Continuation on Magpie "Carved and Modeled" subject

Okayyy so. Continuing on the subject tho we don't tag Magpie this time as he asked to. There are some people who seems to misunderstood why the review was made, and this post is for them.

Honestly we really toned everything down in this review comparing with our first reaction and tried to make sure what we say is on point. But yeah, sadly our emotions in the conclusion are true. We would actually be very disappointed if Philip’s backstory would be shown in canon this way, without any actually emotionally breaking events. It just didn’t feel like any of the characters cares about what happens around them. The circumstances Magpie placed don't look believable not even from a historical or canonical perspective, but from psychological perspective.

In our review we pointed out problems in narrative and characters' motivation, we didn't say a word about disagreeing with headcanons or how it was animated. We was talking about how the events were shown. And the point of questions we raised was not about how it was or was not in canon. Magpie implied to fix the canon and we described why it was not fixed at all. It was not about headcanons, it was about logic of the narrative.

For example we pointed out the lack of emotions from Philip's perspective. The story in album was covering his WHOLE LIFE and his most traumatic events where he was on his LOWEST. And like, critique wasn’t about faces and expressions alone it was about the whole picture in a storytelling sense! The story shows a very important part of his life but it seems like Magpie toned everything down, so none of the characters would look bad, and that made them look unbelievable.

We asked question "why Caleb never returned to Philip" not because we wanted him to come back, obviously he had to stay with Eve for the whole story to happen! The problem was in HOW Magpie staged his leave and didn’t show any HEAVY reasons why he couldn’t come back to Philip if he loved him so much. We can't understand the characters in this story, because their motivations are weak. And it's not the problem of different headcanons - it's bad writing.

Like, in reality, the only circumstance where Caleb COULD leave without feeling guilty is if Philip was a grown up person and not a child who Caleb had to take care for. And otherwise his motivation should have been shown to be much more strong.

Time, budged, all the effort Magpie put in the project ARE valid! We are not questioning it, we don’t say he didn’t animated enough or detailed something enough, we understand he was making this all solo. We are talking about his initial PLAN on WHAT and HOW he wanted to show. We didn’t even mention our headcanons in the essay - we only adviced an examples of solutions for the stated problems. We were talking only about what he did show and how it feels in a grand scheme. The issue wasn’t that he didn’t put enough effort, the issue is he made a scenario that doesn’t work and somehow, apparently, he didn’t get any critical feedback for it BEFORE starting to work on it. Because he didn’t ask, probably? To not lose motivation from critique. But that just led to the poor writing with a ton of work on it, which saddened us the most. He put SO MUCH effort and didn’t question himself once if he showed the characters right, if they actually feel alive in the story.

Our issue was that he made A HUGE THING in the fandom for a character we really care about, SPENT TWO YEARS ON IT and didn’t ask anyone for feedback once??? And it's not appropriate for a project that big and important for fandom representation to have such issues with narrative. It's not "just a little fan art" it's a thing that lots of people will see, not only from Philip's fandom. Like it wouldn't be a problem if it was just a comic on tumblr, but Magpie is a BIG creator in the community and because he made a big youtube video, that a lot more people will watch, it's weird how he don’t get how much power he has on his hands. At this moment he is basically our representation as a Belos fan.

And we are sad he didn’t ask anyone, not us, but ANYONE, who knows how to write, for feedback with his script. He didn’t examine it before putting in his effort. This is what disappointed us.

Like, with Philip's expression in the knife after murder, we have no issue with him keeping it in. As well as other frames from the show, we get that he wanted to stay as close to canon as possible but if he wanted to MAKE IT WORK he really had to brainstorm it with someone who also cares about the story, then it wouldn’t fall flat as it did in the end. The frames from the canon didn’t make sense in the narrative he made. And it looks like he doesn't see it for some reason? Lyrics he wrote don't match up with them at all, as well as scenes between the frames like one moment Philip is a menacing figure with BOO expression and in another he's already fine??? It looked like he wanted to PRANK Caleb or something and not like he was dangerous. The connection of the frames could make more sense if puting them in different order or making more context in between. It's just the problems in scenario you see?

Also maybe it would be better if he didn’t post THE WHOLE MUSICAL at once. It wouldn’t be so hard both on us and on him, if we saw all songs separately from each other and didn’t judge it as the BIG THING and one continuous story in the end. And if he got the feedback from fans in songs separately I believe it would be a lot more inspirational for him too. And easier for viewers to consume.

That's always the issue with big projects that you keep under the table for a really long time. To make it actually make sense and not be stuck in your head you need to ask feedback from your friends, and other creators - someone you believe is a good creator and is friendly with you.

