My Adventures With Superman Season One Spoiler-Filled Review [Part 2]
Continued from part 1
The voice cast is talented. Jack Quaid lent his voice to Peter Parker / Lizard in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and more prominently as Ensign Bradward "Brad" Boimler in Star Trek: Lower Decks. This series marks one of Alice Lee's first voice roles, apart from voicing a character in Mickey Mouse Funhouse. She has played characters in TV series since 2009. Ishmel Sahid has been working on similar series since around the same time. In an exclusive interview with Lee and Sahid, both said they were excited to see fanart, but also said it was challenging to maintain the high energy of Lois and Jimmy. Both noted the writers and producers helped them. They described how they had to adjust their speaking voices to the characters and explained the flair they gave each character through the voices.
One member of the voice cast, Kari Wahlgren, is well-known. She voiced Martha Kent, and young Clark Kent, in this series. She has done dubbing of anime characters since 2002, and has voiced iconic characters in Western animation. This includes Electronique in Kim Possible, Suzy Johnson in Phineas and Ferb, Tigress/Sheena in Carmen Sandiego, Callie in the somewhat underrated Cleopatra in Space, and Zatanna in DC Super Hero Girls. She also lent her voice to characters in Sym-Bionic Titan, Young Justice, Infinity Train, Dota: Dragon's Blood, The Ghost and Molly McGee, The Owl House, Velma, and OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes.
Wahlgren is voice actor powerhouse in her own right. There are few voice actors, in the cast, who have voiced as many characters as Wahlgren. One exception is Zehra Fazal. She is recognized for voicing Nadia Rizavi in Voltron: Legendary Defender and Halo/Violet in Young Justice. She also voiced Faraday and Shannon in Craig of the Creek, Mara in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Zahra and Sabrina in Glitch Techs, General Yunan in Amphibia, and Tassia in Dragon Age: Absolution.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the forty-ninth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on September 21, 2023.
Others have voiced just as many characters. Chris Parnell voiced characters in Gravity Falls, BoJack Horseman, Elena of Avalor (Migs), Samurai Jack, and Dogs in Space (Ed). Debra Wilson previously voiced characters in Cannon Busters (Lady Day), Final Space (Quinn's mother), The Casagrandes, The Owl House, Star Trek: Prodigy, Black Dynamite, and The Proud Family. Catherine Taber voiced her share of animated characters including Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Lori Loud in The Loud House. Lucas Grabeel voiced characters such as Jiku in Elena of Avalor and the haughty scammer Julian in Spirit Riding Free.
youtube
The voice cast includes other prominent voice actors. Vincent Tong voiced characters in 16 Hudson, Ninjago, LoliRock (Mephisto), My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Polly Pocket, and The Dragon Prince (Prince Kasef). André Sogliuzzo voiced King Bumi in Avatar: The Last Airbender and King Verago in Elena of Avalor. He also voiced characters in Samurai Jack, Star Wars Rebels, and The Owl House. Darrell Brown previously lent his voice to characters in Gabby's Dollhouse and Madagascar: A Little Wild. Azuri Hardy-Jones voiced Jade in Deer Squad. Kenna Ramsey voiced various characters in video games.
Apt viewers may recognize Jake Green, Laila Berzins, Jesse Inocalla, David Errigo Jr., Max Mittleman, and Andromeda Dunker. Errigo Jr. is known for voicing Ferb in the 2020 film, Candace Against the Universe. The film is the most recent iteration of the Phineas and Ferb franchise. Inocalla voiced Soren in The Dragon Prince. Berzins voiced characters in indie animations such as Satina, Wild Card: Shuffled, and Monkey Wrench.
Other well-known individuals voice bit characters in the seventh episode: Kimberly Brooks as Jalana Olsen, Osric Chau as Lewis Lane, and Lauren Tom as Leader Lois. Brooks is best-known as Princess Allura in Voltron: Legendary Defender and the rough-and-tough Jasper in Steven Universe. Some may remember Chau as the one who voiced the villainous computer hacker known as The Troll in Carmen Sandiego. Tom voiced Mop Girl in recently ended a mature animation, Disenchantment, and Amy Wong in currently airing Futurama, another mature animation. This differs with actors such as Reid Scott, Joel De La Fuente, Melanie Minichino, and Michael Emerson (as Brainac). All four do wonderful voice work on this show, but have almost exclusively, or exclusively, previously done live-action TV series.
Warner Bros. Animation is a subsidiary of the Warner Bros. Discovery conglomerate. This subsidiary produced Velma, Harley Quinn, DC Super Hero Girls, Young Justice, Justice League Unlimited, Teen Titans, Justice League, Static Shock, Superman: The Animated Series, and Batman: The Animated Series. Rooster Teeth, another subsidiary, is recognized for RWBY, its flagship series. The CRWBY is doing all they can to ensure RWBY gets a tenth season. The RWBY superhero crossover film (part 2) is coming out this fall. It may include a version of Superman, like part one.
A largely-circulated spreadsheet in which people anonymously described their conditions in animation studios mentions Warner Bros. Animation. In one entry, Warner Bros. Animation is said to have too much work and treat workers badly. However, it acknowledges that each production is different. People on Glassdoor praised Studio Mir for high-quality projects and talented colleagues. Others were more critical.
Whatever the second season of My Adventures with Superman brings, the number of fans will continue to grow (including the 10,000+ fans across two subreddits), regardless of the corporate decision to air it on Adult Swim rather than Cartoon Network, possibly because of "dark moments" in the series. Hopefully the next season goes above and beyond what the first season delivered. Even so, I can't rate this series high enough, as it is just as strong as Harley Quinn and superior in many ways to the sometimes-convoluted Young Justice and mediocre Velma.
My Adventures with Superman can be streamed on Max or Spectrum. It can also be purchased on Prime Video, either as an entire season or individual episodes, iTunes, Vudu, Google Play, or Microsoft Store.

