not that anyone cares but here's all the rick songs and the most rick lyrics off the album because it floors me and i love this shitty album and my shitty tv show
breathe (2am)
okay so like it's not the most rick song on the album but the pre chorus is very rick dealing with the effects of the omega device "'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable/And life's like an hourglass glued to the table/No one can find the rewind button, girl/So cradle your head in your hands"
y'know like he'll never be able to go back and undo what prime has done, he's stuck in the aftermath
and ofc verse 2 because Alcoholism Theme "Ain't been sober since maybe October of last year/Here in town, you can tell he's been down for a while/But, my God, it's so beautiful when the boy smiles/Wanna hold him, maybe I'll just sing about it"
also verse 3, like we don't know what the flesh curtains sang about (please writers, i'm begging girls, give me one (1) flesh curtains performance and i will die happy) but it's fun to imagine rick writing about personal, dark shit and having the guy he's in love with his best friend singing about it "2 AM and I'm still awake writing a song/If I get it all down on paper, it's no longer inside of me/Threatening the life it belongs to/And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd/'Cause these words are my diary screaming out loud"
citadel
this is THE song that makes me confused about the fact that rick sanchez as we know him didn't exist in 2004 because this is just a whole song about him
per crybaby backstory we know that he returns to earth and prime's family after the completion of the citadel so "I'm sitting on a citadel/Contemplating life/Making a point to waste my time/I'm walking on clouds of white" paints this picture of him moving on from this massive project he doesn't believe in and trying to find a new purpose
so then chorus and pre-chorus (is VERY cheesy but motherfucker this is a debut album written by someone in their late teens/early 20s, slack por favor) kind of describes this huge moment of uncertainty "And what if I fall? What if I don't?/What if I never make it home?/What if I bleed? What if I break?/And I find that I can't take/The city below/The citadel holding my own hand?" can he move on from the citadel and trawling the multiverse? can he do it alone? will he be able to "take" his new life and try again?
"I'm killing the pain of broken hearts" homie has just spent most of his adulthood killing off versions of himself, all suffering the same pain of having their wife ripped from them
and then the bridge is just "Holding on to something/That's keeping me from jumping/So afraid to go it alone/And holding up this fortress/With imaginary forces/Longing for a life down below" he's still holding onto diane, and maybe she's the only thing that's keeping him from ending it all, he's put together this whole world for ricks and yet he's longing to have a family again, a "life down below"
also "The city below/The citadel holding my own hand?" is just very rick, he's made up this whole myth of only being able to depend on himself because of all the betrayal he's faced so of course he's contemplating if he'll be able to get through life where it's just him holding his own hand, only receiving whatever small amount of comfort he allows himself to have (which we know from solaricks is Not Much)
so yeah, she wrote this about rick sanchez (probably)
wreck of the day
if there is one person who is The Wreck of the Day it's rick fucking sanchez
there is a very clear amv in my mind of a smash cut of all of the scenes of him literally "driving away from the wreck of the day" with him and morty (/whoever else was on the adventure)
"Desperately close to a coffin of hope/I'd cheat destiny just to be near you" this is basically the fucking rick v. rick thing that prime set up for the ricks who get too close to him, offering diane back is the "coffin of hope" and since no one's survived the chamber before he does "cheat destiny" to get close to her, by way of getting revenge
"If this is giving up/Then I'm giving up, giving up/On love, on love" i don't feel the need to elaborate, y'all get the drift
"Maybe I'm not up for being a victim of love/All my resistance will never be distance enough" we know that he doesn't continually hunt for prime throughout the series, he clearly takes a break since unity comes back to check on him once they realize that he's seriously pursuing him again, so this lyric reflects a moment of rick wanting to put an end to the revenge seeking but of course "all my resistance will never be distance enough" because he can never escape the quest
"Driving away from the wreck of the day/And it's finally quiet in my head/Driving alone, finally on my way home/To the comfort of my bed" alexa, play "look on down from the bridge" by mazzy star
satellite
this is only kind of a rick song, it references space and tech themes a lot so i do a lot of generalized day dreaming to this song but there are some specific lyrics that hit moments from the show
"Through a starry night, I'm better nowhere bound/Than drowning on your solid ground" i like to imagine rick just tooling around in space rather than deal with anything happening with his family on earth/anything else in his life
"Love might be just like me/Jaded, waiting all alone/A whisper on a two-way radio" ahh yes, someone very over love in all forms
"And so I send my feeble flare/Through the silent, arctic air/Heading anywhere, until at last I've finally found/A place to lay my anchor down" that one clip of rick in the arctic during the backstory flashback? him literally going anywhere and everywhere before laying his anchor back down on earth?
