Lolabee's 1 Year of Fic Celebration: 5th-7th April

I published my first fic in the fandom (Into the Fire - Joel Miller x reader) on April 6th 2023! This was probably the moment I fully committed to being part of the Pedro Pascal fandom and was a brave step for me in a) sharing writing after a long bout of writer’s block and anxiety and b) trying x reader for the first time and just writing for me again.

Since then, I’ve written a lot, made some wonderful friends and feel like I’m rebuilding my confidence again. It’s not been the easiest twelve months for me offline, there’s been some really stressful and difficult times, but this tumblr and writing has become a bit of an escape again and I love this community.

To mark this, I'd like to have a little celebration on my blog with all of you lovely people.

🎵 okay so song one I’m going for from my current rotation is Strong by London Grammar. I really like London Grammar and they feature in a few of my fic or writing playlists too. This one is very atmospheric for writing and the melodies and vocals are so pretty and crisp.

🍰 This fic came to mind and is one I read back in my lurking days but that I really love and has stayed with me and that is A Pilot for Christmas by @alwaysbethewest. I love the relationship in this and the chemistry and it’s such a fun fic.

This is a great question …

So I lurked in the fandom for about a month before setting up my tumblr and then about another month or so before I started to write anything. I had been thinking about writing something for Joel from the moment I started watching TLOU and it just grabbed me and sent me into that Pedro state of mind, I mean how could I not?

On a more serious note, I’d been suffering from a lot of writer’s block and anxiety and so writing again, even just having ideas, was huge for me.

My first fic was called Into the Fire which was a Joel fic and the idea behind it was that Joel wasn’t the only one who ends up ‘losing someone’ to the Fireflies so it’s about Joel and the reader connecting after their respective siblings leave the QZ with the fireflies. I liked the idea of this shared experience bringing them together and this similarity, but also the differences, between them.

There was a *lot* of backstory and subplots in my head that I didn’t feel confident enough to write at the time but ended up as Your Hand In Mine with a different setting (Jackson not the QZ, etc. but if you read between the lines and know the YHIM backstory you can see hints at elements of that) and I did end up extending the fic into a mini series with a few other standalone but linked oneshots.

🎵 the song I’ve chosen for this ask is One and Only by BLESSED which is just a great song as the weather starts to warm up here and also almost always ends up with me dancing around my house when I play it. I heard it on a TV show years ago (on my block, I think) and since then it frequently comes up on my playlist rotation, particularly as the weather warms up! It’s also now in my Let’s Get Lost playlist

Oooh, I didn’t know you used to be a radio dj - was it good fun? I really wanted to join the uni radio station when I was a student but I was a bit nervous.

🎵 Okay so this is also currently on a few playlists and I chose You’re Mine by Phantogram. I love Phantogram and they’re great for writing music and driving music too. Black Out Days is also on several of my Joel playlists because it just fits my TLOU aesthetic and headcanons so much and is a favourite of mine.

Yes, I definitely do make specific playlists for each fic. I have 2 playlists for general Joel vibes, 2 for general Frankie vibes and then each fic has a playlist too. There is a little bit of crossover with some songs which just fit multiple fics and characters but for me, it’s a fun part of the writing process to start a playlist for each fic and they can range from 15 to over 130 songs.

Music is a big part of my writing inspiration 😀

🎵 I Wanna Be Urs - Arctic Monkeys is on a few of my writing playlists at the moment. I like the slow beat and while some of the lyrics don't quite work for me if I'm 100% honest, I love the melody of the chorus. It's a great atmospheric track for writing certain scenes.

As for my favourite song, that's difficult. I am a Fleetwood Mac/ Stevie Nicks girlie and Landslide is a song that I come back to time and time again and really resonates with me.

Other than that, in terms of recent songs probably Sing Fever to the Form by Nick Mulvey. It has the guitar and vocal style I just love.

What was the inspiration behind Let's Get Lost? And what is your favourite line/piece of dialogue that you've written for it?

I love this question, El!

So ... the inspiration feels a lot easier to answer than my favourite line so I'll start there.

There were 3 main things that sort of came together to make Let's Get Lost:

*that* Pedro photoshoot on the beach that felt so Frankie to me

I'd been watching the Lincoln Lawyer, which I really liked, and the push-pull of Mickey and Maggie really interested me. They're exes and they have good reasons not to be together but at the same time, they should be and there's this chemistry. I liked the idea from that of writing something along the lines of 'it's always been you' and a second chance romance for Frankie.

I was listening to Lana Del Rey's Summertime Sadness and that bit about 'i think i'll miss you forever' and it all sort of came together to Let's Get Lost and a couple of scenes within that.

In terms of a favourite line or piece of dialogue, this was so hard but I really like the conversation between Frankie and the reader about flying and getting his licence back in chapter three:

“Yes. For what it’s worth, I’d feel safe in any aircraft if you were flying it.  ” He swallows, looking away from you for just a moment. “You mean that?” “Of course.” He nods. Your hand has slipped into his and he squeezes. It feels so familiar, so right at this moment. “If you don’t want to fly,” you add, “that’s okay too.”