And hence Magpie decided to make the story by himself, with such big words like “to cover holes in the canon”, we could not ignore the thing, because it happens to be very subjective. We needed to show our opinion to fandom too. There are much more accurate and viable interpretations of canon events, and we are sad that so much effort was put into weak scenario. That could be avoided, if Magpie collaborated with some experienced writers. But he didn’t. That's why we made a critique review. Someone should have point out the issues. And while he is an animator I think it's not that surprising someone told him he is not the best writer? There are not much people out there who does writing and drawing at the same level, that's why collaboration exist. We gave advices how the writing could have been improved, not only critisised it. And our point was complitelly ignored, the bad writing was called "headcanons" and all. That's it, let it be so, but there are some people who was afraid to say the same things, we described in review. And we made this post also for them to see it.

like every individual has all the right in the world to hate the game and loudly talk about how much they hate it, ofc. it's their blog. i love it beyond reason but not everyone does! and i'm not condemning any one person or anything

it's just sad to see at a broad, generalized level. for a lot of reasons, but the biggest for me is that this game was very intentional in its diversity and its messaging. and it really is a product of this moment; a deliberately queer, neurodivergent, diverse game published - in part - as a response to increasing fascism and rn transphobia in particular

idk. i guess the critiques and condemnations end up feeling a little... tactless to me

they aren't, i get that. again, everyone has the right to feel how they want and post what they want. it's just that it is such a big part of the "fan"base right now that it feels kinda inescapable. either ppl are posting critiques or they're posting responses to critiques (i am guilty of this too! it gets frustrating and the urge to vent and seek out like-minded ppl is Strong...) or ppl comment on your fucking positive posts with critiques

and again. it is fine. it is. my comment is only expressing disappointment at how wide-spread these sentiments are. but it can end up feeling like ppl are missing the forest to nitpick the trees

and it's not like tumblr is some super-secret clubhouse. anyone can search through common tags once they know what to look for. devs can - although they shouldn't, and i'd hope they'd know better than to go looking - but so can companies who are debating about the economic feasibility of adding in a more diverse cast. so can writers - professional or otherwise - who are debating about adding more diversity to their works. and they can see firsthand how the hammer comes down hard on more diverse media

it came out last halloween. that feels like a long time for haters to still be this active and involved, and a short time to have totally sailed past the inherent value of the game and its representation - coming from a triple-a studio, and from a dev team with multiple queer people on it

like. idk. i've never gotten into critiquing shit but is it really so important to share and post.... not to sound totally naive and childish, but can't we just not talk about games we aren't into? personally, i find that easy to do! idk! i'm happier not focusing on things that did disappoint me. most ppl don't even know media i dislike bc i have absolutely no desire to talk about it! ever!

and ik ik, critique is important. it's part of analysis. all that. i'm just tired. and i'm tired of the scale of it all, although i understand, logically, that the angriest voices are often the loudest and are disproportionately represented and not actually indicative of reality

i think the addiction language is making people a little uncomfortable because we're already on edge. there's been fandom homophobia, the show making a "turned gay" joke, buck not addressing his bisexuality in canon, and #letbuckfuck (which i personally don't think is biphobic i'm just... not a fan), plus people's personal interpretations of what the show has been doing. i don't think there's anything inherently wrong with using addiction as a metaphor, it's just that a lot of factors have been compounding and people are disappointed and feeling vulnerable about everything.

fwiw, my post was actually in response to a buddie post that was tagged as anti-bucktommy but i do get that people are feeling particularly touchy rn. (tho i did see other posts they just didn’t trigger my comment.)

i have my own opinions about the whole buck hasnt said bisexual and that’s Bad thing (i don’t think it’s bad, tbh, i think he still doesn’t have the word bc thus far it’s been Only Tommy and that’s part of the whole hes still got shit to figure out thing - speaking from experience as a 40 year old who came out late in life in my 30s and spent years trying to find the right words and half the time STILL doesn’t know it anything really fits) and i PERSONALLY feel uncomfortable with some of the talk about how if we thinks he’s still figuring shit out were infantilizing him or treating him like a child. sexuality is hard especially when you’re kind of feeling it out as you go and honestly labels aren’t everything. i get it people want the tangible representation but for some of us that IS a person who just kind of needs time to say the actual words and is still trying to figure it out. i do think he’ll get there though and maybe that’s Very Naive of me. but right now i think he’s only thinking about tommy - and honestly i think that’s kind of where he’s always been.

Well I guess it would depend on the kind of things you'd like to post and what you're looking for? If you want to share your creations and have a place to post it tumblr can be good because it's better with writing format, longer posts etc than other platforms which can be more centered on pictures/videos (such as twitter/insta etc). If you're writing fanfics, or anything based around a fandom the tagging system helps having more eyes on it if thats what you're looking for (though i'd still crosspost to a fanfic website too for that).