Maybe those who actively watched Debra Lolirock's Elvira Loliroc channels in 2020 may know me. But Debra's viewers probably know me better because she's the one who helped me become a little famous.╥﹏╥
Thanks to Debra, I got an audience. But I'm very ashamed that I'm famous for my covers, given my current attitude towards them.
But maybe that's what helped me develop as an artist. And people in Amino know me as Rina. On YouTube, they already have both names, but the audience is different. After my tablet, on which I was making videos then, broke down, everything could be said to have stopped. (I had 8 GB on my phone, and I couldn't mount it on a phone...)
So what am I talking about. So, “The Fallen Princess” started there as a visual novel, because I tried to revive the channel, but my tablet died againХ)
And then I started the comic with a bad drawing... I started it again, and recently I started to continue it again. And so here it is.
And downstairs is art with OC 2 girls with amino, and Serelina is mine. I can also link to amino.

Lyna & Carissa’s Developpment
Hi LoliRockers !
Here’s a big post, about Lyna and Carissa’s development. When season 1 was nearly completely written, we had a request from our producers : “Add two new princesses for season 2, and have a 5-princesses gang from now on”.
Initially, the team was very reluctant : we knew we already had too many characters, therefore adding two more seemed a bad idea for the stories. Jean-Louis Vandestoc suggested that instead of a “5 princesses gang”, the two new princesses should be supportive characters : outside the main gang but always ready and willing to help when needed. That way, it would be easier to add them without upsetting the balance we created between Iris, Talia and Auriana.
That’s why Lyna and Carissa were created as part of a second team : Izira’s Resistance Princesses, and why they’re not part of all the episodes of season 2 or live with the other princesses. Jean-Louis’ inspiration for them was Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune : he wanted Lyna and Carissa to be strong and independant, like Izira was. We had however to keep them both around the same age as our three main princesses, so we made them younger, and more like “princesses in training” rather than “mature veteran princesses” (much to JL’s disappointment)
Now, the question remained : what would they look like ? We wanted Carissa to be a “ fiery and tomboy warrior princess”, and Lyna to be a “snooty and delicate mage princess”. We also wanted an Asian princess, but didn’t know which one it would be... And so we started to draw...
All along your reading of this post and its designs, I let you appreciate all the little details and differences here and there. You can see what made its way up to the end, what was rejected. Just be aware that it wasn’t a straight path. It never is.
1 - The First Researches
Finding new symbols became like a game for the whole production team, not only the artists. We all tried to suggest new cool symbols, and of course suggested a lot of very stupid and irrelevant ones. It was a good time. :)
As for the haircuts, we tried a lot as you can see. It’s probably one of the most important and distinctive feature of a magical princess, so we had to make a lot of tests.
Once we had these drawings, we made a few proposals to our producers & broadcasters, with combinations of magical and casual, and trying Lyna or Carissa as “the Asian princess”, one after each other.
2 - First Proposal
For each of the proposal below, we tried different outfits each time. We knew that none of our proposal would be accepted entirely as they were anyway : you always end up with a patchwork of a little of each, that you have to put together somehow. Like it or not, it’s part of the process it seems.
As for the color palettes, well... “Pink”, “Orange”, “Blue”, “Red”, “Green”, “Black” were already taken. There wasn’t much left for the main colors that could fit : “Purple” and “Teal” were chosen for Carissa and Lyna. Yellow was rejected, as we tested it earlier with Auriana and... well, it really didn’t worked for the main gang. Maybe for an outsider princess ? But not for Lyna nor Carissa.
With Carissa as Asian, Lyna was Caucasian and we felt too close of Iris, and not young enough. With Lyna as Asian we could put Carissa as an Irish type, and this combination was much more appealing for us ! Everyone agreed, up to a point : we were asked at this time that Carissa should not be a redhead, as Auriana was supposed to be the group’s “redhead”, and another one was... “not needed”. Carissa’s hair color would go from red/orange to brown at this time.
Much work was yet to be done though... We had a basic direction approved, but we needed to explore it more thoroughly and it was time for more advanced color test too.
As for “Lyna-Caucasian” type, we kept the design and used it as a base for a character of season 2 : Debra, from episode S02E15 “The Ruby of the Orient”. ;)
3 - Color Researches
Choosing the exact outfit was a very complicated task, perhaps more for the casual outfit than the magical one. Below are a lot of our tests...
4 - Selected
In the end, here is the combination that was selected :
... But it wasn’t still over.
In fact, it never is until some production manager forcefully takes your model sheet, put the final approval seal, and flee with it before you can stop him/her. In our case, it didn’t happen, so, here we go for the final adjustments :
For the princess form, we were good and convinced they were what we needed. But for the casual outfits and colors ? Not so much.
5 - Final Adjustments
In this first model sheet, we tried different colors on both our characters to make sure the 5-Girl line up would work. We tried again color we previously rejected. We even tried to make Carissa black again. Well, it helped us confirm a few things, but we still weren’t there. For Lyna especially, we felt her top needed to be reworked : the knit, with or without sleeves, etc. (Note : we tried a lighter color for her eyes while we were at it). And of course there is always, all along the process, the question “how hard will it be to animate ?”. I confess this wasn’t a priority for a lot of people, but we tried to never forget it nevertheless.
Ok, at this stage, we had found the final shape for Lyna. We only needed to confirm our colors... We tried to put Carissa as the Irish redhead we originally wanted... and surprise ! This time it worked ! And everyone was convinced we had found her too !
And finaly, after a few months of work and back and forth, we could go clean and color the final model :
6 - Final Model
It’s fun to note that, even on the final color test we had, none of them was “the good one” : it was a bit of one, and a bit of another, in order to have the final model. As it always is. ;)
Ok folks, this was the last post of the season. :)
I need my beauty-summer-vacation-sleep ! I’ll have a lot to prepare for September if I want to continue feeding you with model-sheets, development, backgrounds and stories of course... and I’m crazy late regarding the animatics and I want to fix this.
Have a nice summer everyone, and see you back in September !

