2024 Horror Challenge: [20/?]

Plot: A 28-year-old artist gets stranded in an expansive, untouched forest in western Ireland. Finding shelter, she unknowingly becomes trapped alongside three strangers who are stalked by mysterious creatures every night.

Okay, so I actually only just got out of the movie theater from watching this not too long ago, which was an impulsive decision I made this morning since it was my off day & figured why not. lol I actually haven't been back to the theater in forever cuz you know, money & convenience but it did feel good to remember what's so great about the experience (even if there was literally only 2 other people in the same showing as me since I went to a cheap matinee lmao) Anyway, about the movie, I didn't really feel the biggest need to go see it tbh but I have been curious about it. I didn't know too much beforehand since I've mostly avoided spoilers and I knew Dakota was starring in it, who I've always liked since she was a child. Also, that ofc, this is directed by M. Night Shyamalan's daughter (which is naturally gonna maybe give you some biased expectations about it) and my track record with him isn't the most solid, to say the least. BUT I did wanna give Ishana a fair chance since I've seen people point out that she has her own style, plus this story is based on a book so I went in with an open mind. Overall, I don't think I was totally in love with it but seeing it in the theater definitely enhanced the actual experience of watching it as they intended it. First, whoever did the sound mixing for this movie did a great job. Cuz there were moments that got me a couple times. lol There were some jump scares that didn't do too much to get me throughout but the knocks?? Damn, I'm glad I was seated in the back so the guys didn't see me flinch. XD I don't think the movie itself was too scary since I think in true PG-13 form they chose not to show certain things. There's a lot that is suggested and people who hate gore can watch this knowing that it never crosses the line of being bloody. It does feel very plot heavy (the lore of it all), which is interesting because at the same time there really isn't a whole lot to the story until much later when they reveal a twist (it wouldn't be a Shyamalan movie without at least one lol) but I didn't mind too much at first. By the hour mark tho, I did start to think it was feeling a little too long tho considering so I will say pacing was my main issue with this one. We would get these snippets of exposition throughout in between the bits of action in a way that felt a little forced maybe or at least the formula felt repetitive. But that said, I did enjoy the lore itself tho. Like, I wanted more of that than some of the stuff we got. lol Gotta point out that I do have an appreciation for ensemble stories in small spaces and the actors all did a wonderful job, especially Dakota. She is able to say so much with those eyes of hers without uttering a word. In one particular scene, she got me good. I also thought they did a nice job of establishing the aesthetic and feel of the movie right from the jump with a strong opening scene to set the mood. So, while it's got plenty of flaws that make it probably a 6/10 movie for me, there were things going for it as well. I think you can tell it's a first movie by the director but it shows potential. The ingredients for a stronger movie are there so while like I said, I didn't leave the theater loving it, I can appreciate its intentions. Also, it made me wanna read the book to see if I prefer that. If nothing else, it got me back in a movie theater so I'm grateful for that!

that being said, may i have a red velvet truffle? i'm a sagittarius girl with no gender preference (but i do lean towards guys!). i like bubble tea, the art genre french impressionism (my favorite piece is "the bar at the folies-bergere" by eduoard manet, but i also enjoy works by monet and van gogh), anime/manga, and kpop. i also love to write and draw. i really like sushi, takoyaki, and matcha mochi (i'm obsessed with matcha lolol). i don't like idiots (lolol), especially those who are narrow-minded and/or insensitive. as i said before, my hobbies include writing and drawing! watercolor painting is very fun also. i'm kind of an all-rounder in talents? i learn pretty fast ^^ academically, i do very well in all subjects and i'm pretty good at drawing. i'm decent at athletic things! i'm a beginner at volleyball & i fare decently. i kind of have a talent for teaching (but this probably came about from the fact i had to teach my peers a lot from a young age). some of my positive qualities are that i'm intelligent, witty, and funny (i think!! sjnddjd). some negative qualities of mine are that i have trust & intimacy issues. i don't trust many people and often put up a happy persona that no one sees through. i am also socially anxious at times. as mentioned before, i have intimacy problems, so i do have a fear of intimacy. i'm also terrified of all bugs. i get scared easily (i jump at loud sounds and CANNOT stand any scary movies. i thought goosebumps 2 was scary lmao). i deeply aspire to be kinder & someone people can look up to. i believe that apathy is the world's greatest enemy! i aspire to be truly happy with myself & where i currently am. i deeply admire kindness & perseverance through adversity as well as passion in others. the thing that gets me hooked? intelligence. i love love love holding and maintaining deep conversation with others (as opposed to people staring at me in awe...). so, i also like people who don't glorify me. i dislike insensitive idiots & narrow-minded people. i also hate people with unpredictable anger issues (bakugou is an exception 😔😔 i relate to him too much as a gifted child). some extra info is that my hogwarts house is ravenclaw, i'm an infp/intp, and my enneagram is 5w4.

