This is Alfred the famous Western Lowland gorilla of Bristol zoo. He arrived at the zoo in 1930 and died in 1948. He was mounted by taxidermist Rowland Ward of London. He’s a fantastic specimen of taxidermy. Today I skinned a crow with the wonderful Taxidermist Tonja Grung ready to be mounted tomorrow. My first bird and so far its gone pretty well, leaky bird brains and all. Tonja is an amazing teacher and really knows her stuff. I'm looking forward to completing him tomorrow! Currently I'm trying to find London based taxidermists to interview for my thesis on taxidermy in contemporary art.
