Non-sequitura Disney in-depth analysis (after making a tier list)

Warning: SUPER longform. If you don’t know a movie well, you should skip the summary. I tried to be light on spoilers, but they’re there.

I went chronologically from favorite to least favorite. So S tier is, in order from fave to least fave, The Incredibles, WALL-E, then Zootopia.

S tier (Something I consider high quality AND a movie I greatly enjoy. I would love more Disney movies be like this.)

The Incredibles - one of my favorite movies of all time, possibly THE favorite. Rockin social commentary, epic action scenes, memorable characters, not a minute of screentime wasted, great take on the Fantastic Four, hilarious parts for both adults and children, an interesting villain, etc. 

WALL-E - I love how social commentary was done here. Also skies above, what a beautiful love story. Really blazed a trail in non-verbal storytelling (especially given it was an animated kids film!) Robot animations are particularly delightful. 

Zootopia - another social message delivered excellently and entertainingly. I love Judy and her persistence, I love the expressiveness of the faces and the epic city setting. I love Judy and Nick's banter. This movie deserves to be remembered longer than it has been so far. Admittedly, not one of my fave villains, which makes it my least favorite of the Ss. 

A tier (either super high quality or something I greatly enjoy and deem of at least reasonably good quality)

Mulan - this movie did everything right. Truly feminist protagonist, an icon for strong Asian women, fairly culturally accurate (tho Mushu confuses me), GORGEOUS and iconic music. Lets a relatively natural romance develop. I frickin love the action scenes, I love the emporer. Sadly, this movie just didn't lodge its way in my heart as well as Pixar did. Pixar just has some magic, yo. 

Cinderella - my gosh what an underrated protagonist. Her family straight-up abuses her and she never loses sight of her goals for a better life. Iconic visuals helped bring Disney out of bankruptcy. A gorgeous alto singing voice. 

Wreck-it Ralph - alright alright ppl don’t crucify me for this. I honestly can’t think of much wrong with this movie. Vanellope and Ralph’s vitriolic best buds relationship is adorable, her forgiveness of him is heartwarming and (relatively) deserved, rockin’ Owl City song, epic visuals that mix together bc of all the different games. ALSO ONE OF THE BEST DISNEY VILLAINS NO CAP. One of the only twist villains I like. And we stan the romantic pairing. 

Tangled - I’ve talked about this a lot, but Rapunzel deserved the whole world after what she’s gone through. That being said, Gothel is not some shallow monster she needs to escape from, but an intelligent, well-defined monster with backstory. I could totally see this story happening if the world of Tangled existed. Epic love story, hilarious dialogue. Music is… good but much of it is less memorable to me. Visuals are good but not quite at the level/creativity of many other disney films. 

The Lion King - they really put Hamlet in Africa and pulled it off lol. But in all seriousness, no one took the premise of this film seriously at the time and it became sooo iconic. I love Scar and his eventual downfall, I love how Simba grows emotionally, I love the sad moments that don’t overpower the overall feeling of light goofiness. And music so memorable it was one of the first Disney musicals. 

Coco - not a super unique story premise. But an incredible culture to explore with such creativity and sensitivity. I love the themes of death not being the worst and music being so central to the story. Twist/twist villain was memorable and not expected. And yeah, it did make me cry, so props there. 

Ratatouille - the most recently watched of these films for me. This movie is soooo unique! Back when Pixar was truly super out there with their concepts. Super Parisian visuals and soundtrack. It somehow starts goofy (THE OLD LADY TRIES TO KILL REMY WITH A SHOTGUN WHILE WEARING A GAS MASK) but really drives home the message that you can truly do what you want regardless of who you are. Colette can get it. And the monologue by Ego at the end is one of my favorites in film. 

Frozen - Anna is one of my favorite Disney protagonists. She’s so resilient and loyal. Elsa ain’t bad either but she experiences… less character development. The film is a tad too pleased with its own self-awareness for my taste, but there’s no denying how iconic the music and visuals were. 

Inside Out - Alright, this movie hits home for me bc I tried to run away after moving. A super thoughtful, heartfelt depiction of (potentially depression? imo) with great moments of humor. Riley’s inner world is so creative and lovely. Also realistic depictions of Minnesota/California culture. 