"Heaven help me/I'm drowning and I can't save me/Send some salvation/To keep me alive" girlypop he is Unwell and is relying on the strength of hatred for the guy who killed his wife to keep going
in my head
woahhhhh a birdrick song? it's more likely than you think rickheads
"Under the weight of your wings/You are a God and whatever I want you to be/And I wonder if truly you are/Nearly as beautiful as I believe" ugh depending on birdperson and the idea that together they could have a different life, i get the impression from what rick says to him during blood ridge that he's willing to put down the hunt for prime and just embrace the meaninglessness of life with bp at his side
"And this make believe will get me through/Another lonely night" oooooo rick definitely thought about his future with bp as a maladaptive coping mechanism to get through the intensity of their lives, constantly fighting and being on the run
"I'll take you away in the way that you take me/And go where I go" blood ridge girl
"Melancholy and cool, kind of bitter sweet/Love on repeat/I'm echoing all your philosophies" this scans directly to "then why did you help?"/"because i respect you and I wanted you to know that you could respect me" he's literally "echoing all [his] philosophies" to earn his respect i can't-
anyway this is the outro: "Under the weight of your wings/I make believe you are all that I'll ever need, all that I need" because YOU KNOW those motherfuckers have cuddled together when the nightmares got too bad and they just wanted comfort from the horrors
catalyst
this is the rick sanchez known addict song because "So you're taking these pills for to fill up your soul/And you're drinking them down with cheap alcohol"
"And I'd be inclined to be yours for the taking/And part of this terrible mess that you're making/But me, I'm the catalyst" there is a lot of interpretation to be done about these lyrics and whose perspectives we can think about them from as well as who really is the catalyst for rick's actions, ESPECIALLY since the perspective switches in the second chorus and now "you're the catalyst"
in some ways, you could think about this as being from morty's perspective, as he helps and encourages the hunt for prime, helping rick put into motion the plan that eventually leads him there
in other ways it could be about prime himself, offering rick a part of his world only to be turned down and killing diane as a result
or even diane, who we know through fear no mort was intelligent like rick and likely encouraged his work, but would never know that her death completely shapes the rest of rick's life
"When you say love/Is a simple chemical reaction" y'all know this directly scans to a famous rick quote, focus on science baby
"You'll be the vein, you'll be the pain/You'll be the scar/You'll be the road, rolling below/The wheels of a car" this whole bridge is so fucking prime coded especially the way he's impacted rick's life. he's the pain, he's the scar, he's literally the road that rick has been following for the greater part of his life
consider this
an angsty lil bop to think about everyone's favorite volatile asshole to
"'Cause I don't wanna lie/That I'm okay and I'm alright/I'd rather take it and forget it/Consider this a warning" this is definitely rick in the earlier seasons, being openly not okay and kind of making it everyone's problem
"'Cause I'll start another fight and you'll say it's all alright/I'll wait for the day when you find I'm too much for you, baby/So lay your hands over me and fear what you only see/But don't bother wasting your time if you're trying to change me" this to me speaks a lot to his relationship with the smiths and the fact that he pushes them away but still hopes for closeness and is altogether resistant to changing anything about himself
"I'll go from bad to worse/And later back to better/But I'll never bet on bridges that are meant to burn" yup, that's rick all right!
so yeah, that's all the rick content i can squeeze out of this album. the whole thing is a vibe and a bop, but that's because i love angsty women and music from the 2000s and if you do too you might get a kick out of this.
can't believe anna nalick wrote wreck of the day in 2004, rick sanchez didn't even exist yet and somehow she still wrote like half the album about him