Noww if you're doing original content, still a good place pragmatically speaking but usually you're not going to have a lot of traction unless you already have some kind of built following and its not even sure. Thats just how it is, not that you have to care about that but some people do. If you're looking for peers, ideas, connections and so on you can search in popular writing tags for prompts, challenges, contests, theres blogs dedicated to that. (I also know some people like substack as a writing platform but I don't know much about it)

I've been posting poetry for some years on tumblr now so it's a platform that works for me (and you have the tumblr archives and tagging system that helps sorting your own posts out thats practical). If I was looking for traction and all, i'd be disappointed tho. So it really depends of what you have in mind. I made a sideblog for that so I could organize it better but to each their own.

If you were asking for more "I'm scared of sharing my stuff" kind of thing my tip is just... It's okay, just do it once and you'll see it's not a huge thing. If it's imperfect so be it, you'll progress. Theres nothing embarrassing about being genuine and sharing something you made. I've written a lot of embarrassing stuff very publicly and I survived, so can you lol. I hope I helped in any way? Tell me if you have more specific questions.

James Cameron is one of my favorite people!! He's so creative and such an inspiration when it comes creativity and storytelling cause Titanic has always been one of my favorite movies too (and that he was a part of creating Aliens and Alita: Battle Angel). But also how much he's contributed as a whole in terms of newer tech is so crazy. I'm like 99% confident that he helped develop his own submarine that he uses to deep sea dive and he pilots it himself, plus all the underwater filmmaking tech that he created and helped develop to film underwater scenes. He's just a genuinely cool dude.

(Except when he's killing off my favorite character in Avatar 2. That wasn't cool 😭)

Yessssss that's exactly what the drama is! I'm so glad you get it cause I'm so tired about hearing the same argument over and over and over again. Just let people read and write what they want - it's all fiction anyway. It's not real. People are responsible for their own media consumption. Writers can write what they want as long as they have the appropriate tags on it. If someone reads the tags and still reads or interacts anyway, that's on them. It was my mom's birthday last weekend and I wasn't able to go visit her. My stepdad's brother and his wife went up there for the long weekend though which is both fine and bad cause my mom adores her sister-in-law but my stepdad's brother is also a POS (everyone in their family is tbh) so having them over always drains her. Plus they always bring their two dogs which I think is very unfair because (1) my mom doesn't really like dogs and these ones are super rowdy and annoying (i like dogs don't, get me wrong, but...yikes), (2) my mom has two cats so they have to stay in her bedroom while the dogs get to run free which I think also isn't very fair, and (3) the dogs always end up using the bathroom inside the house every. single. time. and my mom is the one who ends up having to clean it. So they're there and she has to play "host". The brothers spent the whole weekend making jokes and comments at their wives expenses (you know, like assholes) and they didn't do anything special for her birthday. She had to tend to my stepdad and his family the entire weekend. Naturally, she was exhausted when they left and that same day my stepdad was already on her to clean the house. Like, fuck off.

AND THEN my mom has a special set up in her basement for the cats with tons of toys and shelves and other stuff that she made for them to play with or on. Apparently while my mom and her sister-in-law were out, someone let the dogs down in the basement and they marked their territory all over everything (if you get what I mean). Both methods of "marking their territory" were used and not a single thing down there was left un-destroyed or un-marked. She was furious and when she tried to rant about it to my stepdad, this motherfucker gets angry that she's "shit talking" his family and says "you better shut your mouth unless you want to start a fight". So she couldn't even be upset about it. And no, he didn't help clean it up.

[I'm not hating on the possibility of 2 main characters getting together; I'm just going by the text and subtext of what's on screen because that's what it's looked like for FOUR seasons (I know some of the theories bylers have for subtext and I disagree...I'm allowed)]. I'm not fantasizing about queer people being disappointed, bffr. I'm simply expressing an opinion as you have done, because that sub-fandom has been a very vocal, and active "mean-girl" group (to those who disagree with them and are purely just existing, so often posting in tags deliberately to hate on the 'rival' ship (I don't ship m*leven but I came across this with a ST post). [And I keep tagging these posts "anti-byler" because I'm not trying to upset someone's enjoyment in fiction; if you have not blacklisted posts discussing anti-byler; that's on YOU and sillier to get upset over someone sharing their mind over something that does not matter in the grand scheme of things in our world].