Tarzan - Jane! is! smart! and! adorable! Her scientific curiosity makes her very endearing. it’s so cute to see her and Tarzan learn from each other. Also Tarzan’s “found mother” is epic. Solid score. Solid film all around. To quote Lily Orchard, “This film is what Pocahontas tried to be.” 

B tier (one of my favorites but has a few significant flaws that bring it down (or not quite as memorable to me, but consider good quality))

Peter Pan - Haven’t seen it in a hot sec, but I remember being super charmed by this as a kid. Just going out, having incredible adventures, and returning to a warm home at the end of the day. Tinker Bell is hilarious and beautifully drawn. Gets major negative points for the depiction of Native Americans tho. 

Big Hero 6 - I was super charmed by the protagonist, his family/friends, and the setting. The plot/villain’s motivations are a bit of a mess, though. 

Princess and the Frog - This movie has so much flavor to it! The visuals/music are lovely and unique. Tiana is incredible but it’s kinda annoying how EVERYONE keeps trying to shoehorn her into romance. The thing is, her goals are entirely reasonable. Focus on her restaurant, then look to settle down. But they’re like “nooo you’re ignoring the important things in life” smh. Also, epic villain, woohoo! The movie dragged significantly for me when they were in the bayou. Charlotte is delightful. 

Winnie the Pooh - don’t remember it super well, but I think it was charming and occasionally dark, which is an addictive concoction. 

The Little Mermaid - MAN ppl roast Ariel way more than she deserves. Visually, it was… fine. idk. This movie is good. I don’t have much else to say about it. 

Snow White - the one that started it all. Visually, super impressive. Musically, lovely. I find the romance a bit… off. Well, more than a bit. What is it with Disney and kissing sleeping people? 

Alice in Wonderland - a nerdy acid trip. Right up my alley! I also like films where ppl go on incredible adventures and return to the status quo, but THEY changed bc of it. Epic. SUUUUPER creative visual interpretation of Carroll’s book. Brave - gosh I loooove films where a parent and child learn to understand each other. Never got why ppl hated this movie so much. The Scottish flavor is present and fun. Merida made one mistake and made it up. The arrow scene is iconic. 

Cars - a fun ride! (hahaha puns.) We love seeing Paul Newman as a car. 

B-minus tier? (same as B, but problematic, or weaker story-wise.)

Hunchback - man… settings-wise, this film might be my favorite. I also love Esmeralda and Quasimodo as characters and as a duo (though the sexualized depiction of Romani ppl is not epic.) I also don’t find the discrimination against Esmeralda/Quasimodo jarring bc it matches the time period. Frollo is super interesting as a villain. The gargoyles are… def not necessary. Basically, this film doesn’t know what it’s doing with tone. 

Sleeping Beauty - Aurora was my favorite when I was younger because I thought she was the prettiest, and that still defines how i feel about this, basically. Visually lovely - everything is kind of elongated and gothic. Maleficent is spiteful and epic. I have no issue with the fluffier parts of the movie, like the music or the fairies. RIP for lack of consent being a plot point, though. 

Hercules - Megara is incredible. one of the only Disney “princesses” who acts like an adult and has cynicism as a major part of her personality. I love her and Herc’s progression where she learns to trust him (yes, he is genuinely that sincere, it’s not a front.) Muses are unique, whoever came up with them was high on something and I’m living for it. I just think the plot itself was somewhat unrealistic/ weirdly-paced. There are some memorable songs, some less-than-memorable songs. Art style is cool but I’m personally not a fan. EXTREMELY inaccurate depictions of the original Greek gods. 

C tier (entertaining, but I don't consider it a great movie)

Bolt - I watched this like 11 years ago. It was fun! A cool concept about those put on a pedestal learning their worth even without celebrity boosting them up. Animation was… fine I think. not super memorable to me. 

Frozen 2 - They really took any scrap of character development Elsa had in the first movie, threw it in the garbage and set it on fire. Anna deserved so much better. Songs are bombastic and impressive, have the occasional interesting lyric, but are really weirdly placed and none are quite as iconic as the first movie’s (except Aurora, she does great work here. Also the song Anna sings after she thinks Elsa died.) 

Not a big fan of the vaguely homeopathic theme. Not a big fan of Olaf’s WEIRD character development. Not a big fan of the suuuuuper awkward dialogue and the animations that imply not only that Kristoff is into his reindeer but that Elsa and Anna are into each other (if you’re questioning if they did that, yes, they did, I can find screenshots of some really weird expressions/moments. THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO PANDER TO YOUR WEIRD FANS, DISNEY.) 

