs like (Ask) Fallen Royalty by @starlightshore present Asriel as having transitioned in a more feminine direction ((A)FR specifically describes her gender as feminine nonbinary). Others still write Asriel (chiefly the Deltarune one) as transgender male (I've mostly seen that take in NSFW fanfics on AO3, which is a shame cuz it has great potential beyond that. Please tell me where I can find more). Other others still, like my beloved mutual @sukifoof, have proposed that Asriel might be agender. And, let me be clear about something: those are all great ideas, and I love them. But I started to wonder, which of these ideas is the closest to canon? Like, if we also factor in authorial intent, which of these options would fit under it, and which ones wouldn't? That was when I came up with Prank Theory, as a way to kind of imagine at least one aspect of said authorial intent.

Spoiler alert, according to Prank Theory any kind of transfeminine Asriel is incompatible with canon, but again I want to make it clear that that doesn't mean I think they're "wrong" or "bad" or anything like that, and I want to reiterate my endorsement of writing Asriel this way. Besides, my theory could be completely wrong, so...

So, after all that stuff, what does the Prank Theory actually say? Well, in summary: Undertale and Deltarune are some of the most "woke" video games ever made, but conservatives and reactionaries don't seem to have realized that yet, funnily enough. Now, calling it a prank is a wee bit misleading, since it implies that tricking right-wingers into loving a video game with a very progressive setting and message was at least part of what Toby intended. And I don't believe that's the case. He simply makes video games he wants to make, and they just happen to reflect his views on the world, and these views just happen to fly over the heads of some people.

This in and of itself would probably not make it a huge problem for Toby to put in one of his newsletters, or even in an X (as in, former Twitter) post, a correction regarding the genders of his characters. However it does start to become a problem when you factor in that the UTDR community has hundreds of thousands of people in it (although as of the March 2024 it might be a rather liberal estimate), and many of them would be quite pissed off if the video game they like had "suddenly" "gone woke" (ignorant of the fact that both it, and its main creator have been openly "woke" the whole time). And that is a problem in the current environment, because it means that Toby, as well as other people on the UTDR dev team, would be at a significant risk of hate and harassment, which in the Year of Our Lord 2024 could lead to Angel knows what.

On a more cynical capitalist (and much more speculative) level, attracting political controversy this way could sour Toby's relationship with big video game companies which have (as far as I know) played an important part in why Toby's got basically unlimited resources to work on the game of his fever dreams. They saw the widespread, universal acclaim that UT, DR1 and DR2 received, and drew the conclusion that DR3-4 (and the future chapters) will also get a similar reception, and they will get great returns no matter how much money they pour into it. This belief could be shaken if Toby attracted the ire of his transphobic fans by correcting their misgendering of his characters, and thus limiting the reach Chapters 3 and 4 would otherwise have (but again, this is pure speculation, I'm not an economist, nor do I know how much companies like Nintendo have actually invested in Deltarune. So I could be, like, way off).

And that is, in the end, why I believe Toby Fox will not make a statement regarding the canon gender of any UTDR character, at least not while Deltarune is still in development. After it's finished I think he might feel free enough to take that step. But we'll have to see.

Now, I don't know if I'm right. I feel pretty confident in my own theory, but there's a good chance I missed something. So, if I did, please lemme know. In the meantime, let's hope Toby will disprove my theory soon and set things right. And I'll see you around.

So, while I primarily jaw about Sonic stuff? I’m also a pretty avid Deltarune fan, and like most in the Fandom I got my own ideas and theories of where this is all heading to. Now, the Big Stuff has been covered a dozen times by now, and better than I could do it, so I’m gonna introduce something a little small scale.

Namely, I think I got an idea of what is up with Kris’ half of the bedroom.

At a glance, this paints an incredibly dismal picture of Kris as a person, especially in contrast with Azzy’s half of the bedroom. It’s just a void of anything you’d expect a teenager to have- no decorations, no awards, nothing to indicate they have any kind of hobbies or interests, not even an alarm clock. Kris’ life is just an unholy, unnatural blank.