Okay so obviously the intelligence was a big factor, but the other parts of his personality, like his extreme dedication to everything he does and his clear caring of his peers and desire to help them also contribute to you guys ending up together! And cmon, where are you gonna find someone more passionate? Exactly.

Overall he admires so so many things about you, from your creativeness, your witty remarks, your athletic inclination, and just the fact that you can match him in academic prowess was the nail in the coffin. GOSH he loves learning, but from you especially, and thinks it’s great that you can teach others so well too! Don’t take this as him worshipping you though, he’s all about improvement, whether it be in him or others, and won’t hesitate to point out your flaws (but also help you work them out dw lol).

Okay so... the loud n jumpy outbursts might be an issue i’ll admit BUT!! He’s more than willing to tone it down once he sees how jumpy you get because by god if he isn’t gonna be a beacon of goodwill and trust for everyone!! Speaking of trust, he would be okay with your issues with it, and wouldn’t force you into feeling anything. Rather he’d work endlessly in proving himself as someone worthy of trusting, just because of how genuine he is, maybe that genuineness even inspiring you to lessen your persona and be more honest with how you think and feel? Possibly 👀👀 And honestly I can see him having trouble with intimacy as well (his awkward and flustered moments would get cranked to an 11) so tl;dr your relationship would be a slow, but strong one.

His upbringing would allow him to appreciate your artistic interests on a level no one else would, and I could see a good number of your dates in various museums as you talk endlessly about the pieces, their history, their deeper meaning, all of it. But ofc you’d have your more casual outings of sushi shops and boba stands, where you’d have either more long convos or silly back-and-forth’s of you joking with him and him taking it way too seriously but that just making it all the funnier ;0 (also PLEASE try to get him into kpop, one it wouldn’t be hard cause he’d be infatuated by the sheer effort that goes in the choreography and cinematography of their m/v’s, two it’d be mad funny to see him do the moves in his lil angular way, three you could def convince him to take you to one of their concerts cause hes got the funds sis 😙)

Seventeen & Tattoos

this is hardly a reading! i’m just looking at their chart and saying if they would or wouldn’t get tattoos and why. lolol enjoy if you’re like me and really like tattoos!

Seungcheol: yes, he thinks they’re cool and wants ones with a lot of meaning that’s very significant to him. maybe to symbolize overcoming/achieving something like a battle scar/trophy. may also think it’d be a profound way to express himself on things he’s too shy/uncomfortable to express openly normally. kinda afraid to do it, tho. thinks they’re hot tho and likes that sexy tatted, bad boy look. 

Jeonghan: maybe a tiny one. struggles to settle on a design although he really likes the aesthetic and meaning of tattoos. would want soft, cute ones he could easily hide. may only bite the bullet if it were a matching tattoo with everyone else, though. 

Joshua: thinks they’re dope but doesn’t really feel the need to get one. i wouldn’t rule it out entirely as i think it fits his aesthetic and if the opportunity arises and it feels right, he’ll go for it. 

Jun: nah, not his style. nothing fun about it, too serious and too intense. he just doesn’t feel the need to permanently mark his skin for anything in particular. may have a fascination with them, but knows he may change his mind. 

Hoshi: i mean he probably wants a tiger. he likes that it’d be bold and very signature him. high probability he wont go through with it, though. he wouldn’t like the idea of not being able to adjust the look based on his mood. would generally think it’d be too dark and intense a style for him if he were to do a lot/one big one. will settle for tiny tiger.