The voice actors did great work, the animators did great work (look at the details on their clothes! Look at how Elsa’s posture changes to be more confident! look at how they're animated while they're singing!) Some weird costume/makeup choices that make Elsa look like an aging starlet, but she also has some gorgeous moments so eh. It’s a wash for me. 

They really did not know what to do with Kristoff this movie, huh. The only thing that happened to him was singing a cheesy 90s ballad and marrying Anna, both of which were admittedly epic. Also, the trolls got 0 appearances despite being literally psychic. Probably could have helped with a lot. I'm not a huge fan of lore/worldbuilding, and thee was a lot of it here. Overall neutral on it. 

Also a big theme in this movie I don’t love - **** TANGIBLE CONSEQUENCES TO OUR ACTIONS!!! The danger is Elsa’s death, the elements, colonialism, and Arendelle literally being destroyed. None of those end up playing out, so I was left at the end going “this film had literally no stakes.” 

Monsters U - same as above - entertaining at the time! Not super memorable. The ppl we were supposed to dislike kept switching. Doesn’t really match the canon of Monsters Inc (I thought they were supposed to have known each other since childhood so why did they meet in college?) 

Cars 3 - so apparently, everyone HATED this movie! Fun! I never watched Cars 2 (yes watched Cars 1 if you haven’t been paying attention to this list), but I didn’t think this movie was bad at all. Well-acted, some fun chase scenes, the scene where Lightning fails at driving in the simulation is genuinely hilarious, and some interesting perspectives on teachers getting the spotlight for their skills for once. 

Incredibles 2 - I liked this film at first, but then it was… just okay in retrospect. I love me some good family dynamics. The plot here makes not a lot of sense. THEY BUILT UP THE UNDERMINER FOR NOTHING AND THEN FORGOT ABOUT HIM. I was surprised by the villain swap, but it happened so last minute I never really understood their motivations even after they explained them. Tried to tackle waaaay too many messages. 

D tier (I didn't enjoy these or consider them mediocre)

Finding Dory - Maybe I should have put this higher? Like C tier at least. Ah well. Wasn’t a huge fan of the body/physical comedy (not my thing), but it was entertaining and awww finding family is heartwarming. 

Finding Nemo - I remember nothing about this movie. 

E tier (this film has significant problems)

Beauty and the Beast - *sigh*… I want to love this movie. The score is gorgeous. Visually, they could have made it more distinctly Rococo-era France but didn’t (why?) The voice actors did good work and I think Paige O’Hara is SUPER underrated here. 

The Beast is emotionally manipulative with an awful temper that (for MOST of the movie. He doesn’t change.) That’s the main reason this is in E tier. This movie shaped so many generations of people thinking they can change the behavior of someone who treats them badly through the power of love. But you can’t. She learns to “love” the beast under coercion. It’s not Stockholm syndrome - it’s a trashy romance novel. Big fan of Gaston as a villain. He’s an archetype ppl can recognize and it’s so satisfying to hate him.

F tier (I think this film actively harms the industry and would rather it not have been made. Both the one in E tier could be considered harmful to the industry, but I think they had significant enough artistic accomplishments to scrape above that. I'm also generally a fan of "lack of censorship bc it's better to teach what not to do.")

Pocahontas - this movie took real historical events and romanticized them AND sexualized one of the only Native princesses they’ve had. Boo. Nothing wrong with animation!Pocahontas as a character, it’s just people put her in a story that doesn’t represent history well at all (and these historical events, unlike those in say, 14th-century Germany, had super relevant effects on people alive today.) And they portrayed the Native Americans and colonial settlers as equally in the wrong. (though I like Governor Radcliffe as a potential villain and love the line “see how I glitter.” I can’t NOT laugh when I hear it.) Lovely music, though. Nice animation, but the colors are weirdly… muted? 

Bad Garbage (I don't wish this film had never been made, but I wish I never had to see it.)

Planes - this movie was ridiculous. I remember not much about it except that I kinda hated it and that it was super cheesy with tension one could see right through that immediately resolved itself via one twist or another. 