LoliRock Appreciation Week - Day 3 (Favorite Side Character)
I honestly love these boys. Heavy Metal is still a favorite of mine and I fell in love seeing Zack having his own problems that Iris couldn’t fix; his realistic personality was refreshing and I mean look at dat boy; he’s talented, cute, and relatable. I really enjoy working with him! Its amazing to see a young character believe in his artistic abilities, go through some ups and downs, and find the confidence to put his work out there. I think he’s amazing for that!
Matt is a treasure, okay. Unlike all the other boys we see with Auriana, aside from Carlos, its not just “Oh, cute boy!”, Matt is smart, sweet, and awkward. He has a lot of passion about his work and his emotions are genuine. He took Auriana seriously and was so open about his work and what he cared about, and because he loves it so much, it brought Auriana to see the stuff he showed her in a better light and it really helped the team. Despite his clumsiness and shyness, he gets the job done and doesn’t avoid his mistakes. BOY GETS STUFF DONE. I really would like to see more of him.
These sunshine boys are my babies! They both have personalities that could be great to work with! HC: they’re dr bros in college :D Zack is addicted to seasonal foods and Matt is thanking Auriana for his “totally cool, haha, get it zack???” “i get it...” scarf....
RUNNER-UPS: Carlos and Debra

Lolirock Appreciation Week, day 3: favorite secondary character - Tante Ellen!
Tante Ellen is the best and sorely underrated. Since episode 1 I knew she was more than what she seemed. It's s shame after her reveal ep she didn't show up more or teach Iris anything. She was in almost every episode in s2 so I can’t complain. The outfit she wore in Auri's daydream is my favorite.
Second is Izira and my favorite one-shots were Lily Bowman, Brenda and Debra!

These are every single person that the Lolirock girls got oracle gems from in Season 2. I put captions on every picture, so you should read those.
More than one and a half seasons in and we finally meet the person who runs the smoothie bar. Maybe next season we’ll actually learn the name of the smoothie bar.
So, um, this dude, this dude, decided to work at the smoothie bar, for only one day mind you, on the day of his brother’s wedding. Try to wrap your head around that one.
Wait, no, can we go back to Kyle please?
Jenny is Carissa’s adopted daughter. I don’t care if she has parents. Carissa is adopting her.
You know, for a show that has a predominately female cast, there hasn’t been a lot of lesbian subtext. Good thing this episode exists to pick up the slack.
Did Iris get the oracle gem because she said yes to Nathaniel or did she get the oracle gem because she followed her own heart and in doing so helped herself? Or is it both? Yeah, you didn’t think I’d get all analytical and philosophical on this post, did ya?