If you really wanna get deep in my hatred of byler (and why I'd find joy in it's fans being letdown), let's address how Noah Schnapp, the actor IS a zionist (and if you disagree (idc tho), still said something nasty in reference to children and people dying and was not ignorant at 19, profiting off of something being "sexy" for civilians and their pain. If I'm really talking about the habits of bylers and how they operate every time this ship is trending, and what they have said initially re: Noah Schnapp, I could talk about how I find it odd that no one wants to bring it up, and separation of the actor and character does not seem to be a thing, much more marked by Noah's coming out and people's relatability to a gay CHARACTER and a gay actor outshining their connection to morals (and the fandom of that ship, largely overlooks the actions of that actor, doesn't hold him accountable, accepted a half-assed apology, and like I said, sees the real person as well as their inspiration, much less doesn't care about his remained standing on the show, because they stay concerned about a ship, and supports his real life activities/behind-the-scenes pictures, friendship with his cast members, etc... (all for the unjustifiable explanation of finding it cute).

I'm not acting like a mean girl over people who enjoy gay ships. I'm not straight, either! And I don't like byler! (Do you like all "gay" (uhh, Mike is ???) ships because they are gay?) me "doing something productive" while you wrote ALL this getting mad over the initial post of something I said. I saw your post explaining why you love Leon Kennedy in the tags and you seem very knowledgeable about him! 💖 I’m newer to the fandom and I‘ve only played a few games but really like him as a character so far. This may sound silly but I see some people say he doesn’t have any character development and I was wondering if this is true? Since you seem knowledgeable about him I thought you would be a good person to ask to explain how he develops as a character throughout the games and movies? Don’t worry about including spoilers, I don’t mind!

like I told some other anon before, those people complaining about his characterization most often just hate him for the sake of hating him and nothing is good enough for them, so I wouldn't pay them a lot of attention tbh. considering RE as a whole, none of the characters gets super detailed and nuanced character arcs but saying Leon specifically doesn't get development is just plain wrong.

so, I'm not exactly sure which definition of "character development" you're referring to, because it can mean either the changes the character goes through as they go through the different plot points, or it can mean character getting more and more defined as more gets revealed about them throughout the story. so I'll just... ramble a bit about both?

so as for how Leon changes throughout the games/movies... this kinda depends on which version of him you want to consider canonical because the original-RE2 Leon was at least sassier than his remake counterpart :'D but like. he starts out as someone who respects authority maybe a tad too much, like in the remake he takes the side of the superior officer before he gets actual proof that there's something going on ("I'm sure he had his reasons" in the jail). but as time progresses he loses his faith in authority figures, bit by bit. he still plays (mostly) by the rules but like. the clearest example that comes to mind is in Damnation at the end when they're looking up at the sky and Leon comments on how they've been watched all the time. he sounds downright disappointed, and it's clear he's not as bright-eyed as he was years before. but well, it's not like he has much choice in what he does, he was blackmailed to take the job to begin with, so.

another noticeable thing about him is how he becomes more tired, and less optimistic about the future and how it'll turn out. in RE2 he's ready to take the bad guys down, says he'll do anything to help and vows to fix everything, and by Vendetta he says he feels like he's stuck in a loop with no way out because he has realized that fixing everything just is not a possibility in the real world. and it makes perfect sense. like, the more bad guys he takes down the more keep popping up, and it never ends. there's an endless supply of assholes who want to either make money or destroy the world or something in between, and Leon's stuck dealing with them all. that'd make about anyone tired. and it's visible in all the installations how he goes from thinking it's possible to right all wrongs (RE2, ID) to just trying his best to save anyone he can (Damnation, RE6 [tho it could be in part also righting a wrong as it is a revenge story]).

but still, despite how tired he gets, he still gets up and he still fights and he hasn't lost all hope. it's like. he seems to have more moments when he struggles to find the strength to go on but he always does, he always gets up and tries again. and it's one of the things I love about him. I know some people say that he's given up entirely by Vendetta, but I just can't agree with that. he has a moment of weakness, but when push comes to shove he does help, he does take the threat down (not alone, but y'know :'D), and if he'd lost all hope he wouldn't have even left with Chris. he never loses that drive to help people, which is so very him.

as for the second definition, the whole "more gets revealed and the character gets more depth with it", I don't think Capcom does very well with that altogether :'D their characters don't really have backstories that they could reveal, and they avoid inter-game/movie references a lot, so it's kind of hard for them to do that naturally with anyone. we don't learn that much about anyone, and it's all up for interpretation and it's up to us to peel off the layers. I think RE2 does a fairly good job with Leon, tbh, we see him go from "what the fuck is going on here?" to that passionate speech at Kendo's, and we learn about his personality through his actions. and if you're willing to look at how he acts, how he reacts in different situations, how he relates to people? it's fairly easy to build a clear picture of how he ticks. except then some people only choose to see the one-liners and forget everything else. which. sucks. it's like they refuse to even give him a chance. and I'm not saying everyone has to love him and everyone has to think he's the best, of course not! but just because you might not relate to a character personally or find them appealing personally, it doesn't mean they're a bad character.