Haven’t seen tier: Recess, A Bug’s Life, A Goofy Movie, DuckTakes Movie, Lilo and Stitch, Pinocchio (actually i have seen this but I remember nothing about it), The Nightmare before Christmas, Toy Stories 1, 2, and 3, Up, 101 Dalmatians, The Great Mouse Detective, Cars 2, Moana, The Good Dinosaur, Pete’s Dragon, Fantasia, Peter Pan Return to Neverland, Fantasia 2000, The Black Cauldron (read the book, though!), Bambi (or I did and remember nothing about it), The Rescuersm, The Rescuers Down Under, Planes Fire and Rescue, Bambi 2, The Fox & the Found, Oliver and Company, Atlantis, Treasure Planet (I want to, though), Piglet’s Big Movie, The Jungle Book, the Emporer’s New Groove, The Jungle Book 2, Chicken Little, Brother Bear, The Three Caballeros, Pooh’s Heffalump Movie, Dumbo, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, Aladdin (seen parts but never the whole thing), Strange Magic, The Sword in the Stone, James and the Giant Peach, Frankenweenie, Lady and the Tramp, Ralph Breaks the Internet, Doug’s 1st Movie, Monsters Inc. oh I'll give u a character alright: Izuki, Kiyoshi, Riko and Aomine <333 technically that's four, but what goes around comes around (I'll keep this circle of love goin forever buddy)

Izuki

Why I like them: izuki’s just overall so amazing! he inspires me to give my best in the stuff i do, and although it sounds a bit silly i try to be a person that he’d be proud of. his puns are hilarious and well-thought-out (as a person who loves words and word jokes, i’m naturally drawn to him lol). they’re also a way to take the heat off the team, he’s so hardworking and never views obstacles as obstacles, rather as hills he must climb to find newer skies. he’s also rather clever and employs his brains to great effect when his body fails him! izuki embodies the meaning of ‘eagle’ in the truest sense - waiting to strike when the time is right and not failing when it is.

Why I don’t: *sweats* can’t really think of a reason i don’t like izuki, at all??? i guess he can overwork himself a lot and tends to keep his true emotions hidden which could lead to misunderstandings between friends (although this is totally headcanon territory lol)... i also didn’t like the ableist comment he passed on hayama (“i’m just glad you weren’t smarter than me”). but i think he can (and will!) grow from that kind of stuff, he is that kind of person so yeah no particular reason for me to dislike him at all

Favorite episode (scene if movie): how dare you make me pick s3 e8 izuki vs kasamatsu, hands down. i know its like cliche or whatever but that moment just told me so much about izuki as a character? he’s willing to do what it takes to win, he’s adaptable and dependable and he doesn’t let shit get him down ever. it’s gorgeous

Favorite season/movie: s3, he got some fantastic moments in there!! although i will say i loved the spotlighting he got in s1 in the seihō match

Favorite line: “Fear isn't a bad thing. There are some things that can only be done by cowards.” this is first of all such a nice thing to say. ‘fear is not bad’ is just... so fucking wise? keep in mind that this boy is 17, i’ve met 30 year olds who are less mature. secondly it feels like izu’s speaking from experience?? like he has a lot to be scared of, i’m sure. particularly of falling behind and being a burden to his teammates. but it’s that ‘cowardice’ that drives him to practice so so hard. that visceral terror of weighing on seirin is what pushes izuki beyond his limits - which is why here he can empathise with furi’s fear, and knows how best to employ it.

Favorite outfit: look i hate last game w/ a passion but that lil tie/shirt/hoodie thing he had going? that was literally so cute. izuki in general has a p great fashion sense but his last game outfit takes the cake <3

OTP: hyuuizu oh my god i could talk for years about them but since this post is gonna be very long i’ll refrain. just. they are perfect they are fucking perfect

Brotp: kiyoizu!! kiyoshi is izuki’s biggest enabler and i love that for him <3

Head Canon: izuki can be very very passive aggressive when he’s angry at someone/sad and gets cold and withdrawn. it’s not fun to experience but tbh if you upset him you probably deserve it

Unpopular opinion: izuki should’ve been naturally better in canon. it’s not fair to shaft him and give the ‘trier’ thing off to himuro. that being said i am p happy with who he is as a person

A wish: i want to know how izuki felt after middle school! izuki’s and riko’s backstory focuses so much on hyuuga its dumb >:( he also would’ve been demoralised but he didn’t quit bball and i would like to know his thought process!