Likewise, it says nothing good about Kris’ dynamic with their family, at a glance. What kind of brother lords their accomplishments over their sibling in such a gratuitous manner? What kind of parents PERMIT something like this to occur? You’d be under the impression that Kris is blatantly neglected and overlooked, and it would seem born out by the fact virtually everyone in Hometown is more interested in talking TO Kris about Azzy rather than conversing with Kris for their own sake. The game system in the Dreemurr household has one good controller and one outdated, junky controller. Berdly even refers to Kris as a ‘fellow bluebird’, the context making it clear he regards Kris as being unremarkable and ignored as Berdly himself was prior to the Spelling Bee.

Yeah, this room seems symbolic about Kris, doesn’t it?

Only... I’m not actually sure this room being this way is why we think it is. As we learn more about Kris it becomes clear that Kris isn’t some blank slate we pilot, but someone who does in fact have interests and hobbies and all that jazz, as any teenager should. Nor is Kris actually being neglected by their family- the ‘bad’ controller is used by Asriel rather than Kris. Kris is in fact greatly loved by their family, from what we see. So why is none of that reflected in their half of the room?

I think Kris’ half isn’t like this because Kris is completely unaccomplished and lacking in things they like. I think, at one point in the past, Kris’ corner was every bit as decorated as Azzy’s... and then, for whatever reason, Kris willingly decided to just get rid of it all, and chooses to live this way for reasons that we can guess at, but will probably become clear the further along we go.

Why do I think this? Because whatever their failings as people, I have an incredibly hard time believing that Toriel OR Asgore are so negligent and oblivious that they’d allow a set up like this to persist unless it was by Kris’ own choice. I could be wrong, mind you, and I do believe that Kris’ parents are at some level unwilling to confront that Kris has problems... but I don’t think that even with that caveat that either of them is so utterly incompetent as to just allow one child to seemingly flaunt their accomplishments in front of the other like this.

And then there’s Azzy himself. We don’t know anything about how Asriel is in the present. So far the picture we have painted for us though indicates that he is in fact a good guy who cares deeply for his sibling (as well as being a colossal dork at odds with the kind of Golden Boy that the rest of the town has constructed him to be). So on that front, it seems incredibly unlikely that Asriel would make his half of the room the way it is given how it’d look for Kris. And even if the truth is that Asriel is in fact a horrible asshole (which strikes me as unlikely-but-possible), then it comes back to Asgore and Toriel not allowing this even if Asriel was covering up his actual bad intentions.

Therefore? My conclusion is that Kris, for whatever reason, has gotten rid of all the things that defined THEIR half of the room, and is choosing to live this weird, miserable existence that we see them living. Why they’re doing this, as with everything else, is open to heavy interpretation. My own suspicions range from them doing it out of sheer self-loathing, to them deliberately doing it to hide the details of their life from Us, the Player... there’s a lot going on here that indicates things with Kris go far beyond what We see, and they are privy to thinks that We aren’t. But either way, their corner being the way it is? Is due entirely to their own choice, and Toriel is simply permitting it even though its not a healthy thing for Kris to be doing at all.

In the end we’ll only know once the rest of this game is finally released (and God I hope that’s soon you seriously have no idea), but for now? I choose to believe that Kris’ life isn’t as barren as this room would indicate... they simply, for whatever reason, are unwilling to share that life with others at this point, either due to the events of the past or due to not wanting Us to see.

... I also like to think that, if this is true, Toriel is storing all of Kris’ things in the attic in the hopes that one day they’ll want it back. That however is less textual based and more Realm Of Pure Headcanon, heh.

Asriel, Biblical References, and his character arc

One of the things I've appreciated the most about Undertale since first playing it is Asriel/Flowey's character. But while our favorite goat-flower child is understandably one of the more popular characters in the Foxverse, one aspect of his character I don't see discussed as much are the Biblical references and potential allegory related to him. And, while I do see references to his redemption arc on occasion, I don't believe it's given the light that it deserves. So today, I just wanna talk a little bit about Asriel "Flowey" Dreemurr and the depth given to his arc in Undertale.