total number of completed works: 26 this year i think, between tumblr and ao3!! Not including the orchestra au, which i’ve yet to finish and start posting :)))

total word count: i wrote 165k words this year! And i did include the orchestra au in that one, bc its consumed so much of the time i’ve spent writing during the second half of 2021

looking back did you write more, less, or the expected amount of fic this year?: more, i think!! Because looking back this year has just been,,,so crazy? And i totally expected it to be crazy–i graduated college, moved, started my career, i’m applying to grad school, like i did not expect to have time to write as much as i did during 2020, which was primarily a year of quarantine and isolation lol. Last year my word count was 104k i think. So i definitely topped it!! 

your own favorite story of this year?: it might be On Gravity and Broken Things, my stargazing fic, which i wrote for the Untold Zine so that was pretty cool. Also, maybe Reflections?

did you take any writing risks this year?: writing multichapter fics!! I’d never done it before Bloodlines, bc honestly I was afraid of the commitment lol and couldn’t justify it to myself. But this year, I finished Bloodlines, my fic where Dooku, Anakin, and Obi-Wan get stranded on Tatooine. And I also started a modern au where Anakin, Obi-Wan & company are professional musicians in an orchestra. And that fic is honestly like,,,so special to me. I know none of you have read it yet lol but it’s kept me company during what might be one of the loneliest times of my life (i’m good tho!! just being very independent lol) and that’s just,,,neat

do you have any fanfic goals for the new year?: start posting my next multichapter!! After i finish and edit, of course. But i also want to write wayyyyy more oneshots. I have this annoying mindset that everything i write has to be like, my magnum opus lol, and i think that held me back this year from doing work that wasn’t necessary “moving” so much as just plain fun. 

most popular story of the year? Bloodlines, which is no surprise!

story most under-appreciated? hmm…probably The Thing About Falling, which is understandable lol. I know obitine isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, and also this one was high-key me projecting my relationship problems onto fictional characters lol, but it is quite special to me, and i was proud of it

most fun story to write?: probably What I Want lol, where Obi-Wan buttdials Cody when he’s sleep deprived.

most unintentionally telling story: yikes!! ummmm part of me wants to say the one i posted today bc i technically wrote it on new years eve…..that one was…something. But one that i posted in 2021, would probably be What Dreams May Come. I think i mentioned when i posted it that it was,,,basically something that happened to me in real life and i just needed to fic-ify it lol. Both of those are codywan, which is interesting…do i smell projection?

biggest disappointment: hmm i’m not sure if i have any? Except for maybe, idk–you know how as writers we all go through the whole “what if i’ve peaked what if i never write anything good again” nonsense? Yeah lol

biggest surprise: getting to write for 2 zines! (one won’t come out till later this year tho!) That’s just a really cool opportunity to collab with some awesome people.

my favorite part of fandom this year: just getting to strengthen these awesome friendships i have, and make some new ones too. Like its so awesome–how some of these people i’ve now known for almost 2 years, and like?? We genuinely care about and check in on each other the way i do with real-life friends. Which is just awesome, and i love you all dearly.

But also there’s some people here on tumblr who i haven’t even talked extensively with, but who have popped into my inbox to offer me support when needed and that’s just really special too. Like–i mentioned, this year was a lot!! It was dramatic for me!! And every time i’d even mention i was feeling less than stellar i’d have someone–or multiple someones–offering to listen or just giving a virtual hug. And i’m really grateful for that too :) i’ve been so, so fortunate in my dealings online, and i’m looking forward to another wonderful year w/ yall :’)))))

“Popular” blog @thatsmyhyde​ is a prominent creator in the J&H Fandom. But here’s where the problem shows up: 

the content they make is concerning at least, and full of red flags at worst. 

DISCLAIMER: This is all information I have gathered through their tumblr blog - I am not aware of what other things they may be posting on other social medias or their written work.  ANOTHER DISCLAIMER: Please be polite, I am a minor, and am just creating this post to ward off / warn other minors from following this person. If you are an adult interacting with this post and blog, be mindful of your actions and be responsible

Trigger warnings for: discussions of homophobia, discussions of p//phillia, fat-shaming, fat-phobia (?), etc. Just be on general edge for this post, we’re talking about a lot of weird stuff

I will be linking their posts as I am not going to take screenshots of their art.

This is not a comprehensive list of all the things they’ve done - these are the ones I could think of and was able to adress. If you have anything additional you want to add to this post (such as concerning things they may do on other social media), feel free to reblog and add on the things you need to say, just please don’t be dumb. 

