The Marines gathered outside for a screening of some film they didn't even know the name of and none of the soldiers could care less. Some men from H Company were on 'leave' there too anxious to relax a bit and stop thinking about the war.
Just like every soldier in the room.
•••
Sidney Phillips was sitting next to Eugene Sledge, both of them drawn to the film. Only 20 minutes passed when a familiar person appeared on the screen. Sid wasn't sure if he's dreaming or if it's really her. She definitely changed a lot, Sid didn't remember she used to be that beautiful.
Some of the soldiers let out a satisfactory moan when they saw her and even some dirty shouts could be heard. Phillips didn't know if it's jealousy or not, but it was slightly uncomfortable for him to hear such comments about the woman.
"Holy crap," Eugene breathed out, "is it really her?"
"I think so." Sid smiled, his eyes not leaving the movie screen for a second.
"I remember she used to have a huge crush on you before the war." the red-head chuckled and nugged his friend's side, "you should have seen her when you enlisted and left. She was so damn worried but couldn't say a word."
"I swear to God, Gene, if you're making fun of me..."
"Am not! I mean it. I've always shipped you guys but you seemed not so interested." Sledge laughed winking at him.
"Shut up!" Sid smirked and pushed him off of the table.
•••
It was a sunny morning and Sid was standing on a ship heading back to the States - wind tangled in his hear, sunlight dancing on his skin and his heart weighted by the never-ending agony. But there was a smile on his face.
Sidney Phillips was coming home. Home. After such a long time! He wasn't sure if he should rejoice or grieve because he's leaving his friends behind even though Sid wasn't afraid about them. He was sure they're gonna make it. He just knew.
However, his mind was occupied mostly by his childhood friend, Y/N, that he saw on Pavuvu screening. He wasn't able to process it. Of course, Sid remembered very well how she used to go on about being an actress for hours. But their relationship was interrupted by the world's biggest conflict and Sid left for war. He didn't write her letters and neither did she. They weren't aware of each other, did not know what happened to the other one.
Until Sid saw her playing in a famous movie in the middle of the Pacific. Y/N made it, she fulfilled her dream and now, he was coming back to a completely a different woman.
•••
Y/N was nervously stepping next to her car on the train station in Mobile. Her plain dress was flowing in the summer breeze and she shivered a little - not because of the cold but because of what the next train might bring with itself.
When the transport stopped right in front of her, she froze in the middle of the movement. Y/N, focusing on the front door, bit her lip.
Please God, let him be okay.
Sidney Phillips got off the train looking fine more than ever, his eyes landing on immediately on Y/N.
"Holy shit," the soldier whispered and with a few large steps he embraced her in his arms.
"You don't even know how happy I'm to see you." she mumbled into his neck and pressed herself even closer to him. Y/N could hear his fast hearbeat and she'd swear that he could hear hers too.
"Believe me I know. I missed you." Sid replied pulling away after a long time of holding the other one and processing the fact that they are back together. Only Eugene was missing from their group.
"Me too, Mr Phillips. I prepared some food for you, you must be hungry from the long journey." she grinned as she gestured towards her own vehicle.
"That is your car?" Sidney exclained staring at the beautiful red cabriolet that must have cost a fortune.
Y/N just laughed and the blond soldier thought that this was the most beautiful thing he'd heard in his whole life.
•••
"This is so damn good, Y/N." Sid mumbled with a full mouth of the italian lasagne she prepared for him. Y/N blushed slightly at his compliment and winked at him, "It's the least I can do for my soldier."
"So I'm yours, hey?"
"Don't get any ideas, Phillips."
"Dating an actress? I'd like that."
"Shut up," she laughed throwing a handkerchief at him.
"Really, Y/N? Really?" he smirked picking up the piece of cloth, "you haven't changed a bit."
But you did. I can see it in your eyes.
They finished their food in silence catching the other one staring every other minute. Sidney threw her a flashing smile every single time so by the end of the lunch Y/N was a blushing mess.
"There's something I've been meaning to tell you. Well, ask you actually." Sid suddenly calmed and look at her deeply with a little innocent smile on his face.
"God, you're so beautiful." he breathed out as he took her by her hand. "Do you think that you would do me the honour of taking you out for a dinner?"
"A date with a soldier? I'd like that." she mimicked him blushing at his offer.
"Damn Y/N, you just have to ruin the moment every time." Sid laughed as he shook head at the woman in front of him that he fell in love such a long time ago but realised only a few days ago.
"You better shut up and kiss me, Phillips."
"Yes, ma'am."