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: i. uh. i guess izu quitting basketball. because i genuinely cannot see that happening. it brings him so much joy, he should never stop cold turkey. i can imagine old man izuki hobbling about a court giving little kids pointers and making them laugh T-T

Kiyoshi

Why I like them: lots of reasons! kiyoshi is an admirable person. he’s strong, yet friendly and gentle, and he loves his team above all else, which i just find beautiful. i find his manipulative side also pretty cool, bc it shows off how multifaceted he is.

Why I don’t: this is more of a fandom reason but i really dislike how kiyoshi is always said to have had the greatest impact in hyuuga’s story. he badgered and manipulated hyuuga, and while some may argue hyuuga needed that push, it only worked bc hyuuga had had time to think about shit. he’d also been given space by riko and izuki (two integral parts of his life whom the fandom looooves to sideline for uwu kiyo//hyuu). 

Favorite episode (scene if movie): yousen match (can’t pick the episodes)! i loved the backstory we got for kiyo vs mura and i loved how kiyoshi was willing to smile and play but also refused to lose. he truly stole the show despite kagami being the one to finally take down murasakibara, it was gorgeous <3

Favorite line: “Let’s go have some fun.” i know it’s kinda cliche but i do love how kiyoshi’s always thinking about playing a good game and enjoying basketball. he wants to play because he loves it and as someone who loves a sport as much as kiyoshi loves b-ball, that love is so poignant and tender

Why I like them: im a lesbian, next. /j i love her because she’s so tenacious and driven. yet she’s also kind and gentle, and never loses her humanity. she cares, and she cares hard. she’s so fucking smart too like... coaching a hs basketball team at 17 against players of NBA calibre and making them win? i could never. seirin without riko is nothing.

Why I don’t: i dont like the constant slapstick of her beating up her boys. also, i dislike how the narrative forces her to act ‘feminine’ and then has the boys think of it as nothing. like first of all if someone like her offered me a kiss i would so take 100, and secondly... why is a girl’s worth so tied to her femininity? it’s awful

Favorite episode (scene if movie): her sending in furi vs kaijō, early in s3. it was an exceedingly smart move that could have only come from her knowing her players’ strengths and weaknesses intimately, and being a brilliant coach. just amazing <3

anyways i’m happy you say that bc i love my starbound babs so much;; there is a story behind them! i was thinking of making an ask/comic blog at some point but i haven’t really found the time yet… “orz

there are A LOT OF THINGS happening in my starbound uni. this isn’t all set in stone because i’m still doing some research and headcanon making and stuff, but this what i got so far;; if you’re interested, here’s a run down of my starbound uni under the cut !

my SB uni takes place after Earth’s destruction. b/c of the Protectorate’s reassuring presence in the galaxy, its disbandment caused a ripple of chaos. sectors suffer from shortage, a rise in criminal activity, and displacement. laws in space were already super flimsy and are still easily exploitable. although each sector functions almost like a country, interstellar politics are kinda screwy because space is huge. but basically, if you got money, charisma, and big guns, you’ve essentially got the power. 

the Protectorate’s fall gave rise to several criminal organizations, as well as strengthened the influence of the Blackstar Syndicate, a deadly all-novakid gang known for their shadowy connections and being extremely successful in their heists and killings. the amount of members BS has is unknown, but their presence has been causing rampant paranoia throughout the galaxy, even moreso with the Protectorate out of the way… BS’s presence has also caused some degree of discrimination against the novakid race (hence why novas are rare + lack of novakid Protectors)

at the same time, the Intergalactic Space Patrol is scrambling to pick up what the Law & Order division of the Protectorate left behind– on the bright side, the IGSP is getting a ton of funding, but it’s all really stressful because now everyone’s turning to them for protection. of course there’s other relief organizations + the USCM rising back to power w/ their human imperialism, Occasus being. Occasus. and Letheia being sus

that’s the background ! the main character is a flirty, pink-flared, heart-branded novakid named Apollo! who is that adorable drop of sunshine anyways?

without spoiling too much abt him, Apollo is a young space outlaw trying to lay low from Space Patrol and Blackstar, of course that doesn’t stop him from getting in trouble with local law. him and his crew do various odd jobs to support their frivolous lifestyles, from black market dealing with homemade drugs and weapons to working part time at space cafes.

