so uhhh... should I watch the LOGH remake or the seventy-billion-episode original? What's your opinion on them? Is one better than the other?

Hey there! I’m no authority on this, but my personal opinion from having watched both to completion is that the original 110 episode OVA is better :D

Here are some reasons:

1) The Character Designs - the OVA has beautiful and distinguishable character designs, on top of voice acting, that will always remain classic to me. As a fan artist, I vastly prefer the looks of the cast in the OVA over the versions of everyone in DNT. For example, Walter von Schonkopf’s face in DNT looks more plain and generic than his OVA counterpart:

2) The Music - DNT has fine modern orchestral arrangements, but the OVA actually inserts lots of classical music throughout the show, adding to the grandeur of the experience! For example, there’s a particularly memorable part where a small fleet of fighter jet spaceships launch out into space to do battle with Spanish Dance from Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky blasting in the background that I’ll never forget 😆

3) The Story Itself - As the original source material is actually a series of novels, the story is adapted slightly differently between the OVA and DNT! DNT is arguably more accurate to the books in its order of events and pacing, while the OVA takes more creative liberties by adding more depth to certain background characters that are brushed over in the original material, while also slowing the pacing down a bit. I have talked to someone else who also has watched both and they said that they could Feel the passion and love that the OVA creators felt for each character more that way! For example, Admiral the Cat is totally an OVA invention and is so fun to watch! Yang Wen Li, my favorite character, seems less infallible and more endearingly dorky and tired of being pushed around in the OVA compared to his more perfect DNT counterpart. There are also so many more humorous verbal quips littered throughout the OVA that are very memorable. 😀

Ultimately I think it’s up to you! Keep in mind that the OVA is already fully complete while DNT has only covered like 30-40%(?) of the story at this time. Even if you were to start DNT, you would most likely have to hop over to the novels or OVA anyway later.

In all fairness, I’ll also give some more positive points on DNT:

1) Being Modern - it’s modern, so the animation quality is probably easier to get used to as it’s done by Production IG starting in 2018

2) The Battles and Ship Designs are Flashier - there is usage of CGI models for the space battles but honestly they do a pretty good job blending everything in with flashier effects not present in the OVA

Unpopular opinion: OVA Yang's design was a bit tat old compared to the depiction of him in the novel and Michihara and DNT version was more accurate

After having a conversation with my brother whom working in national defense field (and a Yang fan as well), now I realized why people didn't notice the detail.

Because we see Yang as a soldier, not an average person. So, our mind trick us that "a soldier must look weary, old and stressful"

When Tanaka first describe Yang, Yang has already 28-29 but still, he still being said looks younger than his age. If we compare 27->28, eh not too much different, so we just have 24-26 left. Even after he passed his 30th birthday, Julian (sorta) said that Yang still looks like a man who passed mid 20. I think thats why the redraw of OVA made Yang younger. OVA actually did him like a true 30 yrs old man, sometime he even looks older than that (almost like 35 or 40) .

This is the redraw: thinking he's ten (literally my brother)? No, he's 15! When I was ten, i look like 15, wth Yang?

"Since when did the alliance let children join the army?" - Mein Bruder with this image and FujiRyu version (but I think this one is too much)

Bringing Schonkopf in is not fair. When you hit 30s, things got different quickly. And genes as well. Asian usually looks younger than European, and their bone structure and flesh have a huge different.

Michihara's wasn't too young, it was her style

DNT: again, it was their style. He don't actually look that young, and he canonically looks younger than his age.

However, if compared OVA Yang in OVA original style (not the redraw), he does look young...er than people older than him.

Still, I like it. I does like it so much that OVA Yang was the majority of my Yang's album to the point that I hardly found other version in it. There are "some" pic that I like:

But, I also disagree when there's some arts of Yang which drew him too slender and too small, almost to the point like Twiggy

Politics? Yaoi? Space!

I've been eyeing Legend of the Galactic Heroes (or LOGH for short) for a few years now. Its art style is comfortable to look at and the (probable) main character's flowing beautiful locks have whispered to me at night.

All I know of this series is what can be found in this video (very funny) and this one (peak context free amv). So I am open for yaoi undertones in the middle of this Space Empire (?)

Since my brain is currently suffering from acute Umineko rejection, I felt like I should give this one a go.

I'll start with the "My Conquest Is The Sea of Stars" movie and see where it goes

I sure love Reluctant Heroes. Because I like LOGH Yang Wenli and Are You OK's Lou Zhu? I love characters that can get scared/waver but when it comes to serious situation, they will no doubt help other people. Both are lower class strategist in their side that show no interest in their position and a pacifist. At least Lou Zhu didn't died early so he still manage to watch over Zuo Yunqi becoming his successor in entrepreneurship unlike Julian's soldier legacy after Yang Wenli's death. Also, age gap romance lol For Lou Zhu, Zuo Yunqi is also Yang Wenli's Frederica.

Then both of them have revengeful lesser nobility characters that serve as their foils in the story. LOGH Reinhard von Lohengramm has a sister who became an emperor's consort even if they don't want to let her go. He then enter the military to try rescue his sister and seek vengeance toward the emperor who took his sister. In Are You OK's Prince Zhou Rongqi, he was less ambitious and only want revenge. He don't really have ideals to change the class system or government but he has kind of similar problem though. Both of their target for vengeance are the emperor, the one in power. His mother, and brother died as victims because of his brother who eventually became the emperor. His friend who's supposed to be a noble was reduced to brothel's musician, he was too late saving him as well. Liu Wenzhong/Li Ke's role for Zhou Rongqi is like Kircheis for Reinhard, their light in their path toward hatred. Zhou Rongqi is the one who died though, not his Kircheis. Well, technically Liu Wenzhong died but another soul Li Ke took over the body.

PS I love old LOGH too. They have better designs. I don't entirely hate the remake just yet, I'm still waiting if they make Reinhard grow his hair. If they don't, that's where I draw the line. I'm not joking. His long hair matters.