Wonwoo: honestly, yeah. he doesn’t feel the need to significantly alter his body in any other way because they seem purely ornamental for him. but with tattoos he could associate meaning and depth through symbolism. he would appreciate it as art. 

Woozi: thinks they’re cool, wouldn’t want it for himself. too scary, too uncomfortable, generally not worth it for him. 

Seokmin: maybe?? he thinks it would be cool and meaningful and would like the fact not many people would expect him to have one. probs wont go out of his way to do it. will make plans/come up with ideas in his head and then back out/talk himself out of it. 

Mingyu: maybe. he may like the tattooed look but generally i think he’s too dandy/modest in how he wants to appear that he wouldn’t want to commit to that look. tho he did say once he was into bad girls so who knows, there may be a little rebel in him. 

Minghao: hell yeah, thinks they’re hot and cool. when? dunno. but he definitely thinks they’re cool. may get one later in life when he’s more settled and knows exactly what he wants. like maybe a huge, beautiful piece by a special artist or maybe one he designed himself. he just normally struggles to be impulsive with these things and will wait for it to feel right (idk if that infinity one he had was real or not, does anyone know???) 

Seungkwan: almost definitely not. it’s painful to get and painful to remove if you change your mind. may like the idea of a really sentimental one with family/members, but would certainly think there are other less invasive ways of proving his love for them. 

Vernon: thinks they’re dooooooope. will probs start small and meaningful and, if he likes them, get larger and more fun/weird ones. maybe something by his parents?? there’s also the possibility he’d think they’re a bit unnecessary for him as he wouldn’t feel the need to permanently alter himself for the sake of appearance. may think it’s a big leap from thinking they’re dope to “yes put this on my skin forever.”

Dino: ehhhh probs not. struggles to think any one specific thing he’d want tattooed onto him forever. thinks they’re cool and may consider it, but i think he’d take too seriously what he’d want and would end up stressing himself out too much about getting the PERFECT tattoo.

I’m a 20-year-old Leo girl who’s studying Biomedical Engineering and Arts (with an English major!!) in Sydney. I used to be a guitarist in a high school band and am in general more of an independent individual than a leader/follower.

Physically I’m short with a generally small frame, and have naturally curly hair (though I’ve straightened the top half now!!) dyed a dark rose-pink/brownish color with loose eyebrow-length side bangs on either side curling outwards!! I tend to have softer features and my eyes are on the smaller side HAHHAHAH. My wardrobe basically consists of black, white, brown and beige with lots of jeans, boots and belts and almost no dresses ahahahah. (tbh my icon is me so yall can reference that but I usually have my hair let down ahahahh)

I’m a shy person but some of my friends say I exude a quiet confidence HAHAHHAH. Other ways my friends/family have described me include: smart, kind, awkward, cute, determined, hardworking, creative and being a happy virus. I generally do well in my studies and am particularly good in Physics and English! I do have my flaws tho, I can be too playful at times to the point where it accidentally gets someone hurt, I’m usually running late, I have terrible mood swings and I can be selfish or a little too competitive at times (especially towards my younger siblings unfortunately). Also I’m basically the most indecisive person ever!!

I love writing but I have a problem with not knowing when to stop and hence tend to go beyond word limits. I write well in both creative and academic writing though! I also love spending time with my dogs, napping/playing with them etc. I tend to work out quite a lot and I particularly love cycling! I love being up early and generally don’t mind waking up early but I like my mornings quiet and calm as I enjoy my breakfast hahahhah! But I also tend to stay up till very late at night so I truly am lacking a lot of sleep. I tend to spend a lot of time in my room and I like it that way but I love fun social events like parties and weddings (I’m not sure why??). I love cartoons/animated films a lot idk why but they give me a sense of relief from all my stress and they just make me feel good after watching them?? I also love creating random customized stuff like designing a birthday cake for my brother or creating a specialty dish for Mother’s Day- things like that. Things I don’t like include: loud noises, inconsiderate people, snails, being looked down upon, judgemental and close-minded people, presentations in front of large crowds and chocolate (sorry!!).