the story doesn’t just revolve around polly though, there are other characters like his crew (x) (x), Opal Quartz, Sheriff Agnes and her partner Sheriff Weston Waylo (haven’t drawn), and characters that won’t be relevant for awhile like Professor Aphelion, Phoebe “Foxtrot” McCoy, and Strawberry (haven’t drawn those two either lmao;;)

Opal is a former glitch princess/queen and Protector. she is a philanthropist, colonist, teacher, spokeswoman, and is very protective over Apollo, his crew, and her own. she loves stories, especially the Baron’s, and watching people grow as individuals. a lot of her backstory is really spoilery so i can’t so much abt her either….

Agnes on the other hand is ofc a crusty old dwarf star who works for the IGSP. she’s so old she doesn’t really remember her life as a main sequence star, but she has a fair amount of impressive accolades and photos that it’s no doubt that she was (or still is) one of the best law enforcers and snipers in the galaxy. recently she’s recruited a young man named Weston Waylo, the now former sheriff of her hometown, Copperwood. 

Weston comes from a long line of novakid sheriffs, and even has the signature star brand to prove it! but ever since Weston’s encounter with some nosy hylotl journalists, Copperwood’s been gaining popularity as a spot for space tourists, and he’s been subtly begging Agnes to join the Space Patrol. she eventually lets him “just to see how long he’d last out in space” and appoints his twin brother, Easton, to take his place as town sheriff. 

as for Blackstar well……… i'mma keep them as a mystery…

anyways yea that’s the story behind pollyverse!! it’s a giant mess! but i do have plans for a comic or an ask blog of some kind! just gotta find some timee ^.^;

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Is this... is this me posting my pull list? Is this me posting my pull list BEFORE Wednesday? How utterly unexpected! A few irl things have calmed down enough for me to attempt this again. Wish me luck.

Here’s my pull list for the week.

THE WICKED + THE DIVINE #28 - We all know how well ends of WicDiv arcs go at this point, right? RIGHT? Hahaha, this is fine. Everything's fine. It's fine. Shut up, it's fine. (Any mental clarity I have here is being spent on how fucking amazing the Elsa Charretier and Matt Wilson cover is because I’m actually obsessed. The issue’s amazing as usual, but that cover... man oh man. It’s gorgeous from a nerdy craft perspective with all its curving lines and its geometric color shapes. And also it doesn’t make me want to cry or rage, unlike certain actual issues of this very upsetting comic, so that’s another plus I guess? Just go look at it!)

WE(L)COME BACK vol. 2 - I love this comic! I mean, I LOOOOVE. This. Comic. It’s been approximately a million years since volume 1 came out and I can’t wait to make everyone read the second half. It’s where the reincarnated queer lady assassins’ forbidden love adventure really kicks up the feelings and there’s so much action. Also, issue 6 is in here and it was my favorite single issue comic of last year, hands down. PLUS, this volume includes my creepy old murder lady alter ego. It’s great! I love it! I miss it! Time to reread it!

WONDER WOMAN #20 - The Godwatch arc of Wonder Woman’s story has really felt like a mythological horror story and I’m super here for that! Bilquis Evely continues to be an incredible artist. I’m such a fan of how she draws Diana and everyone around her. I always grab WONDER WOMAN to read first on my Tuesdays because I know, I KNOW, it’s going to make me feel strong and good and excited.

RAT QUEENS #2 - The Queens are once again in a tight spot, this time with the added presence of their super unnecessary dude counterparts. Man, I love seeing these girls again! RAT QUEENS is back and ridiculous and violent and foul and fun.

DOCTOR APHRA #6 - Last issue was just betrayal after betrayal and... I kinda loved it. As I love everything about Aphra! The stakes are high, but the book still manages to feel like she and her dad are on a fun space adventure. I’m always here for my super amoral space girlfriend! <3

MOTOR CRUSH #5 - Who is the dude in the helmet? What’s actually up with Domino and the Crush? I feel like issue 4 is when I got real into the scifi plot of this book and I honestly can’t wait to see what’s going on. Domino, man. I worry about her!