Let’s start with the premise: Henry Jekyll creates an alter ego, Edward Hyde. They begin a relationship - an emotional and physical one. Their AU features Jekyde (A popular ship in the fandom, the name stands for Jekyll x Hyde), people have various views on this ship. 

So far so fine, right? Here are the problems:

1. Their Henry Jekyll is an awful person. Now, let’s start by saying that of course you can have bad people in your works, those are, after-all: villains. The problem is,Henry Jekyll is a harmful walking gay sterotype, and an outlet for Biscuit’s obvious fat fetish. But their relationship isn’t just toxic it’s romanticised in how toxic it is.

a. The harmful stereotype - Their Henry Jekyll has a “thing” for younger men, even though he is in his middle-ages, and Hyde looks like a young child. (Age gap relationships are their own thing - they come with their own burdens, and this is not the post to discuss them. This topic will lead into the Edward  Hyde section of this post.) But, it was a known homophobic scare-mongering tactic of straight parents to accuse everyone who is gay that they are ‘out to prey on your youths’. This is a stereotype that stigmatized the LGBT community, and still harmfully affects them to this day. 

b. The fat fetish: Jekyll is frequently seen with cake (as seen here, here, and here)  or being self-loathing, to the point of suicide. (click the link here to acess a list of suicide and other crisis hotlines! you matter to me!). Now, the self-loathing could be a symptom of depression or other mental illness, so I am not going to talk about it, as a person with mental illnesses.  But the self-loathing in addition to him being fat is not good. Media is drowning in the “self-loathing fat person” and as someone who isn’t thin i’m tired of seeing this. 

- The fetish aspect comes in him constantly being referred to “Chonky”, a term usually used for overweight/obese cats and being drawn obsessed with cake. It fetishises his weight and dehumanises him into something people call their animals. Also, here’s more of Jekyll eating food and being embarassed by it, though this time because it’s seen as “servant’s food”. 

- Biscuit admits to liking them “Big and chunky” in posts like this.

- They also talk about how they ‘prefer’ to draw fat (chonky) people. Image attatched above. the thing that should be noticed is that they say ‘chonky old toxic henries’ . they, once again, are making fat people a fetish.

Biscuit once again talks about how he doesn’t want to draw ‘thin men’, because he is only interested in older ‘round’ people. He, is, once again, bringing to light his fetish for fat people. 

2. Edward Hyde is basically a child - Edward Hyde is drawn in boy’s school clothes, is taken in and raised like a child after Jekyll’s death, and is constantly cooed over by the creator, even earning a nickname of ‘slime’ from them. In addition, he also has ‘family photos’ taken with Utterson, has his toenails kept, is the height of a child, and teeths. This, paired with the fact that he is in a toxic, abusive, relationship with a man in his middle ages is concerning and should not be romanticised.

a. Hyde is treated like a child after Jekyll’s death. Hyde teething is concerning because that’s something infants do. He also clings to utterson like a child. The idea that he gets taken in by Utterson, whisked away to an estate out in the country, despite both of them having romantic feelings for Jekyll is. how do I put this: WEIRD. (seriously, imagine your father/father-figure dating ur significant other / having a crush on them before you two got together and after). 

b. Hyde dresses like a child, whilst being sexually active and wearing lingerie. Now, on their own, these traits aren’t a problem - but together? They are very much a problem.  

- Hyde dressing as a child is concerning because he is also treated like a child at certain points in their “lore”. After Jekyll’s death, Hyde becomes a singular entity, and is taken away by Utterson. To care for, like a child. This post sums it up well: he wears both children’s clothes and lingerie. 

- Hyde has a very strange appearance - if you compare it to his early design (which was less cartoony and looked more like a man in his twenties), Hyde’s current design is concerning. Why does he have the height of a child? Why does he have eyes that take up a grand part of his face? Now, one could argue that ‘he is not human’ - but if he is treated like a human, whilst wearing children’s/youthful clothes, teeths, and his general enchanment with the world - he appears as human (and looks eerily similar to a child), which is why him being sexually active, wearing lingerie, and being friendly with prostitutes (one that gave him underwear and other articles of clothing)  is concerning. 

- That said, Utterson is directly talked about being ‘adopted into gremlin fatherhood’ (paraphrasing).

- Jekyll has a ‘thing’ for younger men. This is to the point that the most attractive part about Hyde is that he is young. (or looks like it), Hyde looking very young is concerning because that would make their verison of Doctor Jekyll a p*dophille . This is something the artist has either not recognized, realised, or simply does not acknowledge. 