Some aesthetics of mine include: the colors of fall, comfy knitted sweaters, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and freshly baked bread, apple-scented objects, the fresh air on the top of a hill at the end of a hike, the wind in your face as you cycle down a hill, receiving or giving a customized gift, glass/transparency, deep ideas, hugging a dog (most furry animals), being in the middle of a bustling city, the sound of rain in the middle of the night, the serenity at dawn, wrapped up in your blanket watching your favorite tv show at night, getting work done at a cafe, the satisfaction having completed all your responsibilities, the way cereal and biscuits melt in your mouth after being soaked in milk for some time, hugs, doves being the symbol of peace and freedom, nyc apartments and theme parks.

My favorite food include pumpkins, Marie biscuits, cereal, artisan bread, almond milk, eggs with runny yolks, tomatoes, brocolli, mushrooms, bibimbap, sashimi salads, deli sandwiches, bruschetta, prawn dumplings, tiramisu, tangerines and flat rice noodle soups. My favorite books include Looking For Alaska by John Green and the Fire and Flood series by Victoria Scott. My favorite movies are Pitch Perfect (1&2 were good but 3 was kinda disappointing), The Devil Wears Prada, Wreck-It-Ralph, Inception, Enchanted, Kiki’s Delivery Service, the new Jumanji movies and Little Women. My favorite artists are One Direction and the kpop group Pentagon, which are basically the only two fandoms I’m apart of (if you don’t consider the 1D boys having 5 separate fandoms) and fandom life is a big part of who I am hahhahah. Oh! The Marvel fandom too as I absolutely adore Tony Stark and hence RDJ hahahah! My favorite TV Show is Friends (cliche I know) but also some animated series ahahhahh.

Okay so, I feel as though Semi would be perfect for you! Admittedly when I saw that you played guitar in high school, I immediately knew that Semi would be very attracted to that, thinking he and you could definitely bond with music, and playing instruments. It would such a cute sight to behold! But on another not, he will be incredibly impressed that you are studying engineering, along with and English major! I see Semi as one who will be attracted to someone who is smart and independent, someone who can take care of themselves, and is more of a leader than a follower, yet would rather be an individual and not deal with labels. And you fit the bill to a T!

For appearance, I feel as though Semi would absolutely love you rhair! Like it won’t show in his face, but he would stare at it and just think that he wants to touch, to run his fingers through it, like all the time. It would become some sort of relaxation thing for him, especially before games to play with your hair! It would so freaking cute! And along with the style and the color of it? Yeah this boy would just love it; it would make him want to dye his own hair to make it cool like yours! Semi would love this soft look you have going on, and don’t think bad about your small eyes; Semi will think that just adds to your unique features, makes you different from the rest of the people he has met and known. It is what makes you, you and he will love it very much! And has for your style, he would be very appreciative of it, only because it is so cohesive! I feel as though Semi is a great sense of style and could see someone who also has a good sense of style and really appreciate it, and if you were the one with it? Well, that would just further his infatuation with you!

Semi will love how the things you love mostly line up with his! He loves writing music and he loves that you write as well, in the other sense! Semi would have this idea of where he writes a piece of music, and then he will ask you to write a story based around the music he produced! It would be such a cute thing between the two of you! Semi also likes to workout and would love to exercise with you, and have you show him how to cycle properly! He thinks it would be a great way to get closer to you, and just see how much cuter you could get to him! He will understand the feel of waking up early for some quiet time, though I see Semi as more of a person that would sleep in, he would enjoy your routine while he sleeps lolol. Your ambivert attitude would really intrigue Semi, how you can just spend endless hours in your room to going to social events and not have your energy drained would amaze him, seeing as I think Semi would tend to stay away from big crowds. He would be drawn to that brightness you have! Semi will like how crafty you are with your hands, going from baking a cake for your mom, to creating cuisines for special events. He will think those are great characteristics for someone, and would be glad to it is you that has it! 

Semi also doesn’t like inconsiderate people, or judgemental and close minded people, so if you don’t like them and he doesn’t like them, it would be something you two can definitely bond on! I don’t see Semi being afraid of snails, but I see him thinking that it is extremely cute that you are afraid of them! He might tease you with one so be careful!