THE COMPLETE PHONOGRAM - Oh... oh PHONOGRAM. This damn comic makes me feel called out in public every time I read it, mostly because it’s full of such utterly unlikable characters whose stories and magic and metaphor still feel like they explain a core part of me. It’s so annoying! I love this series and I already wrote a whole big emotional thing when the final issue of IMMATERIAL GIRL came out, so I’ll spare everyone here. What’s extra exciting about this hardcover is that it includes ALL THE B-SIDES! If you didn’t read the book as it was coming out in single issues you didn’t get the short stories with guest artists in the back of every issue. I love the B-Sides as much as I love the main stories, so getting them all in one place is a special thing. The hardcover is also the first time we’re seeing RUE BRITANNIA (the first arc) in full Matt Wilson colors. I have incredibly mixed feelings about this and am also brimming with excitement to see the choices he made. The previews look like it’s a real combination of his current coloring and some stylistic stuff that was happening when the book was originally drawn. I’m chomping at the bit to dig into the color choices in particular. PHONOGRAM! I LOVE IT!

Seek First The Kingdom - And All These Things Will Be Given To You

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.  Jas 1:17 NKJV Wow - yesterday my son saw these two promises manifested in his life once again.  I've mentioned it before, and this is another wonderful example of, how our Father cares about everything - even the little things that so many consider "not worthy" of prayer or a "waste of God's time".  He's answered prayed and un-officially-prayed requests of mine as seemingly insignificant as the desire for a professionally done haircut (vs an in-the-bathroom job!). My 13 year old son has been pouring himself and his heart into the tech ministry at our church.  He has spent countless hours learning, participating, and growing in this area that he so loves and enjoys.  Through it he seeks to display aspects of his heavenly Father, even when he doesn't realize this is what he is doing.  He has spent multiple hours at church, and even more at home, hours no one but I have seen. Because we homeschool (as directed for us to do by the Lord) he has has the opportunity to spend lots of time under the wing of some really great guys at church, learning and growing in all kinds of ways (too many to list here beyond tech stuff).  For me this is exciting to watch, and honestly, who wouldn't want their child to be learning what he loves in the environment of the church! Obviously, the more time he spends there the more I need to make sure we can get a hold of each other.  For awhile now, he has been asking for an upgraded phone from my hand-me-down phone he has been using.  For probably over a year he has been looking up and looking into what phone he would like to have, and reminding me consistently about his request.  For awhile I determined he didn't need an upgraded phone, but the more he got into photography I decided it would be great to be able to give him one with a better camera.  At Christmas, his grandfather gifted him with a nice DSLR camera he had wanted, and he carries it with him everywhere!  So again, I figured he had the camera thing covered.  Then the glass on the back of the phone broke.  We peeled off broken pieces and covered the rest with tape.  I was not in a position to be able to buy him a new phone.  Then the front broke.  We covered it with tape.  I broke some more.  More tape.  It stopped ringing at times (frustrated me to no end when trying to call him).  The phone needed to be replaced.  I decided for his birthday I definitely needed to get him a new phone!  Instead, he broke his arm and all b-day gifts went into x-rays, bone re-settings, casts, doc appointments, more casts, more doc appointments....  No phone. Over the past two weeks he has been pouring himself into the tech ministry at church.  He spent countless hours programming lights and making tech plans and preparations for the upcoming VBS and middle school missions week at church.  Because of the faith his mentor has in him, he was put in charge of the recap video for the middle schoolers.  So not only did he participate in the middle school missions during camp, he also took on the responsibility to film parts of the week!  After a long, tiring week, he spent the entire next day not only putting together the recap video he was responsible for, but also pulling together a second surprise video for the tech team! He was pouring himself into serving others through his gifts and talents, to support the Kingdom of God. Yesterday, he was blessed with the manifestation of our Father's promises.  One of the church leaders