3. The toxic relationship (and how it’s romanticised) - The relationship in this ‘AU’ is: love comes first, toxic nature comes second. If you scroll through the blog you may see some reference of ‘Henry Jekyll is such a toxic person teehee’ and a lot of them kissing, being together, smiling, or enjoying life. Now, obviously, an artist - if they do not want to - should not draw characters being toxic to each other. But it is concerning when the above points come into a factor, that the toxic nature of their relationship comes second to the highs of their relationship, at least on their blog. 

Here is one of the only examples I’ve seen of Biscuit talk about the relationship in a detailed negative light. 

4. The fandom - Whilst Biscuit says it’s ok for minors to interact with his blog (in that blog he says that he tags nsfw - which is true.) he does not regularly mention that his jekyde is toxic - not in a concerete way. He romanticises it (despite acknowledging it’s flaws), and the only way it may or may not be (i would not know) acknowledged is his fic: which is mature and not meant for minors. He does not tag his posts with regular triggers for things like: alcohol, drugs, mental illnesses, or abuse (any variants). They’re not even in his blog’s description! If Biscuit had acknowledged it in his blog, something along the lines of: “Hey! This blog has <content warnings> be warned when interacting! But no, he does not. 

- A lot of the people who draw things, or generally interact with Biscuit are minors. Being exposed to such a thing may be harmful to my peers, and I am worried. To minors who are fans of Biscuit: if you’ve made it this far, thank you, I know you’re mature and responsible, but being exposed to content creators like Biscuit could lead you down a dangerous path of having this kind of thing normalised to you. Be careful with the content you consume, please! And thank you for making it this far, I’m sure you’re a lovely person :)!

2021 Year End Fic Review

How many stories did you complete?

Two. I finished a whopping two fics.

What is your total word count for the year?

……….8230. 🥲 I mean, more if you include the WIPs I absolutely shared content for but what is in a completed work? Yeah. Not even 10k words.

What fandoms did you write in this year?

I actually posted in two! ATLA and the MCU. XD

Less. So much less. It was a lot of things which contributed to that. I got a job, my grandmother moved in with me, I got depressed again….this year was just A Lot. So I wrote a whole lot less. I drew a whole lot less too. 🥲

What’s your own favorite story of this year?

The Way He Flies and while I still don’t love the title and long to think of one better suited to the story….I really love it. It was a concept I’d been really wanting to write and then a friend of mine (Amy 😘) gave me the perfect excuse and inspiration to write it!

Jetaang was the perfect debut to the fandom on Ao3!

What is your most under appreciated story of the year?

The Way He Flies! That shit has fourteen kudos and two comments (yall know who you are!! Forever thank you loves😘)….I’m sorry but that fic deserves a little more than that! I understand it’s a rarepair so I didn’t expect a LOT but damn didn’t even break 20 kudos and is up to 200+ hits. 😭 So seriously y’all if ya haven’t read it yet maybe give it a go?

What’s your most appreciated story of 2021?

Definitely the Ironstrange fic Ever A Sweet Victory. Which I did spend well over a year on so the love was absolutely warranted! Only just got to 1000 hits tho but the 100+ kudos defo made up for that. XD

Biggest fanfic related disappointment of 2021?

It will always be the lack of Aang centric fics and Aang rarepair fics!!!!! There are so many that deserve so much attention!!!

That I didn’t read as much as I wanted to. XP

Top of the list is my Yuetara fic!!! And then I’d like to complete all the other fics I started this last year that I just…never completed. A lot of Makorra shippers only moved on because they’re afraid of being called homophobic for not shipping korrasami. I LITERALLY saw someone on Instagram yesterday call a makorra shipper homophobic just for saying korrasami came out of nowhere. Also, Korrasami shippers LOVE to bring up the "popping bottles" backlash to make fun of makorra shippers. I left the tlok fandom in 2014 bc it was so toxic as a teenager, but now i’m 23. I’m no longer afraid of shipping something i always loved.

Ah, yes, I realized I didn’t address the fandom's toxicity in the last ask, but I’ve spoken about it before. I don't talk too much about the past because I was at the edge of the fandom back in 2014/2015. I was aware of fights, but the discussions I saw were moreso on bi-erasure. I saw one post saying it was wrong to ship Makorra. I remember being really confused about why Makorra was actually problematic, but I didn’t appreciate being told who I can ship the only dark-skinned woman protagonist on a major television network with. Why are you forcing me to ignore Mako and Korra’s relationship? Book 1 is practically about Mako and Korra, all other characters be damned. Me preferring the story of one pairing and a popular romance trope, second chances, is not wrong, and no one would know how I view the LGBT+ community based on who I ship in one show.