The first name, "Asriel," can be connected back to the Hebrew name "Azriel." This name, first and foremost, means "God is my help." The reason why this works so well for his character is that he resurrected as Flowey. While it's certainly due to the DETERMINATION injections, Asriel being given a second chance at life through arguably miraculous circumstances gives his name origin all the more meaning. I understand that his name can also mean "Angel of Death" if one were to observe the Islamic and some Jewish beliefs. Considering Asriel's strongest form in the final battle, it would make sense on that note. However, as a Christian myself, the rendering of "God is my help" not only connects with me on a personal level far more, but I also believe is more poignant in regard to his arc. This is due to the grace given to him and an opportunity to still be redeemed even with all he did in his Flowey form (and hyperdeath and death angel forms as well). This links into my favorite part of Asriel's character: his redemption arc.

Despite all Asriel did, he still broke the barrier and freed all monsterkind. Not only that, but he made friends with Frisk and the soon-to-be ambassador of monsters comforts and forgives Asriel. We also see where Asriel vows to keep his promise of not killing people anymore ("don't kill and don't be killed"), and considering how Asriel/Flowey is kind again at game reopen, we have full confidence that his redemption arc is here to stay. I've also explained before that since true pacifist is open-ended, and considering how much Frisk loves and cares for the monsters as ambassador, it's only a matter of time until Asriel gets his real body back or at the very least settles in with Toriel again. It's left open to interpretation but still hopeful, given how Frisk isn't the kind of kid to forget about friends or loved ones. But in any event, Asriel's redemption arc is by far my favorite character arc in the game. The reason why this is so sweet to me is that it reminds us that anybody can be redeemed. No matter what someone's past is, they can still be redeemed and be better.

On the redemption arc note, while people have connected Asriel to Christ-like references (with the barrier-breaking and fulfilling the prophecy of letting all monsters be free, the "Angel" mentioned in the prophecy possibly being a label inspired from Christ being the "Angel of the Lord" in Scripture), or on the other hand, Satan-like references due to him being Flowey (a fallen being who was good but then turned evil), I don't think either comparison quite lines up. While I *do* understand why people make said comparisons to either Biblical figure, I don't think either figure is the best choice for a Biblical figure reference. If you ask me, the Biblical figure Asriel most squarely aligns with is actually the apostle Paul. Here's why: -Both are known for committing murder multiple times. -Both have nicknames or alternate names used when they were at their lowest point (Asriel went by the nickname "Flowey", while Paul used to go by "Saul"). -Despite their past, they're still given a chance to be redeemed. -Both end up being redeemed in the end and enter a new phase of life where they're finally on the right track, no longer being vengeful or blood-thirsty like they used to be. While it's definitely not a perfect analogy, I personally like to use these thoughts as a reference to how anyone can be redeemed. Even the lowest of the low can be redeemed, which is a fundamental aspect of why I not only write Christian allegory and references in my own works, but also because it's a hopeful message.

I feel like I did some of these guys dirty and kind of regret their placements, and I’m sure there are villains/antagonists I am forgetting about.... but these are the names that jumped to my mind in the last few minutes while sitting down to type this out. I’m very tempted to add Queen (Deltarune), Lord Zedd (Power Rangers), and Zamasu/Goku Black (Dragon Ball), but I dunno, something held me back and I’m not quite sure where they’d all fall on here.

When the Khahalita were first graced by the arrival of the Empress their technology was... primitive. Barely able to reach their own moons, let alone the other worlds in their system, there was precious little they could do to stop her. Pink waltzed through their amassed forces alone and unsupported like they weren't even there, unfazed by the resistance offered. To the Khahalita she was like a god, and with the enforced subjugation of their world she may as well have been. With the generations, their world prospered, even if liberties and pride were sacrificed for it, and the truth degraded into myth as deification crept in. The 'Silicate Pantheon' as it became known eventually encompassed every city on every continent of theplanet, and several post-conquest Khahalita colonies, such as the domain of one Wharla Marquessa and her demigod daughters. Prayers were collected and codified, rites were invented and passed down, and doctrine was carefully written under the watchful eye of their Angel of Death, Prime Minister Asriel. Exerpts have been provided below:

"Hail to thee, Angel of Death, tongue sharp as your blades, insight unmatched and will indomitable. Our foes are innumerable and our forces are helpless; lend us your wit, your charisma, your magnificence, that we may divide our enemy amongst itself, and thus be spared their wrath. Protect us, your loyal acolytes, that we live to return the favour that day you call upon us." - Prayer to Asriel Dreemurr, seeking to collapse a contentious enemy coalition.