As for your aesthetics, I feel as though Semi will like all of them! Not necessarily because he likes all of them, but because all of them would remind him of you. From comfy knitted sweaters to the New York vibes, he would these things, feel these things, taste these things, and will automatically think about you. He won’t be able get you out of his head! And he would be okay with that, because that’s what he wants, to know you, think about you, love you, and be with you. Along with all the food you like to the fandoms you are in, he would be very supportive in what you like, in what you are interested in because all he is interested in is to see you happy with whatever you love, with whatever makes you interested in life, what makes you happy. Nausicäa // Nausicäa of the Valley of the Wind, Studio Ghibli

I didn't explain it last time, but I feel like she is the prototype for all the Ghibli girl heroines, free and autonomous, except she's a young woman who knows exactly what she believes in and wants to do. She's a warrior princess who believes in peace and kindness rather than war; she listens to mother nature and tends to her garden as deftly as she handles her glider jet; she's a born leader who puts her subjects' wellbeing before her own immediate safety. This gif here shows the moment she took of her own gas mask to boost morale while they're crashing into a toxic wasteland. I don't think I've seen many representations of female leadership as compelling and utterly human as hers was before or after this film debuted in popular media.

Harley Quinn // DCU

She's a bundle of contradictions but it's in that I find a female antivillain/antihero that feels real. Her stocky build and bit of chub in the tummy area? Real. Her slobbish habits and love for nasty junk food? Real. Her all encompassing empathy for animal welfare? Real. Disregarding the artists that draw her with too big boobs, she's so ordinary in her appearance and habits that it actually feels like she's the kind of girl that media often overlooks. She's like the manic pixie dream girl but rounded out with relatable human traits.

Tsunemori Akane // Psycho-Pass

I related to her when I was 20 (exactly her age at the start of the series) because I was at a crossroads in life, just as she was. I was searching for my calling, just as she was trying to understand her purpose and place in society. And at that point in my life, I could appreciate the duality between abiding by the system (legal reformation) and questioning the system (dipping into revolutionary ideas). I can't see myself relating to a cop anymore now obviously, but she's a rather unique figure that I still think about.

Ava // Ex Machina (2014), filmblr

She brings out all my post-humanist sympathies. And I think she captures a sort of queer android and Other perspective, one that the male characters feel threatened by, that women can understand well.

Maeve Millay // Westworld

She's my murder mom. Something something about "I've died a thousand times, I'm not afraid of death" (I'm paraphrasing majorly), she's so badass. The fact that she was one of the first androids to awaken and actually challenge the humans, there's so much power in her taking her trauma in stride and moving forward nonetheless. And I think you can see a recurring theme here lolol

Lois Lane (Gotham City Garage) // DCU Elseworlds

Perhaps this is just preserving a core attribute of her main continuity counterpart, but I absolutely adore the spirit she embodies of journalists who stay defiantly committed to truth and justice in the face of insurmountable odds. Fighting against a fascist terror regime - which hits very close to home - and keeping the broadcast going even out in the wasteland. In this last aspect she carries similarities to Dr. Death Defying's character from Gerard Way's Killjoys series, except she's a woman and she was actually fleshed out as a character with a heart and soul and a lot of gravitas. How can you not love her?

(and I forgot this was supposed to be 10 characters from 10 different fandoms until I finished this list but let's say her being an Elseworlds character counts as a different fandom 🤡🤡)

Ripley // Alien (even tho Sigourney Weaver's personal politics is a bit yikes)

The proto-final girl and original warrior mother in sci-fi wrapped into one. (Ok, the crown for modern scifi warrior mother might have to go to Sarah Connor actually, but that's also another Cameron invention so they can share that title.) Even tho I can't relate to most of her character arc, I'm still very impressed by her character. They even touch on her PTSD a little which is unheard of in the contemporary movies at the time.

Honorary mention: Sarah Connor // Terminator

Marceline the Vampire Queen // Adventure Time

Not the original goth gf, but she is a goth gf. Gay and aesthetics aside, I really liked that the show let her be a bit weird and gross (which she should be considering she's kind of undead) and her tragic backstory gets me every time. The best thing is she's still a big softie, who takes good care of Ice King / Simon when he's around; you don't see that kind of (grand)daughter character in media much.

Beverly Marsh // It (2017)

I haven't read the book but tbh I liked the agency the first movie awarded her enough that I'm afraid of jeopardising it; I don't like how the book portrays / handles her sexuality. She is a survivor of csa, but she's a fighter regardless. I like that about her.