I ended up leaving the community because I was disappointed with season 4 in general. When Korra was released on Netflix, I figured it was time to rewatch the series again (plus, I’ve been binging all my favorite romance anime). So imagine my shock when I created a new Tumblr and Twitter account to rant and rave about TLOK, and I saw nothing but hate and name-calling in the Makorra tags. I saw people casually throwing around the word “homophobic,” and one person said people who don’t like Korrasami are just misogynistic. 

I just wanted pretty pictures, and people are out here psychoanalyzing shippers! So, I dug through some blogs and to feel more grounded with this fandom I didn’t recognize. After reading through their commentaries and experiences, I actually became more upset at Bryke than the teenagers/children who comment on Makorra posts saying how much better Korrasami is or accuse Makorra shippers of being homophobic. 

Yes, I truly believe these comments are mostly coming from people in their late teens and younger, at least in 2020. I can’t speak on 2014/2015, but since we were younger, the early 20s/late teens, I wonder if our age group was also the loudest. Don’t get me wrong, adults can be horrible people and can get really nasty. However, every time I look up the rudest commenters' profiles, they were teens. When one Korrasami shipper wrote “screw Makorra” on my AMV, I figured I’d have some fun trolling them until I clicked on their profile and saw a child. Needless to say, I ignored them and reflected on how parents are allowing their babies on TikTok while my parents freaked out at the idea of showing my picture on FB growing up.

Also, while it doesn’t give anyone an excuse to make such a strong accusation, part of me, as a straight person, feels like I can’t get too upset because I also become very aware of my privilege. The space I’m in is a majority of young LGBT+ fans (at least on Twitter where I’ve seen the most toxicity). Some people see TLOK as their safe space and imply why should there be Makorra shippers when they have all these other cis/het shows they can engage with. It doesn’t work like that, of course. TLOK doesn’t only feature Bi characters. They’re POC/Indigenous, women, and Korra has dark skin. That’s a lot of marginalized communities. Makorra/TLOK is my comfort show, not because she’s with a man, but because of the reasons I just listed. Also shipping Korra with Mako doesn’t mean she’s no longer bi. She’d still be attracted to women.

Here’s who I am upset with tho, Bryke. Mostly Bryan. While Makorra shippers called out Korrasami shippers for cyberbullying, the focus seemed to be on Bryan for making it seem like there was something wrong with them for not finding Korrasami’s narrative satisfying. It was especially sad to read bloggers who identified as being part of the LGTB+ community saying Bryan’s hetero-lens dismissed their experience and then having to defend/proving themselves to anonymous messengers. 

Fans saw it as a betrayal. They saw it as the go-head for the rude Korrasami shippers to harass Makorra artists because they “didn’t watch the show correctly.” When the creator, the person you admire, also puts the blame on you, that kind of pain is on another level.

Korrasami shippers played a huge role in kicking Makorra shippers out of the fandom, but we can’t underestimate how much Bryan’s statement is a slap in the face. He used his characters and social justice as a shield for reasonable criticism. Just because we say a story is bad and Asami is grossly underwritten doesn’t mean that we’re against the idea of Korra and Asami being a couple. 

Of course, I’ve seen some very problematic statements from Makorra shippers. After all, homophobia is real. However, aside from the actual bigots, people have no issue with Korrasami. They just wanted a stronger connection between the girls. Many people seem to think Makorra shippers were looking for more romance, but we know we couldn't expect that. We can expect more screentime, musical cues, and more emotional support, which most people can see as platonic, but be romantic if you really want to. Mako’s interactions in book 4 can be seen as platonic, but all of us Makorra shippers saw it to be romantic.

Popping bottles! I completely missed that joke in 2014 and I discovered it this year. I agree it’s pretty annoying, but I become a troll and say I’m popping bottles for my Makorra moments. I don’t get any engagement, but I don’t seem to lose followers for it. Maybe popping bottles represents “straight-baiting?” I don’t get it why it’s so funny after all this time, but we’re Makorra shippers. We’re the joke 🙄

Anyways, to wrap up, lately, there seems to be a bit of a shift on Twitter. When I first created an account. I stayed in my little corner live-tweeting about TLOK and Makorra. I had to stop looking at the Makorra tag because it was so negative. Now, I’m seeing people admit they’re cute, and then saying they’re platonic soulmates. I’ll take it, although, as one commenter said, “that’s boring!” 

Someone led a Makorra Week back in October, and it was really nice! I have feeling people speaking up on the name-calling and reminding people that we’re talking about 2D characters helped. We just want to be left alone and enjoy the scenes we have in the show, art, and fanfiction.

I’ve been a Makorra shipper since 2012, and while I find Korrasami cute (I love Korra, and I love Asami), Makorra is my OTP. I really like them, and I think they were meant for each other.