somehow saw the condition of his phone during the past week, and blessed him with an upgraded, non-broken, phone!  One in perfect condition which he could use right away, same carrier and all (yes, of course we have to get a new SIM card).  While he was seeking the kingdom, his Father was providing a good and perfect gift that he needed. Have you ever experienced this yourself? You probably have, and can think of when this has happened if you've kept your eyes opened to see the hand of God move in your life.  I know I have, many, many times myself.  When I am in need of or believing for something, big or insignificant, as I follow His directives and obey what He is telling me to do, even when it is completely unrelated to my need, He comes through and meets that need in a miraculous way!  He knows what we need, before we even need it, or know we need it!  The Lord even did that for me to cover the expenses of my son's broken arm, and the request for a manly b-day gift.  Two days before it occurred we suddenly sold a number of things on eBay.  I thought this was great, I could now give him a great fun b-day!  Those were my plans, not the Lord's plans.  The money raised covered exactly what I needed to pay for his multiple doctor appointments over the next few days, plus the ability to take him to a nice lunch each day after his appointments (remember, he is a growing boy!).  Because he was turning the 13, I had been praying that I could offer him an exciting, manly b-day gift, to usher him into his growing manhood.  Later, I learned that the broken arm, to my son, was the best manly ushering in he could get. WHAAAAT??? you ask... Yes, it was.  Of course as a mom I was heartbroken at first, because the big plan for him was to ride in a serious downhill mountain biking race that weekend, on his b-day.  It was going to be tough and dangerous.  Honestly, I was a little afraid of what could happen, as he was going to be the youngest to ever compete on that course.  But he wanted to do it, after lots of consideration, he wanted to see if he had what it would take.  A few weeks later, I was telling my son how much I respected him for how he had been handling his arm, from the moment it was broken until then, as well as the disappointment of not being able to race, not being able to even bike, and the challenges of doing tech with a broken arm!  While we were discussing this, he said he had always wondered if he had what it takes to get through something like this.... the pain... the challenges... the limitations...  I knew this hit to the core of the maturing young man in his heart - something I've learned while reading the Wild at Heart series material by John Eckhart.  But I digress, back to the original purpose of this post, this story is for another post..... but is an example of our Father's timely provision of finances as well as a gift to my son that he is cherishing in his heart. Anywho...  Some may shrug this off as no big deal and insignificant.  Who cares, someone gave him a phone.  But it's not.  It is a big deal.  It is a big deal to him and to me.  Even this seemingly little gift.  It was an answer to his prayers and need, and to mine!  As I support him in maturing, growing, and being able to do his thing, I need to know I can get a hold of him when I need to, and that he has a camera he can use at any moment.  In his world it is a BIG gift.  One that could have easily been blown off as an expectation to be received from me.  But one that can't be ignored when given to him from someone else.  A gift from that someone else that they may have no idea is that big a deal of a gift.  And we know that they will be blessed in multiplication in return for their selfless gift. But that's not all.... I experienced another answer to prayers last night.  Around here we loooove movies.  We wind down many days watching movies - good, clean movies, usually on PureFlix.com

.  We were watching the last two of a series on PureFlix last night to wind down the last day of a long week for the both of us.  When it came time to watch the third

movie in the series, around 10:30 pm, my son got up and said to me that instead of watching the next movie, he really wanted to go read his Bible.  I sat there stunned a bit, and was hesitating while processing this, and all I could muster was "Oh yeah?!? That's great."  He said yes, that is what he wanted to do, and that he realized he really needed to be reading more of his Bible more often.  WOW!  That is a huge answer to my prayers!  That his heart would be drawn to do this, without my pushing him to do so, which I know would make him not want to do it at all.  Instead, as he experienced more of the Kingdom and Love of God, his heart has been drawn more deeply into seeking it further.  Ultimately, this is what the promises of our Father in Heaven lead us to - the desire to seek a deeper, and more fulfilling relationship with Him.  Once we experience His love, His provision, His miracles, His gifts that we can't make happen on our own, that is when we are led to want to see these things more, not only in our lives but also in the lives of others. My son and I have been witnessing, and receiving love, blessings, and miracles like these for awhile now.  As I prayed years ago that the Lord would open my spiritual eyes to see, and my spiritual ears to hear, I began to notice and see not just the huge happenings, but also the small.  Not just the ones so big they hit you in the face, but the tiny ones that can so easily be overlooked.  And, not just the current ones, but ones that go back many, many years, before I was truly walking with and following Jesus.  All those years, He was by my side, guiding and directing, providing, loving, and more. You know, the best part about this - is that our Father looks to do the same for you.  If He does this for us, He wants to do the same and even more for YOU!!!  Open your heart to Him through Jesus, and as He promises He will lead the way.  He will lead you on your path, even when it doesn't look like it, feel like it, or smell like it.  When you can't feel your way, He will guide you.  We don't lean on our feelings, we lean on Jesus, the Word of God.  It IS true, it IS right, it IS never-failing, it IS eternal, it IS for every situation big or small, it IS the I AM.