Darlene Alderson // Mr. Robot

I honestly debated putting her on this list again since I haven't seen a single Mr. Robot episode in so long, but I do remember her character being given her own arc in S2 (and onwards I suppose) and she's a little fucked up in her own way. People look at Rami's character and get sucked in sorting through his alters but Darlene is no less complex - damaged, dangerous, and compelling.

Riko Sheridan // DCU (an Asian girl who isn't infantilised or reduced to the model minority? shocker!)

Missy // Colette (2018), filmblr (she's actually a real historical figure so I'm not sure if she counts. But she's so radical and ahead of her time - in fact the film seems to suggest she prefers he/him pronouns. I have never seen such intriguing butch representation and I just fell in love with her character. Worth a watch.)

Jo March // Little Women (2019), filmblr (since we're talking about historical women... well, she's a period film character but not a real one, but she's highly evocative of certain female experiences in much the same way)

Blue // The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (so I didn't wanna crowd this list with too many android ladies but she's the first queer android girl character I came across and I loved her instantly. Too bad they buried her gay but her entire concept is my aesthetic)

Rem // Death Note (I feel like I'm obligated to mention DN, too bad it has shitty writing wrt female characters, that's why I have no choice but to stan the lesbian monster gf friend who is so in love with her gal pal she would die for her. Ugh, poetic cinema)

Hiii :3 Is there a way to get noticed as an artist in social media, apart from uploading as often as possible? I'd like to get more feedback (from random people, followers old and new, whoever) on my art but I rarely get many notes both on Instagram and Tumblr. Do you think doing art trades and "art memes" could help? Sorry for bothering you~ :c

Hi~ Getting noticed takes time but there are definitely a few things you can do to improve your situation!

I don’t know if sharing your art as often as possible would be actually helpfull and I would choose quality over quantity, but I do think you need to get some attention before doing memes bc then who is gonna ask you for them? Opening requests works fine but do it once you already have some ppl following you and reblogging your art. With art trades you would only get attention from the person you are trading art with, and chances are you won’t get to do it with someone who is already popular.

The first thing you need is to make sure ppl can find you and your art, and they can only do so when you do stuff they are looking for. Tagging your art for both tumblr and your own blog is very important. Make sure the most important tags are within the first 5 so they appear in the search results (You can tag your art with as many things as you’d like and they’ll show up on the mobile app, but desktop version only consideres the first 5).The tag for your art on your own blog should be something especial, more so if you also reblog from other ppl. Tags like “my art”, “sketch”, “fanart” won’t do the job since searching for those words on someone’s blog will just show you any post that has those words regardless if they appear in the tags or in the caption (this happens when you use the search bar) Try using instead tags like “myart” so it’s easier for ppl to find stuff on your blog c:

What ppl want to see now! Fanart is one of the best ways to start even if your intention is to share your original art in the future. Even better if it is art for a ship. I personally only check my otp tag and posting for them is how I started. It’s a bit complicated with big fandoms bc your stuff can easily get lost in the crowd but the snk fandom is a good place to start luckily. Just check some ship tags and you will see only a few new posts from one day to another, so your contribution wouldn’t go unnoticed if you decided to post for those that have a small fanbase haha

Now about you art! The actual important thing lol I see you post traditional art and there are some tricky things about making a picture of a drawing to look appealing. Ppl appreciate traditional art in general but you have to make sure it’s something others would like to reblog. The photo has to be clear and applying filters can make a piece eye-catching! Your post might not get many reblogs if the post is too long as well... be it bc the picture is long vertically or bc you posted the same image twice or more one under the other, or bc you wrote too much text. I like to post them side by side as not to take much space and it also looks better imo. If your aim is getting reblogs, you gotta make your posts aesthetically friendly for the rest’s blogs lol a closeup tho is okay and it looks nice bc ~*details*~

Try leaving what’s behind your art out of the picture and get your drawing centered so it can be better appreciated. You should see how other artist share their traditional art and follow their example! like this and this artist. Experimenting is also important so you always should try new things. One thing I would recomment is using colors and here is an example of something I thought I was almost done with but better decided to overline and shade in red (also added some orange and mint green here and there just bc + nicer bg lol). Only that, and that first sketch went from meh to having personality