"Praise be to the Lord of War, patron of army and soldier, wise master of strategy and victory of armaments. Guide not our shells and blades but our manoeuvres and our plans. Lend us your supreme excellence in the art and science of conflict, that we may deliver unto you and your pantheon final victory over our foes." - Prayer to Yellow Diamond, seeking to boost the capabilities of the general staff.

"All hail the Pink Empress! Unquestionable force of nature! Ruler of all things! Tyrant and liberator at once, such is your power to straddle, to defy definition! We beseech thine mercy on the souls of those of us who saw fit to transgress against you, who knew not the magnitude of their crimes and fell afoul of evil tongues and thoughts. We plead you take heed of the Angel's word and show mercy, that we may correct our failings and atone our sins lest we suffer your irresistible wrath." Prayer to Empress Pink Diamond, begging for mercy for a supposed unspecified wrongdoing.

The culture shock involved has been intensively studied by scholars empire-wide, especially those extracted from the Blue Diamond's essence, the latter having found her way into the Silicate Pantheon generations later as a minor 'Moon Goddess' to the mild confusion of the government.

Meanwhile (rather a couple minutes before now) at the Dalv mansion, the fight is concluding. Jackie and Asriel have successfully disarmed Layla; unfortunately it led to Jackie being shot several times with silver bullets. Heavily weakening him.

Layla is dodging around the area turning into mist and bats occasionally. She is slightly wounded by Asriel's fire, but still evading. “It’s funny how useless you two are. Both incapable of taking down an unarmed woman, pathetic.” She taunts.

Asriel roars in response. Jackie growls.

Layla laughs, turning to face Asriel. “So you want it that bad? Alright, eat this!” Layla charges at Asriel at top speed (like 120 meters per second), claws extended preparing to slash.

But suddenly as she gets close, Asriel grabs her by the face and slams her into the ground. On impact the stone ground is cracked heavily, Asriel creates a powerful explosion of fire, directly on her face from his hand. Layla screams. All of this doing immense damage to her. Asriel finally throws her against a wall.

Layla, heavily wounded lets out another yelp in pain.

Asriel charges her, summoning a bright red, magic saber in his hand and thrusting it into the right side of Layla's chest.

Layla once again screams in pain, finally speaking. “Stop! Stop! Please, stop! I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”

“Oh, NOW you’re sorry?” Asriel bites back. “No, you’re just saying that to save your own skin.” Asriel brings himself closer to her, making eye contact, giving her the most terrifying look imaginable. “Now, you’re going to give me a good explanation for your actions, if you don’t do that, well… I’ll just twist my sword ninety degrees so that it pierces your heart. You will also apologize to Chara personally, and if you don’t, I’ll just tell my father. I bet he’d love to meet the gal who attempted to murder his son.”

“Okay, okay, I understand, Mister Prince.” Layla says almost mockingly. “I’m sor-“

“Oh, no. You shouldn’t be calling me that name. You should address me as his highness Asriel fucking Dreemurr!” Asriel yells as he kicks Layla in the head hard enough that it cracks the stone wall behind her.

Jackie pulls himself up, and walks over to the two, looking at Layla. “Man, Layla- I knew you were dumb, but dear lord: insulting the man who’s mere centimeters from killing you? Who’s also happens to be the Prince. Really?”

Asriel looks to Jackie, chuckling. “Yeah, she’s about as intelligent as a bag of hammers, has the common sense of a box of nails, and the personality of a wood plank.” He looks back to Layla. “Now, that explanation…”
