been in an early romantic era lately and now i’m just thinking about how phoenix loves playing chopin early on in his career because of the simplicity of the absolutely poetic and beautiful expression in chopin’s music, with a few improvisational elements (all those little embellishments and rubato that were popular for that time). he’s great at improvising. he wears his heart on his sleeves. he’s simply that.

and miles is taught by manfred to worship the great german composers and their musical ethos: one of structure and control, of bach, beethoven, and wagner. the latter means lizst (despite being hungarian but because he was in the same musical school of thought as wagner) is also dragged to that pedestal. the need to show off every advanced technique perfectly. to impress. to get recognition from your mentor.
