Inktober day 5: Ace Trappola and Deuce Spade // Les Calderes d'en Pere Botero
Les Calderes d'en Pere Botero (Pere Botero's Cauldrons) is a way to call Hell in Catalan folklore, with "Pere Botero" referring to the Devil.
In the traditional comedic Christmas play "Els Pastorets" (The little sheperds), written by Josep Maria Folch i Torres, the two protagonists, Lluquet and Rovelló, live an adventure in their dream after falling asleep after la Missa del Gall (the Rooster's Mass, which is the Mass done the night before Christmas) In their dream they arrive at Judea, where they'll have to save baby Jesus from the machinations of Satan and Lucifer, who want to avoid his birth, with the help of the Archangel Miquel.
One of the most famous parts of the play is when Lluquet and Rovelló have been captured by Satan and Lucifer and are being kept in a boiling cauldron. Rovelló starts sneezing and everytime Lluquet answers with a "Jesús" (which is how you say "Bless you" in catalan). Every "Jesús" Lluquet says hurts the demons and is also what lets Archangel Miquel find them and thus save them from their hellish demise.
